OOC: I don't mind, but just don't go an entire page without me. XD
~~~~~~
Des watched the battle briefly, watching the Torkoal use Smog before it met a Super Fang to the face.
"Like Chael said, Poison-type moves are no good against Steel-type, so don't bother trying to use Smog or any other Poison-type attacks against the gym. It doesn't look like you have Fire Spin just yet, so you can't stop a physical attacker like that Rattata in its tracks and then whittle it down with Ember while it takes secondary damage." said Des, offering more advice.
It looked like this would probably go to Chael's rat, but considering the level differences (yes, he was checking), if they were at the same level it would have been a little more interesting. There was no point in calling back the Fire-type, as Chael revealed having Pursuit on the little rat. Heh, don't show one of your aces so early in the game, boy.
Nolan's best bet would probably be to deal as much damage as he could against the mouse and hopefully weaken it enough to force Chael to switch before it could KO the turtle. Otherwise the Rattata would get another Super Fang off and further reduce Nolan's chances of winning.
"Chael, you're going to need to fight the gym pretty soon, before all your Pokemon stop obeying you." he reminded the other Trainer.
At first Nolan was confused about why Smog wouldn't work with Steel types, and Des cast light on that conundrum, informing Nolan that Poison moves didn't work at all. That was more for Nolan to remember, and so he cast that one in stone, determined not to make a fool out of himself in the gym. Made one wonder how Nolan got through the schooling at all and earned his Trainer Card. He just hadn't much experience or really started to learn the small details.
Yet, for that fact, he didn't appear to be worried at all when Torkoal took a hard hit with that Fang attack, causing the fire turtle to stagger backwards. Nolan was focused more on learning how his pokemon battled, and not on winning the match. He wasn't worried about tactics, only those tactics involved in battling Steel types. For that matter ...
"Torkoal, return. Aron, you're up next."
Maybe Nolan was even throwing the match, if that at all mattered to him one bit.
Suddenly Chael had seen it. This wasnt good. He checked his Pokedex and saw his Pokemon's levels. "Oh boy." he said "I am one level from not having a badge to command Fear. Mind if I just rush and challenge the gym then come back?" Go figures. Of course Chael's Pokemon would get too strong. In fact Argos had a bit more swagger to the way he walked. Returning all but Fear, he said "It'll be quick and I don't want them overleveled. Then getting a badge would get a lot more complecated."
Nolan looked up for his pokedex again, mid-way through checking the moves on Aron, and he was a tad irritated that Chael was beating a hasty retreat. But that blank stare turned into an understanding nod and a small grim smile.
"Oh, sorry. I haven't been keeping up with the levels of your pokemon, so I didn't know they were getting too high. Um, good luck. I might swing by to see how you're doing, but I think I should really focus on training my Torkoal so we're ready. I hope you win."
It was rather lamely said, but Nolan really meant it. He wanted Chael to win his second badge, although, this did mean that Nolan was just with 'Lukas' the Ranger now. Was that a problem? Well, Dosu was dozing in the sun, and everyone else nearby was using the sea serpent as shade. All this heat was wearing out all the pokemon not accustomed to all the dryness.
Glancing sheepishly over at Des, kind of worried what he would be the response, Nolan asked his question anyway.
"I don't suppose you'd go for a training match for my new pokemon? I think I just need to get Torkoal to learn Flamethrower and I should be fine with the rest."
He felt kinda bad, but Chael really didn't want his Pokemin to start disrespecting him. Then he'd have to train another team just to get the badge. Which would take a lot more time. Of course last time he went to a gym his group ditched him. Here's hoping it didn't happen again.
"I'll be back in a bit." Chael said, walking to the center and then to the gym.
Chael realized his mistake and ran off, leaving him alone with Nolan. And now Nolan was asking if he would help him raising his Torkoal up enough to learn Flamethrower.
"That's at least ten or so levels away. You'd need a couple of practice matches to get up there, and by that point most of your regular team will already be past the 30 mark. Let's head to town first so you can heal up the Torkoal and so I can switch out some Pokemon to make it a little more fair. That okay with you?" Des suggested.
Nodding belatedly, Nolan managed to remember some kind of reply was expected of him, but it was just odd watching 'Lukas' now. He seemed to be a totally different guy from when they first met. So different it was throwing the teenager off. Nolan would even go so far to say that Des was normal, not that it was a bad thing. After that initial nail-biting moment after he had asked for a battle, and adding in all the already helpful advice being doled out, any doubt left in Nolan's mind about the Ranger being insane was gone. Little did he really know.
"That's fine. We can come back here."
Hurrying to the pokecenter, Nolan switched out his pokemon again, getting the real team he would use to battle the gym leader with. Neither did he want to embarrass himself here battling with who he had already accepted as hopefully his mentor. Although, it hadn't been made official, Nolan wanted to show what he could do now with his pokemon better accustomed to him and he to they.
Heading back to the outskirts in case fighting wasn't allowed in the Fort, Nolan was pretty sure he already had his first choice - well, Torkoal, of course. And the little turtle was at his side, the rest of his pokemon safely and quietly away in their pokeballs.
The switch was made. While he was at the PC, he made sure that Nolan wasn't looking before he swallowed the anti-psychotics and painkillers he was supposed to take earlier that day if it weren't for the alcohol from the previous night. The burns were really acting up, especially out here in the desert, and the pain and the presence of Psychic-Pokemon around was not helping his sanity in the slightest.
Skulltula would sit out for now in the box.
He found Nolan again where they agreed to meet up, his Torkoal already out of his ball. Des plucked the Numel's ball from within his Ranger coat and released the Pokemon. "Vulcan, it's time for you to learn how to cooperate with the rest of the team. I trust you'll work with us here to achieve our goal?" Des said, sliding a hand in his pocket to look at the Numel.
It was a little slow, but the Numb Pokemon nodded. "Excellent. Nolan, whenever you're ready."
So a Fire pokemon against a Fire pokemon? Nolan didn't feel very confident about that one. It's not a match up he would have made consciously, but could he switch? This was supposed to toughen up Torkoal or was it supposed to toughen him up? But didn't Des just barely catch that Numel? Not to mention, the only move that would do any good was Smog, and that wasn't even starting on the fact that Nolan didn't know it wasn't very effective against Ground types. Which Numel also was. Oh well.
"Um ..."
Nolan hesitated.
"Withdraw?"
And he kind of wanted to see if Torkoal could hide all the way in his shell. Sure enough, the Coal Pokemon could, and he tucked his arms, legs, tail, and head into his shell, peeking out at Numel. It was a lame start, but watching for the Ranger's opening move would tell him a lot of what Des intended.
Nolan started with Withdraw. Des smirked. "Not bad. Torkoal can't make use of Curse that well because it doesn't know any physical attacks this early and since both our Pokemon are slow, Speed isn't much of an issue. Going with Withdraw was a good choice." he mused.
The Numel tilted her head as she walked over towards the Torkoal and peered inside the shell. Where did Torkoal go? She wanted to say hello to her fellow Fire-type.
"Nuuuu." the Numel said to the shell.
"Vulcan, Focus Energy." said Des.
And then the Numel concentrated. She concentrated so hard her derpy little face had become serious. Now she had a better chance of pulling off Critical Hits, and with her Simple Ability, her chances had doubled.
(( I'm not going to worry about rolling because there's almost no way that Torkoal can actually win this battle the way things stand. ))
Glancing down at his feet, Nolan scratched the back of his head, a bit embarrassed. He hadn't been thinking about tactics at all. He just wanted to see Torkoal use his Withdraw move, but he got praise all the same. If it was about tactics, Nolan would have switched out his pokemon.
However, this was ridiculous with Torkoal and Numel. Neither must have gotten the memo that they were supposed to be bitter rivals in this battle. The turtle poked his head out a little and blew some white steam from the top of his shell, crying out,
"Tooor."
Oh well. Nolan only knew what move was open to him while he considered if a switch was a good idea or not, but which one? He didn't want to use his trump card so soon, or to play Ninjask incorrectly. And Nolan didn't want to only rely on Dosu for sheer power. So, he'd stick with the turtle to train him.
"Okay, use your Smog attack, Torkoal."
Much like before, with the first fight with Fear, the turtle snorted and the white smoke turned into an acrid greenish color, billowing through the immediate area with poisonous smoke, dribbling from the top of his shell like a mini-volcano.
Nolan finally attacked, using Smog. Considering the boy's options, it was either that or Ember, and at least Smog had a better chance of having something happening. "Poison-type moves aren't very effective against Ground-types, though props for wanting to try to Poison Vulcan with Smog rather than using Ember to try to Burn her. It's definitely the better of the two attacks in this situation." said Des. "Depending on the gas, you might be able to cause an explosion if you light it. I think it depends on the Pokemon, like Koffing or Grimer that have high levels of flammable toxins in their gas, though Torkoal might be able to pull if off."
The Numel breathed in the gas and took damage, but thankfully wasn't poisoned. Des then sighed before speaking, already bracing himself.
"Vulcan, use Magnitude."
That move pretty much sealed the deal with the battle. Even if the Torkoal endured the hit, it wouldn't be able to take a second tremor.
Well, there went Torkoal. The quake sunk the turtle into the soft sand of the desert, rumbling, and nearly burying the hapless slow-poke. Torkoal struggled in vain and would have been buried alive if it wasn't for Nolan recalling him. Well, the Ranger wasn't pulling any punches, and that seemed better to find out than if Des was taking it easy on Nolan. So what did he learn? Nolan was already reaching for the next pokeball after Torkoal was rendered unable to battle.
A burn ... that reduced a pokemon's attacking ability. Nolan knew that at least, but he hadn't been worrying about tactics again. Sighing this time, he finally spoke up,
"I wasn't really thinking about a burn versus poison. Aren't fire pokemon pretty much immune to burns anyway?"
So that was a ground move, and bug was bad against fire. Nolan tossed the next pokeball he had picked out, and Cocoa the Hippopotas formed out of the light. Nolan had to quickly check the moves as the Hippo stirred up the Sandstorm from the port on her back. There was more than enough sand around to whip up, and Nolan was already pulling his bandanna down over his mouth to keep the sand out.
"Hippopotas! Dig!"
He had to shout over the wailing of wind, and right on cue, the Hippo dived under the sands, easily moving through as if though just walking.
The Torkoal, sure enough, went down. After hearing Nolan's question about burning a Fire-type, he shook his head. "It depends on the attack used. Will-o-Wisp will still burn a Fire-type Pokemon unless they have Flash Fire. Similarly, the Water-type attack Scald can leave Burns too. But you're right. Fire-types are immune to most Fire-type based burns." he explained.
Nolan sent out the Hippopotas, whipping up a Sandstorm in the process. Des reached for a pair of goggles in his bag (he was, after all, from Hoenn. And there was a desert there that he used to frequent) before putting those on. Vulcan was part Ground-type, so she would be spared from the damaging effects of the Sandstorm. Hearing Nolan use Dig caused Des to shake his head.
"While Dig is a good move to keep your Pokemon safe for a turn, it's not a good idea to use it when your opponent has already revealed that his Pokemon knows Magnitude or Earthquake. Your Pokemon takes double damage underground if it's hit with either one of those moves." Des explained. "It should be okay to use it for the Ammoa Gym Battle, assuming none of the Gym Leader's Pokemon have Levitate which makes them immune to Ground-type attacks.
With that said, he ordered Vulcan to use Magnitude again.
"Oh ..."
Well, there went Hippopotas. This was very humbling to lose two pokemon to a single Numel, but Nolan knew it wasn't over yet. He should have just gone with his gut feeling in the first place. Trying to keep his spirits up, he withdrew the Hippo after she took a critical hit, and replaced her, throwing his Repeat Ball.
Dosu formed from the light, the Gyarados understanding that this was a battle right away with the Sandstorm howling around him. The sapphire beast looked down at his tiny opponent and roared, his gaping mouth opening wide. Nolan was going to make use of that TM he bought from the Mart finally.
"Dosu, Return!"
The Gyarados slammed the sandy ground with his tail, using his Intimidate ability, and he tossed his head into the air. Undulating his serpentine body, Dous charged at in a U-turn-like move at Numel. And yup, it was a pretty good Return. Dosu really liked his trainer, and he 'returned' to Nolan's side, turning again and getting ready for the next attack, battered by the Sandstorm.
