Beta nodded slowly, lost in her own thoughts for a while. "I wonder... what he was like..."
"Well, you're the one that belief works for, so... if you say so." Itzal closed his eyes. "But as a philosopher, I have to point out... if you did not think you'd find that special someone, can you really say that you firmly believe in the concept of soulmates?"

"I do not know, dear, maybe he was a little like you. I imagine we sometimes take the good and bad from our parents and sometimes we learn to be different than them as well,"Serenity spoke.
"Maybe not at the time, but our opinions change as we gain new insight or experiences. If we stayed exactly the same throughout our lives, then you really have not lived at all,"Jaromila answered.

Beta nodded again, nuzzling Delta. "I don't wanna be like... her. I wanna be like you, Mama."
"And what... would you call those... philosophically stagnant people?" Itzal asked calmly, a blue iris revealing itself to stare expectantly at Jaromila.

Beta smiled weakly at her mother, lightly resting her head against Serenity's leg. "I'm scared," she admitted softly. She was gonna mess up. Something bad was going to happen and she wouldn't be able to handle it...
Itzal huffed, his eye sliding closed. "Change is the last thing my life needs."

Beta nodded again, trying to hold back tears that had suddenly tried to fall down her face. "Thank you, Mama," she whispered. She was so relieved to be in this family...
"That's a different type of change. If I was completely opposed to it, I wouldn't have come here. However... I cannot have the psychological change you would wish for me to have." Itzal opened a single eye again. "Unless you're willing to risk everyone's lives for it."

"You are welcome, sweetheart. I wish I could take your pain from you, but I can at least help you carry the load and deal with your pain. I am your mother, I will never let you walk alone. Even when we are apart, I am always with you,"Serenity comforted.

Tears welled up and spilled over. Beta nodded, sniffling. "Unn..." Delta whined, nipping lightly at his grandmother's leg before trying to lick away his mother's tears.
"A single crack compromises the whole thing. More cracks will develop from it until everything shatters," Itzal replied calmly. "The risk is too high to even think about attempting."

"There there, sweetheart, everything will be alright,"Serenity soothed, feeling Delta's nipping, then she reached over to wipe away her daughter's tears with her snout.
"Is there not a safe location for you to make such an attempt?"Jaromila asked.

A watery smile formed on Beta's face as both her mother and son attempted to comfort her. Delta scooted over to Serenity's other side, pushing against her leg as if to push the mother and daughter together. A weak laugh left Beta's lips as she watched. "I-I think he wants you to join us." Laying down, that is.
"Not unless you find some pit that I'd have no hope of escaping from," Itzal replied. "If I lose my sanity, nowhere on the Isle would be safe until I died."

"Alright, Delta, I got it,"Serenity laughed as she laid down next to her daughter and grandson. She reached over and nuzzled her grandson, then wiped away more of Beta's tears.
"I suppose it would be dangerous to let you lose your sanity. Just think it is sad, since emotions are a good way to let us interact with the world around us. Also, allows us to get things out, like anger and fear,"Jaromila spoke.

Beta smiled and leaned against her mother, tears silently rolling down her cheeks.The smile widened as she watched Delta come scuttling back over, nestling himself at her other side. He was a sweet little boy... She hoped he always stayed that way.
"The 'anger and fear' part's the one I'm worried about," Itzal grumbled, shifting so that his head was turned away from his brother and Jaromila. Haides just sighed, though he didn't seem annoyed or disappointed.

"He definitely wants you to be happy, doesn't he? He is a good son, I know something about good children,"Serenity smiled, nuzzling her daughter gently, then looking over to Haides.
"Well, I am sorry you are worried about it, but understandable,"Jaromila admitted. She walked over to Haides and nuzzled him gently, glad they had each other to help one another.
