...||One King, Two King, Red King, Blue King Jin Huang had not been to the Pantheon in what seemed like a literal Age, and the changes that he found from just nearing the grounds were immense. True, the wear on the world had ended when his Lord had been reborn, and much else had recovered in the intervening time, but this...This was more than something time could account for. While a certain amount of shock was present within the dragon, overwhelmingly, all he felt was wonder. Was there balance within the Crown, or had He simply been tilted back towards Creation?
And how would he react to Futs Lung's late arrival and non-appearance at the Ceremony? It was that thought, more than anything, that had kept Jin Huang from returning. The bone-deep shame of even thinking of of failing the Crown was enough to send him shakily to rest in one of the teahouses that seemingly had grown with the trees and other plantlife. He would...just rest here, a moment. Regain his composure, and then perhaps continue on. Zhijian was greatly enjoying the change in environment - grass and trees and water were much more appealing than ash and lava. Not that he would have complained, but this was definitely an improvement. He was also enjoying his change in form. While he hadn't been particularly bothered by things like being female, as he'd had much more important things to worry about, it was wonderful to really be himself again. He was still quite feline, but he didn't mind that in the least; he had no wish to be as human in form as Tian Yue.
As the dragoncat neared one of the teahouses, he caught a scent that was distinctly dragon, but not as familiar as Tien Lung's, or the hosts of Yu or Chien-Tang. With a burst of excitement, he rushed towards it. Not so sunk in despair that he could not recognize the sound of someone nearing, Jin Huang's head came up sharply. There was something almost familiar about whomever it was, but old habits died hard, and it was best to be certain, even now. "Who approaches?" he called out somewhat harshly, with a brief pang of regret that his host was no longer there to hide behind, if he so desired. But it was, perhaps, better this way; learning to take the world on his terms alone, and not with a mortal crutch.
A more immediate source of regret was that he had left his sword at home...Zhijian could have answered. He even thought about it. He just decided not to, because pouncing on his siblings was much more fun, provided it wasn't an inappropriate course of action for the situation...of course, his target may or may not have agreed about the appropriateness of tackling someone in any situation. But he hadn't seen any of his brothers in awhile, Tian Yue in particular, and certain playful tendencies hadn't had any outlet recently.
And so, as soon as he was in a position to do so, he flung himself at his unfortunate brother - he wasn't even sure which one it was at this point, but that hardly mattered! A brother was a brother!Half risen from the bench he was seated on, Jin Huang had only a small warning before the large furred mass impacted him. "Zhijian!" he cried out, half in annoyance, half in joyous welcome. Of all those to meet again, only the Twin Crown ranked higher than his brothers. "Would you...This is hardly dignified," the dragon groused, only the half twitch of the very end of his tail betraying his amusement. Ying Long had certainly gotten...larger since the last time they'd seen each other.
Then again, had not he himself changed? It was hardly fair to think of others as unchanging, although there was a niggling voice that whispered that he could be more himself, if only...But those thoughts were banished quickly, along with his other worries, in the sheer happiness that came from being in the company of another of the Kings.Dignified? Dignity was all well and good, but when it came to his siblings, Zhijian didn't usually bother with that sort of thing. He was more than happy to jump on them, chew on them, or any other such thing. They were brothers, after all.
He wriggled happily on top of his fellow dragon for several moments, inspecting and sniffing busily. "Jin Huang!" Yes, this was certainly Futs Lung. The obvious observation made, the Fangbridle let his brother up - if only to curl around him, still stubbornly cat-like in many ways.Jin Huang endured the sniffing and wriggling dragon, allowing his brother familiarity only another King would enjoy. It was with relief, however, that he was finally allowed to stand up, quickly brushing his clothes off, only to find his hand resting gently on the Fangbridle's head. "I see you have not changed in some ways," he commented dryly, tail wriggling loosely even as it remained gently trapped by Zhijian's body.
"But you certainly have in others," he continued, casting an admiring glance over his brother's changed form. "It seems we are not the only ones to do so." A waved hand - not the one on Zhijian's head, oh no - clearly indicated the refigured Pantheon...As well as the one who had caused such alteration."There have been many changes for the better," Zhijian agreed with a purr, twining his furred tail with his brother's scaled one. "And hopefully there will be more still." Personally, he was looking forward to the restoration of the sky, and of everything else that had been lost with the death of Universe.
"I trust you've been well?"Jin Huang's tail stayed still, except for the very tip, as his brother's wound with his. "Yes," he agreed softly, casting a wistful glance upwards before looking once more at Zhijian.
"As well as can be expected," the dragon answered with a shrug. His wounds were all healed at this point and hardly pained him at all. "Attempting to sort out things amongst those survivors who found me," he continued after a moment. "And yourself? How fare things for you?""I am well," he replied with a nod. "I have my fair share of mortals, as well, though most are of the four-legged variety. And, thankfully, not all packed into my rooms, now that the outside world is safer."
Things had been getting a little crowded for Zhijian's tastes. While he was all for close contact with his siblings, he didn't particularly like being sandwiched between a bunch of equines and giant cats...not to mention Ashoka's nightmarish pair of children."That seems fitting, brother-mine," he said with a grin and playful tug on of one of Zhijian's ears. Indeed, the other dragon still appeared more cat-like than man, though Jin Huang found nothing strange in this. He was, simply, a Dragon King, and that was all that mattered. All that had ever mattered.
"And while I may have more of the two-legged variety of mortal about, I find I owe you thanks for the services of Huore," he continued, somewhat more seriously. "He was a great aid during my journey, and has continued to be of great help." Of course, the Errais could no longer world-walk, but having an intelligent mount had proven useful, more than once.Zhijian nipped playfully at his brother, but missed intentionally. His more human-looking siblings weren't quite so...durable, and he didn't want to actually bite Jin Huang in this form. That would be mean.
"You're quite welcome," he purred. "They're delightfully useful, aren't they?" And wonderfully willing to serve. They didn't need quite the...convincing most mortals did.Jin Huang mock flinched as Zhijian's teeth snapped near him, secure in the knowledge that his brother wouldn't seriously injure him like this. It was fun to play along like this, however. It was certainly a change from the rather formal manner he'd always had, one he'd quickly readopted following his proper rebirth. "What big teeth you have," he said with a quick flash of a smile.
"Oh certainly," he agreed fervently. "Huore saved my life." If the Errais hadn't been quite so quick on his feet at that ambush, it was entirely likely Delmin would have died, instead of being wounded. The scar left behind made a lovely reminder of the dangers of getting careless."Why thank you," he returned, chuckling, before tilting his head to regard Jin Huang with great curiosity. "Did he now?" What kind of trouble had his brother been getting into, hmm?The dragon waved a hand absently before replying. "Simply that I was attacked while traveling and if not for Huore's speed in evading a sword blow, I would have suffered a far more grievous wound than the one I did." A slight grimace crossed Jin Huang's face as he rubbed absently at the scar on his left side with the hand that was not currently rubbing at his brother's ears.
"And I suppose you have not gotten into any serious trouble yourself, hm?""Me, in trouble?" Zhijian put on his very best innocent face, which was actually not very good. His appearance didn't lend itself well to such expressions. "Of course not. I certainly never broke my ankle."
Joking aside, however, he was very glad that his brother had been spared a worse injury. It would not do to lose any of his siblings again so soon.Jin Huang looked amused at Zhijian's reply and his 'butter wouldn't melt in my mouth' look - not that he wore it well. "Oh, of course not. You'd never do such things, hm?" Broke his ankle? What had he been doing?
Clearly he must spend more time at the Pantheon - he missed so much, being away!"Oh no, of course not," he continued, "I'm always perfectly cautious and aware of my surroundings when I pick fights." If he'd been speaking to anyone other than one of his siblings, he would most certainly not be discussing such things, much less in such a jovial manner."Yes, I seem to recall that as well," he replied as dryly as ever. And if the opposite was true, well, what of it? This sort of banter was what the Kings often did, amongst themselves.
That and get into fights where people broke ankles, apparently.
About to comment further on Zhijian's excellent instincts once a fight was underway, Jin Huang paused as a familiar sight stuck it's head into the tea house he and his brother were still ensconced in.
"Huore?" The Errais whickered in greeting and gave a very serious sort of nod to Zhijian.Pardon the interruption, my Lords. Something's come up at the house that requires your presence, he imparted, looking ruffled that he'd been detailed as a messenger and no doubt swift transport back. Irritation blossomed with the dragon and he was tempted to send Huore back alone. But responsibility and his no doubt overdeveloped sense of duty made Jin Huang sigh. "Well, brother? It seems as though I am needed elsewhere, much as I would enjoy staying here and talking to you."
He'd have been mounted on Huore by now, except that Zhijian was still wrapped around him.
Once his brother had let him loose, he was quickly astride Huore and with a small nod and wave to Zhijian, the pair was off.

...||Golden Claws, Wooden Paths Tian Yue wheeled through the sky in dragon-shape, his eyes slitted as he sought lights in the darkness. He was quite safe; he had never seen anything in this life as large as he was in the air, and few mortals would dare challenge a god in these days even if they weren't hundreds of feet long. But Jin Huang had not been in the Pantheon, and while Greed might well know of his location...
Well, Tian Yue wasn't that hard-up yet.
He breathed deeply as he flew, seeking light and scent; it would seem foolish to look for someone this way, but they were Dragon Kings, and that bond they shared made for better prospects. Besides, no Dragon would move far from his Lord. Especially after the trying times they had all shared.
A faint whiff, a faint thrum caught the dragon's attention; he perked up his ears and turned his flight downwards, his movements against the air more eager. "Jin Huang? Brother?" he called out, letting his roar echo against the empty sky.It was just as well that Jin Huang was outside, although it would indeed have been hard to miss the Worldshield's call. A quick glance upwards confirmed the guess, brief but sincere smile quickly overshadowed by a frown of thought. Where was his brother to land? The houses to either side of Futs Lung's had not yet fallen fully, leaving their skeletal remains to obstruct a clean landing. While he certainly could alight in the spacious backyard attached, the garden had only just been completed, and Jin Haung would prefer to leave such work undamaged. That would clearly have to be remedied, and soon. But..."Bother," the Treasurer said sourly. How to direct Tian Yue to the correct house?
With a shrug and a sigh, Jin Huang cupped his hands around his mouth. "Tian Yue!" he called in reply, half hoping and half knowing that his brother could hear him. He would land where he would land, and that was all there was to it.Tian Yue's ears stood straight up, and he wheeled in the sky swifter than it seemed something his size should be able to move - but he was a Dragon King, no mere scaled beast or flying machine. "Brother," he called again, moving carefully downward through the air until he spotted it - a home in good condition surrounded by the remains of others not so blessed.
"Ah, there you are!" he called in delight, waggling the tip of his tail slightly; the wind from the movement made the ruined houses creak alarmingly. "I should - ah." He frowned, then. "Is there anything you care about in those wrecks, any beings living there?"It was with wistful amusement that Jin Huang watched his brother orient himself correctly. Jumbled memory told him that Tien Lung's coils stretched far longer than his own ever would, an assumption that certainly seemed to be true. "No," he replied, dropping his hands down after the answer had gone out. It was easy enough for Tian Yue to speak thusly, but it was rather harder for him to hold a conversation by shouting. Much easier to speak once his brother had landed.
A quick, thoughtful glance caused Jin Huang to snap his fingers and summon a demon, issuing a few sharply whispered orders while he waited. He made a mental note to thank his brother for destroying whichever house he chose; it would save time and effort that could be better spent remodeling his own dwelling."One moment, then..." Tian Yue circled over the ruins once more, judging their construction. At last he settled for a former house that seemed to have been constructed of wood - a mere plank or beam would blunt itself against his scales and do no damage. Carefully, the Dragon King descended, stretching out to press against the debris with his claws, shoving it downward to earth with a great creaking and snapping sound. Once it was compacted sufficiently to hold his weight, he landed entirely, one errant sweep of his tail knocking the entire back of the former house down.
"Oh. I didn't mean to do that," he muttered, turning carefully and gathering the rubble into a pile. Then he glanced over his shoulder and gave Jin Huang a half-contrite, half-amused look. "Well, brother? Since I seem to be moving earth today, is there anything else I should clear away?" His ears canted forward.Jin Huang watched his brother descend impassively, not moving even when small pieces of debris scattered nearby. "Most impressive," he said when Tian Yue had finished. "You could do quite well in the construction industry," the dragon continued teasingly. "But I doubt you came here to assist with the building of my home." A slight flicker in his eyes betrayed an inner nervousness, a not-quite fear of what exactly Tian Yue's business with him was.
A demon had returned with a simple robe folder over an arm in the event it was needed, recalling Jin Huang to the matters at hand. "Ah, would you care to come inside?" he asked after a moment. It would be easier, perhaps, to talk about whatever had brought his brother out here. Tian Yue snorted, only just remembering to turn his head aside so that his breath sent leaves fluttering into the air, rather than (possibly) his brother and servants. "Only for the Kings, the Crown, or the Empress would I offer such a thing," he said, almost primly, then refocused on the servant's burden and nodded. "But no, that's not why I'm here."
The dragon hunched forward, looming overhead for a moment before transforming, massive scaled shape flowing down into something much smaller with only a moment's disorientation. Then Tian Yue stepped forward, holding out one hand to accept the offered robe; while he might be embarrassed were anyone else here, this was his brother. They all knew each other far too well - or had, once - to be embarrassed by such simple matters.
"Your hospitality is, as always, excellent. My thanks," he said, with a nod and a grin. "How have you fared? I'm surprised to find you so far from the Treasury." There was only honest curiosity in the question, no hint of accusation."And well do I appreciate the honor," Jin Huang replied, half serious and half teasing. He waited while his brother transformed into his smaller shape, smiling lopsidedly. "I'm sure your tailor loves those," he said with a wave of his hand to indicate the large spikes decorating Tian Yue's shoulders. One hand reached up, almost without thought, to rub at his own shoulder. As impressive as they were, Jin Huang privately hoped he would not be so adorned. "I enjoy my comforts, and the trappings of civilization, so my hospitality is merely an extension of what I expect for myself." A broad grin accompanied the words, to take any sting out of them.
The demon bowed and re-entered the house as soon as Tian Yue had taken the robe, and with a wave of his hand, Jin Huang indicated they should follow. "Well enough, now that things have returned to a semblance of normality," he responded, managing to keep his wince at the second comment under control. There was no trace of censure in his brother's voice, but Jin Huang had spent enough time worrying over it to feel defensive. "I...have not been to the Treasury," he admitted, something he would only tell his fellow Dragon Kings. "A complicated situation with an easy solution," he continued by way of explanation. It was easy enough for him to rationalize his decisions, but he knew it would not stand up to another's questions.
"So what does bring you to me?" he asked, any quaver of nervousness firmly quashed as Jin Huang attempted to redirect the conversation.Tian Yue ended up tying the robe's sash around his waist, using the robe as more of an impromptu kilt than anything else - not entirely regal, but he didn't want to punch holes through anyone's things. "Oh, Toki - my Aoide - doesn't mind. In fact, I think he might like it better this way. Rends and tears and re-doing my wardrobe provides him with hours of entertainment," he said, dryly. He wasn't kidding, either.
"Demon-work?" Tian Yue asked as they entered the house, peering with curiosity at the interior. Then again, after they'd stopped the end of the world, they had no end of grateful mortals practically falling all over themselves to do even the smallest tasks. Sometimes it seemed as if the least of deities couldn't so much as sneeze without multitudes rising up with handkerchiefs. "It looks well, indeed."
For now, he didn't bother asking why his brother was here, instead of closer to the Pantheon - after all, Tien Lung had slumbered through months, and while some of that time had been required for restoration... some of it had also been sheer waste as well. No matter that he hadn't consciously been aware of it. He was the least entitled to call anyone to task right now. "Yes... I know that you and Greed retrieved the Manacles from within Yggdrasil," he said, sitting in the indicated seat, his tail curling down the side and coiling idly around one leg of the chair. "I have been given a task by the Crown - to number the worlds left un-Eaten. Yggdrasil is now the sole connector of worlds, now that Universe is gone." He bowed his head for a moment. "It has been long since I walked such paths - it was never my office to do so, and only rarely did I venture there. What is it like now, brother? Can you tell me anything that might aid me in my journey?"Jin Huang made no comment about Aoide-tailors, but he could well understand the usefullness of having such a type around. Neither of his Aoide enjoyed that sort of work, but there were those among the demons who delighted in such things.
"Of a sort," he replied to the question. "Mostly physical labor, of course. Restoring and remodeling is as easily accomplished with that as with magic." They had few enough mages to spare for tasks that could be done by hand. A passing demon overheard the comment and blushed, pleased at the compliment. Jin Huang tended to be much more sparing with his praise.
Once Tian Yue started speaking - of the Manacles, and the Tree - Jin Huang settled back in his chair, gathering his thoughts. "I am not sure how useful my memories will be," he said slowly, tenting his fingers. "Phaedra and I...when we returned, time had passed for everyone but us. So while we travelled back, the Influences were at work upon Yggdrasil. I cannot say what effect this had." He flickered a quick look over at his brother's briefly bowed head. "I am sorry," he said quietly. If they had not encountered that time skip, if they had returned the Manacles earlier...Would Universe have been saved?"It is not your fault," Tian Yue said, quickly, though he gave his brother a grateful smile for the consideration in that apology. "We saved much." And lost much, but the fact that anything had been saved was a miracle.
Yet we are gods. Miracles are our stock-in-trade, aren't they?
"What is the Tree like, now? I saw it only from the outside, and that briefly, while in the Ancient Pantheon. I assume it still retains enough stability to support travel? Do any yet live within the coils that you encountered, or is all you saw dust and ruin? Anything at all would be helpful... and you know Phaedra would tax me dearly for such knowledge." He scowled.Jin Huang nodded acceptance of the remark and cast his thoughts back to the Tree, and his journey there. "When we were there, it was largely intact. There were markers within the trunk, carved there by someone or thing that I have long since forgotten. Our path was marked in other ways. The gouges made by dragon claws are hard to mistake," he said with a quick grin. "I would assume that it has not all fallen to decay, yet I would be wary, even in the main trunk itself."
A demon came then, setting a tray with two glasses of water on a nearby table before bowing itself away. Jin Huang took one, and a drink, before continuing. "There were signs that some still dwelt within the Tree, yet if they were newcome or lived there of old, I could not say. The taproot we travelled through and to certainly seemed deserted, though that may have been a side effect of my last journey there." His lips twitched as the dragon suppresed another grin. Tax him dearly indeed."Your last journey? So the keeper of the manacles was...?" Tian Yue looked surprised, then chuckled and shook his head. "It seems this is becoming a tradition among the Kings - seeking out our own corpses. Zhijian and I have both done so as well, though for me it was happenstance, not deliberate."
He took the offered glass as well, though he held it between his hands, blinking for a moment as he studied the size of his own digits in comparison to the glass of water. He certainly was imposing even in human shape, wasn't he...? "I have a theory, you see - that we can track the survival or death of worlds by observing Yggdrasil itself. Dead limbs would bear no fruit, as it were. The Spirit Guide will accompany me, and provide another failsafe - observing the paths of the dead. Void leaves no souls behind to wander downward. If there is a marked difference between living and dead, then that might prove a valid hypothesis." "In retrospect, it appears obvious," Jin Huang commented with a wry half shrug of his shoulders. "I had intended to return, once everything was settled. There were other treasures there, besides the Manacles." But that, like so many other plans, had stalled. Of course, the only entrance to the World Tree he knew about was one in a place he could no longer reach.
"That seems to be a sound theory," he said after a moment of thinking it through. "I know little enough of Yggdrasil these days." Perhaps in the past he had known more; certainly, he had known enough to travel through the Tree at the last.
"The Spirit Guide?" Jin Huang asked curiously, the title ringing a faint bell deep in the recesses of his memory. And if the Dead were moving...where were they moving to?"The Spirit Guide, yes... brother to Underworld, I believe. His name in this age is Ankou." Tian Yue nodded. "Should the plan of following mana prove viable, it should save us some time, at least. Checking each world individually would be... prohibitively difficult, and I cannot fathom our Lord sending away a Dragon King for such a long period of time. Not when the world remains so fragile." He frowned slightly and tapped his glass with one claw, making it chime in his grasp. "The Grigori are ancient and fearsome opponents, and we are so, so very vulnerable. We need strength, and we need time."Sitting up somewhat straighter at the mention of Underworld, only the very tip of Jin Huang's tail quivered to indicate his interest. There was something there, an association that hovered at the very reaches of his memory. But now was not the time to pursue it further. "The worlds will heal through the efforts of others as well," the dragon remarked. "It is not only we who can do the work." Glyph, for one, came to mind. Forests would find much work to be done, as would those whose natures followed in the same vein.
"Always, we need more time," he commented, somewhat sourly. "And this time, there are no Manacles to slow the process.""All are valuable, indeed - but to lose any deity for an extended time to a far-away trip from which they could not easily be recalled in time of need would be a risky move." Tian Yue sighed. "I am no great strategist, no Great Chien-Tang to serve as general and warlord. And Zhijian brings news that the Crown wishes us all to hone ourselves. The ancient War... is all but faded from my memory. I hope He bears more knowledge."
Yet he remembered - the woman, the Pearl. "Hone ourselves?" Jin Huang questioned with a puzzled look. He had never been, in all his memories, a great fighter. Even Yu the Five-Clawed had been better at the martial than he. But he had found a weapon, one that felt familiar to his human hands. Resuming practice with it was something that must be done, however, especially since He wished it so. Though which would be more useful: a dragon, or a man? "So much lost, through our Fading. And if your hope is that He remembers it?" He snorted lightly.
"I hope you like riddles, then."Tian Yue made a face. "Indeed. Before He returned, though, I had the privilege of reading an ancient chronicle written in His hand. I imagine such knowledge would be contained there... and if not, surely Gianfar would know, Knowledge himself. But I cannot concern myself with it now, not with the false sky's forging at hand. What can we do but prepare ourselves and prepare those we care for? We are so weakened, yet those that remain are strong, devoted."
In general, at any rate."Such would prove useful if it were easier to obtain the information we need from them." Jin Huang lightly drummed his fingers against his leg in thought. "False sky? Is such meant to replace what was lost?" That did not sound promising, not at all. Would such a creation truly bridge the worlds once more?
"Perhaps you do not need to do everything yourself, hm?" he said, teasing. "Zhijian would not be my first choice for reading a book, but I might be able to make myself useful in that matter." That, and have the demons prepare themselves once more. And if this false sky did restore the connections between the worlds...There were other forces and beings he could finally retrieve.Tian Yue laughed, and shook his head ruefully. "Too true. It is a holdover, I suppose, from when we were so few. Only myself and Zhijian, it seemed, for such a long time. It is good to have you back," he added, genuine smile on his face.
Then he sobered again. "I do not know precisely what our Lord intends to do, but the worlds must be connected anew, and dawn brought again. All I know is what is put in place will not be Universe." Never again.Oh, Jin Huang could relate to that feeling. From what he could remember of being Yu Huang, it had seemed as though he had been one of an even fewer number than he should have. "Believe me, it is good to be back," he replied dryly, though quickly echoing his brother's smile. This time, there was much he would do differently.
"If it is not Universe...Then what shall it be? Forgive me, brother, but as you are unfamiliar with the Tree, so too am I with the wide expanses of space." And that tickled another memory, one of a past association, perhaps. But he could not bring it to mind, so he regretfully let it slip away."I wonder myself," Tian Yue said, with a sigh. "I cannot... I cannot conceive of a the heavens not... living and breathing. When Universe faded, I was left alone.. but the heavens remained. The stars did not go out..."
He shook his head. "A facade, perhaps, a false sky to spread colors and stars across, to hold the celestial bodies, but with no voice, no self. I do not know for certain." Jin Huang shivered slightly. "I do not know if I like the sound of that," he admitted. "Is there no hope, then, for another Universe?" He had died twice, gathered and regathered into the gem, but perhaps that been a special circumstance, something to do with the Kings...
"Or was it a true death?" "Yes," Tian Yue said, very quietly indeed. "It was... true. What is Eaten cannot be restored." "I..." Jin Huang opened and closed his mouth a few times, feeling entirely awkward. Looking down at the glass in his hands, he twsited it about a few times.
"Was there anything else you might need to know?" he asked finally, utterly unable to offer any further condolences without sounding trite.Tian Yue gave his brother a sad smile. "It's alright, Brother - I have come to terms with it. Inasmuch as one can. And my task to join the worlds... is penance, of a sort. A responsibility of the Celestial to place a facade over the Nothing. Do not worry about me."Jin Huang refrained from commenting; he would, of course, continue to be concerned about his brother. How could he not? One simply had to be quieter about it, that was all. So he sat in his chair, mind attempting to come up with some sort of conversational change, although nothing seemed quite right. It was with some relief that a rather young demon came into the room and whispered in his ear.
"Ah. Apparently, this room is to be painted," he said after a moment. "It can certainly wait, they wouldn't dream of interrupting, and so on and so forth," Jin Huang continued with an amused smile as the demon fidgeted rather anxiously behind him. "I wouldn't dream of throwing off their schedule, however."Tian Yue nodded, understanding what his brother had not said aloud; he grinned at the demon's fidgeting. "Nor would I - while I would linger here, Brother, I must go set my own feet to those wooded paths, as you have. The sooner I go, the sooner I can return...and the sooner the sky can be set to rights, as best it can be.""Then I wish you safe travel and a swift return, once you have completed your task," Kin Huang said, standing up and absentmindedly handing his glass of water to the still fidgeting demon before offering his brother a firm handclasp. "While I'm sure the results will be largely self-evident," he continued, rather dryly, "Perhaps you could visit again afterwards, and tell me of your search.""Of course," Tian Yue said firmly, returning his brother's gesture. "I know you will tend to our Lord's needs. I have no worries, Brother." There were many things that bound the Dragon Kings together, unwavering trust not the least of them.

...||Many Meetings He had seen and spoken to Zhijian, the last time he had been here. But Jin Huang had retreated to his home after that meeting, not even making it into the Pantheon proper, and had not ventured forth since. Tian Yue had found him there, reminding him gently but firmly of where his duty lay. So he had come again to the Pantheon, not firm in his resolve and his self; he remained full of doubt and worry. But he had come anyway, the only thing he was sure of that to delay any further his return would only...what? He had no idea how Creation would react to him, but the memory of Destruction lived on, and the dragon was glad that it was not Him that he would find within or without.
There was no guarantee that he would find his Lord within the Pantheon, or even on the grounds at all, of course. There was hope that he would, of course, and Jin Huang intuitively felt that He would always strive to answer a call from his Kings. Even one as conspicuously absent as he had been. Maybe even especially so, in that case. One among many things that might be talked about, between them, and with a wrench, Jin Huang drove his thoughts to something more pleasant. He had been carrying the key to the Treasury that Cosine had given to him, and now it was time to return it to it's proper owner.
Unless, of course, that was him. A brief frown of confusion crossed his face as he entered the soaring and open halls of the Pantheon, standing for a moment to soak it all in. It was much changed from the last time he had been within it's walls, changed and made more inviting. The twin sets of stairs had gone leaving behind only one. The dragon knew that if he ascended, he would find welcome among some few of the residents. But it was what else that might be up there called his attention most. He had been told that Harmodious lived there, and more. One of the other central facts of his existence was there as well.
But he hesitated at the foot of that staircase, wondering who he would meet if he went up. So Jin Huang stood, stood and waited...hoping and dreading that someone would come down to meet him.It was just Jin Huang's luck that his return to what had once been the ornate Pantheon building (but was now a much more open space) would carry with it the meeting of an old friend.
Tucked into his dwelling, the Dragon King Yu Five Claws felt a familiar sort of internal tug; one that he might not have recognized, save that he'd spent time with Zhijian and as such he knew that pull for what it was: A Brother. Swiftly and with no unnecessary expenditure of energy the beast-god rose from his lair; down the hall past doors with sigils familiar and unfamiliar, further and further, down to the staircase.
Down to Jin Huang.
Words of greeting rose and fell from Xia Lu Ling's muzzle - age old kinship and their shared rebirth causing two sets of bright blue eyes to squeeze shut in a very animalian gesture of happiness and pleasure even as he extended one thickly furred limb out in what would be a hand-shake, hand-clasping or even a brotherly hug - it depended upon the Treasurer.
"Are you hunting Treasure, my Brother? Or have you come to See?" See their Lord and Master, see the changes wrought...see the Mortal and see too the mortals. His words could have meant any of those or all of them.It was an instinctive reaction that made Jin Huang take a cautious step backwards. Changed though they both were, Delmin's body recognized the form now padding towards it, ignoring the words of welcome. But Delmin was not there, and a Dragon King held control instead. So a step forward was made once more, reaching his hand out to meet the offered one. "Hunting treasure? Better by far to have it brought to me," he replied with a lazy grin that disappeared as quickly as it had come.
"I have come...Because I must. We are Dragon Kings, and I have been too long from our Lord's side." Worry now creased his face, something he would never have shown to any not his siblings. But it was so easy now, to recognize the power that coiled deep within them all. "How have things fared?"Jin Huang's initial reaction of retreat amused the sliver of Fragment yet floating inside the Dragon King but it did not amuse Yu so well. He realized that an apology was likely in order - his Brother deserved that, at least. A firm hand-clasp and the King's muzzle pulled back in a welcoming 'smile' (a grimace, really). "This is true enough, Brother."
A good question from the Treasurer; how to answer? "Things are slowly improving with His return...of course, we are needed. He requests that we go forth and aid the mortals, they are most open and believing now." There was so much more that could have been said, but obviously Jin Huang was there to speak with Creation and would likely hear much of the same from Him.
"We have missed you, Brother. It is good to see you returned."Despite the earlier hesitation, there was no sign of it in his grasp. Jin Huang listened as his brother spoke, letting out a small sigh. "Tian Yue tell me that He wishes for us to hone ourselves." A hand lazily gestured at himself. :I am no warrior, no weapon ready for use. But I guard, and I will so as I can, in my manner." He shrugged then, an elegant movement.
"As for mortals, I have little idea what we Kings can offer them. But they have need of us, as we have of them," Jin Huang commented thoughtfully, tail slowly moving behind him. "Would He see me now, do you think? Or if there is some other matter that demands His attention, I will wait.""Ah, I have not spoken with Tian Yue as of yet." Xia Lu Ling looked back up towards the stairs from whence he had come; his mind touching almost lovingly at the reasoning why he had yet to gather with his Brothers. "My place has been at His side and so I have remained. Our Lord moves slowly, as though waking from a long slumber. It is...apt - for that is what happened."
His thick tail twitched when his multiple eyes caught the motion from Jin's own tail. "I did speak with Gianfar of Knowledge, to learn more of the Grigori, as well as with Creation at length. Tian Yue is correct: we must hone ourselves for the battle to come...and also support the Mortals. In this time, it is their beliefs that will provide us our greatest assets." Would Creation see the Treasurer? Of course he would! "He would be most pleased to see you, Brother." Again, one of his siblings mentioned the reborn Knowledge. Even if memory was lost, surely he would know how best to recover such that could be found. And apparently had, to hear the others talk. "I've missed so much, staying away," Jin Huang commented, refraining from making further remark upon the information. There was much to learn, and much to think about. His preference would always be for more time to think, and so he said nothing, only nodding his head in acknowledgement.
"Then we shall find Him," he said, taking steps up the stairs, assuming Xia Lu Ling would follow. His place was, after all, at the Crown's side always. Reaching the top, Jin Huang hesitated once more. He did not know where Creation now dwelt, but he would never fail to find his Lord. But it was polite to introduce oneself, after all. "My Lord?" he asked softly. "Futs Lung requests an audience."Fair and plain was the new portal to the keepings of the Crown in that day and age. Gone were the grotesques of bone, wood and blood of earlier dragon's findings. The door was the nearly white heartwood of ash, impossibly smooth and polished as though stone, curled in raised arches and symmetrical knot work. Distinct to dragon ears was the sound of a voice nearing, footsteps and a presence beyond the door before it even opened and a echo-timbered tenor greeted them as it swung in, "Harmodius sends his welcome, Sons of Scales, and bids you both feel at leisure to enter." Having spoken, the man back-stepped to allow them in and left the door ajar. The rooms beyond were a maze of unnamed flowers and stones that pathed in all three dimensions. Yu said nothing to his Brother's admittance that much had happened while he had been gone from the Pantheon grounds; whatever Jin Huang had been doing, he was not going to press - it didn't matter so much that he was there now.
Fur and scales shifted as the dark King moved; he well knew where to go - none of them could deny that they had a sort of psychic magnetism where Creation was concerned. At the great, gleaming doors his eyes wandered as his keen ears picked up the sounds of one approaching to grant entrance. This one...this place...a scent familiar and unfamiliar all at once: Creation's scent and handiwork all over in this newer space.
"Come Brother, he waits within these blooms!" There was joy in his tone and his body fairly hummed at being near to Harmodius once more. A nudge to Jin Huang and then the darkly furred beast-Dragon was moving onward, inward -- to their Lord!Jin Huang followed less quickly behind his brother, taking measured steps through the door and into the breaktaking sight that was his Lord's quarters. A maze indeed, one that rose into dizzying three dimensions. The correct path to where Creation waited would perhaps be easy to find to one who was not a King; to them, of course, it was a trivial matter. Continuing his slow walk, Futs Lung looked about in thought and wonder, that such should replace the decor of old. He kept his hands in his pockets as he walked, a residual habit from his host. The heavy weight of the key rested in one, fingers curled gently around it.
Only one of the reasons he had come today, of course. But it was perhaps the easiest of them. When Harmodious had been found, Jin Huang slid easily to one knee, bowing his head in reverance to his Creator. "My Lord," Jin Huang murmured softly, gratefully. "I am glad to see you well."The Eldest was reclined against rose whose branches and girth matched that of a tree, arching up feet and drifting white petals as occasional rain. The great tome that had served Tian Yue in the failing days lay open on his lap to early pages and he smiled as he looked up from them. "'Mazes nor perfumes of the bounty of the earth ever hide me from the searching of Dragons. Welcome, dragon-sons. Welcome and be at ease. " He looked over the kneel to the full three of them, the mortal have followed the two at a respectable distance and yet still accompanying. Good. "Does hunger or thirst sit on your minds, firstly? That is easily remedied and eases relaxation. Half yet of your bodies are mortal kind." Pale skin and foliage; Creation was there, before them with a tome that lay open upon His lap and a smile pulling at the corners of His mouth at their approach. Yu's muzzle pulled into a sort-of-smile, laughing as the joy he felt being near Creation swelled up through his entire being.
"My Lord, our hearts over-fill with joy to see you again." Of all the Kings reborn in these times, perhaps Yu the Five Claw was the one that had been able to spend the most time with Him...and yet he always hungered for more. "Both, my Lord. I thirst more than hunger." Xia Lu Ling's body was almost always wanting food or drink to sate it; his host had been a most...hungry creature - something that hadn't yet left him. He looked over to Jin to see if he would take up their Lord's offer of food and drink. At Creation's welcome, Jin Huang stood once more, brushing the knee of his pants in an absentminded geture of fussiness. The smile dancing about His face did much to set the dragon at ease, and he offered one in return, though it was a small one. "A glass of water, perhaps," he replied to the request diffedently, rolling one shoulder in a half-shrug. Neither he nor his host ate much; Delmin from scarcity, Jin Huang having adopted the habit from the man.
While there were many things Jin Huang would perhaps have liked to ask his Lord, now was not the time for it. Instead, the dragon felt himself relaxing, surprising himself. He hadn't realized how tense he'd been, both physically and mentally, until the stress was removed. The comforting presence of Harmodious did not erase the underlying problems Jin Huang had been tying himself in knots over, but placed them at a remove, making them seem insignificant. A respite the dragon welcomed, closing his eyes briefly to savor it for a moment, to hold it in memory for when he was out of His presence.Water and wine both appeared with the wave of a hand, goblets and a decorated silver measure to divide and mix the two at leisure and preference of flavour. "'Please, enjoy at your pleasure. It will not run out. Aris, join us, you are no stranger to these, nor they to you, whatever first meetings made again may seem. " Creation said the last with mirth colouring his words. A joke, no doubt, at the expense of the failings of mortal tongues to wholly explain the situation. The mortal still seemed hesitant, but walked in wide circle around the dragons to sit by Creation's side. He took up the water pitcher, as Aquarius' Ganymede, "More water then wine? The flavour of a little of the latter will make it easier to drink in quantity. If your worried about keeping hydrated. " Aris, hmm? Xia Lu Ling could little recall Important Events of his past self so he had no chance at recalling the bright-eyed brunette in the service of the Twin Crown. He cocked his head a bit as Creation guided Aris to serve them with gentle, encouraging words.
"More water, yes. Wine to add flavor, but not to overpower. That would suit me best, though I cannot speak for my Brother." He would watch Aris curiously, wondering at the past briefly though he was not really concerned. What mattered now was not the past, but the present; Aris had a soft scent in Yu's nose, his own scent mixed with the heady, ambrosial scent of Creation. "Do not let my cup empty, bright-eyed Aris." Words spoken as a request and with a twist of muzzle meant to be a smile. The name given to the mortal struck a chord deep within Jin Huang's memory, especially given Creation's assertion that they were no strangers. But whatever association they had had in the past remained beyond thed ragon's recall.
"My brother speaks for my tastes as well," he commented with a smile; slightly stiff around the edges, but genuine for all that. "My Lord," Jin Huang said as Aris poured the drinks, "I have come to return something to you, and ask a favor." And apologize was unspoken, but the flicker of guilt and worry in Futs Lung's eyes flared slightly as he drank in the sight and prescence of Creation. The drink was mixed and set before each of them, and the mortal sat quietly beside Creation. "'Tell me, noble dragons, how you survive and pass your titles ? What keys do you bring of knowing what goes beyond the walls of toil? "Yu took the glass Aris set before him and drank deeply; the heavy taste of the wine across his palate softened by the water that had been mixed in. He cocked his head at Jin Huang's words - a favor? Not exactly surprising to Xia Lu Ling; many of the beings that came for an audience with Creation had requests or favors. Silence had asked for two things, but had also been asked something in return. Yu's fur rippled a bit as his quick-silver mind skittered back over that encounter and several others he could recall.
Yes, there was much asked of their Lord now. And His nature was to give, inasmuch as He could.
"I have spent much of my time among the mortals as well as hosts and other gods. Many do not understand or know what happened." He paused and looked from each of the men present before continuing. Even to his own ears, the words sounded frail and without back-bone to help hold them up. Yu had been making every effort he could to bring the Dragon Kings together and to help the mortals; nurturing the belief that had been borne within many of their hearts so that the small flames might be fanned into a roaring fire spreading across the lands.
"Small things, but I have hope that they will have a good effect." And yet, he felt as though his efforts were insignificant compared to what needed to be done.Jin Huang sipped at his drink while his brother spoke, fingers lightly grasping the glass while he paid polite attention. It was important to fan the fires of mortal belief, and the sharp p***k of his consciene forced him to admit to himself that perhaps he had not done as much of that as he could have. Oh, he could rationalize it away - he was rather busy, and there had been other things to deal with - but that was no excuse. There were mortals who still lingered around his house - former follower's of Delmin who hadn't left. He could start with them, perhaps. A fitting legacy for the man who had given his life that Futs Lung would live again.
It was with a slight start that he realized Yu had finished talking for the moment. A slight flush spread across his face as he toyed with the glass for a moment longer. "Small things are how larger ones are built," he murmured softly, mostly to Yu. "I myself have been involved with some few mortals," and that was a term that encompassed far too little, truly; the demons were not mortal, and yet they could be counted among those who held faith, "Those my host once counted friend, retrieved from their world before the death of Universe." They had distanced themselves somewhat after Delmin's not-quite death, and yet they still remained under his care. "'A man who has first found he is strong again after long infirmity and his bed will find it better to take careful steps instead of raising and running towards sight of first sunrise from his dais. "
"It is not always so different for gods or dragons. Be not ashamed of small steps or 'matters of little import'. It is as you say. Walls are made of bricks, wings of individual feathers. A hoard of single coins and jewels."
"The gallantry and games of our kind once moved in both grand sweeps and subtle ploys whose intricacies took generations to play out. The day will come again, I think, should those like to Phaedra ...with taste for intrigue, find their footing with the coming of new dawns."Yu's tail twitched in pleasure at Creation's words; that he had been correct in doing small things didn't matter, but that He felt it right meant everything.
"I believe you are right. Already the groundwork of such games are being laid amongst the mortal survivors." He shook his head a bit and drained his cup, offering it out for a refill before continuing. "In the interest of mortal or God, it matters not. Anything begun now will have great impact, though for now it seems leaning toward the good of All, towards rebirth and rebuilding." As it should have been, as it needed to be.
Granted, it would be a good while before such delicate, intricate strings were so perfectly tuned as they had been in ages past...but hey, they were making progress; taking strides and all that fun stuff. The darkly furred Dragon King turned his head towards his brother - Jin Huang's discomfort was fairly obvious to him though he would never have exposed any such thing (maybe a little good-natured ribbing, once they were away from Creation would be alright?)A small smile creased Jin Huang's face at the mention of Phaedra; he had not seen that particular goddess since his rebirth, and it was likely overdue for him to reintroduce himself. No doubt his delay in doing so would earn him some stinging reprimand, but that was a small matter. "I think those of like inclination work slowly, building their own circles of followers. It is of benefit to All, however, as my brother says. A stronger foundation to withstand the coming storms."Their nerves must have had the better of them, his sons so new returned, that their words were little else but echoes of his own. Confirmations of agreement, silence following. "'Well then, the straw and mud of the future aside, what favor came you to request? "Round and round, always. None of the Gods - the Dragon Kings included - had any idea what to do. At least, none that were around or readily available. Gainfar might have known better, but the grey-winged dove that scented of dust and parchment had disappeared. Creation, of course, which was likely why everyone that sought His audience ended up repeating what words the Twin Crown spoke.
No doubt they too felt ineffectual and sheepish doing so. Yu certainly did. His lack of knowing anything was an annoyance - ignorance frustrated and chafed. But this was not about him, no - this was for his Brother, Futs Lung. It was Jin Huang had sought out Creation and been brought to His pale feet, not Xia Lu Ling. Indeed, he spent much of his time with his great shaggy head under Creation's firm palm, holding up the Eldest as he wished for walk and talk.
Ah, but that did remind him of something he'd meant to ask before Jin had arrived. "I had wondered if you knew where Gianfar hid. I had pressed him to aid me in attempting the Old Language, as well as giving me information on the Grigori...but he seems to have disappeared. Neither Silence nor Dream know where the old grey bird flew off too. They seem to think the Library ate him." Yu snorted a bit but cocked his head towards Jin, wondering if perhaps hearing his own request might free his Brother's frozen tongue.
Granted, Yu was not certain he absolutely needed Gianfar; perhaps there were others that knew what he wanted to know - in part or in whole. Beings other than Creation, who surely was busy with things other than aiding an overgrown puppy with his Letters, or with old stories and information. "Or another, would be just as well. Gianfar weighs his words carefully and tells only what he wishes to tell. Yourself knows best, but I would not take your time in this when there are much more pressing things to attend."
Words spoken, Yu settled, ears flicking back and forth to pick up the slightest sound - the rustle of fabric as Jin Huang moved, the softest sliding sound of Creation's hair against flesh as His head turned. Now, perhaps his Brother would cease being so reserved - or had he always been so? Yu couldn't recall any more than he could remember when Gianfar had been sentenced for his crimes against Creation before the Fading. It was entirely possible that at some point Futs Lung had been less reserved, less formal. Possible, and yet given how quickly Jin Huang had fallen into reticence, it seemed less and less likely that he had ever been otherwise. Except, perhaps, around his fellow Kings.
They were all born anew, however, which made Jin Huang somewhat defensive; this especially considering his previous failure. So he was still feeling out his Brothers, learning and remembering their behaviors and the network of relations that kept them bound tighter than mere duty would ever have.
That was an ongoing thing, and not why he had come seeking the Crown. Shifting from foot to foot slightly, tail held still from long habit, Jin Huang was prepared to speak and ask his favor, except that Xia Lu Ling spoke first. There was no irritation, no annoyance, at the question asked. It would be very difficult to be seriously annoyed by anything the other Kings did; minor annoyance was another thing entirely, as Zhijian's habit of pouncing had proved.
Once Xia Lu Ling had stopped speaking, his words eminently sensible, his brother let a small, wry, grin flicker across his face. "I fear my request is nothing so noble. It is simply that, well," he lifted one shoulder in a half shrug, "I would like to arrange for quarters within the halls of the Pantheon for myself, and those of my retainers who wish to reside here." "Gianfar, I have no doubts, will keep his promises of aid. Unfortunately you did not reckon that it will be on his own time schedule, and the awareness of time-""You mean lack thereof, Harmodius, " "Truly said. Offhand, I should say he has either secreted himself away someplace with some tomes of import for just such purpose of puzzling them out for your efforts and for teaching, or I would say he has remembered the location of some significant tome to item to that same aim and went off to retrieve it. To him, great or small, we are all just students and so doomed to wait on his lectures in due time. "
"As for accommodations, those are easily found. The dragon door, crossed and braided with knot work of many precious metals will lead to a space that you may twist to your needs and those of your household.Yu shook his head in a manner very much like a dog and snorted; ah, Gianfar...that he would treat any and all as students, force them to bow to his unrepentant carelessness with time might have made the Dragon King a few steps past annoyed, but it was so damned funny - and true.
"Plausible, considering Gianfar." He snorted again closed his eyes while skinning back his muzzle in a grimace-like show of mirth; beastial muzzles were not meant for smiles but thankfully present company would feel no fear or trepidation at such an expression. Creation knew it well and the mortal at his side, though not long in his place would have been near Xia Lu Ling long enough by then to know nary a fang or claw would harm. As for Jin...well, those teeth had tried to eat his host, once, but no more. In present company, Yu was relatively harmelss: a giant puppy that Harmodius could sprawl across at will. "Perhaps I should clip his wings when he returns...or chain him to his companions." Rumbled words half in jest; Gianfar vexed him greatly but he also liked the dirty old bird.
Even if he had invited Fragment to shove parts of their body into the Void wall. Hmph.
Jin made his request while he sprawled, tail thumping dully against the floor; bright blue eyes slitting open to watch the mortal thoughtfully. Every so often, the darker nature of his host still surged forward and urged him to rend tender mortal flesh - he'd learned to take the good with the bad, when it came to what Fragment had left to him. Not having as much Dragon as Beast had made things that much harder, had left more Beast than he would have wished - at least initially. Ah, but even so...he shouldn't be thinking that Aris looked and smelled like a delicious snack. A snack that would bring the wrath of Creation down on him and He only knew what else. No thanks, if the urge to devour a mortal got too strong, there were others...like that technicolor b***h his siblings and their tiny retinue had brought to meet Creation before. She deserved to be eaten!Jin Huang remained silent, though still attentive, as Harmodius and Xia Lu Ling spoke with amused tolerance and fondness of Gianfar; the Treasurer was not acquainted with the God of Knowledge, though he was developing a mental picture of the Library's keeper thanks to the way his Lord and brother spoke of him.
There was a bit of a spinal reflex reaction when Xia grinned, a slight shying away from the other Dragon. Delmin's body still remembered when those fangs had been bared at him in a much less friendly faashion, though Jin Huang quickly stamped on the reaction. There was nothing to fear from those teeth and claws anymore. Indeed, there was much to admire about them, as it made Xia impressively suited to his traditional duty of guarding the Crown.
"Thank you my Lord," he said in somewhat startled reply to Harmodius' instructions on where he would be able to find his new rooms. Creation certainly was able to work fast, although that shouldn't have come as a surprise. He shifted his feet slightly, curious as to how the shaping of the rooms would work and eager to get started on the project. He would have to bring some few of his servants back to the Pantheon to plan a design and layout, else there would be no end of subtle guilt for not allowing them to aid him in what they considered mundane tasks. "You simply will something from a clear picture and intent in your mind, Jin Huang, and it will become in the wildspace that is beyond the door." He spoke to the explanation of workings of the magic of the rooms he made. Aris' expression sallowed, turning thoughtful, but he said nothing. "Were there any other simple requests, or shall we leave it to wine and good company then?" "None for me, Lord. Well you know I enjoy present company." Yes, his stomach still rumbled quietly for Aris' flesh, causing him to lick his massive chops at Destruction's 'mate', but truly he had only stumbled upon Jin Huang and offered to accompany him back to his own post.
"And on that thought, I would not disagree to another glass, at all." Here his eyes took on a less predatory set towards the keeper of the pour and mortal of the interesting expression. It was good to have something a dragon wanted, especially a dragon one was inclined to sprawl across on various occasions as Yu was. Drink and curiosity - what was Aris pondering that had caused his expression to go from pleasant to other?
Bah, no matter to him; Jin had made his request, Creation answered and for his purposes, all that was left to be done was - as Harmodius said - leave it to wine and good company.
And that is what Xia Lu Ling would do: enjoy the wine and good company until his brother departed Harmodius' rooms and Aris retreated to his bower. The dragon himself would remain at his Master's side, ever the ready one to serve.

...||Underground Rivers She had simply needed out..
Illisia had to admit that Lindita ultimately was devoted to Xun (and by extend, her) and meant well. She meant well... And she was a woman of a mission. She wanted to do everything and anything, and to be honest it was driving Illisia fairly batshit, because it left her with barely anything to do. And so, she had left the faun to finding furniture for her room and fled the scene in seach of something more interesting than sit and watch.
Illisia definitively was not used to sitting and being litterally served, per-se. And she was not sure if she liked it.
For her part, her wandering took her some place unknown, where there was still many remains of destroyed houses nearby, and yet one stood, relatively unshattered. Hm... This was rather odd.Not only was the house still intact, it showed signs of industrious - and recent - repair. There were a few beings milling about outside it, and as soon as the night elf had been spotted, a quick conference was apparently held with one member heading towards her shortly afterwards. The demon, although it was not immediately clear that it was, in fact, a demon, approached Illisia almost cautiously. "Are you perhaps lost?" she asked, thumbing the hem of her rough black shirt nerviously. She didn't look like much of a threat, and while there were not many visitors to Jin Huang's house... "Or have you come to see my Lord?" You could never be too certain; and if Illisia looked carefully, she could see the others assuming positions nearer the house, as if to defend against anything she might try. Ilisia was clearly a little taken by surprise, and stopped in her tracks. She looked much like a warrior, with her build and height, and she held her hands away from her to show that she was not armed. The last thing she wanted was trouble. This also had the effect to make the gem on her arm very visible - and rather unmistakable, really, but the elf did not really think about that. Thankfully, she also did not seem to recognize the demon as exactly that.
"Im sorry, I was just passing by. I saw that this place was actually pretty well-kept so I got curious." Her lord... one of the gods ? Well, maybe not all of them liked to stay at the pantheon. Kind of how many of her kind lived away from the greater gatherings. The demon relaxed as Illisia spread her arms to show her lack of threat, but immediately tensed again as she saw the gem placed on her arm. "Y-es," she half-stuttered out. Her lord had impressed upon all of his demonic servants that bearers of gems were to be treated as respected guests (except in certain circumstances), and to be brought to him immediately, if they so desired. "It wouldn't do to live in a falling down house," she laughed out after a moment's thought. "Ah...Would you care to call upon my Lord? He has extended an invitation to any of the gem-carriers, if they stop by." The sudden nervousness made one long eyebrow rise slightly. What could...
Oh.
Gem.
She always forgot about it. That meant her lord was most likely a god then.
"If he is not busy with anything else." Illisia shook her head. She would be loathe to bother a god simply because she was passing by."I don't think he'll mind," she assured the night elf as she began to walk back towards the house. The other demons went back to their tasks at her reassuring nod, although one or two kept an eye on Illisia as she followed. The inside of the house was in much better repair than the outside; indeed, one would almost assume that Gehenna had never happened, if it was anything to go by. The only thing truly lacking was furniture. There were two chairs off to the right, and the demon directed the guest to one before bowing and heading up the spiral stairs. It took only a moment for her to come scurrying back down, bowing once again to the figure following at a more sedate pace behind. "My lord Jin Huang, the Dragon King Futs Lung, Treasurer to the Crown," the demon announced once he had finished descending. He cocked an eyebrow at his guest, feeling a faint and familiar mental hint of something from the woman. "Would you care for something to eat or drink?" Jin Huang asked urbanely, his smooth tenor curious and practically asking her to introduce herself - and the god she carried on her arm.Illisia followed the woman, looking around her with obvious interest, but careful not to disturb anything. If she was aware of still being watched, she showed none of it.
She sat when indicated to do so, one long leg folding over the other, one bare feet still set on the floor. Just when she started to wonder who this lord was, she got her answer.
Like a magnet. That made how many now, on pure accident ?Xun Jiang, of course, found this talent of his host to simply stumble onto his brother a rather handy thing. And now, he was in the company of one more. That indeed did make him pay greater attention to the outside. Futs Lung..."I would appreciate a drink." She admitted, before continuing. She knew how this went by now. "Your brother Xun Jiang, Ti Lung, sends his greeting, and regret that he cannot speak to you directly. I will relay, if you wish ?"A brief wave of his hand set the demon off towards what was presumably a kitchen. Her introduction, however, caused a slightly stunned expression to flicker across his face, though it was quickly replaced by a broad and welcoming smile. "Ti Lung!" Jin Huang exclaimed gladly, hurrying over to the woman, sitting down in the chair opposite. "It is good to see you again, as it were," he continued, teasing as only he would do with his siblings.
"And that would be most welcome."Xun was also clearly pleased with his brother's reaction. Clearly Jin hadn't seen this coming at all. He did laugh a bit, but nothing in Illisia's expression betrayed it."It is good indeed." The words where the elf's, but her body language did not match up with them. Not that it was a lie, not at all, but Illisia looked more nervous than anything else. She still wasn't quite sure how to deal with gods at large, but she figured the point was moot.
"I must apologize for stumbling about unannounced." Illisia shook her head. "But it is good that I have found you, no matter how accidentally."There were still too many sibilings unaccounted for. He had heard of Chien Tang, but not seen him. Same with his jet black sister, Qian. Shen and Mang... were downright unaccounted for."Hopefully we have not taken you away from anything important ?" The question was Illisia's.The demon reappeared briefly with a pair of glasses filled with water; when they had been taken, she left as quickly as she could. Jin Huang waved a hand dismissively at his brother's apology. "Few enough know where I live, so stumbling about seems to be the best way to find me," he replied with another grin. He liked his privacy, thank you very much, but he would never hide from his siblings.
"No, nothing I can't pick up later," he reassured the woman; easy enough for him to tell who had thought what words. "Simply a minor discussion regarding the disposition of some decoration." Apparently this dragon rarely dropped his formality, even with a brother. "Have you been well?" A somewhat sharper glance accompianed the question; Jin Huang had heard naught of too many of his siblings. Only three - now four - were known to him as being active.Illisia accepted the glass as it was given to her, and took a sip. That glance did not go unnoticed by either party, and her ears flicked back slightly on reflex.
"I..." She made a bit of a face. Xun had apparently jumped the gun a little and she was now waiting for him to continue. "I have been well, so far. Since my return. We get along well."Illisia, the dragon felt, had been the right choice, but it seemed better to leave that unsaid."The first host... failed." There was shame in that - and also fear. Most likely Illisia's. She had came to term with this a long time ago, but that this might also be her own fate was still a source of fear to the night elf. "I have only returned recently."Jin Huang looked nothing but attentive as his brother's host spoke, but once she had finished, he leaned back slightly in his chair, lips pursed. His first host failed? That was both reassuring and disturbing, all at once. "I am glad to see you have found a new host," the dragon said finally, sympathetic. "And while the passing of another is no true cause for joy, I hope you both will forgive me in hoping you prosper with your second chance as you could not with your first." A pause.
"As I have with mine.""It is not." Illisia relayed once more. The elf could not help but wonder if he would ever be able to truly forget himself. From having literally wasted a life.
"We will not fail, this time. I will not allow it." Illisia shook her head. Xun was completely certain of that, and in turn it helped ease the woman's worry as time passed on. The dragon king had to be her rock on that matter, and he would do so to the best of his ability... and if that meant hiding his own lack of memory on the matter, then so be it. There were many questions he wished to ask to his brother, but it may only serve to frighten Illisia. Better to wait.
He was getting somewhat decent at this whole patience thing.A flicker of something came over Jin Huang's face, but it was gone before any hint of his thoughts could be discerned. Instead, he took a sip of water and smiled reassuringly. "I have faith that you will not," he said, sounding as confident as Xun Jiang. There were certainly things he'd like to talk about with this brother - assuring him that everything would indeed work out, for one thing - but if Ti Lung did not wish to speak of such things through his host, then Futs Lung would oblige.
"If you'd care to indulge me," the dragon continued smoothly, "Might I ask how you came to find my brother's gem and the Pantheon?" He had called Delmin to him and been found in an interdimensional rift, and he suspected Yu had been bonded to his host there as well. But travel to the Pantheon was limited these days, with the death of Universe and the loss of those pathways. So unless the night elf was native (something he thought unlikely), or had been here already, she had to have come through Yggdrasil, something Jin Huang had an interest in.Everyone seemed to be so curious about how she had gotten here, really. But then, a tall, purple-skinned elf did not really blend in the surroundings as being native to whatever world this was very well.
Perhaps this wondering and surprise had to do with the fact that she was unable to communicate back home at all.
"I was sent here to investigate things with my son where all those things started happening... Gehenna, I think Tian Yue called it ? I was separated from him and then... the sky was gone a few days later." She shook her head a bit, tossing bangs away from her silver eyes. "I landed quite a far bit away from here, and I tended to camps of survivors as I started to make my way down. As a healer, I cannot abandon those in needs, but at the same time I felt... called. Once I made it to the pantheon, I was given the gem by Lord Harmodius. He had been calling me... not quite ever since I made my way into this world. It started after things got better."Jin Huang nodded as she finished her recounting of her journey to the Pantheon. "That makes sense," he responded with a bit of a wry grin. "There was no one to gather the gems while Lord Harmodius was bound within the Chrysalis." He was prepared to elaborate on that point of either host or brother-dragon desired; but she had at least a passing familiarity with Gehenna, and so it was entirely possible that they already knew what had caused that crisis and what had befallen their Lord.
"Is there anything you would ask of me, then?" Normally, the offer would not have been extended; Jin Huang was, like his host, an intensely private person, but this was not just any god and host sitting in front of him! And after dealing with Tian Yue and Zhijian, it was interesting to be the erstwhile elder brother for a change."No one to gather to the gems... ?" The question escaped her before she could really think about it. But then, hadn't Tian Yue said something about that, too ? "You mean with his... name being taken ? Tian Yue tried to explain it to be, but..." She gave Jin an embarrassed smile. "It's a little... hard to understand. For me. A lot to try to understand at once." She probably did look a bit stupid with that admition, but really, she was still processing the existence of so many gods to begin with. This was really a lot to understand all at once.
Something had happened to Harmodius, that she could gather. And also that he was both, Creation and Destruction. But she had no idea it had been as dire, really, as the man before her was putting it.
It did look like Jin would get to play big brother, after all.
His question did made her a little uncomfortable - really, to ask something of him ? Illisia was quite used to doing things on her own, as well as being mostly self-dependent. But then... "You... wouldn't happen to have some maps ? Of the surroundings ?" Okay, now she even sounded embarrassed. "I am starting to know my way around, especially the forests... but the cities still confuse me a little. I get lost in them.""I also meant ask of me in the do you have any questions sense," he said lightly, smiling to take any sting out of his words. "But a map can certainly be arranged." Although there were no demons in immediate sight, all it took to summon one was a raised finger from the Dragon King. A whispered consultation later, and the demon was bowing it's way off again; no doubt to either find a map, or find someone to make one. "That shouldn't take long," he said, attention back on the elf. "If you'd like, I can attempt to explain what I know of Gehenna and the Crown?" It wasn't much; Jin Huang had been rather out of the loop for much of it, and there were occasionally gaping holes in his knowledge. Most of which had come from Phaedra, who was perhaps not the most unbiased source. It wasn't Jin Huang's fault that Illisia was a bit nervous, far from it. She just... was. It was odd, as if she felt like she had something to prove to the other dragon, but she wasn't exactly certain as to what.
"Ah, yes, of course. Thank you." She took a sip of water, realizing she'd all but forgotten about the glass at all. What is wrong ? Xun could very well tell that Illisia was nervous but... he couldn't even fathom just why.Nothing
"We would really appreciate that." She nodded. Maybe Xun would understand better than she would ?Jin Huang nodded carefully, noting the host's continued unease. It was making him a little tense, as he couldn't discern any reason for Illisia's nerves. Taking a sip of water, he began to speak of what he knew; the wounding of Kishara, Gaia, and the return of the Grigori. The change from Creation to Destruction, then the loss of even that much of their Lord. The dragon highlighted briefly the Weeks, explaining only a little of the lore and reason behind the Influences. Shifts in the explanations were punctuated by more water, glasses never left to become empty as attentive demons silently moved around the pair. One left a rolled map on the small table near Illisia as Jin Huang spoke of the search for Aritogeiton; or at least what he knew of it from his servant's part.
He did not dwell overlong on the hunt for the Manacles that had been undertaken with Phaedra, mentioning only that it had been successfully completed. The narrative trailed off shortly thereafter as the dragon let out a resigned sigh. "Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Ceremony of Rebirth that saw Creation reborn," Jin Huang said sadly to his brother. "And I have not been to the Pantheon since." Sitting back in his chair, he crooked one corner of his mouth upwards in what might have been a smile. "I hope, though, that what I know will prove helpful to you both."Both Illisia and the dragon lingering within her listened carefully to Jin's words, ears perked in focus. She could follow the dragon's sayings easily - she'd always been good at language, and was better in common than most of the night elves she'd known. He explained in a way that also made more sense than most explanations she'd gotten so far - as the dragon spoke of the attack against Gaia and Destruction, her hand gripped at the arm of her chair in a dead-grip, the hue of her skin fading lightly toward white. The elf never seemed to notice, and so it became apparent that the dragon within wasn't very happy about what he was being told. He'd known of the attack against their Lord, but not in such detail, not like this. And to think that when that happened - when this all went down... He had been nowhere. Nowhere at all, when he should have been there as well, at the very least supporting his brothers and caring for what could be cared for while the others fought tooth and claw against adversity. And instead he'd been... no where at all, one more question among so many. She did finally let go of her grip on the chair, but Illisia still listened with keen interest. That... she'd felt all of that, known of them, remembered them. Those waves. It was odd, at least, to be able to put a true source to what had killed so many. Her family, her friend, her people, so many. This was no fault of Jin, however, and she was careful not to shoot the messenger, so to speak. She didn't understand everything - couldn't even dream to, really, but this was the closest she'd gotten, as she listened and watched the map, the paths that had been taken.
"Im not sure I understand everything... But that cleared up a few things that I was confused about." She finally was able to offer Futs Lung a smile, but it faded quickly as she spoke a question that emerged in her mind. "But if these... Grigori want to destroy everything." She asked, shaking her head. "...What good would it do them ? Wouldn't everything be like the sky is now ? I mean... wouldn't they be dead, too ? If there's nothing else to exist in ?" What race sought their own end ? It made no sense, to her.Jin Huang could certainly relate to his brother's pain and shame at not having been there; he'd been, oh who knew anymore. Certainly not where he was supposed to be, a curious trait that remained in play even now. But he said nothing on that subject, not wanting to burden Illisia with such things. If it had been Shuo himself who sat in the chair opposite, well. Matters would have fallen out differently, no doubt.
"As to that, I have no idea how anyone can hope to profit from such an outcome," he replied with a rather severe frown, though not directed at his brother's host. "It seems utterly futile." The dragon shrugged one shoulder then, as if dismissing the Grigori. "But then, if I could understand their motives, it would be much easier to figure out how to defeat them."She couldn't help but agree with that. "Knowing your enemy is the first step to defeating them." And she seemed to know what she was talking about. But in a way, she also wasn't. She'd fought orcs, and she'd fought demons - she'd fought wars that seemed lost ahead of time, and yet still sat there, still fidgeting a bit in the chair she was sitting at, a very visible gem in her arm.
"...Ill have to see if I can find something." It was hard to say if it was something she meant for herself, or if she was relaying Xun's thoughts on the matter.Jin Huang chuckled softly. "We all need to figure this out, and not as haphazardly as we have been." A slow shake of his head indicated the dragon's disgust at the rather shoddy way everyone was going about things at the moment. Then again, it was as though everyone was trying to regain their balance after having saved the world.
On the other hand, it wasn't like that was all anyone had needed to do, and Jin Huang felt the p***k of conscience at the knowledge that he hadn't exactly been doing his best recently either. With a soft sigh, he looked at Illisia intently, his gold ringed blue eyes seeming to be peering through and seeing the dragon she carried. "Remember, you're not alone. Neither of you are. If you need help, need anything...Well. Simply ask, and I'm sure someone would be eager to help." Ah, siblings. His eyes really caught her attention at that moment - she hadn't really noticed before. They were... really different. It wasn't a bad different, really - more-so-intriguing - and she nodded along. "Thank you. It is good to know."
I won't fail you. I won't fail you all. She wanted to say, but the words didn't want to come out. Maybe it was for the best.
"Thank you." Had she said it before ? She couldn't remember. Didn't hurt to repeat it, right ?"It's what we're here for," he said with a smile dancing around the corners of his mouth. At least, that was what the Kings were for, amongst themselves. Supporting each other, to better support the Crown. Weaken one, and all were diminished.
Waving a hand in light dismissal of her repeated thanks, Jin Huang looks mildly discomfited for the first time since she'd arrived. "You have the map? Ah, there," he said, spotting it, spinning his water glass about in his hand. "Was there anything else you needed?"
Ah. He simply wasn't sure how to end the meeting.Illisia finished her own glass of water, gently setting it back on the table.
"No... I don't think so." There would probably be more, later on - for now, however, the night elf and the dragon she bore had much to think about.
"I think I can find my way back to the pantheon from here." The woman said, inclining her head slightly. Even if not, well, it wasn't like sleeping in the woods was ever anything that scared her."It's not far," he replied. "But my perception of distance may be slightly skewed, as I tend to ride to the Pantheon, not walk." Jin Huang stood and bowed slightly to the woman bearing the gem of his brother; he had respect for those chosen to sacrifice themselves, and even greater for the hosts of his siblings.
"You are, both of you, always welcome here."

...||No One Saw That~ Enekpe raced down the Pantheon stairs with a clattering of her two front hooves, occasionally leaping over a stair or two completely; something that, it turned out, was not a brilliant idea. Having hooves in front and paws in back could sometimes lead to traction problems, which could in turn lead to falling, especially on smooth surfaces - linoleum, ice, and, as it happened, stone. The little pooka slipped and fell, and went tumbling head-over-heels down what remained of the stairs. She continued to roll for a couple of feet once she hit the bottom, until she finally slid to a stop. A slow clap began as soon as the pooka had landed safely. "I assume such a show of acrobatics was not for my benefit?" came a reply on the heels of the applause, sounding rather amused. The speaker evidently was taking it on faith that, despite appearances, Enekpe could understand and reply to his speech. Jin Huang strode over to the pooka, tail flicking idly from side to side as he stopped by her side. The dragon's elegantly tailored clothing rustled when he knelt, peering at the pooka carefully.
"Are you quite alright, though?"Enekpe would probably have just laid there for awhile, but at the sound of applause, she raised her head to see just who had witnessed her graceful descent; fortunately, she wasn't easily embarrassed, and simply took it in stride. Head still spinning, she blinked her amber eyes until the tailed man came into focus. "I think so," she answered, proceeding to perform a cursory check of herself to make sure of that assumption. She had all her pieces, k**e included, so...no harm done! Jin Huang watched as she checked herself over, not bothering to hide his definite amusement. She was rather (and this pained him to think it) cute, so surely she must be...ah. His sharp eyes caught the telltale gleam of a gem set into her tiny chest. "That is good to hear," he intoned gravely. "It would not do for harm to befall one in these halls. Especially one chosen to bear a god," the dragon finished. He bowed his head to the little pooka then, a gesture of respect to both her and her diety.
"I am Jin Huang, the Dragon King Futs Lung," he introduced himself, standing after a moment. It might be easier to talk to her at that level, but it was damned uncomfortable for his knees!"Really?" The little creature tilted her head curiously. "You're a lot smaller than Tian Yue!" En didn't mind when he decided to stand; she was quite used to talking to people from way down here. The easiest was when someone sat, or - better yet - picked her up, but she was okay with talking up at the god. "I'm Enekpe," she said, "And she's Kikechum, Goddess of Animals." "I...what?" he replied, looking slightly bemused. "I suppose I am." Jin Huang made a movement towards the nearby raised platform, then stopped. "Would it be easier if I carried you?" he asked politely. Apparently he wanted to speak further with the pooka, as well as being rather stuffily courteous.
"A pleasure to meet you both." He nodded his head once more and privately considered that the goddess had chosen a rather apt host for her rebirth."Yes," she confirmed immediately, with a wag of her short tail. Not only was it easier, she liked being carried, because she liked to be close to people. And besides, once someone had picked her up, it followed that they would probably pet her, as well. How could anyone not pet something so cute? "He almost squished me," Enekpe then continued on the subject of the larger Dragon, "But he saw me." A pause. "I'm not sure how." Maybe because his eyes were big too, so they saw more? Hmm. As soon as permission was granted, Jin Huang easily but carefully picked the small pooka up. It was only a few strides for the dragon to reach the platform he'd been moving towards, and Enekpe was deposited there with only a quick, reassuring, pat on the head. It seemed that this dragon was not to be counted on for pettings.
"He's very good at seeing things," Jin Huang said thoughtfully, looking down at the creature next to him. It did seem rather improbable that Tian Yue had been able to spot such a small thing in his much larger dragon form (which had to be what she was speaking of), but it had clearly happened, and that was that. "Even very small things," he added in a lighter tone, a quick grin flashing across his face.
"Have you been long at the Pantheon?" the dragon asked, politely curious. He had been coming here more regularly of late, but the pooka was someone entirely new to him. Not that that meant much, of course. That was...that never happened! He didn't pet her! Not really, anyway. She was visibly disappointed, her frayed ears falling sadly. Maybe he just hadn't realized that she wanted to be petted? Trying for a more subtle approach, she bent her head and scratched an ear with one of her hind paws. Usually when someone saw her scratch an itch, they took it upon themselves to help. "A few days," she said, "I think. Something like that." She didn't really pay much attention. Jin Huang rippled a shrug at her uncertainty regarding the nature of time. It wasn't really something he was overly concerned about, simply one of a limited number of topics he could think of to engage in polite conversation about. "Are you sure you're alright?" he asked once he saw En begin to scratch at her ear.
Failure to get a clue, check."I itch," she answered, simply and plaintively. Not that she really did, but...well, now that she was thinking about it, it sort of made her itch! Haha. "Oh," he said simply, before reaching a hand over to the pooka. "If you don't mind?" Jin Huang asked dryly as he flexed his fingers for a moment to show off the almost claw-like fingernails. "I think I might be able to be of some assitance."Hooray! Jin Huang took the hint at last, and Enekpe replied with an obviously delighted, "Of course not!" And it looked like he had really good fingers for scratching, too! The pooka tilted her head to offer him the supposedly-itchy spot. "I love a good scratch." Maybe making that known too would prompt him to keep scratching rather than give her just a brief scritch. Jin Huang obligingly lowered his hand and began to scratch at the spot, carefully moderating the pressure.
"So does one of my brothers," he replied musingly. "He can get rather insistent about it," the dragon continued with a short laugh. The pooka's eyes slid half-closed in bliss, and she sighed with obvious contentment. Ooh, he really was good at that! "Is he another dragon, your brother?" "Mmm, yes. All of my siblings are Dragons." He looked thoughtful again for a moment, though was careful to keep up the scratching. Zhijian had him rather well trained; didn't matter what you were doing, a free hand was for petting.
"Most of them are larger than me," he added after a moment. Actually, all of them were, save Xia Lu Ling. It was a fact that only occasionally rankled, as he'd had a very long time to get used to the whole thing.Enekpe giggled, but her response was sympathetic, "I know how that is. Everyone's bigger than me. It's really inconvenient sometimes. Do they step on you?" "Only accidentally," he replied. And not recently, either; a brief memory of profuse apologies following one such incident in his past had flickered across the dragon's mind's eye at the pooka's question, though he was unable to tell precisely just which of his larger brothers had been so absent-minded.
"I would hope that no one has stepped on you..?""Not for awhile, but it happens sometimes. People trip over little things." She'd never had anyone intentionally step on her, but like most any housepet, she was occasionally subject to being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as it were. "Especially in the kitchen." Of course, En was somewhat at fault then - she knew it was a hazard, but...food! "They just need to learn to look down every once in a while," he intoned gravely, though with a bit of a sparkle of amusement in his eyes. "People so rarely pay attention to anything not directly in front of them.""Yes!" En agreed, so very glad to have met someone who seemed to understand the trials of being small. "No one ever pays attention until I talk, and sometimes they even look around for someone else. Just because I'm a pet!" Jin Huang looked momentarily astonished. "Are you really?" It seemed strange to him that someone would make a sentient, speaking species into a pet, though perhaps En's race was unsuited to caring for themselves. Which was not outside the realm of possibility. "Well, even if you were a pet, they should still pay better attention." He smiled. "I suppose they simply find themselves doubting their senses.""Yep!" she confirmed, blissfully unaware that there was anything strange about having been kept as a pet. She did feel vindicated, though, when he said they should pay better attention to her. "Hm, I guess so. It is weird to hear someone talking when you don't know where they are..." En had been a little confused at first when k**e had started talkign to her. "Well, that's certainly true enough," he said consideringly; Delmin had certainly been jumpy at first. Most people truly weren't accustomed to hearing voices, as it were.
"Your pardon, Enekpe," Jin Huang said with one last scratch of the pooka's head. "I have tasks to attend to." He stood, somewhat regretfully. It was nice to sit and do nothing of major import for a while, but the press of duties would ever beckon this dragon away from such indulgences.

...||The Game Resumed It hadn't been very difficult for Phaedra to divine Jin Huang's location - a few well-oiled palms here and there assured a steady stream of information coming to the goddess' ears. Everything and anything relating to the other deities, whatever information she might find useful now or in the future, paid for richly from Greed's own hands. It might be only a beginner's play, but setting up stock for the future could never hurt. Anyway, such things were harmless... until they suddenly weren't, and by that point Phaedra was probably within striking distance anyway.
While finding him hadn't been her sole intention, knowledge of the Dragon's residence had been an irresistible temptation to Phaedra. The goddess rode out, leaving Avita behind; such sport was not for servants, but for her and her alone. Vekhal carried her along the roads, the qilin moving swift and sure, soft ebony skin rippling over her wiry muscles.
She left the qilin behind before the final approach, trusting in her own speed and agility rather than that of her mount. The creature would return to her at her call, she knew. The Dragon King's home was simple to find, lit up and guarded as it was.
Of course there are guards; of course they are demons. Ah, Jin. Phaedra grinned from her position behind a partially-broken wall. It felt like old times again, even if this wasn't their Lord's property. Truly, she had no particular target in mind today - whatever he had, she supposed.
Provided she could get in.
The goddess was glad in tight-fitting clothing, befitting a thief; her usual finery was unsuited, and all her jewels had been removed save her own, still winking golden in her eye socket. Her tail twitched lightly back and forth as she watched, trying to get a feel for guards, patrols, security. Thievery was not her domain, but it was a tool she could use as well as any mortal.
Or had been able to use.
Picking her moment, the goddess darted towards the house, aiming for a likely window. There were few enough guards on patrol these days; to the demons, the major threat to Jin Huang had been dealt with some weeks before, and so the few who remained on duty were largely ineffectual. Besides - to get at anything of true value, a thief would have to sneak through the house, which was filled with demons. This was enough for them at the moment. Likely their Lord would have much to say on the subject, but he appeared to be content with their security measures so far. Phaedra would have an easy time gaining access to a window. Once inside, however... A ring of startled demons stared at her for a long moment before one reacted, drawing a sword on the Goddess. "There'd better be a good explanation," he remarked easily, as if confident that he would not be receiving one. His sword never wavered as he held it out, waiting for Phaedra's response. The external patrols and the window had proved no obstacle at all - however, the internal patrols were another matter altogether. Phaedra frowned inwardly at how rapidly she'd been surrounded; it was true this was her first attempt in really stealing anything since her rebirth, at least unaided. She'd had a great deal of help with logistics in Achai, after all.
But being caught didn't have to be a permanent state of affairs. "Ah, is this not the entrance?" she said, affecting a look of wide-eyed concern and tilting her ears back artistically. "I heard a god lived here, I... I wanted to offer tribute... a gift..." She unfolded her fingers to reveal a truly remarkable gem, a great ruby with a living flame blazing within it, an infernal treasure. As she did so, she extended her power, curling lightly around those gathered there.
"I only seek the god," she said, plaintively, and exerted her will. Go, all of you - there are things you want very much, very badly indeed. Go and find them. Go and do them - and leave this little one alone! The other demons milled about and looked confused before they dispersed; the one holding the sword lowered for a moment before shaking his head and snapping it back up and glaring a bit at his departing associates. "There's a door. That was a window," he said in reply, narrowing his eyes at the intruder. "And if you really want to find the god," he continued, smiling somewhat nastily while ignoring the rather impressive gem she presented, "Come on then." He jerked his sword towards a dimly made out staircase behind him. Apparently, what this demon really really wanted was to take Phaedra to Jin Huang. Phaedra grinned inwardly as the other demons drifted away - yet this one was stubborn, fighting her. What a remarkably boring desire. There would have been a time when she could have told him what she wanted him to desire... but as of yet, her power could not reach that far.
Other methods would be required. The goddess' gaze hadn't missed the staircase leading down from this room; with the guard so heavy (and trying to lead her away!) it was currently her top target. Even if she got nothing, she at least wanted to lay a finger on the door...
"I'm sorry, I meant no harm, sir, I - oh..." Phaedra's 'panicked' babbling cut short as she dropped the gem, sending it bouncing towards the staircase and down, its light brilliantly reflecting against every bright surface. "My tribute...!" she cried, taking a single step forward and holding out one hand, fingers spread. Not following it, but...
As she did so, she continued to exert her power, focusing it all on the single demon. Surely there must be something. Something you want. Something you want more than petty service. No creature is without vice. Yet was it in her power to find that weakness...?As the gem dropped, the demon's eyes flickered away from the goddess, watching it's hypnotic sparkle send shafts of light everywhere. He was distracted by it, and all his determination to take this interloper before Jin Huang poured away like water. The sword dropped with a clatter to the floor, and the demon dropped as well, to hands and knees, scrabbling after the still falling gem, his red har carelessly umbling over hs shoulders -- Jin Huang had been on his way downstairs when he heard the noise of a sword falling. He did not hurry to the sound, finishing his descent from the upper floor idly, trusting to his guards to take care of whatever was going on. The silhouette of the dragon was visible where once there had been stairs, though he could not yet see who was in the den.Ah, yesssss. Better luck next time, my dear Dragon.
The goddess' ears flicked up slightly as she heard the sound of footsteps above, on the stairs. Of course, her plan of investigating what was on the floor below was rather undercut by her having sent the demon in that direction, too... oh well. This would do well enough as a suitable entrance.
Grinning, Phaedra swept out into the hallway; her grin widened as she confirmed it was in fact the Dragon King coming down the stairs. "Oh, good afternoon, Jin Huang," she said, pertly, tilting her head to one side as if she'd run into him in a busy street, rather than sneaking into his house. "Would you care to direct me to your treasure-vaults? I seem to have gotten past your guard, you see. It wasn't very exciting," she added, raising one eyebrow at him."Phaedra," Jin Huang replied, arching an eyebrow at the goddess in return. "If I'd known you were coming, I'd have arranged for a more suitable welcome," he continued, sweeping a shallow bow to her that managed to be both mocking and respectful.
As he straightened, he made a small hand gesture, indicating that one of the demons hovering behind him should go check on things, just in case. The demon in question moved past both deities, nodding politely at Phaedra as he passed. "You will, I hope, forgive me for the lack?" the dragon asked, looking mostly serious and only faintly amused. Similar situations had been played out innumerable times in the past, though no specific one came to his mind, only a sense of having moved through the paces of this dance before."Oh, I suppose I must. It got me to your treas- your presence faster, did it not?" she said, slyly. In truth, she was grateful he'd been relatively unprepared; it would have been so embarrassing had she been properly caught the first time, and she was out of practice.
Not that she'd ever admit that.
"I expect more next time, of course, and the time after that," she added, waving one hand almost dismissively, then grinning at the Dragon King. "I am glad to see you remember, my dear Dragon. So much else has been lost, you see. I ought not have been so concerned.""Indeed," he returned dryly. "Perhaps next time will be even quicker." And there would be a next time; it was entirely fitting for Greed to try and steal from the Treasurer, after all. There was challenge there, or had been in days of old, and the dragon found his mind wandering briefly into plans for security measures before he recalled himself and his guest. Any lapse in his attentiveness would be exploited, and the best he could hope for was playful menace in the act.
"Forgetting you would have been a tragedy." He smiled then, genuine for all of the occasionaly sharper edged comments they exchanged. "And placed me at a rather sharp disadvantage." Echoing her dismissive hand wave, Jin Huang looked at her for a moment before making a decision. "Lest you find my behavior as a host as lacking as my defenses, would you perhaps care for a small tour of the house? Barring, of course, the vault." There wouldn't be much to give away to Phaedra; already the plans for the out-buildings were moving apace, and there would only be the one, rather small, vault within the main house. The goddess pouted at that last, her face taking on an expression of feigned innocence. "Do you not trust me, Jin Huang?"
She held the look for a few seconds before laughing, letting the mask of innocence dissolve into her usual sly demeanor. "I will find it soon enough, whether you will or no. You know that. Strange, though..." Phaedra took a step back and glanced at their surroundings. "I would not have placed you in so... plain... a dwelling. Do your cleaning-demons wear maids' clothing, your kitchen-demons don aprons?"He laughed as well, shaking his head briefly in amusement. "Trust you? I would hope I'd never be so foolish as to trust you to be anything other than yourself," Jin Huang replied, fairly certain that the goddess would take no offense at the remark.
"Ah, well, all I can do is delay that as much as possible," he continued, turning his back on Phaedra (what was that about trust, again?), though the other demon who stood attendance kept his attention on her as the Dragon King made his way back down the hall to the stairs. "Plain?" he echoed back, resting one hand on the banister. "Compared to anything I had before the Fading, I suppose it must seem so. On the other hand, even this much is the height of luxury when contrasted with Gehenna." He shrugged one shoulder, only slightly stung by her remarks. There was a measure of truth within them, however extenuating the circumstances. "Luxuries are hard to come by, even for me," he added, ascending the spiral stairs to the upper floor."Oh, of course not," the goddess agreed merrily, following the Dragon King as he began to ascend the stairs. "You know better, don't you? Yet here I am, and you're turning your back to me..." Phaedra grinned, though she made no move to take advantage of the fact. "Trust or no, the game's still played."
"I suppose it is better than ruins," she added, with a sigh, picking at the banister with one claw. "But it is ever so... domestic. Shall I fetch you your slippers and newspaper?"He made no reply to the comment, reaching the top of the stairs and opening the first door on the right. Jin Huang waved a hand, indicating that Phaedra should precede him. Perhaps the remark about trust had struck home?
The room was mostly empty, but as the lights came up, the richness of the decor was evident. The room fairly glowed golden, wooden walls and floor polished to a high sheen. Two bookcases and a desk sat against the far wall; the desk showed signs of use, papers stacked neatly on it's surface. The bookcases were mostly filled, spines on the book smooth and well worn. To the left was an arched doorway, with a curtain half drawn back to reveal a darker toned room beyond. "It may seem domestic," he said quietly, coming in behind her, "But this place is not intended as a temple, or indeed a Treasury like those I had in my care in the past."
He shook his head, looking faintly amused. "No, this is mostly for the benefit of my retainers. They lost their home when the Planes collapsed, though it is also how they came to find me. So the demons have built themselves a new home; this is merely the start of it." A hand waved out towards the empty land beyond this house. "They have plans for a grand estate. I go along because it costs me little and gains me much." Another grin cracked the stoic facade.
"I would not ask such of you, but how are you at baking? A pie, perhaps?" He laughed and shook his head again. "No? Would you care for something to drink, at least? Truth be told, there is not much to show off. There is my set of rooms, and across the hall are accommodations for those demons who wish to live here, as well as my Aoide. You saw most of the lower floor, a private area and public for visitors. There are kitchens and a dining hall as well." Jin Huang shrugged. "Very plain indeed.""I might bake the souls of men in the fires of hell, when they die in thrall; is that a pretty enough dish for you, Jin Huang?" Phaedra tilted her head to one side, all innocence. "I am told by my demon friends that their screams make heady fare."
Still, despite her cheerful nonchalance, the goddess had to admit she was a trifle jealous of the Dragon King's enclave. For all that she had her chambers at the Pantheon, that small Labyrinth was beginning to feel restrictive, like a child's bedroom when the child has nearly grown. "It is well-appointed," she said, after a moment spent surveying her surroundings. "I always knew you had excellent taste. Do you offer consultations?""I prefer my fare to be a little more substantial." The grin turned sharp-edged for a moment before fading back to one of genial affability and amusement. "But I have no doubt that if you were to turn your hand to such craft, it would be something to be fought over."
A somewhat proprietorially pleased glance around the room followed Phaedra's comment. It really was rather nice, after all. There were still things to be done, but all of the construction was being done in stages, which meant that everything tended to look finished. For a given value of finished, perhaps, but the overall effect remained something the dragon was proud of. "I don't. I would offer to introduce you to those who did design most of the decor, only I would not like to lose their services to you." He paused. "I will rely the compliment, however."
"Keeping secrets, are we?" Phaedra purred, circling the Dragon King, letting the tip of her tail just brush at the backs of his knees. "Doing such in my presence is either very brave or very foolish. Do you delight in tempting me, noble dragon?"
"Neither," he said, remaining still while she circled him, though the steady tick of his tail betrayed some level of nervousness. "I am no thrill-seeker, taking risks just for the sport of the game." He raised one eyebrow as she came full circle, golden rimmed blue eyes sardonically amused.
"As I said earlier, I trust you only to be yourself, and as you have found something you want, well." Another pause, accompanied by a short laugh. "It is simply prudence on my part to keep that which I desire to remain mine from your sight or grasp."
"Which simply tempts me further," Phaedra sighed. "To walk up and take something is no challenge at all. To fight for it with tooth and claw, to wrest it triumphantly after bringing your opponent down, to lay out and execute a beautifully-scripted plan... there's true delight." She ended the word with a purr that, itself, flowed into a light (but never gentle) laugh.
"Hence our games, dear dragon. For who knows more of guarding treasures than you? Or who did, perhaps? I entered with relative ease, and here I am merely a mewling babe compared to my ancient strength." She sighed and affected a bored stance. "So are we all, I suppose, and yet... ah, I craved more."
The dragon listened, amused to hear her lay out the bones of their long relationship in such terms. "Oh, I know. And who better to test my ingenuity against than you, dear lady? We may yet be young and lacking our ancient strength, but would it be any fun at all to match yourself as you are now against Futs Lung of old? I daresay the reverse would not be as enjoyable either."
Equal footing, that was the key. Oh, there was something to be said for a challenge, and indeed Greed had just claimed satisfaction with that very thing, and yet...And yet, an impossible challenge would bring nothing but frustration.
Which would, of course, not end well for anyone.
"Have you gone soft then, old... hmm. 'Friend' is not right; 'enemy', laughable. Congenial adversary... better, but a bit overwrought." She tapped one golden claw against her own cheek. "But we are none of us what we once were... good. The same thing, forever, is so hideously dull... though I do hope you obtain a more suitable dwelling soon. These 'modern' buildings are rather hideously dull themselves." She heaved an exaggerated sigh, as if there was simply no hope for suburbia. Which was probably true.
His shoulders rippled in a shrug. "Perhaps I have simply become more cautious." And that was, perhaps, no bad thing to be in this Age. Then again, he had probably always been more conservative in his outlook.
"Oh, agreed. These buildings are pedestrian, though they serve their purpose well enough for the moment." Another shrug. "I will endeavor to locate more suitable quarters, believe me." Boxy houses, all the same, with no sense of history or grandeur. Hardly appealing at all.
"Caution? Bah." Phaedra made a dismissive gesture. "So, my dear Jin Huang... what delights have you been hunched over in this cave of yours? What troubles Futs Lung in these slightly less troubled times?" She shifted to lean against him lightly, casually, as she might lean on a wall.
A wry twist to his mouth was briefly visible at Phaedra's casual dismissal of his tendency towards caution, but it quickly disappeared as he stiffened at her unexpected movement. "Ah," he said while trying to relax; the amount of poking at his ego that would likely occur shortly making this more difficult than normal. "Primarily the Grigori," he finally replied in what was probably an overly controlled voice.
Insufferable woman!
Phaedra raised one eyebrow again, this time in surprise rather than deliberate baiting. "A heady topic, and not one given to levity," she said, after a moment. "Of course they yet live, or exist, or whatever it is they do... and as they do so, they detest All, for it is not the End they so ardently desired." Her tail whipped back and forth a few times with unease. "Has the Twin Crown laid this onus on you, or do you simply... anticipate?"
"I anticipate. We have been given an incredible gift of time, and it is being squandered by those who should know better." Jin Huang's voice had dropped into quite a low growl by the time he reached the end of his statement. Indeed, where Phaedra's tail was lashing with unease, his was metronome steady with what was clearly irritation - or anger.
"Forgive me," he said after a moment. "I seem to have pressed my own buttons rather strongly."
