[[ ENTER from Knight's Quarters. ]]

A Girl in Boy’s Clothing
Please, just don't play with me
My paper heart will bleed
This wait for destiny won't do,

Anwen stepped into the kitchens and noted the looks of fear that she received from many of the kitchen maids that happened to see her before the others. Several began to whisper and that's when the squire knew that she was most likely being hunted down at this point. This squire was out of control and there would be no way to stop 'Andrew' now.

She walked past Ewan, completely not realizing that that was whom he was, and began to stash her bag full of loaves of bread and anything that would last a couple of days. She turned and saw Ewan and saw his expression. It broke her heart to see the flamboyant man looking so down. Her emotionless facade vanished as she set down the sack and walked over to him, reaching out with a hesitant hand, "Is there anything I could do for you before I leave?" She asked quietly, her voice breaking and she had to swallow. It was going to be difficult to force herself not to look forward to coming back and visiting the rather attractive doctor. She had no place in the palace anymore unless she decided to face up to her actions.

It took a moment to realize the armored man that entered the kitchen was actually Anwen, the woman whom he had infuriated only hours before with his impulsive seductions. He still felt numb, unsure of what to do or where to go as he imagined Finvara riding off into the forest and continuing to the territory of the Stormcloud's; never to see her again. When was the Royal wedding? How long did he have?

Realization od Anwen's flustered hurry only became evident to Ewan when the squire made eye contact. Her eyes matched those of the desperate, frightened deer that Finvara so often shot down in the forest and her question to him only hieghtened his suspicions. "Where are you going?" he asked vacantly, ignoring her own question. There was nothing she could do for him, at least nothing he deserved from her. "You're taking so much food?" It dawned on him after his inquiries that something had happened. Something so frightening that she felt it was imperitive to flee. "What is going on?" he continued, now genuinely concerned. His thoughts of Finvara haulted momentarily as he scanned the squires face for answers. There were very few things that must have made her desperate enough to run nevertheless talk to him again.

Anwen quickly looked away from his searching eyes. She was extremely upset with what she had done and knew that there were others that were even more upset. She swallowed hard before she said in a rushed voice, "A knight threatened Sir Gave about bing weak for... well, being in lvoe and so I.... I took out my sword in self-defense and he no longer has fingers on his left hand, you see." She closed her eyes for a moment as she took a shuddering breath. "Sir Gave no longer wants me as his squire and the other knights have deemed me unfit of being a squire. I am officially a fugitive."

She then heard one of the kitchen women calling for the guards and her eyes flew open and she spun, hastily grabbing the bag of supplies and turned again to the doctor, "I am staying within the forest with Eliza herself. I intend to figure out when she plans on killing Gave and preventing such an act from happening." She hissed before she wiped a stray tear from her cheek. "I... I hope to see you again, Ewan. You don't know how lucky I am to have a friend such as yourself." She took off a emerald hanging from a bronze chain and hastily threw it over his neck. "Keep this and look for me if you come to the forest." She then gave him a peck on the cheek before dashing out of the backdoors of the kitchen and away from the soldiers that were making their way into the kitchen wing of the castle.

"What do you mean you're-" Ewan started asking before Anwen placed the jeweled necklace over his head and a quick kiss on his cheek, surprising him into silence. Today had already started off horribly and he only expected it to become worse as he watched the squire flee out the back door, frighted to the core. Eliza, he thought, trying to remember where he had overheard the name before. Knights had mentioned it whenever something curious occurred in the castle, but the real meaning behind the name had been yelled to him once by the old hag from her tower one evening after she had forgotten to dump a bucket of the day's leftover soup from her perch. Ewan attributed her punctual routine to an unusual bout of elderly confusion, but when her rambling became screams as he moved further away, he couldn't help but wonder whether genuine fear for her mortality had driven her madder than normal.

Eliza is watching! She is watching all of you! She is death! She is your death!
Being intoxicated that particular night, Ewan didn't become concerned until the next morning when he woke covered in his own sick outside the stables to the old hag standing over him with a dagger. He stared at her as she did him, her face as grey as the thick smoke that vents from a fire newly extinguished, but when the blade turned and the old woman forced it's handle into Ewan's hands, all she had said was 'keep this with you, always,' before returning to her isolation. The woman was mad and superstitious, but as a child raised by an old Healer, he couldn't help but see the truth beneath her oddities. Ewan could feel the strap holding the long dagger that he always had bound to his torso along wit the tip of the holstered blade pressing gently into his lower back. Perhaps the old hag was right.

When the guards came rushing through the doorway, Ewan stepped in their path and demanded they take him to the injured man whom Anwen had taken the fingers from. "If you don't escort me soon, he will never have use of his fingers again. The squire can be found later." Many of them objected and tried to brute force their way past Ewan, but a captain entered in pursuit and ordered them to follow Ewan's instructions just as the horn signifying emergency sounded from the medical wing. He hadn't seen cruelty in Anwen the previous night so he found it difficult to believe, along with her own testimony, that any malicious act had been done. Nevertheless, a man was missing his fingers and Ewan was the doctor. Whatever final determination about Anwen would be made later after he had time to discover what all was occuring.

[ENTER FROM GARDEN FOUNTAIN]

She shrugged. "I wouldn't try to hide, or excuse me, cover up such a beautiful accent for another. I find the French language and accent to be quite charming," she said with a small smile. She began hobbling along like the village elder when suddenly, her heart was in her stomach as her feet left the ground. She was now in the young man's arms. That wasn't at all something she was expecting. Her cheeks flooded with color again and she hid them with her hands. "I swear, your sole purpose on this earth is to make my face explode," she said, laughing a bit nervously. "Did I mention charm before, because…" She sighed, wrapping one arm around his back and covering her mouth with the other. "Just…never mind."

She brightened up a bit when he mentioned singing, though, her embarrassment forgotten. I do sing, actually. Mostly only in my room or while I'm cooking. She took a slow breath before she began to sing an Irish lullaby that her mother used to always sing to her as a child, before she passed:

Over in Killarney

Many years ago,

Me Mither sang a song to me

In tones so sweet and low.

Just a simple little ditty,

In her good ould Irish way,

And l'd give the world if she could sing

That song to me this day.

"Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, hush now, don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral, that's an Irish lullaby."

Oft in dreams I wander
To that cot again,

I feel her arms a-huggin' me

As when she held me then.

And I hear her voice a -hummin'

To me as in days of yore,

When she used to rock me fast asleep

Outside the cabin door.

By the time she was finished, he had reached the kitchens. "Hey, look at that," she said softly, grinning at him. "We're still in one piece," she teased lightly. She told him the way in. "The stairs to my room are just over there in the far corner." Upstairs was a bed, a desk and a small chest for her clothes, and that was it. She let him set her down on her bed and she smiled up at him. "Thank you, Cadvan."

Cadvan listened to the song and concentrated upon it and matched his feet to the rhythm of the tune. He had always been too clumsy for his own good, but was extremely graceful when it came to his hands and a set of strings. "You have a very lovely soprano, and trust me, I have heard many voices sing that song, but none have compared to yours." He then set her down on the bed and then sat down beside her. "Perhaps I'm not trying hard enough, for you look mignon, or 'cute' in your language."

he then scooted down so that he was by her bad leg and not too close to her that she might find him becoming either annoying or perverted. She was beautiful, almost too beautiful. Keep your head, Cadvan! You've run after ladies many a time, but you haven't felt your heart beat this quickly before... He gently began to unwrap the bandages, all the while humming a French ballad before beginning to sing it quietly in his angelic tenor voice. Then he looked at the wound, and sang a little louder when he saw the arrowhead buried in her calf. He was hoping that the song would calm her nerves a little as he gently began to remove the blasted thing from her wound, but she would still be able to feel it, that he knew for a fact, but the calmer she was, the less it would hurt.

"Thank you," she said, smiling at the ground as she ran a hand through her long, red hair. The only other man that she had ever had in her room was Azen. And now that the engagement was broken, she knew he would never be up there again. It was strange how quickly his place was being filled. Trying hard enough… What did he mean by that? Was he trying to woo her? Did he find her attractive? Was he genuinely interested in her? Her heart rate quickened a bit. She then thought about his origin. He was French. Didn't her mother always say that the French were generally flirtatious anyway? "Cadvan, we've already discussed my horrible habit of blushing. I'm afraid you're mere presence is making it worse, not to mention your charming words…" she said, running another hand through her hair, a grin tugging at the corner of her lips.

As he moved down to the floor by her leg, her nervous system nearly went into breakdown mode. She could hunt animals all day, gut them, and cook them. But when it came to her own pain, it was unbearable. She took a shaky breath and laid back on the bed, one hand resting on her stomach, the other on her forehead, her eyes shut tight. She was temporarily distracted as he began to sing, lulling her into a sense of security. It was a beautiful tenor sound, but the pain cut it in half as he began to maneuver the arrow head out. The hand on her stomach moved to grip the bottom of her corset tightly, her knuckles turning white. Her eyes were still shut tightly, and a few tears managed to squeeze through her eyelids. How embarrassing; she only just met him, and he was already seeing her cry. She bit her lower lip, trying to keep herself from yelling out in discomfort.

The bard finally managed to remove the arrowhead and then began to gently clean the wound with a handkerchief that he pulled from his sleeve and a small jar of pain-dulling ointment from his pocket. It would nullify the pain for a short amount of time, but she would need t continue to use the salve if she wanted it to be less painful. It would heal within a couple of weeks, given the first week would be painful, but she would be able to walk without having the blasted arrowhead digging further and further into her leg. He re-wrapped the wound after applying a little more of the ointment, gently kissed the bandages, and sat back up on the bed.

He took another handkerchief, one from his other sleeve, and wiped his hands clean of the blood and chuckled a little, "That wasn't too bad, was..." He stopped into a dead silence when he saw the tears running down her cheeks. He swallowed, slightly angry with himself for simply assuming that since she didn't yell or make any noise that it had been painless, and leaned over to wipe the tears away. "Taisez-vous, chère amie, ce sera mieux la semaine prochaine ou deux, juste vous attendre et voir."

Finvara took a deep breath as he finally extracted the arrow from her calf. She felt a cool ointment being rubbed onto the wound and exhaled, just lying there, waiting for him to finished. The pain dulled a bit, and it did feel infinitely better now that there wasn't a sharp shard of rock poking at her muscles. She then felt a bit of pressure on the bandage and realized he had kissed it. Her face flushed red again. What was happening? The men in this town…! She didn't know how to take it. She didn't want to be abandoned again, like she was with Azen, and although Ewan apparently had feelings for her at one time, he now avoided her completely. Guard your heart, Finn. No matter how fast it's beating…

He began to speak again, and she opened her eyes when he paused, seeing that he was standing now, obviously noticing her tears. She was going to sit up and wipe them away, but he beat her to it. She swallowed hard as he leaned over her, wiping her tears away. She held her breath, their eyes meeting as he spoke to her in his native tongue. She knew a little French, but not enough for form complicated sentences. She heard the words 'hush,' 'friend,' 'week,' and she assumed he meant to tell her that it would be better within that time frame. "Merci…" she whispered.

Cadvan then gave her a comforting smile, "Don't get me started on thank yous." He chuckled a little before he took off the sack in which he hadn't removed and had completely forgotten about. Sitting on the floor, crossing his long legs like a child, he began to rummage through the sack. "I should be the one thanking you for singing for me, so we are even. Good music is hard to come by these days... especially as the times are moving closer and closer to science than tradition." His voice held sadness and anger, but his face was calm.

Taking out his fiddle, he set it on the floor before continuing to look for his pipe, which he had most likely forgotten at the last tavern that he'd stopped in. Sighing, he simply lean back on his hands and looked up at her with melt-your-heart brown eyes. "Why do you look glum, mon cherie?"

He smiled down at her and stood back up, taking off the bag around his shoulders before sitting on the floor in front of her again. She sat up slowly, pulling her good leg up on the bed, tucking it under her other thigh. The skirts of her green dress grazed the floor again. "You never have to thank me for singing, Cadvan. I love music. I believe it's better than any of the medicine in the Medical Wing. But that's only my opinion," she said with a small smile. She pulled her red hair to one side, habitually fiddling with her curls as he rummaged through his bag.

She was staring at the floor in thought when he pulled her back to reality. "Hm? Oh…" She sighed and laughed a bit, trying to make light of it. "Oh, it's nothing… I was engaged for about a week, and, uh…" Ugh, this was humiliating! Why did she feel like she should tell him what had happened? He was much too inviting for his own good. "…well, he broke the engagement today. Traveled back to his homeland." She shrugged. "Just as well, I suppose. We knew each other a day before he proposed. He was nothing but a giant mystery to me. Still can't help but feel a little disappointed, though, you know?" she asked, her eyes looking back at his. And it was true, they melted her heart. "It's only natural to want to be loved…"

Cadvan listened to her words as he took the fiddle from the floor and began to tune it. Then he stopped when he heard that she had been proposed to already. That's not too surprising, for she truly is a beauty in both personality and features... He thought to himself, though he didn't want to think those thoughts. He was a traveler and his heart belonged to the road and music. He couldn't be distracted from his destiny of music, but... she was too alluring for her own good. She was like a siren, calling out to him to record her song within his own verses.

"I am sorry to hear that you were broken up with... love takes time to truly flourish." His eyes shut and his voice had become distant as she struck the first chord to a love ballad before stopping yet again, frowning slightly. He loved to play and she loved music, too, but would it be too abrupt to play a song that required both male and female counterparts in order to sound worthy of the ears? "No matter what the old love songs and stories say, I believe that love must be nurtured, like a child, almost. Falling in love and being proposed to within a day sounds rather remarkable, but you know where rashness leads now, do you not?"

He then began to play a tune on the fiddle.

Finvara wrapped her arms around her middle and looked away, focusing on a bird that sat perched on her window sill. He was a true musician, it was obvious. Just one note, and he tuned out anything else happening around him. She sighed. She knew love took time. She was foolish to have ever accepted. She must sound completely insane to him, boy crazy. That just simply wasn't the case, though he was entitled to think whatever he wanted about her. She scooted back on her bed so that she could lean against the wall it was against, and pulled her knees to her. Her arms still hugging her middle, she took to staring at her knees instead, hiding the man from view.

"I know it takes time…" she said softly. "Clearly, it was a mistake on my part." She leaned her head back against the wall as he began to play. She was trying not to get upset about it. Because, really, it never would have worked anyway. "Evidently, it leads to loneliness. Yeah, I got that…" she muttered. She didn't miss Azen per say. She missed having a counterpart. Ewan pulled himself from her life as well, and that was the only extent of her friends, other than her kitchen staff.

The song he began to play instantly had her choked up. It was sad. Intensely so. But it was beautiful, too. Flawless. She swallowed hard, holding back the tears that itched at her eyes. You're being ridiculous, Finn. Suck it up. She took a breath and tucked a red curl behind her ear as she looked back out of the window.

Cadvan finished the song, holding the last note a little longer than it was usually held before he set the fiddle down and looked up at her. He hated to see her this sad and understood of her loneliness. He had chosen the life of the road, and a lonely road at that. He stood and walked over to the bed, sitting down beside her carefully, as to not disturb the wounded leg, and wrapped an arm around her shoulders in hopes of being thought of as comforting. "But love has an odd way of coming and going, testing us to see if we're ready to endure its hardships."

He smiled sadly, staring into the fireplace, and it illuminated his face to make it look haunted and sorrowful. "I had once been in love, too, if you can believe this clumsy bard could ever attract the eyes of a woman." He leaned his head back against the wall, continuing the stare down with the fire. "She had been an extraordinary woman, a beauty... her voice was like that of an angel, starting in hello and ending in goodbye." He swallowed as to not allow his own tears to spill on this very night. "I had been living in their hold for the winter, for traveling during the winter is considered madness amongst other travelers, and I would play for the noble family every night after dinner had been cleared away from the table. I sang songs of love, hate, and any other emotion that you could name, except for love. I never knew what love was and I do not sing with emotions that I have never felt before."

"You see, she was engaged to a duke with plenty of money and land to spare, but yet... she asked me one evening to play a love song, a love ballad... a ballad of finding and losing love and life.... For a bride to be, that's an odd request, but I played for her every tune that I had ever heard of with those themes. That's when I looked up to find that there was warmth in her eyes, a strange sort of warmth that I had only believed I could find within my music. That was when I, too, fell into love's trap. We began to see each other in the late hours of the night, planning our escape, planning to forget our differences in rank and be married and happy. Then, on the last day I was to stay there... the duke came to claim her early and so they were married that very evening, and I was to play at their wedding and their reception. I played songs of finding and losing love and life, songs that were meant to be sung to a lover, but only my voice sung these songs. She had loved me for season and had fallen in love with the duke's promises of riches."

He then fell silent for a moment before smiling a little, but it held no happiness or warmth, "Since then, I do have not played a love song and nor do I intend to for a very long time. Love tested me that winter and I fell hard and fast for its beauty, for its beautiful songs... but I failed to prove myself worthy of it and so I will wander until I find my heart trapped yet again within the songs of finding and losing love and life."

Finvara looked up, coming out of her daze as he finished the song and stood, walking over to the bed. She moved over a bit to allow him some room. She allowed him to wrap his arm around her shoulders, and leaned her head against the wall while watching him. His eyes were trained on her fireplace as he told her his sad story. Her heart broke for him. She realized that she herself had never really been in love. Her engagement just seemed to be convenient at the time. Like she said, it was a mistake. She let silence settle over the room for a little while before she spoke again, the two of them sitting close together, his arm wrapped around her, both sets of eyes focused now on the fire.

"I pray that one day you sing a song of finding and keeping love," she said quietly, the flames dancing across her blue hues. "I pray that we both do…" She skipped a beat or two before looking over at him.

"It's fall now, you know," she said, fiddling with her curls again. "You should stay here until Spring. I can feed and house you, with no problem." She nudged him a bit with her elbow. "We can sing together. I need a friend, and I think you do, too," she said with a smile before leaning in and kissing him on the cheek. "What do you say, hmm?"
