Kindra bristled but saw the sense in the older rider's words and she stepped aside to allow him to move off in front of her, she was glad that he picked the knife up and held it, she had no more knowledge of how to fight with one than he did but she figured she might be able to do enough damage to deter an attacker. She was a little annoyed that she was being treated like a weak child but she did see sense in hanging back, just because there was one knife dropped, didn't mean that the owner of the moans didn't have another.

"I said it might be a person" Brynja pointed out, leaning to get a good look at the knife. Oh, ick! They must have done pretty good to get rid of all those tunnelsnakes, though. "How badly d'you think they're hurt?" She was just as anxious to get moving as the others seemed to be, because there obviously was someone hurt down there who probably needed help.

Larth pointed out to the group at large, one forepaw scraping the ground. Sure, finding someone in need was good... and the praise for finding them first was just as sweet, right? go!>

((Everyone roll one d100!))

N'mol frowned as the knife became an issue, and listened to each person in the group in turn. K'en's reaction wasn't much of a surprise-- N'mol agreed, they should hurry if this person was still intent on causing whatever mischief they had been about-- but Nyosh's announcement that there was also human blood on the blade was chilling. So soon after Kestril's murder...

He nodded when F'itz suggested Kindra stay back. It wouldn't be smart to come this far only to get one of their Goldriders killed. Although he didn't move to reclaim the hold she'd had on him, he kept himself close. Whose blood was on that knife, then? Was it the owner's? Or someone else's?

"If that blood on the knife isn't theirs, I'm more concerned about how badly they've hurt someone else," N'mol replied to Brynja, watching F'itz retrieve the knife and take point. If nothing else, at least now they had proof that they weren't just wandering in the dark for nothing. An extra weapon would be good as well.

N'mol's countenance as they restarted their journey down the hall was unusually serious. What foul play had they stumbled upon?

Kindra followed close behind F'itz, she had all but forgotten her plan to flirt with N'mol and/or K'en now, her thoughts turned onto revenge, if this was a killer injured, then she'd made damn sure he was going to get mire injuries, if it turned out to be a victim of a knifeweilder, then she'd be doubly out for revenge. Now she was Goldrider she figured it was her duty to see this through to the end and make sure that the weyr was fully informed. That meant she had to shake this brashness, the implusive rushing in and think level headedly.

She shuddered once then straightened up, moving further along the hallway and past the tunnelsnakes, keeping her feet well out of the way of their remains, she didn't want to ruin her soft sandals. She pulled her robe closer around her and suddenly realised..... she was about to face the unknown in her bedclothes.... with just the thick robe to keep everyone from seeing them. She would just DIE of embarrassment if they saw what she wore underneath the robe, not that it was particularly horrid, nothing she owned wasn't lovely.... but it clinged to her and was rather thin.

Human blood? Dinahsk whuffled at the knife as well, before F'itz took it, to smell what the older wher had. Tunnelsnakes and...yes, person! She clicked her curiosity at the other green, quite excited by this latest discovery, and was just as excited to get to be out in front of the group. They were doing real-work, not practice-work!

Her handler, while intrigued, was not excited. Chopped-up tunnelsnakes, human blood...had someone gotten into a fight with the creatures, or was there another reason? Whatever it was, it couldn't be a good one. Regardless, they took point willingly.

Maybe these young riders would learn some appreciation for the so-called 'lesser' cousins of their dragons. Not likely, she thought, but it would be nice.

K'en gave a small nod to Dezima's question. "I'm fine." He hadn't fallen on his face or stabbed himself with the knife or anything, so there really wasn't much to be concerned about. The confirmation by the wherhandler that the knife also held human blood though was only more proof in his mind that someone was hurt.

Until N'mol said it, K'en hadn't quite considered that the blood on the blade might not belong to the knife's owner. If that was the case... had the owner been attacking someone before being ambushed by tunnelsnakes? Or had something else happened? Regardless, he was glad when they resumed moving again, despite the increasing tensions within the group.

The group fell into relative silence as they followed the now-armed F'itz around the corners of the hall. As they passed by a window that looked out into the dark Weyrbowl, K'en realized that it showed a rather different angle than he was used to. The group had managed to loop a goodly way around the weyr during their travels and were now very close to the main entrance of Benden. Whoever they were chasing was trying to escape the weyr! Had the human blood been from another foiled murder attempt? If that was the case, then what was making that desperate-- and for the moment absent-- moaning sound?

Nyosh nodded to F’tiz. She would take point. With Dinah’s wher still being a youngling, she left the choice to her if she wanted to be point or not. Quickly she led Nyossk to the front and started toward the sounds. Even as she watched the wher closely for signs they were getting close, Nyosh kept an ear on the soft conversation behind her. Privately she thought whoever had used the knife had been hurt by the tunnel snakes. That didn’t absolutely rule out an attack, so she said nothing.

When Dinah and her wher joined them up front, Nyosh smiled. “You’ll be way ahead of your group by the time this is over.” She gave a fond look at the young green.

Nyossk trilled at Dinahsk. Would she remember the smell? They didn’t often smell it like this. She tcked confidently as the green joined her at the front of the group.

The group continued on at a good clip, intent now to figure out this mystery once and for all. It was only by chance that K'en glanced out the window as they passed, and he found the view to be one that he didn't see very often. Wow, had they traveled that far from their rooms in this search? "Is this... the front of the Weyr?" he asked to the group at large, trying to make out what he could of the dark Weyrbowl outside the window. They were nearing the entrance then? That couldn't be a good sign.

Seems that someone is trying to flee, Stromath agreed, having been following the train of thoughts in his rider's mind. We must step-up our pace a bit.

But why would someone injured be trying to flee the Weyr? ... Unless the knife's owner really had injured another ad was fleeing now for his own life. Not good.

"Shells," F'itz muttered under his breath, squinting out of the window in the vain hope of seeing a shadowy figure making a break for freedom, or some other clue as to what was going on.... No, from here he could make out precisely nothing.

"Let's go." If there was a criminal sneaking around who could yet have left dismembered bodies scattered in dark corners of the Weyr he was not going to be the rider who let them escape, his sense of duty simply wouldn't suffer such a failure. Without waiting to see if the others would follow or not he strode onward, gripping the knife tightly.

Up on his ledge Brumath peered down into the weyrbowl, eyes gleaming whiter than fresh snow. Danger here, and he had sent His into it.

F'itz asked rhetorically.

F'itz replied firmly,

K'en and Stromath didn't need telling twice and followed directly after the brownrider as he strode forward. Time was clearly of the essence here, so it was best not to delay.
