Now this was the part she was good at, making the food look nice! After taking the tarts out of the oven and letting them cool down a bit she proceeded to cut three pieces for each of the judges. After setting each piece on the plate she topped the tarts with a sprinkle of cheese and garnished the place with a piece of parsley, because parsley made food look fancy. This dish would definitely be the prettiest and the tastiest, there was no doubt about it! No one would be able to deny the perfection that had been made by her very two hands. She deserved to win this festival, just like she had deserved to win all those before it! So far, things hadn't turned out right, but she was sure that was do to some rigging or something. Not this time though, she wouldn't stand for it! The people in this town could only be so stupid! How could they allow someone as wonderful as her to lose again?

How did one even go about properly presenting rolls? Weren't you just supposed to put them all in a basket or something? That's what they usually did for dinner. Or was she supposed to set one roll aside on a plate for each judge? This presentation thing didn't make any sense. Well, she guessed she would just roll with it (haha roll.) And so, Paige decided on the basket idea, because that's what she had always seen used and it had never failed her family before. Besides, the judges could just pick a roll out of it themselves, it wasn't that hard. They weren't looking for anything too fancy were they? Well, it looked like she'd have to figure out on her own. This dish would just have to be a trial of sort.

Anna Presentation Roll & Mathew Reply. αииα мαяιє ¢σя∂σνα-уσυиg ‘ What in the name of the goddess is he doing?' She was used to seeing the precision and perfection of Michael's technique but the giddy sight of his amuetur hand was comforting and warm to Anna. She smiled placidedly while John finished the cheese. Brilliant. Add no pumpkin to it. Theme was theme... with or without the baby! " I can make it look good, if anything." she said, although she had a jitter in her hands, " And no, I'm willing to bet no one will kick me, but you did do your job, I will do mine John. I don't want you thinking I'm just here to boss you around." Anna, Ms Married Anna, winked at Michael who looked quite ready to drink and retire. She knew that is she did not go over before we was drinking to put herself much closer. People were scetchey around here. WTF I don't know what it said before but my coworker slathered stupid all over that because she is a biiiatch.OOC || мαтнєωναℓєитιиє уσυиg ' Man, my dad practically pro. I mean, it's not like I hang around the kitchen watching him, but a guys gotta eat, right?' He grinned at Brian, feeling slightly embarrassed as the kid watched him so surprised while he fixed the dish, " I mean, we definitely nailed it. People won't expect it either." A cheesy grin plastered itself across the boys face as he rose for a high five and swung through, whether he met it or not. " I don't know what we can do for the next round though. I mean this and some dessert lookin' stuff is about all I got stored." With a tap to the side of his head, he nervously looked around at the other contestants. Maybe they would say something that struck good. Maybe a discarded idea, or if need be, a duplicated one. . OOC || 3 down. I'm going!! Lol finally!

Well, it was time to judge the first round! There had been so much going on, what with twenty-six teams to keep an eye on, and Alex just had to hope the food was better than it had looked from the judges' table...
1. Keith LeBlanc & Conor Alvey: 43 (-1 for poor technique) First was Keith and Conor -- Alex's business partner and his former boss. He gave the two a respectful nod as he approached their table, looking over their food with the best poker face he could manage. It was rather sloppily done, he noted, and wasn't the prettiest looking dish... He tried to hide his disappointment as he tasted it, and while it wasn't terrible, it really wasn't as good as he knew Keith's food could be. What a disappointing start.
2. Ferdinando Sonata & January Sonata: 3 Next were two teens who had made.... what the hell was that? Some sort of pumpkin puree dumped into a casserole dish? Flower petals? And was that.... Jesus ******** Christ was that hair...? After staring at the dish in horror, he took a spoon and scooped a bit, as far away from the hair as he could manage. You know what, judging didn't sound fun anymore. It took a lot of will power to put that spoon in his mouth, and.... ehh, it was okay.
3. Haruka Koyama: 6 Coming to the third table and the first solo participant, Alex ignored the middle-aged woman behind the table and focused just on the food. Some sort of tempura? It looked alright, not spectacular, but edible enough. Grabbing a piece, he took a pensive bite and.... Yes! THIS was what he had been expecting! It wasn't the most flawless dish around, but it tasted great, almost as good as what he could make himself! He nodded approvingly at the woman before moving on.
4. Mao Xiqui & Mei Hwa Li: 1 That last dish had sort of raised Alex's expectations, if not completely, then at least to the levels it had been before Keith and the Sonata's. Next were two people he recognized from the clinic, but from what he had heard of that place, these were two people not necessarily concerned with quality. ...Still, this pumpkin soup looked pretty decent. Probably the best this woman could manage. That was pleasant enough, but Alex was a professional chef, even well-made homemade soup was still homemade soup. Feeling rather confident about things, he sampled some of the soup -- and nearly spat it back out again. Dear lord what was this garbage? With nothing more than a disappointed grimace, he moved onto the next.
5. Gus Watts & Juno Watts: 2 Alex prayed to all the deities he didn't believe in that the next team would have something better than that last table. Oh lordie, the aftertaste was even worse than the food itself! However, it seemed that relief would not be coming anytime soon. It took him a moment to realize what he was looking at. What that.... Chex? Where was the pumpkin? It wasn't until he put some of their concoction into his mouth that he identified where the pumpkin came into play... but his moment of understanding was quickly overshadowed by the mediocre taste of the... whatever this was.
6. Vi Triggs & Sethrian Terkhynna: 45 [+1 for great technique] Alex was beginning to feel pretty terrible about the prospects of this competition by the time he reached Vi and Sethrian's table. ...Oh! But he had been looking forward to this team! He had noticed the man's solid technique while cooking, and the fondue looked quite good. Desperate for something of quality in this desert of awful, he anxiously took a bite -- and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was quite good. Thank god.
7. Tshila Curari & Xeiro Rameri: 5 Next was Alex's acquaintance, Xeiro, and some young woman that looked to be young enough to be the man's daughter.... Was she? Xeiro had married that horrible blonde woman, right? Not caring enough to give it much thought, he focused on the food. It looked quite nice, but... If he remembered correctly, hadn't Xeiro dropped something while cooking? Maybe he was remembering someone else. Trying a bite, he was glad that it wasn't terrible -- a little off, but maybe he could just blame the fact that Xeiro was a dessert man.
8. C.C. Cannon & Dodge Davenport: 54 [-1 for DDD=] Alex didn't want to come to this table. He reeaaaallyyyy didn't want to. He had seen them a couple times from the judges' table, and... It was suspicious, it all looked so suspicious. He approached the table cautiously, and... Oh ********, what the hell was that. Was he supposed to eat that? For a very long time, he stared at the dish, before swallowing his fear and squeezing his eyes shut and taking a bite... With his eyes shut, it actually wasn't that bad!
9. Ezekiel Baum & Gray Wellington: 3 Alex could not get away from that last table fast enough.... The next two guys were a relief, just because they weren't C.C. and Dodge! Their pastries looked pretty mediocre, but, well, mediocre was better than god-awful! Taking a quick bite, he wasn't surprised that it was neither good nor bad -- that was sort of how this whole competition was turning out.
10. Alfred Dahl & Angela Tremaine: 10 [-1 for poor technique] Next were two young people. Their food.... well, let's just say that Alex wasn't impressed, but he wasn't sure he could be impressed anymore. With a small shrug, he took a bite, and...
...Let's not talk about it.
11. Chloe Yadav & Cyrus Hayden: 54 [-1 for disappointing technique] Alex's soul had left his body and now he was a unconscious husk of a man who only existed to eat and eat and eat. He didn't even care how nice this dish looked -- what even was it? He couldn't tell, his spirit was too far gone. At least it wasn't the most horrifyingly bad thing he had tasted so far...
12. Schotelheim Reinbach III & Shinju Sonata 43 [-1 for poor technique] It took Alex a long time to realize that the next two competitors were not two people but a person(?) and an animal. He had thought it was just an ugly child at first. Not paying attention to what he was putting in his mouth (perhaps thankfully), he didn't really taste it much either -- it was neither good nor bad, just rather impression-less.
13. Ayaka Ando & Baba Babcocke: 6 Next was... oh! Alex liked Asian cuisine the best, so he perked up a bit at the sight of gyoza. Was it... pumpkin gyoza? Unusual! It wasn't the best made, nor the prettiest, but he could respect the attempt... And definitely the taste, as it was one of the most delicious things he had had that day! Maybe he could get the recipe for his own restaurant...

Why were there so many ******** teams? Alex was sure he had had enough pumpkin to last a lifetime, and he wasn't even done with the first round...
14. Jacob Waldroup & Zelynity Niami: 3 Next were a man and a woman who had made some sort of... dip? It didn't seem that impressive, but dip was a tricky thing to impress people with. He was just thankful that it didn't seem burned or to contain hair. But maybe he was giving it too much credit, while it wasn't horrible he didn't have high expectations of this dish. And he was right. It was pretty damn average. Just plain old dip.
15. Michael Pearson & Junior Waldroup: 1 The next group seemed rather promising -- pumpkin and garlic! An interesting combination! Alex appreciated some ambition in his cooking. What a strange combination of men, though... Alex popped one of the twists into his mouth, expecting a pleasant surprise, but... oh bleh. Bleh bleh bleh, it was terrible, why was his tongue burning like that? He hoped they couldn't see his eyes watering...
16. Umi Farouk & Riley van Kwil: 10 [-1 for poor technique] Next were... What where these? Alex felt his desperation growing, he needed something to get this terrible taste out of his mouth, and this... did not look like this would be the relief he needed. Whatever this dish was, it was burned and soggy, and Alex grimaced as he raised a bite up to his mouth. The moment it touched his tongue, he nearly choked. Well, it got the bad taste of the last dish out of his mouth, but now he had an even worse taste to deal with....
17. Michael Young: 46 [+2 for perfect technique!] He was probably one bad dish away from quitting as judge, when... Yes! This competitor had caught his eye during preparation with his gnocchi... His technique was flawless, as good as a professional! Alex eyed Michael thoughtfully as he approached the man's table. This was a man worth watching! Perhaps it was because of the previous dishes, but this was delicious. Alex was impressed, thoroughly impressed, and better yet, it had cleansed his palate~
18. Marie Young & Freja von der Bach: 6 Alex moved onto the next table, and found himself face-to-face with his wife. ...And some teenage girl he didn't know. For a moment, he wondered why his wife had paired up with a strange girl, but he figured it was best not to know. This was... he had been dreading it. He had avoided looking at Freja's table during preparation; they had been married for about twenty years, he knew that Freja had a different concept of "cooking" than most. The drink they had made was pretty enough, sure, but he still remained suspicious, refusing to make eye contact with his wife.
And who'd've guessed, it was excellent.
19. Eliza Monroe & Briar Appleton: 4 Next was a couple(?) who had made pumpkin waffles. Did waffles count as an appetizer? Sure, if you tried hard enough, you could pass anything off as an appetizer, but... Ehh, Alex was too relieved by the last two great dishes to be nitpicky. They didn't look that amazing, nor did they seem particularly well-executed, but as long as it tasted good... Better than others, but still rather average, he concluded with a sigh.
20. Elizabeth Monroe & Anneliese Dahl: 3 The next two girls had made some sort of salad? Another average-looking dish. Alex had rekindled some hope, but generally he was still skeptical. As long as it didn't make him want to gouge out his tongue with a spoon, he'd be satisfied! And indeed, any tongue-gouging would need to wait. It was a perfectly ordinary salad, but he gave it a pass.
21. Morgan O'Donald & Wilhelm LeBlanc: 5 ...Another salad? Well, maybe he should be surprised that there weren't more salads so far, it was a pretty simple go-to dish. This salad looked more or less on par with the last, and really, a salad was a salad. And this was a pretty good salad, he was pleasantly surprised to find out. Not perfect, but still pretty damn good. Maybe there was hope afterall.
22. Anna Cordova-Young & John Alvey-LeBlanc: 1 ...and that hope would soon be squashed. Next was some rather unappetizing dish that seemed sloppily done. Some sort of cheese balls, maybe? Well, he had tasted some things that turned out to be pretty good despite less-than-stellar technique and appearance. He didn't hesitate before sampling Anna and John's dish, but he did hesitate before swallowing. Just as he was starting to regain faith, another terrible dish...
23. Mathew Young & Brian Roman: 6 Alex did not have a lot of hope in the next team, which turned out to be two teenage boys. His memory of high school was that not many teenage boys were skilled cooks. And just looking at their dish verified this. What... even was it? He couldn't tell. It was a big mess, both cooking- and presentation-wise, and he reluctantly took a taste.... But it was actually pretty good! In fact, more than that, it was really really good! He gave Brian and Mathew a suspicious glance before continuing on...
24. Mitsukai Yoshiko: 3 The next was a young woman cooking alone. Maybe... she would have benefited from a partner. It did not look appetizing at all, whatever it was she had made (a paste? A spread?) nor had it been prepared particularly skillfully. However, he had to admit, after taking a small taste, it was not as bad as it could have been.
25. Elizabeth Berry: 1 The next girl had prepared some sort of tart, which looked quite nice, if not a little clumsy. Alex chalked it up to inexperience or nerves, because it was quite nice-looking. Maybe a smile would have made her feel more confident for the next round, but Alex Park only ever frowned, except for when he grimaced or scowled. He showed his support by taking one of the tarts and taking a big bite -- and he almost threw the rest of the tart right back at her. This was terrible... was it even a tart?
26. Paige Lewis: 2 The last contestant could not have come fast enough. She had made a croissant, and it seemed decently made, if not a little sloppy in presentation. He tore off a bite-sized bit of one of the croissants, and was not pleased at all. It was not as god-awful as the last one, but still rather disappointing. He politely set the rest of the croissant down, and, without a word, went to take his seat at the judge's table. This terrible round was over, and all he wanted to do was drink some water, lots and lots of water.

Murren could, miraculously still see straight when judging started. Though it wasn't really that much of a miracle. She'd only gone through two bottles and, really, it took a lot more than that to get her actually drunk. She was a little dubious about some of the food, but hey. She still had lots of booze she could use to wash down the more dubious dishes. 1. Keith LeBlanc & Conor Alvey: 4 Well, it wasn't a terrible start but she supposed it could be worse. In the end, whatever the thing was she'd just been served, it was, at least, not completely terrible. 2. Ferdinando Sonata & January Sonata: 1 EW! There was hair in her food! Murren took only a small bite of hairless....whatever that was and immediately took a large swig of ale to wash the taste out of her mouth! 3. Haruka Koyama: 3 Fortunately the next dish was a little better. Not great, but just kind of average. At least it didn't have hair in it, though! 4. Mao Xiqui & Mei Hwa Li: 2 4 (+2 for cooking technique)Ooh, soup! She liked soup! Sadly, the taste was kind of disappointing, but those two were so cute and they looked like they knew what they were doing so she thought maybe it was just her taste buds, and gave them some extra points for effort. 5. Gus Watts & Juno Watts: 5 3 ( -2 for suspicious masks and poor technique)Murren got distracted by a moth right as she took a bite, and really, even though the food probably didn't look or taste very good, she wasn't paying enough attention to really remember what it tasted like. She scribbled a score and took a long drink to wash the weird taste out of her mouth. 6. Vi Triggs & Sethrian Terkhynna: 1 3 (+2 for technique)She wasn't sure what she was served with this one. It looked really fancy! And it also tasted it like it had some fancy stuff in it but it was just kind of too rich for her. But it was really pretty and she'd been watching this guy cook and he really seemed to know his stuff so she gave them some extra points for effort, too. 7. Tshila Curari & Xeiro Rameri: 1 Er. She wasn't sure what this thing was at all! It looked like a pumpkin but it was totally not a pumpkin. She felt completely deceived! How dare they try to trick her with their little fake pumpkin...thing. 8. C.C. Cannon & Dodge Davenport: 10 (-1 for definite involvement of poison! )Murren almost couldn't bring herself to take a bite of this one. She finally managed a small bite and immediately spit it out and flung the dish at the offending chefs. "Are yer tryin' ter kill me?" she demanded, scraping at her tongue before whatever that was completely burned it off! 9. Ezekiel Baum & Gray Wellington: 5 Murren was pleasantly surprised by the cute little puffs served by the next duo! She'd really been watching them as they had cooked and they were magical men! She definitely approved (besides, they were both good looking, too.) 10. Alfred Dahl & Angela Tremaine: 3 Well, they'd tried. But unfortunately their little pasties were kind of creepy to look at and only tasted so-so. It wasn't terrible at least, so that was good...but they weren't all that impressive either. At least the burning in her mouth was starting to fade... 11. Chloe Yadav & Cyrus Hayden: 6 Murren liked this dish a lot! It was simple food--nothing fancy or shocking. And it looked really, really tasty. And after some of the mediocre and tongue melting things she'd eaten earlier, this was a welcome respite. She really liked it. 12. Schotelheim Reinbach III & Shinju Sonata: 5 3 (-2 for totally unsanitary animal companion)Well, pumpkin seeds were...well, they were seeds. It was hard to mess that up. But ugh...what the heck did that crazy looking fellow have helping him? A pig? An opossum? Possibly an alien? Whatever it was, it did not look like it had washed its, er, hands? 13. Ayaka Ando & Baba Babcocke: 4 The next thing she was served was okay. It was an unfamiliar food so she was a little hesitant to try it but it tasted okay. Not great though. But not terrible--all things considered, it was practically gourmet compared to some of the other things she'd had to eat.

Well, most of that had been pretty terrible. By the time Murren got through to the next bunch, she'd gone through another bottle of ale so maybe these would taste a little better! 14. Jacob Waldroup & Zelynity Niami: 3 This crunchy, weird dip was a little weird texture-wise but the taste was surprisingly, well, bland. It wasn't really good or bad, to be honest. Or maybe that was just the booze talking... 15. Michael Pearson & Junior Waldroup: 4 The next recipe was decent. Murren really liked fresh bread and these were nice and garlicky. She was kind of worried after one of the judges tried them and seemed to hate them, but they didn't seem that bad to her. Besides, food served by attractive men? Yes, please. 16. Umi Farouk & Riley van Kwil: 6 4 (-2 for being way too fancy for her.)Well, someone was really serving fancy things! A French delicacy and all that. Fancy things weren't usually her thing and all, but she felt kind of bad giving them a bad score just because her taste buds weren't used to all that fancy French stuff. (She secretly took off some points though....) 17. Michael Young: 3 4 (+ 1 for technique)Maybe she was still getting over the trauma from the last dish but these weird little dumpling things just weren't doing it for her. Still, the guy really seemed to know his way around the kitchen! That was enough for an extra point, but still. She only ate a couple, before kicking back the rest of her bottle to reset her brain a little. 18. Marie Young & Freja von der Bach: 3 Murren wasn't really sure a drink constituted an appetizer....but at least it didn't taste too terrible. 19. Eliza Monroe & Briar Appleton: 1 Murren was kind of scared to try this creepy looking dish. The taste wasn't great and it kind of looked mutated and evil so definitely NOT her favorite. 20. Elizabeth Monroe & Anneliese Dahl: 3 Another pretty average dish. Murren was really going to have to go home and cook something tasty just to make up for all this creepy food she was going to have to eat today. 21. Morgan O'Donald & Wilhelm LeBlanc: 2 Ugggh. Even the fact that these two were attractive couldn't make up for how awful this thing was! It looked okay, but the taste? Blech. 22. Anna Cordova-Young & John Alvey-LeBlanc: 1 2 (+1 for...uh...technique and totally not lack of objectivity)Ew! Another really gross one. Maybe if that frilly lady spent more time learning to cook and less time winking at the other contestants, she'd be a better cook. A pity too; she was really hoping her farm giant would fare better. 23. Mathew Young & Brian Roman: 1 No, no, no. She did not trust teenaged boys to cook anything! These things were too sweet and she was just terrified of what creepy things they'd put in there as a prank! 24. Mitsukai Yoshiko: 3 Well, it wasn't terrible...but she'd definitely tasted better (and, sadly, worse) 25. Elizabeth Berry: 3 What was with all these unimpressive cooks? Weren't cooking competitions supposed to be for people who knew what they were doing?? She'd gone through nearly two bottles of ale just to get through this round. Fortunately, by now, she wasn't sure she could even taste anything anymore... 26. Paige Lewis: 5 Woo! The last one! Murren convinced herself it tasted good just because she was so glad she wouldn't have to try anything else for a while! "Great job!" she told the contestant. "Yer a great cook!"

Once Alex had recovered a little bit, he grabbed the mic with a frown. He didn't like talking in front of huge groups of people, but he wasn't sure his fellow judges were in the best positions to be making announcements.
"Okay, so... I guess the first round is over with..." Awkward pause, he really didn't like these things. "Some of you were pretty okay, but others were godawful, so for the sake of my taste buds I pray the second round goes better. ...Anyway, the first round scores go as follows:"
1. Michael Young: 26 2. Chloe Yadav & Cyrus Hayden: 25 3. Marie Young & Freja von der Bach: 24 4. Haruka Koyama: 23 4. Tshila Curari & Xeiro Rameri: 23 4. Ezekiel Baum & Gray Wellington: 23 7. "Congratulations to the nine teams who got at least twenty points, I guess. Anything less than that... was disappointing. And because of some particularly horrifying dishes this year, the following teams have been ELIMINATED: Gus Watts and Juno Watts, Alfred Dahl and Angela Tremaine, Eliza Monroe and Briar Appleton, Elizabeth Berry, C.C. Cannon and Dodge Davenport, and Umi Farouk and Riley van Kwil. Everyone else may proceed to the second round." He didn't seem sorry at all.
"The second round will be entree, sticking to the pumpkin theme, unfortunately. You may begin.... now."

Holy crap. Cyrus really did not expect that they'd still be in the competition, much less be in second place. Bullshitting their way through might lead them to victory after all. For once, fate decided to be kind to him for granting him this partner. Either way, he still had to pull his part.
He set to work on a pumpkin ricotta ravioli, trying to make sure not to divide his brain too much on multitasking. After all, the last he did that, the dish turned out mediocre, and he had to rely on Chloe for help. Still, bad habits were hard to kill. In the end, some of the filling might have spilled free from the pasta. He gingerly handed it over to Chloe. "Your turn. And... thanks for covering my a** the last round." Ugh. Thanking people was still at the bottom of his agenda, but hey, he didn't want her to quit on him or anything.

"Oh it wasn't that bad," Chloe said. "Clearly. Otherwise we wouldn't be doing half so well as we are now. Though there's still a long way to go."She watched him cook, still pretty impressed that he could cook at all. So many men seemed to not consider it a very vital skill and there he was making his own raviolis. She stood along side, watching as he cooked. It was kind of nice to have a partner for this--not that they were doing a lot of talking or bonding or any of that, but company was definitely nice. When he was finished cooking, she took the plate from him and set about working on the presentation. This was always the hard part for her--particular with pasta since they were just so slippery and kind of messy. But in the end, she didn't think she did that terrible a job at it. It looked fairly appetizing, in her opinion.

He couldn't believe it. She dropped the damn pumpkin and cracked it and the judges scored them low and now they were in 6th place, behind eight other teams! Sethrian was pissed off and sulky and moping and he spent the entire time cooking, muttering about his idiot partner. "No, I didn't think you were too stupid for it until you dropped it and ruined the dish," he muttered under his breath as he started his pumpkin chicken curry. Unfortunately, he was so angry that he didn't realize he was seriously over spicing the dish. Not until the amount of spicy spiciness started to make his eyes water--and possibly started to melt his eyebrows off his face. He blanched slightly, doing his best to offset the spices with other ingredients but at that point he suspected it might be too late. Ugh. He hoped the judges really, really liked spicy foods. With an angry sigh, Sethrian pushed the pan toward Vi. "Well, you're up. Don't think you'll be able to ruin this one, though."

Gray and Zeke did so well in round one that Gray decided to try a slightly more ambitious dish for round two. Unfortunately, it meant less magic tricks and more focusing on his pumpkin risotto and seared scallops. It sounded a lot fancier than it really was, or so he thought. But it got tricky when it came to searing the scallops at the same time he was sauteing the ingredients for the risotto and, well, things got a little smokey for a bit. When he was finished, everything was a little...blacker than it should be. But it wasn't too awful. Just slightly burned...a bit. It was definitely still edible. He knew, because he did steal a scallop by making it "levitate" up to his mouth so he could take a bit. "Well, I'm not sure it's quite as good as the last round, but what do you think?" he asked, doing the same trick to get one of the scallops to Zeke, to try.
