"Got it!" Ronan still wondered if they'd be able to out run the demon however. They needed a distraction for some extra time, but he couldn't figure out what. The makeshift flamethrower he'd used on the wasps was a no go with the risk of -

Actually, maybe that was exactly what they needed.

Grabbing the aerosol can of bug spray out of his pack he also pulled out the lighter and some of his rope. Soon the lighter was tied to the can with the top right in front of the spray nozzle, and a another bit of rope to keep the button down and the can spraying once it was tied.

"Whatever you two do, don't stop running!" He broke out into a run, and once he was sure the raevans were on their way too he lit the lighter then tied the rope over the button tight, the flamethrower coming to terrifying light once again. One second, two seconds, then turning around, checking the path, and throwing the flaming can right at the demon.

Ronan didn't look back again, and continued to run like hell (including dragging either of the raevans if need be), but a few moments later there was a wash of heat and noise behind him, the explosion almost causing him to topple over. Holy s**t.

Now just to hope they had gained the time they needed.

Eiry wasn't sure what he expected from this radical brand of heroics, but he certainly wasn't anticipating that the demon, especially after his shout tactics, would actually physically hurt him. The ghost sigel had only so much time to work his scary shtick before the baphomet swatted him away, and, surprisingly, affected his wings. Now, Eiry, like any raevan, had an physical attachment to his wings despite their ghostly nature, and he, as soon as his wings were snuffed out, gave a sharp and startled cry. He dropped to the forest floor as he was tossed to the side, unable to will himself to float in time. His chin bounced off the ground, sending his glasses skewing on his face. He reeled for a moment, feeling his ghostly magic suddenly extinguished, and he struggled to make the flames on his back lick back to life again. He only managed to get a candle's flame worth. Eiry panted heavily, his mind was ringing with the demon's words, as if that smoke he breathed was spilling into him, sickening his stomach, and he couldn't help but think over and over.

He always said you were an annoying prat.

Despite Eiry's better knowledge, his gut hurt from that statement, because it was one that he had held close to his heart as an explanation for his wobbly sibling ties. He had hardly a chance to speak up when the firm grasp of his brother anchored itself onto his arm, yanking his floundering body from the ground. Eiry struggled to float up again and pursue his sibling as they started to break and run from the baphomet. "Hurry," blurted Eiry, as he dragged behind after Rivener, trying not to notice all the wounds upon his brother's person, "That thing...It isn't Zul! It's dangerous! We have to hurry!" Then he noticed Ronan. He hadn't quite met this fellow before, perhaps seen him in passing once or twice at events or even when he was helping at the Lab, but he was about to formulate a strong opinion about the Selkie: He was not only ingenious, he was a, as Rivener would say, a "badass".

He watched with wide apple red eyes as the man performed some kind of science upon a can of bug spray, something that his own prankster mind could appreciate, and then tossed it over their shoulders at the demon as they made their desperate attempt at a get away. Eiry had followed the arc of the spinning fireball, and gasped when it exploded before his eyes in a bright balloon of strangely scented fire. Thank goodness it was raining, he thought, the forest would not have to fear the fire, but hopefully, the baphomet would. Perhaps it would stop it, he hoped, perhaps it would just evaporate into thin air.

As the fire burst in front of it, the creature looked like hell -- quite literally. Black flame licked at it, angry oranges and reds fighting to grasp hold on it. It was fire and brimstone and a demon, and out of the mess came the same.

The demon continued forward after the trio, a hissing laugh flitting through its teeth as it went through the fire. Smoke gathered around it, and the fire stayed in its mouth -- it seemed amused by the idea that to get rid of a demon, you should throw flames in its direction.

"You'd like to think it isn't, wouldn't you?" The baphomet continued, its voice calm despite its speed. It went quickest after Eiry, its cloven hooves swift and rhythmic against the ground. "But you'd like to think you meant anything to anybody. When has anyone ever wanted you?"

"I am no longer bound," it whispered, gaining on the minty sigel, smoke enveloping Eiry's senses. "I don't have to put up with you for him any more."

It reached out a wide black claw for the sigel's neck.

((EIRY, roll a number 1-3. If you roll a 3, the demon will catch hold of Eiry's neck and he will not be able to escape.))

They weren't moving fast enough. Hindered by the brush and the vine and the branch, the three shoved themselves forward as the heat from the explosion cooled from their backs. Eiry was trying to focus on just barreling forward, but the voice that they so desperately sought to escape was coming up behind them. The minty raevan swung his gaze back just in time to watch as the demon, completely unharmed by the spray can explosion, lurched after them through the brightly lit scenery. It was speaking again, calmly flinging questions at them, confidently speeding after them, but not just talking at the fleeing group...It was talking directly to Eiry.

Realizing that he was the focus of the baphomet's attentions, the minty raevan began to feel that familiar tabor of fear in his heart. Why was it focusing on him? Eiry knew that the real Zul was no where near here, his arms heavy with the limp body of his guardian, but that didn't stop this apparition, this thing, whatever it was, from fearing his knowledge. Perhaps that's why it was focusing on him. Perhaps Eiry was a threat.

With his mind spinning with these possibilities and questions, Eiry couldn't help but also latch onto every word made by the baphomet. Those doubts were sinking into him, and Eiry was wondering now why and how did this thing know about his doubts and insecurities, all those worries he had. Deeply rooted within him was this terrible fear that he wouldn't mean something to anyone, that if he were just to wipe away from existence, there would be no loss. He had just had an explosive existential break down in the woods, just a little farther back, his red eyes snapping to the red taint of blood on his sleeves, and he had to swallow a lump in his throat. That one question from the demon was ringing in his pointed ears, getting louder and louder with each reverberation. The smoke was everywhere, making his eyes water, making him cough as he heaved for breath.

When has anyone ever wanted you?

Eiry bit his lip and tried to focus instead on the grip on his brother's hand upon his wrist, but it was also in that moment that Eiry realized the demon was upon them, the heat enveloping their backs, the hot breath of the baphomet upon their necks. The ghost raevan threw his head over his shoulder just in time to hear the demon's threat, and with a loud cry, he ripped his arm away from Rivener's grip, throwing himself backwards in an attempt to escape the sudden and large black hand that shot out for his neck. He had just managed to dodge the demon's claws, hitting the ground before trying to scramble back up as the demon loomed overhead. He had to try and catch up with the others, and while he desperately wanted to call out for his brother's help, he knew that Rivener was in no condition to do anything. He saw the burning welts on his arms and hands and Eiry was untouched in comparison. Eiry still had to protect Rivener.

"GO! GO!! Keep running!!" Eiry shouted, forcing himself back into the air without the help of his wings. He couldn't hold them back. He would put them all in danger! He had to keep up. "Don't stop!"

Rivener gasped at the explosion, then his eyes widened as the baphomet behind him spoke again. It sounded like Zul so much, but what was he talking about? Putting up with Eiry for HIM? Had Zul hated Eiry?! This had to be a lie, didn't it? It was so out of the blue! Water blinded Riv as he tried to burst through the bushes and vines, tears unshed and heart pounding so hard it HURT as he tried to keep himself believing that this was not the real Zul, NOT THE REAL ZUL.

Suddenly Eiry was wrenched from his grip and the Scorpion stopped in his tracks, yelling. "EIRY!!! Ronan, we lost Eiry!!" Riv wasn't about to leave his brother behind. The suggestion he would just "keep running" made him frown angrily. "NO WAY. We're going together or we're not going at all! Come on, come on!" He rushed back and grabbed his brother's arm again, keeping an eye on the Demon and making sure he could avoid any hit.

Ronan didn't even hesitate when Eiry told them to keep running - he turned around and went right back to get him. "I'm not leaving either of you behind," he said, assisting Rivener in helping him up The demon was still very much an issue, yes, but ther was no way he was going to keep running when the others weren't.

The demon halted in its steps as Eiry eluded him, clawed hands swiping the air fruitlessly after hoping to crush the sigel's neck in its wide, strong palms. The skin on the demon was perfect, smooth and a black so deep it was nearly purple. It moved with an inhuman grace, even as it turned and tried to snatch Eiry again from the air, calling to mind the darkness and power and motion its breed had given to the demon Raevan.

"Why do you not tell him now?" the demon continued in its rolling, smoky voice. "Why do you not admit? What you did to me those months in the house. How dearly you wished me gone. Tell him, brat, why don't you?"

It hunched, delivering another punch toward the ghostly sigel, its eyes flashing a true and deep anger. The cloven feet beat the ground, and in another step, one of the demon's arms managed to clip against Eiry's back, sending the sigel directly at Rivener in a mass of limbs.

"Admit it to his face," he seethed, his eyes catching Eiry's even when the rest of him could not. "You want this. For me to be gone. You always wanted this."

Dear lord it wasn't stopping, the baphomet kept reaching for him. With his heart slamming in his chest, Eiry flung himself to the ground and tried to push away from the palms and claws that reached for him, even as Rivener and Ronan both rushed to the rescue. They couldn't help, Eiry realized, as the demon swung it's open talons at him, and this would end horribly if they couldn't figure out some way of battling this demon or dispelling him away. Eiry felt Rivener's hands wrap around his arm, pulling him out of the reach of the demon as he snapped forward again. Eiry was almost grateful that his wings hadn't been able to flare back to life yet, still coughing little splutters of fire against his back, otherwise they would have been ripped to shreds by that baphomet's hands, yanking him back far too easily into his grip. Behind them, the demon rumbled on.

Why do you not tell him now? Why do you not admit? What you did to me those months in the house. How dearly you wished me gone. Tell him, brat, why don't you?

Like the smoke he breathed, the words of the demon slipped into Eiry's head, clouding his thoughts. He knew that this couldn't possibly be Zul, he knew that it had to be something else, the forest, an illusion, something, but the ghost sigel couldn't deny those questions. The demon knew something that Rivener did not. He must have been attaching itself to Eiry's fears, the worries he had brought in to the forest with him from the moment this quest started. Then pain suddenly exploded in Eiry's back, centered around his scapula, sending him spinning and crashing into Rivener, and their bodies into the broken foliage of the forest. Eiry had cried out and in their tumbling, as the brothers tried to peel themselves away from one another, he caught the bright white hot gaze of the approaching baphomet, freezing him there. Eiry couldn't move, locked in the demon's gaze.

Admit it to his face. You want this. For me to be gone. You always wanted this.

In truth, he did.

Eiry, breath heaving heavy through his chest, his red glasses skewed on his chest, shouted back to the demon, a defeated cry. Perhaps truth would save them? It was what the demon wanted after all. Even when he wanted to keep this secret from his brother, he couldn't now, not when their life could depend on this. Not even trying to get up, the sigel gathered his breath and screamed, "I did!! I hated you! I wished that you would disappear or leave or something, anything to just leave us alone! I wished that you would evaporate like a bad dream in the morning sun!" Wrapping his arm around his torso to hold the sharp pain in his back, Eiry looked to Rivener and shook his head sadly, the only motion he could muster right now to express his grief over this unburied truth. He felt like dirt for saying this. He felt like he should be the one to disappear for admitting this carefully kept truth from Rivener, "I hated Zul for the longest time. I really did. I would try and drive him out of the house by haunting him or bugging him, doing everything to make his life miserable while he lived with us. I was selfish and cruel. I did that because I hated the idea of losing you. You were my world back then. I didn't want to face the possibility of changing my life to move on without you or being pushed out of your world to make more room for Zul. Even then, when Zul left the house, I was still pushed out, but I didn't try to push back either. We drifted and it was my worst nightmare come true. But that was so long ago, Rivener, we've had arguments about this and we've fought over it, and I refused to budge, but, despite it all, I've changed. You may not believe it, and I can't force you to believe it, but I don't hate Zul anymore. You have your own life, and I have my own. But I still miss you. This trip...I've been doing my best to try and make peace with Zul, to be better with him, to somehow show him that I don't hate him anymore, to tell him I was wrong. But even then, I was wrong. He still hates me, and I don't blame him. I earned this. I earned this..." Eiry felt his bottom lip trembling despite his efforts to keep his face grim. He grit his teeth, his brows knit into knots above his watery red eyes and looked up to Rivener and shook his head miserably, "This is my fault. Because of me, what could have been something beautiful, was made into something tense and forced. I ruined your relationship with Zul."

Eiry hung his head, quickly losing his will to fight. The baphomet's words were like poison to him. The demon was right.

Rivener was shocked to hear the demon taunt Eiry into admitting something that sounded so farfetched. But within moments of their struggling to get away the baphomet shoved Eiry into Riv's arms and the two Sigels went careening into the bushes. Riv thought this was their chance! He tried to get up, tried to get away so he could pull Eiry to safety, trusting Ronan to be okay since the monster was apparently focusing on the minty Sigel...

But Eiry, instead of running away, began admitting things that couldn't be true. Rivener just stared at him with outrage in his eyes, mouth agape, hardly even paying attention to the demon that threatened them. "You what?" he asked, shaking his head. This couldn't be. "YOU'RE the reason Alex and Zul didn't come back to live with us? YOU'RE the reason Alex had broken up with Aphi in the first place, to stay with Zul? YOU'RE the reason Zul didn't want to come live with me at home, YOU'RE the reason I moved out..."

Riv shook his head harder, shoving his brother away from himself. "This is a trick again. That's not Zul, and you're not Eiry." His eyes watered, he looked furious and heartbroken. "Ronan, you were right, this isn't real. This isn't real. We have to get away. Leave these apparitions behind." The Scorpion's voice was cracking with emotion and he began trying to work his way through the woods, away from Eiry and the demon, towards Ronan. Towards what would hopefully be safety. If they could get far enough away from these crazy illusions they would give up, right?

To say that Ronan didn't know the history between these two would be an understatement, but something in the words from the minty sigel had a sound of truth to it. Also, while it might have been another thing that would harm Rivener there were too many inconsistencies with the other encounters they'd had so far. Rivener was going to leave an innocent participant behind and it was up to him to change that.

With an irritated growl Ronan went past Rivener and back over to Eiry, picking him up and dragging him over to scorpion. What he was doing next was incredibly stupid, but hey, why stop now? Placing one hand on the back of each sigel's head he grabbed their hair and slammed their foreheads together.

SMACK!

"Save the family issues for later you idiots!" He yelled, forcibly dragging the two of them behind him. The whack hadn't been hard enough to injure, but hopefully it would be enough to clear their heads.

As Ronan takes a hiatus to smack the brothers' heads together, he -- perhaps unwisely -- forgets about the raging demon hot on their trails. The pause of motion is enough for the creature to catch up, and with another mighty sweep of his arm, he lands a hard punch, sending the selkie flying into the brush.

The brothers, no doubt light-headed from being headbutted forcefully into each other, see the demon linger...

... but this time he does not raise a hand.

He seems strangely amused. A wicked smile curves his lips. His black eyes are light with mirth.

"And there it is," he says, his voice warm and full, so richly Zul's at his deepest amusement that it causes tremors. Who was to say he wasn't Zul? The injuries that have eaten Rivener's hands and his stomach -- those are real. That electric smile -- it was real.

And Eiry's words.

Those were real.

"You will never hold your beloved again," the demon tells Rivener, beginning to smoke, his body disintegrating into the very air. "Just as you shall never look at your brother the same way again."

The blackness melted from his eyes, saving a glimpse of the living blue that once was Zul's, as the demon evaporated, pleased with what he had done.

"But I take your regards with me..." He whispered as he went, his voice crawling under Rivener's skin, through his muscles and his bones, and burrowing into his heart.

And then they were alone, two brothers and the words they'd said.

((RONAN -- roll a number 1-4 to determine the extent of Ronan's injuries. 1 = mild-to-medium, 4= severe.)

Like dirt. That's how he felt. When his brother turned to him, his eyes filled with outrage at his divulged secrets, Eiry thought, then and there, he should just lay down and give up, give himself over to the earth for an early burial. He hated that look in his brother's eyes, and to be honest, it was the most painful thing he had experienced in a long time, more painful than anything. The only points in his life where Eiry could honestly remember regret and guilt were all moments that had to do with his brother, with disappointing him or making him angry. In that moment, Eiry was sure that Rivener would just leave him behind, let him rot into the very dirt that Eiry was slowly convincing himself he should crawl beneath. Eiry could only nod to every accusation, his own red eyes welling up with guilty tears. He was a monster.

Rivener then shoved Eiry to the earth and the ghost sigel, cast away by his brother, could only catch himself against it and turn himself away to blink heavy tears from his eyes, unable to keep the gross expression of grief from carving itself into his face. From behind his shaking shoulders, Eiry heard his brother again.

This is a trick again. That's not Zul, and you're not Eiry.

Not Eiry. The ghost sigel forced his gaze towards Rivener in horror, unable to believe that his brother would even deny his existence, that he would convince himself that he was an apparition as much as the baphomet, in order to deny his honest attempts to be truthful in face of a demon who was forcing it out of him. His very own brother would refuse him, abandon him here...Eiry let go of a couple loud sobs at that, unable to make any of his grieved sounds shape themselves into words. What could he say? What could he possibly bring now that could possibly heal all of this? Convince his brother that he was real? That, despite his horrible truth, he was not a part of the nightmare?

Eiry had hardly any time, though, before Ronan, with the baphomet closing in on them from behind, rushed over to Eiry even as Rivener rushed away and hauled him up from the earth, dragging him towards his fleeing sibling. The minty sigel was still sobbing aloud, not knowing what to do or what to say, and it was in the middle of his blubbering that he felt Ronan's fingers grip tight in his hair, pulling it into a firm knot, and then he slammed his head with Rivener's. Now, he had always thought that Rivener was a thick headed sigel, but he had never really realized just how true that statement was until he felt his cranium crack against his. Ronan shouted something about family issues, and then suddenly, the baphomet was behind them, his shadow enveloping the lot of them. Ronan was suddenly caught by the swing of the demon's fist, launching him into some nearby bushes, and Eiry cried out as he disappeared, suddenly exposing the two brothers to the demon towering above them. Eiry looked up, his head still ringing from the knock, and stared with a steadily rising fear as the demon spoke, so pleasantly beside himself, so deeply amused. He was grinning, his eyes flashing a familiar blue. Slowly, still spilling his poison, the demon disappeared, it's quiet promises landing like grenades before Rivener and Eiry. As soon as the demon disappeared, Eiry, continued to sob heavily, feeling like his gut had been ripped open, exposing all the ugliness within him. Still sobbing weakly, he picked himself up, unable to look at Rivener and see that horrid look in his eyes again. The demon was right. Rivener would never look at him the same way again. He would probably not even try to speak to him again after all of this. Struggling to light up the ghostly flame of his wings but failing, only managing a splutter or a cough of flame, Eiry couldn't get himself to float at full height. He only managed only to float a little bit, eventually just relying on his arms to crawl as he went to find Ronan broken body in the bushes.

"R-ronan..." he called with a broken voice, "Ronan! It's gone...! Ronan, are you alright!?"

This was beyond confusing. And it was tearing Rivener apart. But he truly did believe this was all one big trick. His love wasn't dead, and his brother wasn't here admitting to such horrible things. What was worse, Rivener couldn't put it past his bratty sibling to have done all those things. He couldn't just laugh it all off and say "PFT, Eiry would never do that." And that sat like a lead weight in his stomach.

As he reached Ronan, instead of turning tail as the Scorpion had expected, the human grabbed him by the collar and yanked him back around to smack his head against Eiry's. "OW!" The Scorpion groaned as his skull cracked against his sibling's, and Ronan's words shot through the pain deep enough to get Riv's cheeks going bright red, embarrassed and angry. What in the hell-... Couldn't Ronan see there was no way this was real? Why was he suddenly believing EIRY was real, when nothing else was?!

And then, as though to prove he was truly here, the baphomet struck Ronan and sent him flying. Riv looked up with wide eyes, expecting attack, but the demon just stood there gloating. He'd only wanted Eiry to admit to everything. He'd wanted Rivener to know. The Scorpion looked over at his brother. Eiry had said he had come here to work with Zul... And maybe had pushed Zul to THIS? The baphomet's words all found their targets, Rivener starting to sob desperately again as he was told he would never hold his beloved again. That smile, that last look of familiar blue eyes, that VOICE...

"Zul," Riv called, trying to crawl forward to the demon. Trying to grasp him, touch him, keep him here because he was all Riv had left of his lover! Because if Eiry was real, then shouldn't that mean this demon was real too?! "ZUL!!!"

But the creature was gone and Riv could only claw and grasp at the ground, digging his claws into the earth and sobbing, shoulders hunched. He could hardly even care about Eiry and Ronan, but after a moment of trying and failing to compose himself, the dark Sigel wobbled to his "feet" and turned to the bushes Ronan had flown into, ignoring his sibling. Unsure if this was real or not. Not wanting to believe that it could be. If he believed, he would lose himself. So he had to keep believing this was all a big lie.

"Ronan," he called. "Where are you?"

In a way, he really should have seen that coming.

Ronan had only gone a few more steps before the demon appeared before them and punched him with bone breaking strength. Literally - there was a god awful crunching noise as the fist connected and he knew right then that at least two of his ribs had been broken.

The remaining force of the punch sent him careening into the brush. Part way through his flight his arm caught on a sharp branch, the point cutting a large gash and his wrist wrenched into a painful angle. Numerous other branches tore smaller cuts in both his skin and clothes and while they were not as large as the other one the combined volume was massive.

Eventually he came to a halt, but not in a way that was any less painful. His back and head slammed hard into a large tree, the selkie slumping down onto the ground as his back screamed and blood began to trickle from his scalp down onto his face.

"R-ronan... Ronan! It's gone...! Ronan, are you alright!?"

"Ronan, where are you?"

The voices only reached Ronan dimly as his head continued to swim, still winded and blood continuing to drip. A few attempts to speak were made, initially cut off from pain and lack of air, but soon he was able to get out a weak croak.

"Eiry... Rivener... here..."

With the baphomet gone, what remains is shell-shock. Drying magma on the trees that lead back to the burnt and cratered clearing, where the lava ice rock still lay alone. Smoke still lingering in the air from the demon's disappearance. And the shocking sight of Ronan, laying there against the tree.

With no distractions now, there is only horrible reality to contend with. Only the pain of the brothers' words to each other and the ground zero that their relationship had become. There was no taking back any of it, like they had stabbed each other, the flesh cut and the blood flowing. And Ronan in the middle of it, clearly paying the price. If only they hadn't argued...

Ronan's wrist, while not broken, is badly sprained. Almost instantly, it begins to balloon. What's worse is the gash, which needs wrapping, and Ronan can feel his ribs each time he takes a breath. He knows, almost instantly, that laughing will be a punishment for the foreseeable future. For weeks. Assuming he has weeks left, what with this terrible place.

The noises of the jungle, all the buzzes and croaks and howls, seem to reappear all around them. The late afternoon light filters through the thick canopy. Suddenly the jungle seems very large, and they so small and so injured and so alone.
