Eron sighed a bit as he thought about it. He had read about it as a child, back when he did study magic, but he never thought he would be put into this situation.
"The only way the days can be longer is if we're not in our own world anymore," Eron explained, "A magi, preferably someone who studies dimensional planes could help us get home."
Of course he didn't mention there was a chance there were no magi in this world. He wasn't sure what they would do if that was the case. Probably start thinking of making this place home and the thought made his stomach sink.

Shoneah blinked at Eron, sleep inhibiting her comprehension. It took several seconds for what he had said to sink in, and even then she wasn't certain she understood what he meant.
"I'm - I'm sorry," she frowned, rubbing her cheek slowly as she looked at him. "I ... I don't think I understand. What do you mean, not in our own world anymore?"
The fear that she'd felt the day before, the fear that she'd thought she'd overcome, was returning; and though she fought to subdue it, it was washing over her like the tide.

Eron grimaced as he tried to draw from what little he remembered on the topic. It wasn't like they went deeply into it at school, it was like meta physics in science, you knew it existed, but you didn't know much more than that due to the lack of experience.
"The fact the days here are longer are a sign that we're not in our own world anymore," Eron explained, "Worlds all run differently, they can have different rules than our own, or even different flows of time."
He wished he remembered how he ended up here, but all he remembered was falling, but that wasn't too unusual if you were going to fall into another world.
"I mean, it's rare that you could end up in another world, but not unheard of," he told her, "It just doesn't normally happen."

Shoneah nodded slowly, her face pale.
"And what are the chances that we will be able to return home?" she asked quietly. "How long might it take?"
Her heart was racing, and she felt sick. Her family would be worried about her. Her whole tribe would be worried about her! She had to get back to them!

Eron looked at her seriously, "It depends on whether or not magi are common in this world and if there is one that even studies this sort of magic."
He hated to admit it, but he better seriously think about emptying out the rest of his suitcase because the chances of him ever needing his papers or textbooks again wasn't really that high.
"I can't really say until I know more about this world."
Because he didn't want to frighten her with the idea that they might not get home at all. She was already looking frightfully pale to him. Maybe it was just the nature of being stuck in a city where stories of the unthinkable weren't uncommon, perhaps not an every day thing but not uncommon.
That or it hadn't fully sunk in yet.
He was guessing the latter for himself.

Shoneah closed her eyes and sank to the ground. This changed everything.
No longer in their own world ...
Shoneah was capable of taking a lot before she got upset, but this was beyond anything she had faced before. While she had believed that they were at least in their own world, she had hope of seeing her family again - but now even that was gone, and the last positive thought she'd been holding onto was evaporating.
She felt tears gathering in her eyes, and she couldn't fight them. She put her head in her hands and began to cry.

Seeing as Eron thought that Shoneah was much older than her years, he was surprised she was suddenly crying. He expected anger before fear, and she looked to him like some of the teen girls that he would teach.
Tentatively he put an arm around her shoulder.
"There now, we still have a chance yet," he told her softly.

But Shoneah was beyond logic.
"But my parents," she sobbed. "I - I might not see my parents again! They'll be so worried about me! And my - my little brother, he needs me!"
Having just a chance was not reassuring by any stretch of the imagination. She had never been away from her family before, not without them knowing about it; to this point she'd been able to stay strong because she'd had hope of returning to them at least relatively soon. But now?
For the first time, she felt as young as her age, and when Eron put his arm around her shoulder, she turned instinctively towards him and buried her face in his chest.

Now this was awkward, though Eron was slowly realizing he made a rookie teaching error.
Judging someone's age by their looks, something any good Gaian teacher in a diverse population would know not to do.
Now he had a crying (teenager?) on his hands and he wasn't sure what to do beyond rub her back. Something he wasn't comfortable with because girls rarely cried to the chemistry teacher. This was often a job for the school counselor or whoever the most popular female teacher happened to be at the time.

It didn't take Shoneah long to cry herself out. She had never been a crier, and only the desperation of the situation had turned her into one for the moment. Her tears stopped, her sobs ceased, and finally she calmed down, at least enough to sit up on her own again.
"I'm sorry," she sniffled, diverting her eyes in shame. "I just ... I've never been away from my parents before. Never for more than a night, and ... the thought of not getting back to them ..."
She took a deep, shuddering breath and tried to calm herself again. "I've never been afraid before, not of anything, but this ... the thought that I might not see them again ..."
She closed her eyes tightly to hold back fresh tears, and a whimper escaped her throat. "I'm terrified," she squeaked finally.

"There's nothing to be sorry about and it's perfectly fine to be terrified," Eron assured her, "I will admit this all gives me a sinking feeling I don't like and I've been befuddled since the moment we've met."
Since he was truly the fish out of water, so it was strange being the voice of reason now. There was a sense of panic but it was being tempered by the fact he had to think about what little he remembered from his childhood. He suspected, like the way Shoneah knew all about survival and he didn't, he had the most knowledge about magic of the two of them.
This was a frightening thought since he was barely a novice in the field.

Shoneah sniffled again and rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. "No, there is something to be sorry about," she murmured, pushing herself back to her feet. "I am sorry about the way I acted yesterday. Last night. As if I were in charge and giving you orders. Treating you as though you knew nothing. I treated you badly, and for that I am very sorry."
Her eyes were red and swollen as she looked at him. "I suppose we are both in the same situation. We are both out of our element, in one way or another. As you are ignorant in the ways of the wilderness, so I am ignorant in the ways of magic."

Eron was touched and realized part of the reason why he misjudged her age was because she acted more mature than most of the students he had.
"And I accept, knowing you were a great help, and you did help me and stay with me," Eron told her gently, "I know I frustrated you quite a bit yesterday."

Shoneah chewed her lower lip and tried to hide the blush that rose in her cheeks.
"It is not your fault," she murmured. "I ... in my mind, I know that city dwellers are not learned in the ways of survival, but I have known nothing else my entire life. My people are shunned by society, and to tell the truth we do not mind it. Our only desire is to live off the land and be left alone."
She moved as if to run her fingers through her hair, but when she saw the blood on them, she stopped and frowned.
"We need to figure out what we are going to do from here," she murmured. "Food does not seem to be a problem, at least not yet; but we will soon need water. The blood we have been drinking will not keep us for long."
There were so many things they would need that she almost didn't want to think about it yet. One thing at a time. But they also needed to discuss their long-term plans, and that was something they would need to discuss soon.

Eron looked thoughtfully to the trees, "The trees would be our best, the more greenery the better..."
Since it would more likely to suggest water. It was the only thing they had going on at the moment.
