"While I do like red, green wins that contest. I like blue too. Red and green together though...," oh hello salmon. Rin was thinking about you for quite some time now. Rin used her now free hand to gently take the fork and consider with the fork if the pieces were small enough not to require cutting up which was an entirely different ordeal and generally devolved into feeling weak and humiliated. Thankfully, as it turned out, fancy appetizers were built like finger food. She took one in her fork and daintily consumed it. Chewing and swallowing. "I wish there was way more of that on my plate," she remarked at the taste before setting the fork down to carefully caress her champagne flute. "Favourite food?" She stole a sip of the contents.

His salmon was delicately perched on it's greens and he looked at it, how much attention when into such a small thing, and how the sauce made little spirals around the white plate. It was a lot of attention for something he wanted to just pop in his mouth in one bite. Keeping himself from doing that was hard, and he made an effort to at least eat it slowly, but was done with it in minutes. "That was good, but yeah. I wish there was more. I can only hope that the main course it actually a decent size. Then again, that was called a starter." He looked at his empty plate with a bit of a frown, already missing his little sample of heaven. "Can't say I don't miss hometown restaurants that give you big appetizer dishes you can share with a group." Something like breaded green beans or onion blossoms.
Taking his own flute to sip, he considered the options. "Well, I generally like spicy foods as you know. Overall, I like chili. A lot of people did fish dishes since we lived near the ocean and a lot of lakes. Since it was usually cold, it was hearty food a lot of the time. During the summer, this one down would do a sort of hot foods competition, and chili was a big part of it. I loved it. The ribs weren't half bad either." Yes, very tidy and clean Melvin liked ribs.
He was getting even hungrier now.
He looked at Rin. "How about you?"

Rin chuckled, "Man after my own heart." She too liked... well. More. "My favourite food though is unquestionably chocolate. I will never quit it. Ever." She did however find herself struggling to envision Melvin eating ribs. "I'll make you ribs one day." And keenly watch you eat them.

He smiled once again at her strong love of chocolate. He knew who he'd be offering his dessert to at the end of the meal, that was for sure.
"I don't know if I ever saw you cook before." Even at the Thanksgiving party, Rin had been helping him with other things while Opfelia and others manned the kitchens. For once, he was smart enough not to ask if she even knew how to cook.

"I don't really enjoy it. It's a chore like washing dishes or doing laundry." She tried to look around expectantly for more food without looking like she was looking around for more food. "I mostly make sandwiches though because it's generally faster, easier, and doesn't leave as big a mess." She was pretty sure he knew that though.

"Same. Everyone else cooked when I grew up. Sorta just bachelor-ed it up when in college." There was a dining hall and restaurants to go to that didn't require him to cook or do dishes. He still looked forward to promised ribs.
With the talk of food, their dishes were removed and main course were set on the table. Melvin looked down at a braised duck leg set upon a little stylish puree mound. He picked up his fork.
"If you weren't in Deus anymore, just were able to leave, what would you do?" He asked, just curious. They couldn't talk much about a future when their work so was uncertain, but hypotheticals were nice to talk about.

"I think I'd take my savings and go to college," Rin answered as she tried to cut up her filet mignon. "Get a great job I love... maybe build a replacement arm? Who knows. Maybe veg out for a bit just because I can. You?"

"I...don't really know. I would think I'd go back to my family, but considering I've been dead and gone, going back would probably only hurt them. They'd want to know why I pulled off such a stunt, and I'm pretty sure you go to jail if you fake your own death." He still liked to entertain it. "I would maybe write letters though. Pretend I had to leave the country for some reason."
His family was always at the back of his mind. "I always like science, but going backs to school and taking normal classes again seems strange now after what I've seen and worked on. I guess I'd just want a normal job and get a nice place and enjoy just being around lots of people again and being able to go to the store whenever I wanted. Probably would still go to the shooting range somewhere. I kinda like it." He admitted hesitantly as he felt aggression of any sort felt odd. It was like wearing a shirt everyone else could pull off and looked strange on him.
"And getting lots of dogs." He added, smiling.

Rin laughed softly before adding, "I want birds." But she felt that much was a given. That and a garden, a bigger garden. Big, expensive, mostly automated too so she can just relax and watch the life grow around her. She could probably have that anyway on Deus. With time, money, and a lot of importing.

He considered it. "Do you mean if we ever got to leave? I guess they would take our weapons, wouldn't they?" It was all hypothetical after all, and he considered what it would be like to not have a voice in his head anymore. "Don't know how I'd feel to had my head to myself anymore. Over a year having someone talk to you kinda starts feeling normal as crazy as that is."
He never really thought of Rin's weapon too much. "Never got to hear much about your weapon."
Cutting a piece of his duck, he ate it and savored the mastery in cooking. "I wish we could just take a few undead and tie them out on the training fields. Would feel better. Been meaning to do more training. Maybe go back to the artic to help clear more Yetis. Sometimes the labs get too much and...well..." He started to cut another piece of duck as to not look up. "...I kinda like it."

"I mean back ho-on the island. We can at the very least look for paper targets for you before we leave?" He brought up Byr and Rin fell silent. She finally got a piece of her filet severed and replaced her knife with a fork and consumed it. Something so simple - a flavourful explosion in her mouth as the meat basically melted away. She hummed at the pleasure of it.
Subject change. "....You kind of like what?"

He took a sip of champagne, already on his second glass. It was a good think he at least drank some on the island or else his tolerance would be non-existent. For now, he just felt a nice warm feeling from the drink.
"Hmm....Well. Ya know. Shooting things." He went to cut another piece before looking over at her plate, wondering if she wanted help. Then again, she was a big girl. It might be insulting.
Stabbing his fork, he debated a moment. He had problems with sharing food, but that didn't mean he couldn't give her a piece. She had no problems with his spit. You're not sick. You're fine. She won't catch anything. It's okay.
Taking another big breath as if he was about to jump head first in a frozen lake, he held up his fork. "Do you...want some?"

Rin stared at the offered food and then Melvin. Whatever he was on it was seriously good sh... "Okay," she answered. She opened her mouth slightly, unsure if he was planning to go as far as actually feeding it to her.

It was romantic. That was what he kept telling himself as he looked at the piece of duck on his used fork that he was offering to Rin. Despite medication, he still felt his stomach twist in knots and feeling more flushed and even a little light-headed than just a couple glasses of champange could excuse. His heart was racing, his brain was pleading, and his hands were hot and slightly shaking as if his body was trying to go against orders and pull back.
He tried not to imagine the duck on the tip of his fork turning green, then black, and then molding. He tried not to imagine Rin getting sick in a hour, sweating with a fever in bed.
He just focused on lifting the fork and holding it out within easy reach for her to bite it.

He held it out and with that a soft click could be heard of teeth against metal and the piece of duck had vanished. Rin chewed thoughtfully with a curious hum before she nodded with approval. "That's exquisite. I'd offer you some of mine in return but well... it's tricky to work around." When you have one arm and a risk of him rejecting the offer after finally getting a piece cut.
