Clerise's moment rejoining the ranks as a Hunter, however, was short-lived. The portal itself, just mere moments away, was flickering wildly in the blast of wind and water. There was no second or third moment of hesitation to consider, as the trainees wildly, blindly swam, floated, kicked and struggled to simply survive with the thin sliver of glowing blue as their goal, everything seemed in vain. It was just too white, too cold, too loud as their vision threatened to give entirely to pure white. Was that their hand raised - was that the portal or simply more snow, unrelenting as the water, snow, ice, snow, ice, snow-
- Somehow they made it in their blind struggle. Somehow, they found themselves coughing and wheezing on the sunlit grassy training fields.
"I'm telling you, there is nothing wrong with my scanner setup, its those lousy people down at Life Techs, the keep on replacing my stuff with their cra-" And then Mark noticed the trainees floundering like half-frozen fish on the grass, opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again. "I think um, we caught some live ones. Get it? Live trainees, haha!"
Apparently Caelius didn't think it was funny.

That last stretch to safety lasted for what seemed like an eternity. Honestly through the slipping, swimming and staggering he thought he'd never make it. Things became whiter and louder, and his limbs number to the point that he felt he was no longer moving.
But then he was somewhere else.
Apparently in his blind treck he'd found the portal, and now he lay face down on the warm grass of the training field. It was warm here, but it felt like it was searing hot as his frozen, practically frost bitten extremities saw sunlight.
He didn't dare move a muscle.

Clerise merely coughed up another dribble of water, having gone through the portal and collapsed on her belly.
"BARELY," is all she wheezed, groaning in pain.
Now that the adrenaline had worn off, her lungs hurt. Her EVERYTHING hurt.
{[ But... we are alive. ]}
Clerise just sighed happily, a big, dopey grin on her face. "Dude. We are."

It was like walking into a furnace.
A warm, lush furnace.
His body shook, as if not understanding the complete envelopment of island sun, the ice caked everywhere cracking reluctantly. He fell to his knees, trembling and unwrapping himself from the soaked and bitter-cold layers of ******** squid," he said, muffled underneath his scarf. He tugged that off too and added it to the sopping pile.

Everyone was running. Everyone. Clerise was there too. Thank ******** she had a weapon.
There was no time to think about it. He fell through the portal and right onto the ground. He couldn't even feel the warm climate at first, just the cold aching chill of the layers of Arctic clothing. It felt like it was still leeching the life out of him. He wanted it off. And wanted it off yesterday.
Layer upon layer of jacket was ditched, even including the standard issue shirt he'd been wearing. He didn't give a damn, bare skin and sunlight was a hundred times better than that deathly cold.
Only once he was down to his shoes and denims did he shake his hair, shivering. "D..did...did everyone ******** make it out?"
He tried to rub some life back into his arms. If he never saw that place again, it'd be too ******** soon.

Unwilling to drop Balthazar for even a second, Clerise held both sickles in one arm as she shrugged out of her coat. It didn't even occur to her to desummon him-- no, after so long, she was going to keep him out and ready to use.
{[ I'll come back, ]} Balthazar said, amused at Clerise's vain struggle to get out of her coat.
"Don't care," she replied, stubborn as a mule, finally free of the sopping wet liquid. Her scarf was gone, as were the ribbons that normally held up her hair.
However.
She did realize one thing: they were supposed to bring back a sample.
"Sorry," she said to Caelius, still riding her adrenaline high of NEARLY ******** DYING. "No sample. It ran away after we harpooned it. Which was after it kept grabbing people. And then it caused a whirlpool."
She prepared herself for some scary disapproval.

People were stripping. Why were they stripping? Otto was soaked in ice cold clothes but at least they were layers. Then again the sun was out. Maybe his shuddering would simmer if he got out of at least some of his wet things.
"More'r less.." He answered Rep, sitting up and stripping off the coats and scarf. He got a good look at his hands, feet and legs, both beet red. Not because they were warm. The ice and freezing water had really taken a number on him. Meanwhile he kept an ear out for the conversation between Clerise and Caelius. He was kind of afraid of what might become of them all. It would sure suck to die anyway after escaping death.
....He'd best not mention he lost the scanner until later...

"I think.." Cass coughed, "the only one of us to not have a full-out drowning scare..." she wheezed, still trying to catch her breath as she wrung her fingers together to try and get the feeling back into them, "Was Harrison."
Because he hadn't been Tentacled NOR had he been under water forever like Clerise had been.

What was odder still was the fact that both the Death division lead and assistant gave Clerise a look as if to say is she stupid or just dense? Only one of them was actually slightly intimidating.
"I will send in another team to recover the equipment later, you are dismissed trainees." That was it. No please, thank yous or even appreciation for a job well done, or at least for going through hell frozen over and back. And yet, this was the grim reality of who they were: Hunters that would survive, overcome all odds and live to fight another day-
- Or die trying.
As Caelius stalked off Mark shuffled around awkwardly. "Um, not to be a bother but, you're kinda dripping on my sensitive equipment ... 'n stuff."
Some people were just that ungrateful.OOC -The next day, a new coat would be sent to Clerise's door along with a small, modest bill totalling $285.50 for the cost of equipment repairs. Congrats Clerise, you are now an Intermediate Trainee! - Also all OTHER hunters recieve +2 rp points for participating in this mission and another +1 if their posts went over 800 words
