Jaromila looked thoroughly shocked when she heard Beta tell her what Haides had called Serenity.
"Wow, I did not expect him to do that, he did not seem to think of her as his mother. He told me he saw her as more your mother and that you were his best friend and they were your family. I am not sure how much that is true, since I still think he cares for them as well,"Mila explained.

Beta blinked. "He did?" She glanced away. "That's... probably because of me. Because I... don't see him as my brother." Her turquoise eyes lingered on Haides as she continued. "My brothers... left and never came back. Haides's brothers went missing. No offense to my new family, but... to me, Haides is more permanent than them." When she turned to Jaromila, the smile returned. "It makes me really happy to hear he called me that. Usually I say it and he just says, 'If you say so,' y'know?"
"As for what he called her... maybe it's because of something you two talked about?"

Jaromila felt bad for the pair, thinking they should have better images of family. She thought about what she had told Haides yesterday, wondering if her words had some effect.
"I told him to give them a chance, since they sounded like nice Azrein to me. I also told him that you can be best friends and siblings, since it is perfectly normal to happen. My sisters are like my best friends, I could not think of my world without them. My parents are very important to me and they wouldn't do something like your mother and brothers did. A real family is very permanent, they are there for you through thick and thin. My mother would probably balk at the idea of anyone abandoning their child. I may not know your new family, but by the sounds of it, they are your real family,"Mila spoke.

Beta smiled. "That could've done it. Haides is stubborn, but he listens. But the siblings and best friends... he's probably avoiding that for me. For him, it wouldn't be a problem, but calling him my brother would be... difficult." Painful. It would draw up the memories that Haides had helped put behind her. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she smiled and nodded. "Mm-hmm! They are. Serenity acts the way Haides says mamas do, and I have Kalyani as a sister, and Ve'ki acts the way Haides says daddies act too."

Jaromila was starting to think that this family meeting tomorrow was more important than ever. Beta only knew what Haides told her about family, so she needed to see for herself.
"Well, when you meet my family, you will see exactly what parents are supposed to be like and siblings too. I am sure you will see that like your new family, the family you had before was not much of a family. I do not know how any mother in their right mind could abandon a child, I just cannot. Also, try not to rule out having brothers, Beta, they are not all horrid things, at least I imagine they are not. I do not have brothers, there are all girls in my family, other than my dad,"Mila giggled a little at the last part.

Beta nodded, smiling slightly. "If Mama adopts any other boys or has colts, then I'll know," she replied. "Because Haides is Haides." Smiling brightly as she looked over at the grazing colt, she added, "He'll always be there, no matter where I go." At Jaromila's last comment, she giggled too. "Ve'ki says that a colt among fillies will go mad. I think that was his excuse for sticking around, because otherwise Haides would be the only boy."

Jaromila smiled softly at that, hoping Beta would get to experience what a brother was really like. She kind of wished she had a brother, but she was happy to have her sisters.
"You never know, your mom could definitely have or adopt more boys in the future. I think your new family will always be there for you too, I have a good feeling, even if I have not met them. I wonder if my dad has gone crazy surrounded by so many girls. From what Haides told me, Ve'ki may have feelings for your mom,"Mila spoke.

Beta blinked. "Is that so?" She thought about it. "Hnnn... he does spend a lot of time with her. He says his brother told him to take care of Mama and her foals before he died." Her expression lightened as she continued. "Haides likes him a little better than the others. He says they're similar."

Jaromila nodded her head to the question, knowing that's what she heard.
"Yes, he did seem to indicate that Ve'ki might like your mother and it would make sense if his brother told him to look after her. If he has been spending so much time with her, it might be the case. I think he likes a lot of your family,l more than he might admit. Though, he might look up to Ve'ki, since as you said, they are similar,"Mila smiled.

"I guess we'll see!" Beta tilted her head, looking a little puzzled as Jaromila spoke of Haides. "Isn't that obvious?" She smiled. "Haides likes others. He just doesn't say it the same way as we do. He really likes you."

Jaromila listened to what Beta said, but the last thing she told her took her by surprise. Jaromila stole a quick glance at Haides, before looking at the ground and pawing at it with one of her front hooves. Then she looked back up and her cheeks seemed to have a tinge to them.
"What...um...makes you...er....think that? He has...um...just been talking...to me...that is all,"Mila stammered. It was unusual for the young filly to stammer like this, she usually knew what to say and said it clearly.

Beta just smiled. "Because Haides is my best friend. He speaks with me the least, though, because I know what he means. I know him just as well as you know your family, because I've known him for so long. I catch his inferences and know what he wants to say without him saying it." Her smile widened. "I'm like his translator. I talk for him so he doesn't have to."
She glanced over at Haides briefly. "When I'm not around, he doesn't really talk much, even with Mama and Kalyani." Her gaze returned to Jaromila. "But with you, he talked lots. He talked to you about things he really doesn't like talking about with anyone else. Haides likes you. He likes you even more because he can trust you."

Jaromila heard Beta and she dug a deeper hole with her hoof in her nervous pawing. She didn't know what was making her so anxious about all of this, she just knew it did.
"Well, I suppose I just gave him an ear to listen to him and gave him my suggestions about things. I think he kind of needed someone to tell him what they thought, give him advice on things. I am glad he enjoyed our talk and I was able to allow him to get some things off his chest,"Mila spoke softly.

"See? You're special to him." Beta's bright smile didn't fade in the least. "You can do something for him that even I can't do." The filly nudged Jaromila lightly. "Don't act so nervous! Haides will fidget." Her gaze instinctively went to the colt, who was staring at them from where he was grazing.

Jaromila realized her being so nervous wasn't helping anyone, so she needed to calm down. She took her hoof and gently started to fill the hole in she had made.
"I guess I am not used to being special to anyone outside my family, so it is a little weird for me. I suppose I must be pretty special if there is something he can talk to me about that he has not talked to you about. I guess I have never had anyone like me so much,"Mila admitted quietly.
