Apparently it was Ilmenite's turn to put his foot in his mouth. He stared, slack-jawed, at Zac for a very long moment, sorting through what he'd said in search of whatever had triggered that anger, and then the sorrow.
When he got it, he made a noise and reached down to grab his tape before shifting back into his own civilian clothes, torn at the knees and awkward, trailing a couple paces behind. "Goddamnit, Zac, you have a broken rib. This is stupid. I could have really hurt you."

"That was MY stupid fault..." He snapped glancing over his shoulder. "I just...arrrgh..." He crammed his hands deeper in his pockets and hunched his shoulders with a continued growl of frustration.
"Ok...be honest... is it JUST the rib or do you not think I'm cut out to train you to fight." He said turning and walking carefully backwards so he could look Ever in the face more or less, at least until he nearly ran into one of the public trash cans and opted to just pause for the answer.

"You're not allowed to be this insecure, damnit." Which wasn't an answer, and was decisively not an answer. Ever wasn't going to give into that kind of attitude; he folded his arms over his chest and frowned right back at Zac.
"We can wait if you want to wait until you're better, but I need to start going out again, and I just don't want to...to get my a** kicked." A moment's hesitation, tripping just a little over his words, "Or, or, you know, tied to a chair and have pieces cut off..."

"NOT...an answer." He scowled. "Do you -want- another General? Because I'm sure I can arrange one."
He bristled, hell yes he was taking this personally, Ever was the first person he had EVER personally brought into the negaverse. Everyone else he had been sent or asked for... Somehow the act of dragging him into this made it that much more frustrating.
"Hell I could PROBABLY have you sent over to Scheelite, he's even got green eyes!"

Ever tossed his hands up at that, not bristling but -- tensing, because damn, how was he even supposed to answer that? It made his movements twitchy and sharp, the back of his hand across his forehead.
It also left him, amazingly, tongue-tied for a surprisingly long moment, just digging around for something to appease Zac's insecurity. He fought to bring his own voice under control, so he wouldn't snap. "You're killing me, Zac."

"Not -yet- I'm not." He pivoted again and started walking.... well it was really more of a march, he made it about 5 steps before he turned and came back.
"You are the FIRST god damned person I brought into this... I am -trying-... I've done alright by EVERYONE else on my god forsaken team. I don't know what to DO with you... I ******** up...OK? I ******** up, I should have had someone with more experience bring you into this. If you WANT another god damned General or Captain just TELL me, I don't want you tied to a chair or cut to bits either, and if you think you stand a better chance with someone else ...TELL me. Survival is a LOT more important than my -stupid- EGO."
It probably wasn't fair to yell the last word but he did anyhow, jamming his arms strait at his sides with hands clenched, he even included a foot stomp, which on someone taller might just have looked pissy. On him it looked, well... petulant.

"Why are you...fine, okay." He dropped his own hands, drawing in a few breaths and rolling his eyes -- mostly to take the seriousness out of his words, to keep this from turning into a thing.
"I like you, Zac, so. Just cut it out." Ever shook his head, perhaps-deliberately dropping strands of hair into his face to obscure his features This was making him all tense and edgy, despite himself. Uncomfortable. "I don't want that. I just really don't...I just really don't want to get killed, and we shouldn't do this while you're hurt."

Zac pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering softly about a headache. "What does -like- have to do with it, like won't keep you alive... just..."
A long deep sigh and he stuffed hands back in his pockets.
"I can ask Faya, Selenite, ...Zirkon is kinda busy... Scheelite is probably good for teaching you to dodge if you want, not...being sarcastic or anything this time just... remember that he likes to aim for the face... If you have someone you think you'd like to start with while my -stupid- rib heals... let me know ok?"
It was...sort of apologetic in an 'not meeting your eyes' kind of way.
"You're still hurt too...you keep down playing the hands but if you knick a tendon your probably s**t out of Luck... I don't want... Look I'll take it easy if you will... don't.. don't make me try and teach you violin to keep your fingers stretched out either, grabbing bottles of booze is not an acceptable stretching exercise."
He was trying, awkwardly to restore what he'd just jammed a wedge in, or thought he had at the very least.

"...fine. Okay? We good then?" He wouldn't push again -- not when this was so obviously a genuine sore spot, when it made Zac about explode. He'd stick to the smaller ones. Ones that just made him wriggle.
Ever stepped in a pace and nodded down the street, shoulders rolling to settle his own jacket back down into place. "I'll walk you home. So go. It'll be fine."

"Peachy..." He sighed. "Sorry for yelling." He shrugged his shoulders a few times, not really adjusting his hoodie just...shrugging, still letting his eyes drift but not really picking any one thing or place to look at... well, until the offer was made to walk him home.
That kind of got a 'Funny' look, halfway between a scowl and suspicion. "...If you're still worried about the -rib-." He started but didn't finish, just gave up and started walking.

"I am." It was easy and unapologetic, his own hands finally disappearing down into his pockets as he fell in beside Zac. Too serious, and that seemed to be how they were, these days; Ever blew out a sigh, rolling his eyes again and watching Zac sideways.
"Anyway, I don't actually know where you live. Something about dorms, but the only dorms I ever saw were at Sovereign Heights, so..." It'd be interesting. And then he'd know where to find Zac, too. Fair was fair.

"You waited outside the gates for me once... that same night you don't remember." he said arching an eyebrow.
"And walking isn't going to break the rest of my rib cage... I could teleport too." He pointed out, but he didn't... nor did he make any real move to shake Ever.
Then he blinked and arched an eyebrow. "Or...did you just ... you know theirs a -gate- right? Hall monitors... its like a step down from military school... you're not going to be able to just... wander in to see my room... you know that right?"

Judging from the surprise on Ever's face -- no, he hadn't actually known that at all. He had little to no experience with the high schools in the area. He didn't usually follow teenagers home, didn't have any idea how all of that really worked. Vague reputations, maybe...
"Uh. But you can just go out at night?" He actually looked somewhat disappointed, making just a little face. He would have liked to see Zac's room.

"....Sort of..." he said shifting slightly. "...You...can sort of sneak in and out..."
He glanced at the look on Ever's face... surprise to disappointment. "Dude its a bare bones room, I get a foot locker... I'm not even sure how Dem got away with posters while he was there."
He rolled his eyes then and sighed. "We'll see... if they catch you I don't know you ok? I don't want to spend the week in the detention hall, the ones who know what locker I fit into are always there." He groused and then looked instantly regretful that he had admitted to fitting into ANY lockers.

As worldly as Ever was in some issues, there were others that just -- well, were entirely out of his league. Kids getting crammed into lockers was one of them. His expression went almost wondering, something like amazement touching his features at the comment.
"...you mean that...actually...happens?" It was slow and quiet and mostly to himself, though, and he immediately regretted spilling it. Zac was going to punch him. "Um. I mean. I don't want to get you in trouble, don't worry...I can just go home."
