She giggled as she watched the cub and stuck her paw in her bag, rummaged in it a bit, and pulled out a golden bracelet and put it around the cub's paw. "You won the bracelet, little one! And in addition for it, i'll let you ride on my back if you want, that way you can see in a adults' view as we move on." She said and glanced at Kasoro, giggling softly as she lowered herself in a crouching position and started crawling next to the cub, offering the ride before she would catch up with the rest of the group, but still hoped those behind them would hurry up and make it. The rocks were raining less and less as they got farther and farther away, making it safer to continue their route, though she knew those rocks hurt them a lot and that most of everyone's energy could have been used up on the swim and they still had a long way to go.

Asami must have looked quite comical. Her feet were paddling like mad, but her head was lifted as high as she could get it. The bags strap dangled down, and Asami's eyes strained to catch a look at it, make sure no herbs were falling out.

In the future, it would likely have been wise to bring a slightly smaller back. She dared a glance to the Firekin adolescent and found she was faring far better.

Mouth too full to answer, Asami could only paddle faster as the rain of rocks began. Her eyes swung wildly upwards; in hindsight, this was a bad idea. A sailing pebble narrowly missed hitting her, and Asami trudged to the shore in double time.

She drug herself out, claws scrambling to get purchase on the rocks and her lungs breathing hard. Unlike Veru, she was more than content to fling water onto her passing fellows.

Once the majority of the group was out of the water, Veru started up the twisting slope back to the top of the canyon. It was rough on the feet, and a bit slippery, but there was a much more direct path on this side than the other. It also had the advantage of not being occupied by a bunch of agitated baboons.

Well, they'd at least learned two things about the large crag: the tip of it was flooded with precious water, and there were some freeloaders that would have to be chased off. But that was a job for the guards! He'd even tell Hraga himself.

He glanced over the group, estimating them with a quick scan of his bright eyes. It looked like no one had drowned, or been knocked out by any of the falling stones. He cleared his throat, and attempted to look respectable despite his mane clinging to his head like a wilted flower. "Well, that happened," he started. "We'll have plenty to report back, but for now, we have to get across the sand wastes."

His expression darkened somewhat. This part of the journey would no doubt take the longest, and was the least likely to reveal anything too startling. The sand was constantly changing, weather or no weather. "It'll take us about a day to cross over the most of it. From there, we'll set off to the outpost. That's the area most likely to have been impacted by the storms."

It was also the area most likely to give the Nergui free reign.

Nkera growled under his breath but did not complain about Veru’s orders. He hadn’t expected them to do anything about the baboons at that exact moment - at least not while the scouting mission took precedence. He gave the loud and annoying creatures a long look, a little I’ll-See-You-Later sort of expression and dropped his head down to take a few sips of water before turning to leave. The climb was easy on the guard, one who had spent most of his life in a mountain region and to whom climbing pretty much equalled walking. He was used to the uneven sand and tricky dunes by now but Nkera still found this little climb to be sort of nostalgic in nature. And soon it was over and the desert, vast and oppressing, opened up in front of him. Here we go, he thought to himself.

---------------------------------------------

“One of those stupid rocks almost hit me.” Baise said angrily, trotting after Veru the moment she’d been out of the water and slipping just an instant after. She was much more careful after that. “Ow, ow, ow. Be careful, guys. It’s slippery.” The pure white lioness was quiet for most of the climb, carefully making her way to the top after the two pale lions before her.

Unlike Nkera, she found the sight of the vast desert anything but oppressive. To the young adult, the sandy landscape was both freeing and exhilarating. If not for the fact that they’d be walking for a very long time, Baise would surely have broken into a mad sprint across the dunes. Well, the fact that such an action would make her look like a silly cub also weighed on her mind…

Like everybody else, Arevik slipped on her way up the other side. She thought she'd loosed a rock on Luut at one point, too, but couldn't be sure. Part of her decided he deserved it for the way he'd simply tossed his jackal into the water when it was unproven as safe or dangerous, but at the same time... She HAD shoved Moe in herself. As she reached the top, she was happy to see the sky much closer than through the opening of the canyon.

The bone-marked lion scowled at his cousin as a rock hit him on the nose. It wasn't a big one, so it didn't do much if any damage, but it was still ANNOYING. He reached to grab her tail and pull her back down, but slipped in the process. When he landed on the bottom, he let out a humph and started climbing again. This was NOT an easy task...

Moe was having a much EASIER time of climbing. Being much smaller than the lions, the jackal easily began to scale the hill, pausing long enough to shake his tail at Luut. "Look at you, ALL the way down there!" He grinned, then suddenly yelped as the two-tone red lion found his wind to rush up the slope after the jackal. As soon as he reached the top, even jumping on a lion's head to do so, he found a spot to hide from Luut.

The chill lioness laughed at Luut's attempt to take her with him, just managing to slip her tail away when he lost his balance. "Aw, you need to loosen up a little! All this crankiness can not be good for the heart, you know?" She chuckled and gave him a wave with a paw, before looking back at Ubawa, who had finally managed to drag his large a** up onto the other side of the water.

Ubawa didn't care about long walks or dangerous areas out in the open, he was just glad to be out of the water. He would take a more threatening walk than a light, easy swim any day of the week, particularly when baboons were involved. "When I get my claws on this little bright assed pieces of..."

"Easy there, Ubawa," laughed Volkeno as she continued to walk beside her friend, "you're going to get your face stuck that way if you don't learn to lighten up. They're not threats, and they're not going to be difficult to chase off, you know? So try and keep calm about it." She offered him a smile, but by that time he did not find her grins all that comforting. He glared at her, clearly blaming her for everything that had happened so far with his expression alone.

She didn't mind, though, still smiling contently as they walked side by side.

Maybe the others didn't seem so amused, but she was sure having a blast. There was nothing like a good adventure, right?

Mat, proud of her new bangle, trotted ahead with the lions as they left the baboons behind. She was more than set to walk for a while, tail swishing back and forth. It didn't take long for her to grow tired, though, and she glanced back to look for the young lioness who had been so helpful to her.

"Hey, can I ride on your back now?" she asked, pawing at the medic with a little smile. "My paws are getting tired..I didn't know we'd be gone so long," she admitted, feeling a bit silly.

Kasoro shook himself dry as he followed the other lions, his mane still rather sad in appearance. Thankfully his head no longer stung - the rock had been small, after all - and the journey took his mind off the rather embarrassing time back there. Falling off ledges, getting hit by monkeys...ugh. It was a good thing no one had seemed to notice. Horribly embarrassing.

After about an hour of walking, the group finally reached the last of the rocky earth. Like an ocean stretched before them, the desert seemingly reached out to the horizon, rising and falling in large dunes that might as well have been mountains. The air was hot and still, but experience told Veru this was better than the alternative. The last thing the group needed was to weather a small breeze and spend the entire trek to the western outpost being sandblasted.

So far, a few baboons notwithstanding, their luck had been pretty good. "Stick together," he called over his shoulder as his paws made contact with the hot sand. "We'll walk until midday, and then rest for a bit."

When Veru had first come to the Motoujamii, he remembered staggering about in these dunes. He'd been delirious and sick, both from the heat and the fever. Sometimes walking back through the same path he'd once taken gave him an odd sense of de javu. It hadn't impeded with his abilities as a tracker, but there was always a few moments of disorientation. As if maybe he'd never really found his way out of the desert.

He pushed through the feelings, and reached the top of the first dune. The sand buckled underneath his weight.

"After some walking, the group...

1 ... sees a large group of vultures covered over something in the distance.
2 ... sees a large rock jutting out of the ground. But there's something very unusual about this rock: its long and flat, and shaped into an archway.
3 ... hears a voice yelling in the distance.
4 ... notices the wind has begun to pick up.
5 ... is baked by the sun when the clouds recede.

The sloped posed little challenge for the dark lioness and she was near the forefront of the group as they set out into the shifting sands the stretched between the Firekin and so many of theri neighbors. Unlike Veru, her memories of this place were once of a childhood spent here learning every dip and fold, even as it changed. Morag had to fear, no trepidation about her homeland, only the respect it deserved.

It came as a surprise when, after only an hour or so of walking, Morag spotted something rising up from the sand. It appeared to be rock as the group moved towards it, but with a most unusual shape. Curious, the black lioness called to her companions as she moved to investigate.

"There is some sort of outcropping ahead. I'm going to check it out."

He was beginning to wish he had a pale coat like Arevik. Luut shook his coat, sending away the last drops of water as he climbed the dune after Veru, only pausing when he heard Morag's call. Something in the distance? His pale gaze traced the horizon until he spied what she had. It wouldn't be a kind walk...

Arevik glanced at the sky, though not at the sun. "I think the clouds are receding..." She was going to get a sunburn... Soon. She paused, shoving the jackal out of under her. "Go walk under Luut if you want shade!"

He looked up at the lioness with pleading eyes. "But he's so mean to m--" He yelped and scampered away at the clawed swat. The jackal let out a huff, then went after Morag. "Lions, no appreciation for those of small stature..." He caught up to Morag, trotting beside her. "If I may so offer, I can go places that you cannot, and have a VERY keen nose!"

Veru winced against the glare of the sun. Arevik was right- whatever cloud cover the group had had in the morning was gone. Now, there was nothing shielding the explorers from the brutal rays of the sun. Even worse, it would only get hotter as the sun continued to climb. Veru began the mental calculations to determine how much further they had to walk until they reached what could laughably be called shelter.

But Morag's observation in the distance gave him pause. Perhaps they had made better timing than he'd thought. There were some rocks a few miles from where they stood [or at least, where he thought they currently stood], but he'd never seen anything quite like she'd described this far east. "If it gets much hotter, it might be a good place to brake at," he admitted.

Veru followed in the black lioness' step. The object was casting a large shadow across the sand, dwarfing even its large size. It was a strange looking stone- flat, seemingly the same size from top to bottom. A hole had been punched out in the center, like a mouth of a cave. Although Veru couldn't be certain, it looked as though it had once stood straight up towards the sky.

These days, however, it hung at an angle. Just enough for the lions to walk under and through, as if the sands were slowly dragging it back into them. Faded markings lined the front of it, depicting strange creatures reaching up towards the sun. To Veru, they only barely registered as being unnatural. Whatever it was, it was ancient.

The white lion finally reached the shadow it cast, and felt some relief from the bright sun. He walked through the shadow in relative silence, observing the odd archway with a kind of awe. Beyond the archway there were a few other crushed stones that seemed to have the same markings- but nothing else. It seemed a lone island in the desert.

Volkeno didn't mind the heat, especially when there was something as amazing as the rock formation to look at. It perplexed her, making her wonder how it could have gotten there in the first place. It didn't look quite out of place, but in the same breath it also didn't look like it belonged there. More like... it had come to be very comfortable there for some time, and had become part of the scenery. She smiled, following the others in an awed sort of silence.

Meanwhile, Ubawa was still feeling pretty irritated by the water thing and was plotting ways to make Volkeno suffer for it. The large archway was lost on him, holding no appeal as vengeance consumed his thoughts. He could always push her into the sand, or hit her with a rock... something... anything!

He huffed to himself, following after her and the others. Why had everyone gotten so quiet? Looking around, he saw rocks and weird pictures, none of it meaning a while lot to him.

But Volkeno and a couple of the others were looking so mystified... weirdos.

Morag was quiet after her initial call, conserving her breath for panting as the sky cleared and the sun beat down like a ton of rocks on her back. In moments she felt like a hot coal had been set on her and it was distracting enough that she did little more than grunt at the jackal that addressed her till they were in the relatively cooler shade of the outcropping.

Immediately, the over heated black lioness dug into the sand until she felt coolness on her paws and then she threw herself down into the depression to press her burning back to sand that still held the nights coldness, protected from the sun by the rock's shadow.

White belly up, she sighed softly, taking a moment to cool herself before she went to see what the others were doing. She should have worn a skin today... It hadn't crossed her mind that surveying would mean a chance that she'd be out in direct sun with no shade for a coat that drank up the sun, as embarrassing as it was to admit her lack of foresight.

One never got used to the sweltering heat. Nono squirmed until the hood was jostled out of place and fell farther over her face. This sun would roast the exposed flesh her muzzle and nose if she was not careful. Experience had taught her it was better to suffer and sweat beneath the cloak than to burn beneath the merciless sky.

The stones were only as much of interest as they were of use. Nono wobbled on her stout legs to them, and sighed when a blessed shadow cast itself over her.

--

Niu had been guarding this pride for long enough to adapt to the heat, but there were times -- times like these, where the sky was nothing but blue -- where she'd have sold the soul her guardian Goddess taught her all lions had for a drink of water.

This ancient discovery was something she would have mulled over under different circumstances. It would be a topic of discussion with herself her next shift, when the nearest company was half a mile away and the hours dragged on in silence. For now, she passed through them with the others, reminding her weary paws that rest had not been earned just yet.

As soon as the water left his coat, Nkera was immensely glad for the dense, light-colored hairs that covered his body, protecting him from the deadly heat as well as sunburns. His dark mane was a completely different matter as it unfortunately absorbed all that his coat didn’t, making him awfully hot around his chest and neck. Obviously, considering how many had it so much worse than he did, the guard couldn’t complain – not that he was the type to do so.

The rock shaped liked an arch was somewhat interesting though he didn’t really care for it as much as those who knew the area but had never seen the outcropping before but he still followed Morag. There would be some shade somewhere around it , he hoped and a minute would be enough for his body to release some of the excess warmth, he hoped.

-----------------------------------------

Baise’s coat was quite thin but it still did quite well when it came to reflecting the light. She all but glowed as the direct sunlight hit the group but she knew today would not be without consequence. She fully expected to have one sunburn or two by the time night fell. She looked at the rock formation in awe, walking under it a few times before she settled in a shaded spot. It felt good after the long walk but she couldn’t say she was tired just yet. Baise was used to much longer trips and strenuous exercises as a huntress.

“It’s like it was built! Somehow. On purpose.” she said with obvious excitement, still looking up and examining the structure the sands had revealed. “I’ve never seen it before."
