Lothiriel giggled softly. "Good. I may not have gotten to know him well, but Elnara and Serenity had both made enough comments to make it quite clear that he worked far too much. Do tell them they need to visit, won't you? It's been far too long, and both of our families have grown since we last saw each other."

"And ours at least will probably still continue to grow," Pengolodh quipped with a grin at his wife, who laughed.

Daemon chuckled at the quip, because he knew it was true, "I'll tell them that. They could use a break."

A real break, one that involved traveling outside of the compound for a while. It would be good for them, in fact he figured it would be good for his daughter and her husband as well.

"Now, I would assume," Lothiriel went on, looking at Daemon thoughtfully, "that when you first ended up in our world, you would have left behind an occupation ... have you picked up an occupation now that you've returned? Or are you simply spending time with your family? I know they're quite well off financially, so I must admit, I'm not sure if you would have to work ..."

From her understanding, most of the children (or grandchildren) had their own specialties that brought the clan a good deal of wealth.

"Right now I'm just spending time in my family," Daemon looked over at Long and Long nodded.
Long explained, "Daemon and I use to be working partners, but well... I'm retired now and can't get into heaps of trouble like I use to. This crazy guy use to go on hunts for rare objects, or sometimes he was called in to deal with magical ones, but he needs a keeper."

There was a painful sigh from Daemon at that statement, but they both knew that was true.

"Though you could," Long ventured to Daemon, "Just get one of my nieces and nephews to go along with you."
"It's too much trouble to build up that kind of working relationship again," Daemon admitted.

"So you haven't been working, then," Lothiriel murmured softly. "How have you been keeping yourself busy, then?"

She imagined that he would be spending time with his family - a very large family it was, after all, and it would take a long time to catch up with all of them.

Then she realized that there was something else that she didn't know.

"How long have you been home, anyway?" she asked curiously.

"A few months already," Daemon admitted, "That's how long it took to catch up with everyone in the family, get at least some sort of familiarity with the new technology..."

He would admit, he was still a bit baffled by some of the new features of a computer and it was hard to wrap his head around the idea of a large wide network of information.

"Catch up on academic reading, there has been a lot of papers published in the many years while I was gone, actually I'm still trying to catch up on that," he mused, "And then trying to re-learn the languages I forgot. The family alone tosses around at least three different languages, four or five if you include the few who know the elven dialects of this world."

He scratched his cheek thoughtfully.

"And... we've been playing Go when I can drag him out of the library," Long added.

"Well, at least you could always keep up your elvish while you're there," Lothiriel laughed softly. "But I can imagine there would be a lot for you to catch up on. I don't know how long you were gone from home, but you were here for well over two hundred years, nearly three."

If not fully three hundred years.

"Kara was...." Daemon had to think about it, because it was so long ago now, "Around ten when I disappeared, so that is well over a decade and a half of catching up back in Gaia."

Though it sometimes felt like he was gone longer than that, and not just because it had been nearly three centuries being stuck in a sword. Donovan was all grown up, his daughter was married and had children...

"Though yes, nearly three centuries and spending two of those centuries alone hasn't done much more my language skills."

"Not to mention," Lothiriel added with a smile, "while you were in the sword, your communication was through the mind, so no language was required then, either. Otherwise you and my father would not have been able to communicate. So really, you've only been using languages again since you started coming out of the sword."

It did beg the question, how well did he even speak elvish? Either of the elvish tongues?
PostPosted: Mon May 27, 2013 8:23 pm

"Yes," Daemon nodded, "Though in the beginning, in that mental plane, we did use to teach each other languages. There was little need for it though, and while I did learn Elvish, I didn't need to really use to, or any other dialects once your father stopped traveling."

He probably couldn't speak any of it, but he could probably, after much listening, understand it well enough.

Lothiriel smiled at that. "I wouldn't know," she said simply. "That was long before I was born. Galdor after all is older than I am, and even he wasn't born until several years after Mother and Father married ... and they didn't marry for several years after Father had stopped traveling."

Whatever her claims to the contrary, it was clear that she knew at least something of what her Father had done before she was born; but whether it was because he'd told her or because she had Seen it was questionable.

Daemon chuckled a bit, "Well, that dreamscape was a personal thing, it was the only way we could communicate face to face so to speak."

At least as face to face as one could get while being stuck in a sword.

"Even played a few boardgames sometimes..."

"But even the dreamscape was technically through your minds," Lothiriel pointed out, "was it not?"

She had tried the same thing a few times with different people, and with varied success.
PostPosted: Tue May 28, 2013 8:17 pm

"It was," Daemon admitted, "But at least I can... roughly understand what people say around me. Of course, as you said, it's in the mind so speaking the language is a completely different thing entirely."

Being stuck around Gion though allowed him to understand, though his common elvish was quite lacking from years of Gion not traveling. Human Tongue and the Dwarf language was something they just didn't run into that often. Though Daemon had always wondered if Human Tongue had any relations to any of the many human languages spoken in Gaia.

As the adults spoke together, poor little Saria was getting more and more confused, until at last she couldn't help but speak up:

"Nako, Daemon, what's a dreamscape?"

The crease in her forehead showed just how confused she was, and her desperation to understand what was going on was clear in her clouded brown eyes.
