There is a wonderful manga that involves Gothic Lolita-style dolls.

It's called Dolls, by Yumiko Kawahara.

The manga features these special "plant dolls" sold by a gentleman who owns a fancy store in Tokyo specializing in these dolls and supplies for them. These dolls are incredibly expensive (we never actually learn the price, but it's always funny when the buyers do xd ). This is because these dolls are just about alive. They move, laugh, cry, and sometimes even talk. These dolls choose their owners, and are just about unsellable if the person the doll chooses decides not to buy.

It's a beautifully drawn and written, slightly dark manga that often questions the meaning of what it is to live. The Victorian dresses worn by almost every doll are a plus too. 3nodding

^My two cents. :
I've read some of this manga. It is really good.

I have an SD10 Nana that I named Sana. She doesn't have anything actually lolita yet, but here are some pics of here in some things I've made:

In this pic, the light blue dress came off another porcelain doll (dollfies are actually a type of resin), it's the cape that I knitted for her:

In this pic, I knitted the ear-warmer, and my sister crocheted the booties:

I also like the modern look on her:

modeling her pajama pants:

She was around $600.00 ^_^ I was lucky that the one I wanted was one of the cheaper ones. Now I'm obsessed with the Dream of Dolls, and I'm wanting to raise up money to get one of the SD sized ones to be friends with Sana. Whee! whee
Sana is really pretty. I've always been a fan of Nanas. whee I love DoD and the new Dream of Teens!

Ah! Shiro is one of my favourites! though it's very rare that he comes up for auction *tear* and when he does, a full set costs more thatn $1000 US.

I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find a Kurenai somewhere, like check yahoo japan

Try searching ボークス キュート 紅
or 橘四郎

I have three BJDs myself (BJD = Ball Jointed Doll) and they're not that expensive. If you only look for the 60 cm limited ones, of course they are expensive! But, if you want a 43 cm normal one,you can find very cheap ones. One of my babies is a Dana Girl from Angel Region and you can buy her in an Unfinished Kit *you have to do the make-up and assemble her* it only costs like 225$, shipping included. I'm a little tired of hearing people saying they're too expensive because, if you want one, you'll end having her/him, it's not that difficult saving the money *and I'm a student with no work*

I wouldn't recommend Dream of Doll... The heads are smaller than the rest of the houses so it's difficult to find wigs for them... The bodies have a horrible possability so you can't do good pictures or play with them as much as you want... Also other houses' clothing and shoes doesn't fit them either... All te people around me that bought a DOD ended selling them again...

If someone has any doubts, feel free to ask *^^* Two years in this world give lost of info *^^*

Yay! What are your little dollies friends names/types? I am curious.

I agree. It is quite tiring when people keep saying they are too expensive, when all they seem to be looking at are limiteds. Which of course are going to cost alot! Oh! You can get Unoa boy kits for a little over $400.

Hello! This is my first post on Gaia and in this guild.

I'm surprised by the lack of familiarity with BJDs or Dollfies (Dollfies is not the correct term to use when referring to companies outside of Volks), since Lolita is a trend with many doll owners. I absolutely love BJDs, but I've been spending my money on more important and necessary items. BJDs are, as mentioned, so expensive because they are made of a high quality resin which is very expensive in itself. The dolls also required a lot of workmanship to make and are often made as they are ordered. The dolls are completely customizable, so that each doll is unique to its owner. BJD owners often grow very attached to their dolls and believe that each doll has its own soul. There are several dozen companies in Japan and Korea; however, many are very small and difficult to order from.

I'm smitten with the idea of sewing a sweet lolita dress for a doll. BJDs are so perfect for lolita clothing.

Hello! To you! sweatdrop You are brave! I gave up along time ago trying to explain to people that the term "dollfie" only refers to the 1/6 scale dolls from Volks sweatdrop Anyways, just to add to what you were saying about how they are completely costomizable. You can change there wigs and eyes. Some companies offer optional parts likes hands, feet, etc. that you can use to replace you dolls original ones. The Unoa boys even have a "special" part. sweatdrop You can modify them (if you are brave enough) with knives to change their original mold shape.

I love Dollfies <333 (Well mainly Ball Joined Dolls since I want more from LUTS and Doll-More more than VOLKS) <.< Well I won't be able to afford one of my own until next year... but I'm planning for him right now ninja heart When I get my BJD though I'm going to crossdress him in Lolita and goth clothes XD

Is it cheaper to buy the parts seperately and make a custom dollfie (the 22 cm kind I think)? Also, are eye decals easier to use than glass eyes?

I'd like to own a dollfie... Maybe when I'm a bit older. (And when my sewing skills have improved so I don't need assistance starting and finishing ^^'')

They're so exspensive! But it's probably worth it. They're cute in a mysterious way. They're absolutely gorgeous.
