The hand simply began to crumble, and then the clouds parted -

- to reveal the body, made entirely of a giant red fragment. There wasn't actually a moon in the sky, its body was what consisted of that red moon.

Slowly, the red mass, the pulsating, glittering red mass lowered itself, a giant organic meteor that seemed to crush and push back everything it even came within range of, trees, grass, even the children scattering.

The body approached closer, closer, until it was in contact, until each facet of red seemed to reflect Gale and Otto's reflections into infinity, until it seemed ready to crush the two by pure force -

- And it was pretty obvious what they needed to do.

Otto was slightly intimidated. More than slightly. It almost felt like the end as he knew it was upon him. All he knew right now was he had a frisbee and a prayer. He wanted to live.

However, his fear made him shake, nearly dropping the frisbee rather than tossing it.

Gale felt sick to his stomach.

"Otto," he said, and tried another shot.

"I swear if the last person I got to spend time with is you when I die? I'm gunna ******** haunt Deus like a poltergeist." Determined not to die in a dream, or have it repeat all over again, Otto struck it again, and again, and again.

He was lightheaded now, Gale swinging the gun around weakly as he dropped to one knee, gritting his teeth.

"Otto," he said again, turning to look at him. "Otto, I'm sorry."

It was a pathetic apology, but there wasn't much else he could say.

"Gale!" Otto growled, striking at the giant core relentlessly. "Don't you ******** give up on me!" He was exhausted. He felt every muscle in his body weaken. Even in his voice, his fatigue was obvious. "I ain't dying here!"

And with that final strike everything shattered and the world turned grey. The children were gone. The red trees, sky, the strange abomination was gone. Instead they were in the inside of a long hallway. For some reason their feet had already started walking even before they could realize or protest.

At the very very far end was a single prison cell, luxuriously decorated in beautiful golds and silvers like no other. Black thorns escaped from between the prison bars, curling into the walls, the sides.

A hand suddenly shot out from between the bars, just a slender red hand.

"So the first wall breaks." A female voice, commanding and cold. "This cage is too shallow, I can feel the edges. It was so, so easy to find the end of the maze. Tell them something for me. Tell them to build a better labyrinth, tell them I cannot be contained-"

- "Misters! Misters!" Several rough, tiny hands were shaking Gale and Otto. They were still inside the game where everything was still red.

The kids however had mostly gone, all but a few. Aiden stepped forward. "You did it. We're free. Come with us." He pointed to the black gap, a large hole literally punched into the system. "Come with us, this way out."

There was a voice, something he couldn't identify; unfamiliar and grating, cold against Gale's mind. His eyes moved to the cell and then to the thorns and then to the red hand that extended from between the bars, and none of it made sense inside of his aching head.

Fingers jabbed into his upper arm, and Gale turned, staring at the children clustered around him. He twisted to look at Otto, a look of confusion on his face, and then his gaze traveled to the gaping black hole that seemed to be a rip in the universe.

"Okay," was all he managed, his own fingers curling around Otto's wrist as Gale yanked him forward with the others. "Lead the way."

"Why me!?" Otto growled, on edge after all that had transpired. It was hard to let it all roll off his back. The red handed figure, menacing in his memory. What had that thing been? They didn't unleash something did they?

Otto grumbled, leading them into the void in space. Please, he begged in his mind, let this be the way out.

The little girl was holding Gale's hand again, leading him forward while Aiden begrudgingly fell to pace beside Otto. Through the crack the dark red began to bleed into a strange, surreal landscape.

"Don't look," the girl said suddenly, "you'll get sucked right in and never be free."

They walked for a bit more, finally reached a gate drawn out in pure vibrant white.

"Well," she continued, "that's it." The procession of children grew quiet. Nobody walked in first.

Aiden too hesistated, and then turned away.

The little girl, now wearing a small white dress, long and simple, squeezed Gale's hand. "You need to tell him it will be okay. You have to tell everyone to let go."

"No!" shouted Aiden suddenly. "I mean, not yet. I don't- I'm not ready. I can't- there's still- I can't go." He sniffled and then hiccuped loudly. "You don't understand. We're- we're all already dead. We'll never wake up. You guys- you guys weren't around long enough, we can't wake up anymore. If we go through the gate, then there's nothing."

"I'm scared", chimed a second kid, moving in closer. A third echoed the same sentiment and then a fourth. These were the last memories of children that had nothing to return to.

He felt overwhelmed and the gate was almost too bright. Gale squinted, eyes narrowed against the glare of white, and felt the warmth of the little girl's hand against his own. He glanced down at her, expression slightly bemused, and then up at Aiden again.

There's nothing.

We'll never wake up.

We can't wake up anymore.

His head ached. Gale squeezed the fingers of the girl and stretched out a hand to the boy.

"It will be okay," he said quietly, even though he didn't know the truth of that himself. His eyes moved briefly to Otto and then back to Aiden again, hand still outstretched towards him; a silent invitation. "It'll be okay."

Finally. The light. They'd be safe in their bodies once more. Back to their home, to their friends. Otto's heart beat faster, so ready to be out of that terrible game world.

But then that joy ceased.

These children were here too long. They were already dead. They had no chance. He looked back at Aiden, his heart falling miserably at the young boy's words. He'd died long ago, his life stolen from him. Had he been taken here, too? Forced here by someone?

He turned away again. The victory had been brief. Now it was dirty. Tainted. He didn't feel free anymore.

"Dude.." Otto murmured, looking back. "It's this, or going back to that Red place. That's ain't no life either. Come on.. You been trapped here long enough." Nothing about this felt right. Trying to convince a child to let go like this.

Aiden begrudgingly took Gale's hand and then wiped a large ball of snot on the back of Otto's shirt. With his now clean hand, he rubbed at his eyes. Despite being an apparition, he looked painfully real. "I don't need you guys to tell me." He tried to look impervious with mixed results. "We saved you anyway. If it weren't for me you'd still be chased by Peter Pan. After that, not scared of any sort of pain."

"If its any consolation," said the little girl, "it doesn't hurt at all."

The other kids silenced as she walked over and took all their hands. Gale and Otto were big almost adults. They had said everything would be fine ao why wouldn't it? The little girl turned around. "Are you coming Aiden?"

"Y-yeah hang on." Aiden slowly let go of Gale's hand and shoved his own hands into his pant pockets. He walked over to Otto again and sized the Hunter up and down before turning around-

- And in the last second giving Otto a quick, tight hug. It was getting white now, the children were whispering something-

-Goodbye.

"I wish-" Aiden looked down and then shook his head. "Nah, whatever. Thanks for nothing you losers." He hastily ran over and joined the procession of children. At the last second before it became unbearably white he turned around- whispered something-

"Goodbye."

And then it was quiet again and there was just the two of them. The two of them, and a little girl who stepped back into the gate alone. Her white dress seemed to blend into the gate itself. "Are you leaving as well?" She tilted her head to one side but didn't quite look like one of the lost children anymore.
