▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Giving a wry smile at her statement, he gave a small shrug. A little white lie here and there wasn't a big deal, in his opinion, especially when it had been in the best interest of the poor man. It would have been quite a shock for a regular human, convinced that magic was just a myth, to find that his roommate was a shapeshifting fairy that may or may not steal souls would be quite a shock. She was right about not being shy, that was one thing he was not, and he supposed he was kind of a stray... ah, not the conversation for now. Coming back to the conversation with a small shake of his head, he smiled again. A terrific cook? That sounded lovely.
"A vegetarian? I had a number of vegetarian friends back in the city that were decent cooks." he had had a vegetarian roommate for about a month after college, for which time he had gone on the diet temporarily. "I eat mostly lamb and chicken these days. My current roommate is from the Middle East, and those are the meats they use most often. I haven't had pork in years, though." while his roommate was not a devout Muslim anymore, it was still a taboo that he didn't want to cross; Nicolo had once been told exactly where the other hailed from, but he couldn't quite remember. Chasing a piece of fish around his plate, he nearly dropped his fork as he remembered something. "Ah! I nearly forgot." he looked almost sheepish for a moment, before his expression returned to one of mild amusement. "Afzal, my roommate, is a marid. He tried explaining to me the difference between marids and genies, but all I got was that they were bigger and kind of pompous."

〠☾ Listening as Nicolo mentioned his recent habits in meals, she did her best to memorize this information for possible use in the future. It wouldn't do to serve him something he disliked, if the occasion ever arose. The mention of the Middle East caused her to perk up slightly, since her ancestors responsible for her magic had hailed from the same general area. His exclamation brought her gaze up, and she rose a brow as he added more information regarding his roommate. Never one to believe in coincidences, she told him, "You're completely correct. Although I admit to being biased on the matter." she laughed lightly, taking a bite from her lasagna as she considered her knowledge of the differences between her race and marids. "I suppose they're called 'Masters' for a reason, but I haven't figured it out." she teased lightly, her fork returning to her plate as she finished off her meal.

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Finishing off the last bits of pasta on his plate, he flashed a small smile once his mouth was clear of food. Afzal was definitely a proud individual, but he had been getting better about being rude. It had been a bit of a fight, but slowly the other man was easing into humility; at least, as much so as possible for someone who had been raised being constantly told that they were a superior race. At the very least, the marid was aware of it. "He told me that back in the day they were these all powerful beings. Now he says they mostly just sit around and talk about the old days. At least in his family." he admitted, looking amused. There had been many tales of his roommate's young life, and they had traded familial horror stories. "It's the same in my family really. Once we were a great and powerful race!" he started, voice gaining a hint of power and strength. "But now my family lives in seclusion, and three of my cousins works at a Dairy Queen." he shook his head in bemusement, setting down his fork as he did so.

〠☾ Amused by his story, and even more by the impression of his family, Katrina sat back in her seat to listen. "I do love Dairy Queen." she admitted when he finished, their ice creams had been an important part of her childhood. "But it's got to be nice to know where you've come from. My family hasn't got any solid evidence of our magical heritage." she considered what they did know for a moment, which was merely the fact that her mother's side were arabian. Her thoughts were interrupted by another of their waiter's perfectly timed arrivals, where he dropped off the check and ensured that their meal had been enjoyable. Katrina thanked him politely before turning her attention back to Nicolo. "I'll make you a deal." she started, her hand reaching for the black book that held the check. "There's a ball coming up. One of those really fancy things the town hosts every year." she smiled, assuming that he was getting the gist of her suggestion. Their date had gone well so far, between the movie, dinner, and conversation; well enough that she would enjoy seeing him again, and this way she would be knocking out two birds with one stone. "I pay, and introduce you to my wonderful cooking friend, if you wouldn't mind accompanying me to the ball?"

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Agreeing on the matter of Dairy Queen, ice cream was one of his favourite treats, he leaned back against the seat of the booth. He shrugged at the comment about family; sure it was nice to know, but cat siths were a Celtic legend, so there wasn't much left to the imagination. Still, he could see her point, as knowing was almost always better than not knowing. Glancing up at the arrival of the waiter, he also reached for the black book and frowned as she did. His eyebrows raised at the proposal of a deal, and he smiled faintly as the details were disclosed. "Or," he started, fingering the edge of the leather bound book, "I pay, and receive the honor of your company at this ball, as well as the honor of meeting this friend." he proposed, swinging the details of the deal around. Family had taught him to pay for the bill, but if that was her argument, it was hardly a fair trade off; he liked the wording of his own much better.

〠☾ As a mind reader, Katrina was rarely impressed by someone's ability to twist a situation to suit their own thoughts, but Nicolo had definitely managed to beat her at her own goal. As sly smile crossed her face, as she had no good comeback for his eloquent words. "I'll need to be careful when you start talking," she said, releasing the check book. "Your poor college roommate never stood a chance, I see." She laughed, appreciating his talent in speaking. Granted, she should have expected such, since he did work for a law firm. Most of the town's restaurants required that one pay up front, to prevent anyone from insisting they had already paid at the table and walking away with a free meal. Of course, in Janhall, it would be hard to get away with such a feat, unless one wanted to avoid one place for the rest of their life. After explaining to Nicolo that they would need to take the check to the front counter, she took a last sip of her water before standing.

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Chuckling at her comments, he plucked the checkbook from the table when it was clear that he had won. Taking a last drink of his water, he stood with her to move towards the front of the restaurant. "No, I'm afraid he didn't." he admitted, hand reaching into his back pocket for his wallet as they approached the front counter. He paid, waving a hand to indicate that they should move away from the counter so as not to be in the way of any other customers. Smooth talking was a gift of his, one that he had honed from a young age; at first it was just to get candy when they went grocery shopping, but it had come in handy when he was in the human world and arranging for paperwork to get into college.
Exiting the restaurant, he stood to the side of the door and under the cabana hanging from the front of the building. The night air had only the faintest chill, and one hand dropped to his pocket in his usual stance. He turned, eyes falling on his companion; it had grown dark quickly, the streetlights doing their best to lighten the way, but his eyes flashed green in the light and his pupils looked almost like slits. "Anywhere else to go tonight?" he inquired, one eyebrow raised in question.

〠☾ Having spent a few moments lingering in the front of the place, she stared idly at different paintings until noticing Nicolo motioning for her from the corner of her eye. Leaving the restaurant at his side, Katrina was pleased to find that the wind had died down, with only a slight coolness in the air. Considering that she hadn't worn a cardigan, that was actually a stroke of good luck, as he scarf would do well enough. Turning to face her date, she smiled faintly, studying his eyes for a moment as she considered his question. They looked so cat-like in the dim light, and she was aware of how much more green they appeared, rather than grey. "Only one place that I can think of." she told him, a sly smile on her face as she spoke softly, giving her an excuse to lean closer. "I hope you've enjoyed tonight as much as I have." she added, trying to gauge his current emotions without being intrusive, although she was definitely delaying her walk to her car.

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Letting the door slip closed behind them, he cracked a smile at her comment. Well, that was something he hadn't quite expected. He slipped only a bit closer, blocking her from the light wind as she wore only a t-shirt. "I hope that means I've earned a pass for that ball?" he was looking forward to seeing her again, even if he wasn't a huge fan of fancy parties. "Shall I walk you to your car?" he extended a hand, hoping she would take it and allow him a few more minutes of her company. The walk back wouldn't be a long one, but it was something.

〠☾ Smiling as he brought up the ball, she raised an eyebrow as she told him, "I let you pay, didn't I?" she flashed a cheeky grin, knowing that even if she had paid, the deal would have been the same. "I'd appreciate it." she said in response to his second question, taking the offered hand and a step forward with him. Remaining at his side, she retraced their steps, crossing the street first before angling back down the block they had come up to get to Linguini's. As they walked, she used the short amount of time wisely, her tone light as she asked, "How well do you dance?" It was a question she hadn't considered asking before, but with his agreement on going to the ball, she was hopeful that would be able to spend time dancing, should the night grow as boring as previous years.

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Moving with her across the street and up the sidewalk, he gave a pleased smile at her question. She was right, and he was quite satisfied with the way things had gone. Dating had always been an interesting endeavor, to say the least, but it was far easier with someone who knew the truth about him as averse to the blind dates with humans his college friends insisted on setting up. At her question, he removed his hand from his pocket and held it out a bit. "I can waltz, tango, and I do a mean macarena." he smiled proudly, his array of dancing wide. There had been a number of clubs in the city he had been dragged to, so he knew that sort of dancing as well, if you would really call it dancing.

〠☾ Despite the fact that Katrina rarely dated, she felt that the night had gone far more smoothly than she had anticipated. Perhaps Mike would receive a thank you from her, even if he did eat all her food and cause a general ruckus each time she bumped into the man. There were definitely interesting qualities to Nicolo, and she looked forward to learning more about them over time. Arriving at the cinema's designated parking, she eyed her car's familiar silver color. it hadn't been too difficult to spot since only a handful of cars were in the lot, and she had placed her's in the corner. His admitted knowledge of dancing brought her attention back to him, and lowered her gaze to his other offered hand. Taking it, she faced him as she said, "Although I do love the Macarena, the Waltz is my favorite." Smiling, she trailed her left fingertips up his arm before letting her palm rest on his shoulder, her back straight as she tested his form. It had always been her opinion that she could judge a good dancer by the way they stood before they moved. "How did you learn such a variety of dances?" she asked, curious if he had at least picked up the Macarena in the human world; she had rarely seen it behind the Veil, and when she did, it was usually performed by humans.

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Coming to a stop next to a silver car, he shifted to get a better look at her; his eyes glinted like a cat's, suggesting an increase in his night vision. Feeling her hand move up his arm, he flashed another smile at her comments about dancing. "The waltz and the tango I learned at home. My parents are very... traditional." he admitted, having learned the dances while he was still at home. "The macarena is a more interesting story." he paused, looking for any interest in the tale before he continued. "Freshman year, my roommate blackmailed me into taking his little sister to a prom," at least that's what he thought it was called, "and I learned it there. It was an interesting experience, to say the least." he chuckled, calling up the memories; to keep his 'cat' a secret, he'd been shoved into a tux and whisked off by his roommate's teenage sister, and he'd been getting constant texts from her for weeks afterwards. Eventually, he caved and changed his phone number.

〠☾ Catching the glint of light in his eyes for the second time, she wondered for a moment what caused it. After a few moments of thinking, she realized that it had to be the light, or lack of it. Both times his eyes had become more feline looking, it had been because they had stepped into dimmer spots, which made sense, considering his race. The adaptation had to be quite useful, since her own eyesight was still adjusting to the dark. Listening as he admitted to learning the dances while he was still with his family, she understood what was meant by the pause given before he had found the right word. From what little she had heard of Nicolo's family, she thought that 'traditional' was suitable enough, although remembering his earlier impression of the family returned her smile. As he mentioned the Macarena, she rose a brow, wondering how that knowledge had come along. He continued with an explanation, and she had to resist a laugh as she said, "I'm sure your talent at the Macarena made the girl swoon." Her tone was light and teasing, although she really had no doubt that he could perform the dance well.

▂▃▅▆█Smarty Pants█▆▅▃▂ Flashing another grin at her words, he gave a small shrug. The humans had said he was a quick learner. but he wasn't oneto brag, especially not about something so unimportant. The teasing was light, and he appreciated the sentiment. "Making girls swoon is my specialty." his tone was one of admittance, as if it were a great burden. Of course, impressing women was not always easy, but he thought he did a decent job. The date had gone well, in his opinion, and clearly she agreed as he had been invited along on a second date. "Would you mind giving me the details of the ball? It doesn't have to be right this moment, but I'd like to be prepared." he wanted to know the formality of the dress code especially, as he would need to see about getting his hands on a tux if suits weren't quite formal enough. Maybe Afzal would have one? He wouldn't put it past his high class roommate.
