Andarien reached for a fork immediately. It was something with which he was familiar.
"Care to take a moment to give lessons on chopsticks?" Earendil asked Lin and Kara, reaching for the set in front of his plate. "I have to admit, I've always been curious."

Miyuki looked over at Andarien and nudged him, "At least give the chopsticks at try."
She loved her little brother, and it was because of that she wasn't letting him take the easy way out. Miyuki knew that Andarien would take the path easiest to him, which was okay, but other times not so much.
Kara smiled as she let Lin do the teaching, as she was sitting closer and it allowed Lin to lean in a bit.
"Hold the first chopstick between these fingers like this," she showed him, "This allows you to keep it stable, and then you hold the top chopstick like this, it allows you to move it up and down to grab things."

Andarien looked at the chopsticks. They were something he hadn't seen yet, and he was a bit wary of them.
"What are they for?" he asked Miyuki suspiciously.
Earendil did as Lin showed him, watching her carefully and copying her every move. Thanks to his long, nimble fingers, he was able to do it fairly well - that is, he wasn't dropping things.
"I guess practice will make it better," he chuckled as he awkwardly picked up a dumpling.

Miyuki picked up her chopsticks and nimbly picked up a dumpling from one of the plates. Taking a bit from it, she savoured it before swallowing, she missed dumplings and things like that. Even though by now she was use to eating a whole variety of foods thanks to all the traveling they did.
"You use them to eat," she explained.
"It does take quite a bit of getting use to, but at least you can grab things, most people can't on their first go," Donovan commented.

Andarien stared at Miyuki in awe. "How did you do that?" he exclaimed when she'd finished. "You picked up food with sticks!"
Earendil smiled and looked at his food, then looked at Donovan. "Thanks. It's not as awkward as I thought it would be."
He put the dumpling to his mouth, but just before he got it in, it dropped to his plate.
He chuckled. "Yes ... this is going to take some getting used to." He was determined, though.

Miyuki put down her chopsticks and showed Andarien piece by piece how she held them and how she used them.
"And then all I need to do is pick up food, I mean, it takes practice, but once you get it, its easy," she told him.
"At least we're not having anything round or noodles in soup," Lin murmured to him with a smile.
Though she was happen to at least have noodles, but they were stir fried and so not as hard to pick up, at least to her.

Andarien tried to copy Miyuki's movements with the chopsticks, but he wasn't having any luck. He couldn't even get the sticks to face the same direction, let alone pick anything up. He couldn't even get close to that.
"They don't work," he told Miyuki flatly. "Maybe a different pair?"

Miyuki set down her chopsticks, "They only have one type of chopsticks here."
She picked up Andarien's and helped him form his fingers around them instead to at least get him started.
"Like this."

Andarien let Miyuki help him, but even then the chopsticks slid past each other, making an X instead of tapping just the tips of them together, the way he was supposed to.
"Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii," he whined. "It's not working!"

"You need to grip them," Miyuki told him, "You can't just let them fall to close, you need to move your fingers to open and close them, like your fingers are a hinge or something. It takes practice."
Honestly she didn't remember much from it, because as far as she knew, she always used chopsticks, even if she didn't use them properly at first.

Andarien was starting to get frustrated with the chopsticks.
"I'm trying, but it's not working!" he told her, trying to be patient but failing.
He tried using two hands on the chopsticks, taking one in each hand, but he didn't have much more success that way.

Miyuki sighed and moved to make him hold it in one hand, "If you can't do it the usual way, then at least hold it with one hand, you know the idea is to use them to grab the food, so it doesn't have to be perfect, if all else fails you can stab the food instead of pick it up. Though you'll need a fork for the noodles."
Since using both hands would make trying to use them worse not better.

"Or I could use a fork for everything," Andarien grumbled, transferring both chopsticks to his right hand. "That would be a lot easier, too."
Still, he gave it another try, though he was beginning to be in a very bad mood because of these stupid chopsticks.

Miyuki frowned slightly, because she knew that look. Even though she understood her little brother had a hard time with stuff, sometimes it felt to her that he got upset too easily when things didn't go his way.
"Then use a fork, you're getting grumpy. Maybe you can try when you don't actually want to eat something."
Since she figured he was more grumpy because he wanted to eat than anything else.

Andarien was all too happy to put the chopsticks aside and pick up his fork so that he could eat.
After dinner, it was a matter of relaxing and winding down before bed, and after a good night's sleep, morning came.
When the morning's first light came into the window, Andarien was already awake and playing with his blocks, building the sturdiest tower he could with what he had. His door was wide open, and he was really waiting for the rest of his family to emerge from their rooms.
