Shira do as Atticus instructed, after a few moments of the barrier shaking slightly, it would eventually stop and stay in place around them. After a few minutes of holding it until she was used to the feeling, the barrier would suddenly ripple away from them and fade. "I might need to work on holding the barrier longer, but that seems to be good enough for now." she said.

That is where the physical connection comes in. No, physical connection does seem right, I'll say that it is more like, linking our senses together as one.
