"I adore reading... though now I fear I read more pet know-how books than anything that'll catch my attention better." The avarice was amused at that as he gave a light shrug, a 'what can ya do?' sort of thing. He loved his minion horde and though they could be a handful, he figured it was good to read up as best he could. Thank Jack for the training class, though! Maybe his days of self help reading was over! But he was glad that Gabe was his partner. For some reason, he felt comfy around him and they were able to talk with each other easily. Sometimes he wanted to ask if the nix would want to go see one of his favored tailors but the fellow demon was usually with his ghoul and others, and he was the type to know when was a good time to ask things. Typically.

A look of understanding showed in his eyes at the explanation and he nodded. He definitely was sharing the same sentiments on his essay as Gabe. "I feel the same for mine. The book I wrote about is one of my favorites... but I fear that as I kept writing, i found myself writing out tips to home break a foxsquirrel..." It was very easy to see that Livi was fearing that Gabe was going to fail him on his essay but the worry was gone quickly and he handed over his to the other demon so he could focus on Gabe's. "A journal, eh? What for? To make lists for things to do?" He was curious as he dug around for an acid green pen to mark anything on. If he had to make many marks at all. He never had to grade anything before, so he was a bit.. unprepared for this. Not that he showed that... but it was something that was felt more than seen.

Every now and then, his head would tilt as he put a mark for something here or there, but he didn't seem set to stamp it as a failure. Last minutes essays were hard to focus on. He knew that first hand. "I honestly didn't think I'd need to have an essay ready before entering the class, so I was a bit thrown off. So... I hope my essay doesn't bore you."

Wuthering Heights

I found this book to be rather interesting, if not for it's portrayal of Heathcliff, for the strange way it seems to jump from era to era, first starting in the present, only to jump back into the past to give us details of Heathcliff's childhood and later life. It returns to the 'present' for it's prologue and conclusion. The story is most certainly not for everything, due to the dark tone of the narrative, which depicts cruelty of the mental and physical variety. Deep down, the story is most certainly a romantic tragedy (which is another of the reasons I picked this book - I apparently seem to favor such themes in both books and songs, making me think it might be a Nix thing).

My favorite character, was without a doubt Heathcliff, not because I'd ever want to be like him, or because I might I like him, but rather, because he was the most interesting character (not to mention the most messed up, in every which way). His thought process, his actions, and his ways of approaching love make him... not only tragic, in a way but utterly deranged, which in turn kept me interested in the story. Being the central character (relationship-wise anyhow), most of the other characters are in some sort of way, bonded to him (through love, hate, affection, etc).

All in all, while it might not be a story that everyone would enjoy, it's still worth reading for the deep psychological insight of the character. At the end of the day, it would at least give good show of how not to approach a romantic relationship.

(Though rather short, and a few grammatical errors, the essay does get across Gabrian's feelings on the book itself. Though he could have explained a bit more how the man was driven to become deranged (mainly for personal want to know), it makes me wish to pick up the book and read it for myself. Which is what these reports are about, yes?

B- ))

Ugh... this was hard -_- Was a B- a bad grade to give? He really didn't know. That was why teachers should grade, not the students. Hopefully Gabrian wouldn't be upset with him that it wasn't a perfect mark. He didn't truly think so, since the other boil seemed so laid back, but still. "Ah... I heard that you play the violin? I play viola. Maybe sometime we could play together? I know there are many pieces set for both instruments."

((Edited because I'm a moron))

Holly nodded, reading was different but one of the things she was liking about the humanoid form. She watched Sin as she marked her paper. A B? That was good, or close to good if she remembered the grading system correctly. "I, uh, don't know. I liked reading that but I'm not sure what else to try to read."

The ghoul picked up Sin's paper. It was pretty pink and also very long compared to her own. Holly took a few minutes to read it and didn't mark a thing on it. "Wow! That was really good. So...the next time we read a book, I need to talk about it more?" It was impressive and the pink was awesome. Holly wrote "A -Holly" on it and drew a little smiley with foxears. There, had to put something else on it.

Aksaja looked around for a few minutes, frowning, as he didn't even know this Julian boil . . . at all. Finally, he resorted to walking around asking people their names until there was only one person left that he hadn't asked. "You Julian?" he grumbled. "Give me that," the lightning dragon muttered then, snatching at the other's paper.

He wasn't happy about being in this stupid class in the first place, and now he had to read someone else's essay. And supposedly tell them how to make it better? Tch.

Julian didn't even get a chance to look around the room for his assigned partner before his essay was snatched from his hands and another one was on his desk in its place. First he blinked at the other boil, then the new paper, noting its short length.
Boil.
Paper.

It didn't take him long to read and by the time he was done, he had lost most of the color in his face. The red markings above his eyes stood out like puddles of blood on a flat field of snow. How was he supposed to grade this? It didn't even begin to answer what Dr. Alabaster had asked them to do! He'd wanted them to compare themselves to the character, to relate, not contrast.

Well, there was a bit of relation, what with the lazy part but... Oh Death, this was terrible!

With a sigh, Julian started marking the page with notes and questions. At least he had room for it.

Dragon's Halloween

I don't really have a favorite book. At all. Don't really read that much sorry. So I just went looking for stuff about dragons cause I figured that might be cool. Didn't realize this book was some stupid kid's story. But too late to go get something else now, so here goes.

This is a book about some idiot dragon - who doesn't even LOOK like a dragon by the way. I mean, he has no wings!! (Aren't there some types of dragons that don't have wings? Could you maybe try to empathize with him? How would you feel, being a dragon that has no wings?) Anyway this dragon is all worried because it's Halloween and he doesn't have a pumpkin to carve up. So he goes to try and find one but all the good ones are gone. Stupid, should've gone earlier. But hey I'm lazy too so I guess I can kinda relate.

He also has some sort of . . . nightmare I guess about weird costumes people are wearing. It's a pretty silly book. (Maybe look deeper into this? Could weird costumes be a metaphor for the facades others put on? If so, could that relate back to you?)

The end.
(This could really use a lot more depth, more insight into how it relates to you, other than you just find it stupid. On top of that, I think it should have a more detailed summary of the story, I don't think I grasp of what happened... Did things work out with the pumpkin or did he just give up? How did the costume nightmare affect him?
But this is what peer revision is for, so... hopefully this helps.
D)

"Sorry..." Julian murmured under his breath as he handed the paper back. At least he'd been honest.

"Ah, no- Frankly speaking, after I read your work, I realized that I didn't relate my own life to the book enough. The assignment requirement was for us to write how our own life ran parallel to the story, after all. In that area, its clear that you did better," She nodded slowly, eying her essay; she had gotten too absorbed with the book! Blushing slightly at its compliment, she smiled, "Thank you... And that was a fair literacy analysis, despite it being your first!"

She held out its paper, notes and grade written at the bottom, towards it; the paper will probably go back to the Professor soon, but it seems like not everyone was ready...

"Grazie," Malodore said, accepting its paper back and making further note of her revisions. "My talents run more towards the medical; while I enjoy reading, it is hard for me to diagnose things that do not bleed or break!" It opened its beak in a smile. She seemed a pleasant and learned ghoul.

"Perhaps I shall procure a copy of your book the next time I require light reading."

"Well you should read about subjects you like, you seemed to enjoy the battle scenes so maybe some war stories would interest you?" Sin watched as Holly read her paper and she tensed up a little worried. Luckily Holly didn't decide to question her about her emotional ranting at the bottom and she grinned at the adorable smiley face. Sin had never had a smiley face on a paper before somehow it was almost better then the A.

"Yes whenever you write a paper it needs to include a summary, so that if someone who has no knowledge of what your talking about reads it they can still understand. A summary...well sums up the whole story with a few details and key points." She relaxed and flipped her paper back over so no one else would have a chance to read it...except the professor.

"It's alright," Alessa told Ren, seemingly genuinely fine. "I can walk by myself, you know...I had to manage somehow before you came along," she teased, a bit of her chipper attitude towards the class reflecting itself in her voice and mannerisms now.

"Oh, yes, I agree. I do love to read," She told Livi. She likely would have gone on and on about it too, had it not been for the sudden assignment by the teacher. Oh, pairs? She looked at the list and found she didn't recognize the name. For the briefest moment she was jealous of Gabe and Livi, as they got to work with each other, but it passed. Someone else wouldn't be bad either.

As soon as Tsetsiliya got the proper chance to move seats among the milling students, she squinted through the crowd. She recognized a number of faces from the spin the bottle game (some of which making her promptly flush), and the name she was paired with sounded terribly familiar as well. But as the pairs were moving off, she noticed a particularly pink rabbit ghoul who looked to be waiting for her partner - somebody else she had seen at the game. The name did sound familiar, and this girl looked awfully familiar and unpartnered, so it wouldn't hurt to ask. The poludnica gently nudged her way through the others, mumbling pardons as she went.

"I-I am thinking we are partners?" When she reached the desk next door, Tsetsiliya gave Alessa a small smile and gripped her paper in her hand. "I am knowing you from the game t-the other day, but I do not think we have given names?" Dropping into the seat, she smoothed her paper out onto the desk and awaited Alessa's response with the same nervous smile.

Alessa looked up as another ghoul came over to her. She blinked, her eyes widening a little in recognition. "Ohh, so you're Tset?" She smiled immediately, remembering the ghoul from spin the bottle. She had seemed terribly sweet and Alessa was more than happy to get to talk to her now, in a far more...appropriate setting.

"I'm Alessa," she told her warmly. "I wished we could have met more properly the other day but...well, obviously it wasn't the best setting for that."

Daisuke waited, just staring at his paper until it zoomed in to mindless space. The only thing, other than the chatter that filled the room around him, that snapped him out of his trance was when the teacher spoke up once more. Quickly snapping his head up, he eyed the teacher breathing a silent sigh of relief that he hadn't been swatted for coming in 'latish' and listened carefully. They were partnered up. He was curious, letting his eyes scan for who his partner was with every letter that was scribbled upon the chalkboard.

Coralie.

....

Wasn't that the girl with the man-eating hat? Or, what rather looked like a cannibal hat. He slowly looked to the side to the new found partner in class. He hadn't ever spoken to her, or heard anything of her. Just, the hat was more noticable than anything else. He debated a while, on making a move to go over to her and swap papers. Idly, he just sat there until he was kicking himself. He got up, lazily grabbing the edge of his paper in between his fingers and walked over to Coralie.

He was starting to wish he had put a hell of a lot more effort in to this paper now someone else was going to read it... Maybe she felt the same? Who knew. He smiled approaching her. "Hey. Guess were partners. Um... " He held out his paper not really knowing what to say other than.

"Shall we get started?" He gestured to a seat next to her, hoping that it would be ok to sit there.

Coralie had almost been dozing. Yes, she was already that bored. She had known she would be, though, she had accepted that this class was stupid and that she didn't know why in Jack's name she was in it. When the assignment was announced she lifted her head enough to prop it on her palm, apparently unimpressed with the task at hand. Without moving much she let her gaze travel around the room. Finally she came across a boil that seemed to be heading in her direction. Wasn't he a member of the flying team? She should know, she was the captain. However, she was notorious for not remembering people that didn't catch her attention. Maybe that was why.

"I suppose we must," she agreed as he came over. She sat back in her seat, flicking her eyes in the other seats general direction as if to tell him to sit there. She picked up her paper and slid it over to his desk without much though. She didn't seem terribly concerned about it, but that wasn't because of how well the paper was written or anything.

Tsetsiliya felt some of her anxiety slip away when Alessa called her by name (a shortened form of it, anyway). She remembered her, even though they hadn't actually spoken at the party! Her smile became less nervous.

"It is nice to be meeting you properly as well," she replied happily, but still with a tinge of nerves. "But I am not so sure that the party was for very much meeting people as it was... meeting people." A quiet, nervous laugh escaped her lips before her tapping fingers remembered her paper in her hands. "O-Oh! I am thinking we should be giving papers in exchange, yes?" She looked down doubtfully at her own, seeing flaws in structure, grammar, the big imposing strike line through her name before it was rewritten.. perhaps it was nerves. Actually it probably was. Buying a moment for herself, she looked at Alessa curiously. "What book did you choose for the writing of your paper?"

At the moment, Aksaja hadn't yet noticed the 'grade' the other boil wrote on his paper, as he was frowning slightly while reading Julian's paper in return.

Quote:
Julian Thanatos
1/25/11
Literature, Dr. Alabaster

I cannot really remember the first time I read The Neverending Nightmare, I have read so many books since I first started reading that it just melded in there. (melded in there? What kind of phrase is that?) But of everything I have read, I feel that it is one of my top favorites, one that I can relate most to. It is a novel about a reaper boil named Balthazar who finds a book called The Neverending Nightmare and is drawn into the story of a human boy who has to find the cure to a plague that is spreading over the human world. (So it's ... a book inside a book? That's weird.) He (I think you mean The) human boy goes on a grand adventure, meeting wisemen and aviators and being chased by an assassin who's immune to the plague. And in the end, it turns out that the reaper boil is the key to curing the plague. He is then drawn into the world of the story and has more adventures, helping him grow as a person.

I know it is more difficult to relate to someone unlike yourself when reading, especially young readers. Normally I did read about young demons. But when I was little, I always used to feel like Balthazar, even though he was a reaper. I did not have problems with my family like he did, but I did get bullied a lot by other demons that lived in our neighborhood. I was smaller and more than a little awkward, so I was an easy target. Probably the easiest target around. I had older brothers who could help me, and often did, but that did not change the fact that I decided I would rather stay inside and lose myself in my books rather than venture outside and face the other kids, like Balthazar. (Then why not grow a spine and stand up for yourself, geez. No wonder you got picked on.) So many times, I have felt like I can close my eyes and find myself in the book, riding across plains with the human or flying on a magic carpet or being the hero and saving the ghoul from a stupid knight or exorcist. It helps me forget about being awkward or shy, to forget worrying about someone taking my books or tossing me into a lake.

Fiction helps me escape from the world around me. It makes me want to someday write novels like The Neverending Nightmare for other boils and ghouls who need an escape, just like I did.

(Wow, I dunno what to say really. Never read this book or anything, don't know much about writing .... Okay paper I guess, but you seem like such a wimp.

Uuhm. B )

He moved to hand the paper back to the other boil and blinked to see his own paper held out toward him. He took it and frowned a bit as he read over the notes the other boil had made, and then shrugged. "S'okay." Not like he really cared about this class anyway.

Julian took his paper back and...

"Wh-What?" he asked, frowning at the dragon boy. He looked back at his paper, glanced back over the notes written there. One grammatical error he missed when writing the essay and... And...

"You gave it a B because of a missing T? That's pre-pre-preposterous!" he hissed, brows furrowing in a frown. He pointed to the first comment on the page.

"It melded into the long list of books I read when I was younger, melded means blended, combined," he explained, then pointed a clawed finger at the second comment. Then the fourth, then the last.

"None of this matters to the quality of the essay. I could have pointed out how you're a stupid meat-head who should have done your work as soon as you got it instead of doing it at the last minute when you didn't have time to find a better book. I mean, we had a week to do this essay! But I gave you corrective criticism you need and graded you on the assignment." He trailed off, feathers ruffled and eyes narrowed. He didn't want to complain, he could have just let it slide. But seeing that red B on the page and the only real problem on his paper was a damn T... It just set him off.

Aksaja blinked when the other boil actually freaked out over the grade. Geez, was it that big of a deal to him? Maybe it was ... weird. "I know what melded means. It just sounded weird," he muttered, sticking hands into pockets.

Then he raised brows a bit when Julien started going off about things wrong in his own essay. "Well uhm. Look I really don't give a s**t about reading books so I didn't wanna do this anyway. But if you want an A that bad, give yours back and I'll change it." He shrugged.

Julian ran a hand through his hair, calming almost immediately. He has a very short span on his temper.

"It's not... I don't want... I just don't want all the criticism on my essay to be the fact that you think I'm a wimp. It's not like I d-don't already know that. If you think there are things that could be elaborated on or ways it could flow better or tons of grammatical errors, sure, point that out. And... Lemme see your paper," he finally said and didn't wait for an answer before taking it back and adding a plus to the D. The boil did deserve it... kinda. Julian just hadn't intended to do the plus or minus system because it would complicate things. But now it looked like there were merits to the system.

"What about graphic novels? I'll bet that would have worked just fine for this," he replied, handing the paper back. They weren't really comic books. Well, they were, but they had more depth most of the time. There were even a few novels he had in both regular and graphic form.

Graphic what-now? Aksaja frowned slightly at that, eyeing the plus now in front of the D on his paper. Coming from such a society as he had, the only books there were ones full of old traditions and the like. COMPLETELY boring.

"What's a graphic novel?" he asked, tilting head a little. There were so many new things here. It hadn't taken him very long to get the hang of his eyePhone, but he had yet to attempt any of the 'gaming' systems or do much beyond check his groanspring and eee!-mail on a public PreCee.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Patchwork

This book is about a strange patchwork baby that comes out of a pumpkin all old and brittle like an old man and slowly ages backwards. It goes through his life with his odd condition, mostly in regard to some ghoul he meets and ends up with. I guess its supposed to be tragic or something, maybe ironic, because he dies by basically becoming a baby and then nothing. I think I was supposed to feel sorry for his wife, but she was honestly annoying and uninteresting in most of the parts of the book so I really didn't care about her all too much. What I did care about was why Benjamin aged the wrong way. I mean, come on, the title suggests this is a really interesting thing, and it is! But the book is never about that, really, and it certainly never explains it. This is completely stupid, because what is the point of leading on readers and then just being like 'haha I guess you'll never know, glad I wasted your time' or what have you?! Anyway, I only read interesting things, and this was interesting, but in the wrong way; stupid book never delivered on its promises.

Oh, I forgot to write about me in relation to the book. Well obviously I don't age backwards and don't know anyone who does so this is kind of non-applicable in my opinion. But now if I do meet someone who ages backwards I'll be sure not to marry them or die young.

Daisuke took a seat in the desk next to Coralie, taking the paper that she had slid on to it and giving it a careful read through. It was both mixed well with her related opinions on the book and the plot itself, descriptive but there wasn't any real relation to it other than she had learned from the characters mistakes. He tapped the end of his pen against his lips, scanning back over sentences here and there. The idea is quality over quantity and whilst it wasn't very long, it was written rather well if not a little casually.

He finally wrote a C at the top of the paper and circled the grade handing it back over to her with a small smile hoping she would be happy with the pass grade. "You sounded a little unsure of the book, adding 'maybe's' and 'I guess' but overall, it was nicely written."

Julian looked down, a little embarrassed now that he had to describe what graphic novels were. Especially since at least one of his brothers thought they were a dumb waste of time.

"Well, uh," he replied, running a hand through his hair.

"Graphic novels are... kinda like picture books. Take a regular novel and take out everything but dialogue and have picture panels. If you've seen comic books, they're kinda like that. Except longer because they're full stories instead of parts of one or short one-shots," he explained, doing his best to explain the whole thing. But they were something that he enjoyed and he figured at the very least it might help someone like books a little bit more. It was a step.
