The Cave of FIAH

Taryn half-expected the fish bowl to be full of water just beneath the boiling point, but testing it with her fingers revealed that, no, it was perfectly warm and not at all painful. She plucked the ring from the water and continued, a deep grief filling her chest. There was an immediate attachment to the damn thing, but why? It reminded her of... something else. Someone else. When she reached the volcano, her anger and her depression meant no hesitation to pitch the damned thing into the fire, and that was the end of it. She took up the last two flags and began the trek back to the starting point, head hung.

"Did you know that I am very proud of you?"

The ghoul just sighed, pushing a lock of hair that didn't exist behind her ear.

Alex had reformed back in the infirmary with a gasp of air that he didn't need. His whole body was shaking, the bones of his leg rattling as the events that led to his dissipation replayed in his mind. His body..it was almost like it was going into shock. First frozen, then broken, then dissipated? It was not happy with him. He squeezed his eyes shut, feeling rather dizzy and a little bit faint. A voice beside him whispered.

"Did you know that you did better then I expected?"

Well, that made him feel a tiny bit better he supposed.

But then sudden sounds at the tents entrance had him opening his eyes, pushing his still faintly trembling self up from his bed to see what was going on. Boogeymen were bringing somebody in on a stretcher, and all Alex needed to see was a small flash of green and brown for his heart to drop like a stone in his chest. The smell of blood hit him hard, and unbiddingly made his mouth water. He was worn out, stressed out, and hungry, but he could ignore it.

The trembling in his body had all but stopped, his dissipation forgotten as he pushed himself from the bed and scrambled forward. He had to see for sure who it was on that stretcher. It might not be Yin. It might be somebody else....

As he got near, a boogeyman tried to blockade his path, grabbing him by the shoulders and telling him to stay back. He could catch glimpses through the bodies between him and the stretcher, though. He could see that it was Yin, and he broke the hold that the boogeyman had on him, pushing forward just as they lay the weremantis down on a bed.

The sight was..ghastly, to say the least. Yin's chest was a ruined red mess of blood and bone, so Alex forced himself not to look at it and focused instead on Yin's face. Yin's blue tinged face. Where were those heaters that they had used on Alex before? He looked around desperately and spotted one not far off, but a nurse was already grabbing it and bringing it over, plugging it in and setting the air flow to full blast before directing it towards Yin. He reached out, unable to stop himself, intent on placing a hand on the weremantis's face, but he was being pulled back, jostled away by the fear healers that wanted to get close enough to do their work.

So he just stood back, pathetically unequipped to deal with any of this. He felt completely useless, but as soon as he was able, he was back at Yin's side again, mindful this time not too touch him. He looked cold enough without Alex's help making it worse.

THE WATER LAKE

If Mort felt hollow, it was because of the holes still in his body; not all of them had retained their stitching when he followed after his team and the boogeymen for the next course. Ah well: wasn't like a few extra holes wouldn't heal themselves up. He kept quiet as they walked, pocketing his hands lest they appear fidgety. After staring so long into the tent, hear all but doing nothing, Mort had reached a sort of state of zen. Like his body no longer mattered, nor his fears, or anxiety, or feelings of failure.

It was the only way he would've volunteered to go to the water course.

How, why, what - none of these mattered. The hail pelted at his uncovered chest, but the cold felt good; the momentary stings were worth it. He did pop the hood up just so that he wouldn't get disoriented before hitting the course, but otherwise Mort was the fleshy glacier who would not be stopped as he walked towards the last place he would normally ever be: a lake.

The fog licked at the edges of the water, and Mort could barely see where he placed his feet. A small knot of nervousness welled up in his chest, and in bits and pieces the old fears came back. Was this the right thing? Was he able to face his own fears, take a literal leap of faith, and come out on top?

There was only one way to find out, his conscience reasoned.

His shoes nearly snagged on some of the growth on the pier, staggering him to the very edge. The water lapped at the banks innocuously, pockmarked by the hail falling into it.

Can I really do this? He bit the inside of his lip, staring into those depths like it was ready to consume him.

Remember how you got your feet into the hot springs? That wasn't so bad, was it?

True. But . . .

No buts. Act first, think last! Those flags need a savior down there. So cold and alone . . .

Mort swallowed at the mental imagery. Little ghouls who needed saving, trapped in the cold and wet. He spotted a tinge of red not far into the water, and the next thing he knew he'd jumped cleanly into the water to rescue it.

Cold. Oh Jack did this feel nice . . . His tensed body relaxed after about a minute in the water. It seemed as though his brain would not shock him today, so focused was he on saving these "ghouls" from the watery depths.

The flag was snatched and placed into the safety of his arm, and Mort even smiled a bit at it as if to reassure the poor flag that everything was going to be okay. However, he'd forgotten what his task was, and looked to the crates below with their . . . what. What was he supposed to do, knit a scarf underwater?

Close enough, as it seemed. Baskets. Oh Jack. He'd done some minor knitting in that one gathering, and his First Aid classes had helped, but . . . baskets?

He fumbled his first attempt, the reeds deciding to float rather than stick together.

He was quick to retry, slowly but determinedly. Even his soon-to-be waterlogged brain could recall some of the tips he'd learned from Calder and Amrita, despite the months it had been since then. Maybe he worked best under pressure? Or under the assumption that someone was counting on him?

But someone was counting on him. His team. And now this red ghoul-flag was too. And Mort would rather die again than let ghouls down.

He engaged in mental conversation with the ghoul-flag as he wove, asking for opinions, should this go there, what about this ribbon, and such. Eventually the basket he wove was the perfect construction of his liking and, stroking the flag tenderly in thanks, he placed it within so that he could walk with both fists out. One never knew in an unknown territory after all . . .

Several doom fish were so impressed they gave him another flag for his efforts. It joined its sister in the basket as he moved onward.

It didn't take him long to find the third flag, though it came with some . . . complications. This ghoul-flag was apparently a princess, and several schools of fish were her captors. They eyed him angrily with those beady little eyes, and all at once began to rush forward to swarm him.

Fish bites were the strangest things. Mort didn't know they had teeth! Or that their scales were kinda hard.

But after beating back a couple with his fists, he decided the best way to get them to screw off would be a sure sign of power. In the chaos he managed to put the basket down and, in probably the worst judgment, charged his fists up. The school was soon delivered multiple shocks with each punch and, had he the air to, Mort would've been growling. How dare they keep the princess captive away from her sisters?!

Eventually the fish learned their lesson, at least those that were not immediately fried, and Mort was left alone. Twitching a bit, but . . . surprisingly not as messed up as he thought he would be. Hmm. Maybe it was the focus, the adrenaline of pure emotion . . . He would have to study this later.

For now, he plucked the flag from her seat and let her join her sisters. Some fish also were stacked into the basket, because damn it all if Mort didn't thin they deserved a treat for this.

Fish bites itched, but Mort persevered regardless. the more he thought of the ghoul-flags he was saving, the less he thought about the fact that he was completely submerged underwater, which was totally wet, with piranha-like fish, and seaweed, and gunk, and water, and -

Ghoul-flags. Just think of the ghoul-flags you're saving. And all the kisses you'd get for getting the job done and looking fearless.

Right. Kisses.

Eventually Mort found himself coming up in a niche, where several fancy-looking boxes were stacked. Was that what the basket was for? Mrrrr . . . He plucked the flags up as well as the fish into one arm and set the boxes within the basket with the other. One more delivery, that's it . . .

His walk was quiet this time around, despite him having to go a bit slower so that nothing was left behind. Eventually he managed to hit the banks, sagging wet and frigid in the snow and hail, and passed the basket on with chattering teeth. His reward was the final flag, the last sister.

It felt good. It warmed him as he collected both fish and flag into his arms and made his way out. He'd done something right, and nothing could take that away from him.

Yin might have been unconscious when they brought him in, but he was given a rude awakening when they began popping his ribs and vertebrae back into place. Fear helped of course, as did the the bar shoved into his mouth to keep him from damaging himself any more as he clamped down on it with his jaws, pain-dazed body trying to worm its way away from the touches but too weak to do anything more than writhe pathetically until they began restricting him. They bandaged him, but there was none of the soft Fear caresses to try to heal the skin and keep it from scarring like Nurse Cricket had given him.

As soon as they stopped touching him, stopped causing new pain as they healed him, his eyes closed and he began slipping into a pain-induced fog. If only he could shift into his boneless natural form but...he had no idea what that would do. If it would leave gaping holes in his thorax for his organs to leak through. It was not an option. It was cold. So very cold.

"I still think it would just be easier to dissipate him. Now that everything is in the right place he should reform correctly."

"But what about that organ? I have never seen one of those, and we do not know its purpose. It may be in the wrong place entirely! No, the best thing to do is to leave him alone to mend. The nurses can do minor Fear healing on him until he recovers."

There was weight on the bed soon after they left and he bothered to open his eyes, struggling to focus and finally seeing his zomboil sitting right there. In reach but....he simply did not have the energy to reach out at the moment. But this had happened to him. Not Alexander. At least he had saved him from this fate twice.

Well...Yin was opening his eyes. That was an improvement at least, right? He wished he didn't have to look like he was in so much pain though. Alex never really understood what that might be like. "Hey.." He said softly to the weremantis, not really sure if the other boil was even really there right at the moment, or if he was even listening. If this was some kind of payback for the stress he had put Yin through today with being put into the infirmary twice already, Alex didn't appreciate it. He felt tired and weak himself, still not fully recovered from having dissipated himself not that long ago. Reaching out, he adjusted the heaters so that Yin would get the full benefit of the blasts of hot air.

He then just continued to sit there, and fret, and wait. He'd watch the fear healers as they came and went, as they checked on Yin repeatedly to see how he was mending. He even added his own basic healing knowledge into the mix when nobody was watching. Eventually, when he felt it was safe and nobody was paying any attention, he'd reach out to close his hand around Yin's, still ignoring the scent of blood and injury that wafted in the air.

"I'm so glad this jacking trial is over." He muttered, miserably.

Somehow, for some reason, Chuppi decided to pick the ice roads. She'd been in a field, she'd been in a jungle, so the thought of going on a road didn't seem so bad to her. There was a chance she could do good things out here, or at the very least she could shrug off the hail that was pounding against her flesh, and she started down the road towards a cave in the distance.

A good night's sleep on the floor of the infirmary had given her some of her spirit back though just how much remained to be seen. None the less she was determined to make everyone proud of her in one way or another.

Ice Road Runner

Chuppi was moving around, dodging snow as best she could, when she decided it was time to shift into her natural form. She always had better luck that way, even if she was a larger target, and as soon as she shifted she narrowly dodged what looked to be a large chunk of ice.

Dodging it of course nearly knocked her off her feet and she stepped on something sharp and pointy, not enjoying that feeling. She needed to get a flag, a single flag at the very least! They were counting on her!

Maybe a monster wasn't really situated to be out in the snow - or at least not a monster like Chuppi. Already limping from the ice shard against her foot she stumbled over a few things here and there and generally did her best to keep her footing. That all came crashing down though the moment a snowball came and smacked her square in the face, resulting in her staggering into the hail again.

She was getting tired really, really quickly and so far nothing good had happened. She was going to let everyone down again, wasn't she?

The wind was harsh and biting as Chuppi continued on through the cave and she shivered as she felt herself grow weaker and weaker with each step. Maybe it would have been best if she'd just stuck to the field? No no, now was not the time to second guess herself! Instead she just pressed onward, pushing up against a large wall of ice. It kept some of the wind off but the hail still stung at her shoulders.

How much longer could she last? How many times would she have to say she was sorry?
