Quote: I know... it's amazing. If I weren't too nice a person I would so adopt an attitude of Schadenfreude XD Ahahaha. Avenue Q = awesomeness In any case, regardless of whether swearing is a sin or not, I don't support it. Even if the Bible doesn't condem it, our society does and this seem like one case in which we should listen to society. I've said before that... I dunno. You just loose so much credibility when you swear. You sound less intelligent and I'm far less likely to listen to you. So I guess, when I'm singing along to a soundtrack, swearing won't bother me as much (provided it's not like some of those dirty rap sings which are entierly about sex and involve swearing every other word...) because they're not my words. You know? So I'm a little more comfortable with it. But outside of that, I don't swear much. I was at lunch the other day and said a very minor curse word and my friend looked and me and was like "Holy cow, I don't think I've ever heard you actually swear!" It was kinda funny I don't mind people who swear once in a while. The words don't really mean anything more to me than any other word. Butt, to me, is the same as a**. Or jerk, to me, is the same as b****. I confess I do swear sometimes, but I'm a writer geek and if I'm not just angry and swearing at nothing in particular, I use a certain word for effect. It may sound stupid if you don't know what I'm talking about, but I very much enjoy reading thesauruses and analyzing words. Some words are absolutely perfect for certain things, because of the syllables and the sounds and how you say the word determines in which context it would fit best. When you read or hear a word, it automatically has a feeling, or a picture, or various other implications to go along with it. Forgive me for either sounding like an idiot, or a nerd. (or both, frankly.) I nearly always use the word b**** in a joking manner, I may use it when I'm annoyed but not actually angry because it never fails to put a smile on my face especially when I'm talking about a guy. I use the word jerk when I'm actually angry about something mean someone did. If you understand what I mean, good. I seem to have a tendancy to lose track of my original point when I get off on a tangent. Broadway songs are not nearly as obscene as rap songs. For every obscene broadway song there is an even more obscene rap song. I'm not saying that all rap is obscene, but it when it is obscene it can be extremely so.

I'm much mroe partial to Schadenfreude, If You Were Gay, It Sucks to be Me, and The Internet is for Porn XP Haha, I like Schadenfruede the best, followed by the There is life outside your apartment and then the internet is for porn. Quote: ...I'm sure all the people who don't know Avenue Q are like WTF? Ahahaha. Oh yeah. Totally. I love There Is Life Outside Yourt Appartment too... and Everyone's a Little Bit Rascist XD

I could be talking about a female dog, for example, and that certainly wouldn't be filthy. In the context I use that word, it's like calling your friend an idiot in a joking manner and then you both laugh, no harm intended and no harm done. Certainly that's not a sin.

Watever, u guys never get wat I'm trying to imply or point out (directly or indirectly). I've tried and 4 now (like 2 days) i'll leave this issue alone, I have 2 think about other issues that are discussed in this guild (denominations, homosexuality, etc.).

Ky-Kiske101 Just a question..should we think of someone who swears, btu is also an on fire christian to be "less of a christian..." ? I'm not sure exactly what you're asking but I'll take a stab at it. I don't think we should look down on people who swear. You can be just as mean and vulgar without swearing, as you can with it. I mean, yeah we shouldn't do it, but um... admittedly I've started swearing more (I blame my theatre class... hahaha) and like... I don't think it's really affected me spiritually. Most of my swearing is very minor, and only used when there is simply not another word I can use to describe something. As long as it's not hurting someone (like used in a joking manner) I won't complain too much. But yet I still find it a sin sweatdrop It's something I need to work on... I don't think we should regard them as less of a Christian because we're all sinners. We probably sin as much as they do, but our sin may be less aparent.

Say you have an unsaved person who doesn't swear, and a devout follower of Jesus who has given Him their entire life who slips now and then- which of these two is doing the right thing?

Alright, here comes my crazily left-wing veiw: Swearing is no big deal. They're exclaimations, used to imply a very strong emotion. I think casual swearing is bad, but not sinful. Swear words are simply what society has deemed inappropriot (I totally spelled that wrong...). I think heard from my dad what we consider swear words actually are rooted in old english and what the "proper" terms for what mean the same things are french or something. I'm not sure about any of this, I just get little bits of information from places. Maybe back in bible times what we use now in the place of swear words were terrible swear words. Then again, the bible wasn't written in english... that was a bad point, ignore it.

WELL
would u do it in front of Jesus if he was standing there and the world ended and we went to heaven or were being judge or u saw an angel would u curse in front of them NO u would never do that its wrong well there u do then.

The actual words don't matter.
The bible says "hell" and "damn" and even "a**" (referring to a donkey, in this context).
The point is the intention behind them. I could say "You boogly boogly bopper!" with the intention to hurt whoever I was shouting at, and that would be worse than saying "Oh man I just stepped in dog s***."
The meaning of the words is insignificant. Excrement is not a curseword whereas s*** is. F*** is a curse word whereas sex is not. B*** is somewhat inherent in its definition, because calling someone a dog is an insult. However you can still say it in a joking way.
I know that I call my friends idiots, and have been called an idiot by my friends plenty of times without malicious intent. Jokes don't really matter.
It's the intention. The words are just words, it's the intention behind them.

And may I draw everyone's attention back to the verses in Ephesians that I know are in this thread somewhere but I'm too lazy to find. Who are you lifting up when you swear? If you can't think of anyone, then chances are swearing is one of those things you should avoid doing.

Alright I'm going to tell you a true story to prove my point that swearing is here for a reason. I was playing frisbee with my freind, just passing it at teh park. He threw it over my head and I chased it right into a picnic table. It hit my in the middle of my thighs. Now, I said f**k before collapsing. Saying "darn" just couldn't have summed up what I wanted to say. Swear words exist for a reason. To express emotion.

I mean, are you lifting up people when you sleep?
