Have I been made fun of for being a reader? Heavens, yes. I've been mocked, shunned, I've even had a group of boys steal one of my books, rip the pages out, and throw the book back at me in grade 5. Our grade 9 english teacher made me stand up and told the whole class that I loved to read and if they needed any book suggestions to ask me. I sat down, face burning, and everyone was either staring at me in amusement or disgust. My school is nothing but spoiled, rich, uncultured white trash. Except my friends and I, of course. Thank god for them. biggrin

I've always been made fun of. Even my friends who read alot don't read as much as I do and they say, "Oh, look. Don't bug her now. She's pulled out her book!"

My classmates would say, "You're insane! How can you read that much?...I only read like, my school books for my assignments." Or "You started that book this morning? And you're almost done with it? You're crazy. Nobody reads that much!"

Yep. That's my story.

I've never really been picked on but less literate peers often ask me "Why do you read so much?", "how can you read all those books at the same time?, "Do you actually understand all that?", and the like.

I'v actually had a book I was reading stolen from me, because the other people around simply didn't get reading.

Never did get it back for that matter...

Up until I moved halfway through high school, I was heckled by alomst everyone, including a few teachers.

Like my fifth grade teacher claimed that I had been reading books that were inapropriate for someone reading at the fifth grade level (by the time I reached his class, I was already reading at a twelveth grade leve at leastl). He repeatedly took my books away and refused to give them back until speaking with my parents.

Then in eighth grade I had a teacher who, until a principle and two counsilors intervened, had refused to give my books back even after speaking with my parents (this same teacher thought that if a student had her, they were too stupid to go to college).

My classmates never gave me too much of a problem until middle school, I was smart and caused them to think that I was stupid so that the would leave me alone so that I could read in peace.

My family gets it, however, at family gatherings, I am the one typically reading a fantasy novel or historical fiction to my cousins' children with them hanging on every word I say. My cousins loan or give me books, while my aunts and uncles give me gift certificates and gift cards to various book stores.

Meh. My teachers snatch my books away from me when i'm reading, but that's cause it's normally during their boring lecture. >_>;;

I used to get teased a lot in Jr. High, but now if my friends catch me with a book in hand/reading during some gathering they either go:

{Friend: "What the hell is that?" -Snatches and looks at- "Nevermind" -Takes and continues to talk to me-

Me: @_@;;?? "Give me my d*mn book!"}

or

{Friend: "You nerd."

Me: XP "There's my *ss" -points- "Kiss it or hush up."}

It's not the teasing I mind so much as the ignorant Beevis laugh that precludes it.

"Huh huh huh, I wonder what would happen if we stole it from her..."

I actually jumped over a cafeteria booth and beat up a good friend of mine for stealing a book...my face turned red and I told them I hoped they rotted in hell. I wouldn't speak to them for the rest of the day.

I was talking to the French teacher, and she told me that she told the class to translate the sentence "Some of my favorite novels are ____" and fill in the blank. But nobody could, and one girl asked if Cosmo counted.

I hate my classmates so much.

People tell me that reading is just "extra work".
Though it's true(I get tired, after i read.).. I just enjoy it.
It's better than homework. 3nodding
Some teachers tell me to put my book away. ( I get pissed everytime they say that).

dang school
The only thing that i like from school is the library.

totally, all the time!! Everyone in my class has commented at least twice about my love of books, and some idiots like to amuse themselfs by stealing them, though i easily get them back with some sharp kicks and punching. Yes, I become violent when you take away my books. You don't want to see me go into withdrawal, wither. Not pretty.

Now because I get easily irritated and bad tempered when disturbed while reading, people generally know not to come around me when they see I'm with a book.
But I get jibes thrown my way, especially in my English class because I'm always carrying around a book or discussing about one with my teacher who fortunately is an even bigger bookworm. But I usually am so zoned out while reading that most times I don't hear them

I was never made fun of so much as considered an oddity. People seemed to love tracking how fast I'd finish a certain book (I finished gone with the wind in about two days) and they'd jibe me a little about that, but mostly it was just part of my personality. One of the guys I went to high school with that's in my Math 150 class now said something that perfectly explains how everybody always looked at me:
Robbie: So what did you get your boyfriend for Valentine's
Day?
Me: Oh, I got him his own copy of "Phantom" by Susan Kay. He's already read my copy three times in a row in the past week.
Robbie: O.O You two are a match made in heaven, aren't you?

People always like suggesting books for me to read next, lol.

I've never really gotten much stick for reading. People sometimes look at my book, look at me, remark on how long it is and ask me how long I've been reading it for and how far I've gotten in it. Then comes the amazement and the remark on how long it would take them to read a silmilar book.

When I was in grade school, people would time me to see how long it took me to read a page. ><

But honestly, I've not been picked on for reading since 8th grade.
