After the gold had chased T'rel off of the sands, she seemed much more impatient to find hers. She went through the boys', almost smugly. As if she was mocking them. They could never have the wonder that she was. Weren't they envious! Oh, how beautiful, how cunning and intelligent she was! She swiped a claw at one of the older male candidates, Jalen, rearing on her hind legs. He was not admiring her! What was he doing?! She moved closer to him, and gave a furious bellow.
That would show him for not respecting those superior to him!
The gold hatching at last made her way to the female candidates, and sat in front of them. She seemed to be studying each one carefully. She snorted once or twice, as if in laughter. No, no, these wouldn't do!
She moved in between two of them and shoved them aside with strong shoulders. Mine! Your Leith has come! You wait no longer. I have shown them their place, she seemed smug. Only you are for me. You are my Cami, and I am very hungry. They best have saved me some food. I will show them their places as well. She nuzzled the girl gently, looking up at her with absolute affection. She had shown the male candidates their place. She'd shown the Weyrleader his place. And now, she had shown Cami hers. It was beside Leith.

From rocking back and forth, Cami fell forward and stood up. Of course, the queen was still about. She couldn't count herself out of the running yet. She seemed to be quite the haughty little thing, but Cami supposed that must be only natural for golds, so big and so pretty they were. Cami never learned about position in the weyr, so she didn't understand how much of a covetous position that was. It wasn't that she held much hopes for herself, it was just, she thought, she had the same chance as any other girl!
So when the gold hatchling sat in front of them, and the other girls' eyes went wide. Cami smiled, stood on her toes, and gave a half-playful wave, as if to say 'don't forget about me!'. She never would have imagined the queen would actually come over, much less that she would hear the words in her head: Mine! Your Leith has come! You wait no longer.
"Leith?" she muttered. No, it couldn't be! And yet, the voice in her sounded as natural to her as if it had always been there. Cami never thought of herself as waitng. Only when Leith said it did she realize how much it was true. For so long, in that awful, oppressive place, she was waiting, waiting for something to happen to her, waiting for this.
A sudden swell of emotions rising, Cami half fell into the dragon, embracing her tightly around her strong neck. Oh Leith! This whole time I've felt like I was suffocating! I couldn't stay in that place any longer. Of course you couldn't, Cami. How would I have found you if you were there and not here?
When she looked up, the gold's eyes were swirling. I have shown them their place. Only you are for me. You are my Cami, and I am very hungry. They best have saved me some food. I will show them their places as well.

Though several of the people waiting in the stands were leaving; many of them having assumed that the remaining eggs were duds, a single, large egg, cracked neatly in the middle. A brown walked out of of the shell, prim and proper as can be. He walked as if he had already experienced everything there was to experience--and more.
He first examined the girls. He studied each with patience and kindness; none of that scorn his siblings had shown. He seemed to think all of them had potential--but these weren't his. These could be great, but--his--was even greater still. His--was the one. The brown made his way towards the male candidates carefully; this was no clumsy silly dragonet! This brown knew exactly what he was doing.
He'd been born to do this.
He studied each boy with the same patience and kindness he'd shown the girls. These were good; they could become great riders. But they weren't for him. Where was his? With absolute calmness, the brown continued his search. Until he bumped right into Ferrick. The scrawny fourteen year old fell to the ground, and the brown stepped over him.
Mine! I have found you at last. Why did you not come for me? You are lazy. You will know better in time than to wait for me to come to you. The brown paused and snorted, looking down at the boy. I am your Wanth, mine. We will be wise together, and save Pern from Thread.
