"In what universe can you make purchases with silverware anyway?" he laughed, returning his attention to the remaining eggs. "Anyway, it's not important." He dismissed the matter entirely, replacing all thoughts of the past with thoughts of delicious eggs. It proved to be a fine course of action, and he wondered why exactly he hadn't thought to do so earlier. Eggs weren't quite as amazing as bacon, but they were certainly amazing in their own right, especially when consumed in proximity with bacon.

Attempting not to giggle while eating was proving to be rather difficult, but thankfully she managed to succeed. Somehow. She finished her potatoes with a happy sigh and leaned back against the back of the booth. Time to relax and digest for a bit, so she pulled her mug of coffee over to take another sip, trying to make it last as long as possible.

"I don't know, not mine," she said with a chuckle before eying him carefully. "Are you sure? If you make more faces like that I'll have to think up more things to do with a spoon." Nothing inappropriate, of course. He didn't seem bothered by whatever it was anymore, or if he was he was hiding it quite well, but still... She was quite curious about what it was that had caused that momentary not-so-happy look.

His own plate cleared as well, he took the coffee cup into his hand. There was a little less than half remaining, it seemed, and he sipped at it leisurely. Food was goooood.

Lucas laughed, "Well, as horrifically unpleasant as death by spoon sounds, I'm not even really sure what face you're talking about to begin with." Another sip of coffee punctuated his thoughts. "I guess I'll be more careful about my expression, though?"

The mug was cradled in her hands as she took another slow sip, savoring the taste. Even if it wasn't as hot as it had been when they started, it was still delicious. Mmm, food.. It had been ages since she'd gone to a restaurant with someone. Actually.. probably not since she lived with her parents. That was... quite a long span of time.

And then he mentioned death by spoon and she almost choked on her coffee when she couldn't help but laugh at the statement. "I never mentioned death by spoon, so I don't know what you're talking about." She had more imagined a spoon slowly crawling and clinking across the table. "And why would you be careful about your expression?" Not like it would make much difference. So far today Lucas had been about as transparent as a brand new clear glass window.

"Aha, wrong conclusion, then?" he said, still grinning. "You have to admit, death by spoon is a pretty serious threat." Truly, it sounded highly unpleasant, to say the least. There were all kinds of ways a spoon could be used as a weapon, after all, and none of them struck as particularly comfortable.

Lucas raised his cup to his mouth again, and when it returned to the table, the amiable - perhaps even goofy - grin was perhaps a bit less sincere, his former air as a Galactic elite inadvertently overcoming his demeanor. "Because apparently my expression likes to give away thoughts that aren't even in my head." There was a subtle shift in his gaze that implied his steadfast intent to say no more on the matter.

"I'd say it's probably the most serious threat you could possibly make to anyone. I'd be horrified to die by way of spoon. Especially if there were more than one spoon," and as if to emphasize this point she pretended to shudder at the thought, then chuckled again.

Aha, there was that face again! Though it was more obvious this time, so she knew he was being serious. "Ah, I see..." She leaned forward and the spoon suddenly clinked across the table in front of him as she took another sip of her coffee. "So what do you want to talk about?" She asked, taking the unspoken hint that he wouldn't talk about this matter. The spoon clinked over to hide beneath the rim of his plate, and every so often it hopped up to go tink against the bottom-side of the plate while Claire innocently sipped her coffee that was held in her other hand.

He watched the creeping spoon in mild confusion and less mild amusement, a smile portraying the same emotions. "Well, though I hate to be the wet blanket, I'm actually on duty today," he said, eyeing the spoon's antics. "It's still early so they probably haven't noticed that I'm missing, but I'd really ought to get back to my post soon, I think." As if on cue, the waitress returned to clear away the dishes and deposit the bill.

Hmm, the spoon was definitely not very effective anymore, so she put it down with one last clink before she finished the rest of her coffee, in a curious sort of mood. At the mention of work, however, her eyes shot up. "Are you?" Oh geez, now she felt guilty. She shifted in her seat a bit and bit her bottom lip. "I'm sorry.. You won't get in trouble, will you?" As if he'd know the answer to that any better than her - but it'd be better all around if they could get back as soon as possible.

And then the waitress returned to take their plates, leaving a scrap of paper in their place. Claire leaned forward and pulled it close with one finger, looking for two or three specific things on it. A moment later it seemed she'd found them, and she pulled her wallet out of her coat pocket to count out enough to pay for her half. She spoke absently while focused on counting out enough cash. "If we get back to the car soon it won't take too long to get back, I don't think."

"Ah, no, it's just duty. They'll never know I was gone," he assured. Of course, he had no idea just how true that was, but he could always play it off as a bad case of the stomach flu or something. He was rarely assigned any important tasks anyway, with 'rarely' equating to 'never.'

He reached across the table and nicked the bill out of Claire's hand, simultaneously pulling his own wallet from his pocket. "On me," he said, selecting the necessary bills and leaving aside a tip. "Yeah, it shouldn't be too long heading back. Ready to head out?"

"Alright," she replied with a nod, hoping that was all it was. It would be awful if he got in trouble because of this, and it would make her feel horribly guilty. Thankfully she had another day off, and finally recalled she'd had plans for working on her left arm to strengthen it.

When Lucas took the paper from her she didn't pay it any mind, still peering into her wallet and about to pull her own bills out when he spoke, and it made her glance up with a surprised look on her face. "Huh?" She looked as though she'd never heard those words before in her life. He'd left more than enough to pay for himself, so... he was paying for her too? What? Just.. what? Her slight confusion in this matter distracted her enough to cause her to miss his last statement.

Claire's obvious confusion was met with confusion of his own. "What? It's a guy's pride to pay the bill, right?" he said with a smile as he stood, stretching once more and taking a few steps in the direction of the door.

Obviously, her meal being paid for by someone who wasn't blood-related with an unspoken obligation to pay for it was a completely foreign concept, so Claire just frowned in confusion and put her wallet away. She got up, pulling her coat on that she'd taken off during the meal and followed him to the door slowly, her brows furrowed still as she thought about it. Why..? "Is it?" She asked, still completely not sure about this whole 'someone not blood-related is paying for my meal what sort of trickery is this' situation. "I always pay for my own. Or I did, whenever I went out with friends.." This was still very confusing. Why should this be any different?

"Well, yeah..." He nodded to the waitress as they passed her and pushed open the door, holding it there as he waited for Claire to exit. "I mean, it's pretty much common courtesy. Or at least some kind of guy code." He shrugged slightly, unsure of the specifics. To the best of his knowledge, Morrison had followed this unspoken code as well, as well as basically every other male friend he had had. And both he and Claire had had friends in Galactic, or so he assumed, so it wasn't as though it was a regional thing...

"It -- thank you," she said as she passed through the door, pulling her coat around her and tugging her gloves on over her hands again. "It is?" But not for girls, she'd never...

Ohh.

"You mean when guys go out with their girlfriends or something?" But then why had Lucas paid for her? It made sense, of course, once she thought about it, or it did until she thought about him paying for her. Maybe it was a universal thing, where any guy paid for food for whatever girl they happened to be eating with? No, that sounded way too nice, nobody did that.

He shrugged on his jacket, "Mm, yeah, it's especially important for guys to pay for their girlfriends. But it doesn't have to be limited to dates. If a guy's out with a girl, even if the girl isn't a girlfriend, he should treat her. Chivalry, I believe is the term. This... isn't really the first time you've heard of it, is it?"

As they proceeded down the sidewalk, something snorfling around in a nearby alleyway caught the scent of warmth and breakfast on the pair and poked out a furry head from around a corner as they passed. Its ear twitched curiously as it watched them.
