The Right ForkThose who ended up on the right fork: anemosagkelos / Lull Illusei / Aura Dyslexic Rat / Water's Grace Huni Pi / Evening Hush Will find the path splitting once again before them. Nimue's voice is in the distance, taunting and luring still. There are voices in both directions. The song on the left has a somewhat sorrowful refrain. The song on the right is touched with humor. Which one do you choose?

This fork seemed more confusing than any of the previous. The voice that had been so quiet before now seemed louder--somehow managing to come from both directions at once. She flicks her ears, looking at the other kimeti--noticing for the first time that she isn't alone--before turning to stare to the path where the sorrow seems to strike a chord within her chest. She may very well be opening herself to be tricked but decides it is the way she will go. She carefully lifts her foot and places her hoof towards the left before plunging forward.

Grace heard the voice louder this time. Again, not surprisingly, another fork was presented before her. The other kimeti seemed just as unsure as she, so she knew that she wasn't alone. After a few moments, she saw one go down the left path. She'd gone left last time, and decided that going right would be what she wanted to do. Sniffing around, she kept her eyes clamped shut as she walked down the right path, hoping she hadn't chosen the wrong way.

Evening Hush breathed a sigh of relief that she managed to break free from the enchanting glow of the other path. Again at the fork, and while the sorrowful refrain made her heart ache, the doe didn't feel as compelled to go down that path. Perhaps it had something to do with the humorous note of the right path? As if this entire trip into the maze was nothing more than a game to the voice that had called them all in the first place.
Well, something about that made Evening Hush take the right path. And if luck was on her side, and if indeed this whole thing was just a game, she intended to give whoever it was a peace of her mind. Albeit in the form of a stern disapproving stare.

Aura knew she was close. The voice was still in the distance, but it felt closer, as if Nimue herself was waiting for her arrival.
She listened intently to the songs, hoping to find a clue. The songs were very different, one sorrowful and the other harsher. And suddenly, Aura realized. Her choice would depend on whether she believed in Nimue's innocence, if she were kind or cruel, regretful or apathetic.
Finally, Aura chose the left path. She would choose to believe in the goodness in others. Now, all she could do is hope for the best.

The Right Fork:Those who turned down the right fork: Turn that final corner and find themselves faced with two hollow-eyed Kimeti, pale and sickly, who stare at them with an edge of something hopeless. "Take us out of here, please." Only one of them has the strength of will -- and the strength -- to speak. Now that they've been asked, though, how could Water's Grace and Evening Hush say 'no' to the request? They will lead the kimeti back to the maze's entrance, whether they wish it or not. They'll need the help, too. OOC:Both of you who took the right path, sorry, you're out! However, please PM blue with one adjective and onecolor each, for a special prize!

The Left Fork:Those who headed down to the left, however: anemosagkelos / Lull Illusei / Aura Have reached the end of the maze, and before them stands Nimue, her song finally cut out to silence, her eyes glowing in an extremely eerie fashion, and her expression somewhat mocking. She raises her chin as she watches them. "Is this it?" It's a snort, almost disgusted, and she shakes her head once, quickly. "I expected more of you." But it seems they're not done yet. There are no more forks, no more options, just Nimue, standing on the edge of a fountain and watching them. "You can't both win -- so." So, she shrugs, shakes her head, and pauses to think. "So you must each tell me a story. A story about me. It must be in your own words, and it must involve me in some way, in any of my many forms. Nimue. Merlin's apprentice. Lady of the lake. Find it and tell it." Her tail swishes, her eye ridges arch. "I will choose the one I like best." OOC:You heard the lady! Find a story of her - google will be your friend here - and retell it in your own words. Extra credit will be given for making it swamp appropriate. You have 48 hours from the time of this post.

Lull hadn't come into the maze knowing who she was dealing with, hadn't thought to compare this to any legends. She wasn't entirely sure what to think with succeeding in finding Nimue--hadn't really thought to imagine finding anything. To find herself face to face with such a doe, it's intimidating.
She flicks her tail, letting the end curl around her leg, uncurl, flick, and repeat. There are many stories of Nimue though she doesn't remember many. She does remember one. She threads the legend through her mind, seeing it play out, before turning to look to the other doe. Deciding that the other doe doesn't seem ready to tell a story, she steps forward. She closes her eyes and bows her head then begins to tell the legend she remembers most clearly.
"Once, long ago, the swamp was not called Matope. It had no one name, for there were many kimeti that inhabited parts of it and each grouping had its own name. One such name referred to a group where the most brave of kimeti ruled over all from a great cave of white stone. His name was Will Lead To Peace1 and this grouping was called Nothing Crooked Reigns Here2.
A great wielder of magick stood beside Will Lead To Peace. He was adviser and friend. A kimeti that was revered for his wisdom and his foresight. And damned, in silence, for he was rumored to have been born by a sinful union. He was Wisened Mind Foolish Heart3.
On the outskirts of Nothing Crooked Reigns Here, lived a beautiful filly--one that had been hounded and sought after from birth. It was this that made her relish her home. For unlike most kimeti she lived in a clear lake where the surface was perfect stillness while the waters raged underneath. No one but the damsels of the lake, blessed by The Lady of the Lake herself, could enter. She was called Wild Waters Beneath Calm Surface4.
Surface was imbued with magick and yet she struggled to use it to her full potential. She left her watery home to find counsel, a teacher that could help her become great and powerful. She found Nothing Crooked Reigns Here, more importantly she found Wisened.
The old fellow was instantly entranced by the beautiful filly before him. He was a male and she a female, he felt there could be no one else for him--no one else for her. And he consented to be her teacher. At heart, Wisened was a good kimeti, but the instant attraction he felt for his student began to twist his thoughts. He wanted her, he deserved her. After all, he was teaching her all that he knew and he should have something in return for that.
Surface did not agree and did not want Wisened's attention. She left Nothing Crooked Reigns Here. In her wake, she left only the possibility that she may return. He chose not to follow having foreseen that she would return to the cave of white stone, to him. The filly returned to the home she had always known and sunk to the bottom where the Lady of the Lake and her surrogate sisters resided.
It was a few seasons later that Surface returned to Nothing Crooked Reigns Here. She was no longer a filly, instead a doe of extraordinary beauty stood before Wisened. He instantly made advances and though unwelcome, she reciprocated. It had been a long time of living beneath the lake that she had had time to think over it all. And she had decided, she was not someone to be used. She was not someone that could be another's. However the best way of going about this, the only way to protect herself was to pretend and lie until she was more powerful than any buck that dared pursue her.
She preyed easily on Wisened, learning his magick and memorizing his prophecies, allowing him that which he wanted under one condition. He must promise that he would never use his magick on her, especially to force her to be with him as he wished. And that promise was made by the wise buck that had such a foolish heart.
However it soon came to be that Surface was stronger than Wisened, much more than she let on. She no longer needed his teachings. And though she regretted that such drastic measures be taken, she knew that he would never leave her be as long as he or she lived. She thought his lust for her was overwhelming never knowing that deep inside Wisened loved her.
She convinced him to come with her one moonlit night in the still of autumn. He had foreseen what was to happen but his love for Surface burned fierce and he followed. She led him deep into the woods, far past Nothing Crooked Reigns Here and stopped in front of a large thorn bush. She stood back as he inspected it for he had never seen one so large. And as he stood there, she whispered under her breath the words which he knew were coming.
Wisened turned to look at her, a sad look on his handsome face, "I had hoped I was wrong but as I am not, I think you should know. I love you, Surface."
She watched, visibly unmoved though the heart within her beat frantically at those words, as the great wizard was pulled into the thorn bush to be imprisoned. She had thought forcing him to live with the uncomfortable pain of thorns would show him how he made her feel with his unwanted advances and attention. Now she saw that she was forcing him to live with a broken heart, held fast to be confronted by that knowledge forever.
And she regretted.
And she grew angry.
And she whispered a spell that would take the knowledge of those three words from her mind.
She turned from the bush, unmoved by words that she did not remember, and went back to Nothing Crooked Reigns Here. Lead would need a new adviser, one skilled in magick more so than Wisened. And it would be her power alone that would make Nothing Crooked Reigns Here and Lead's reign strong. She would be free of unwanted ties as she demonstrated a doe did not need a buck as much as a buck needed a doe."
As the story ends, Lull twists her neck to tilt her head as she takes a moment to look at the doe. Then she bows once more and shuffles back to allow the other kimeti a chance to tell a story.
And rather to find herself wondering if Nimue cared for her re-telling, she wonders what kind of shadows one would find in a thorn bush.
((OOC: I don't know if I did this right. I admit I didn't think of Lull re-telling the story, so the voice is entirely mine and not hers. I hope that discrepancy is all right. As I said, I have a habit of over-thinking, so sometimes I miss the obvious.
Notes: 1 Will Lead To Peace - King Arthur; called Lead after notation 2 Nothing Crooked Reigns Here - Camelot; Crooked is the Celtic translation for Cam 3 Wisened Mind Foolish Heart - Merlin; called Wisened after notation 4 Wild Waters Beneath Calm Surface - Nimue; called Surface after notation))

Aura stared in awe of the sorceress Nimue. She had heard many stories of the Lady in the Lake – stories both of her kindness and of her cruelty. Even now, staring at the Kimeti herself, she knew not what to believe. It was if Nimue was shrouded, just as her maze was. Only she was shrouded not by a mist, but by mystery and rumor. Aura knew that she alone would not be worthy to tell Nimue’s story.
She would have to find a second source. Motivated not only by her desire to win, but also by genuine curiosity, Aura set out to know the truth. She wandered out back into the maze, carefully recreating her path in her mind. After hours of wandering, she found before her Merlin himself, trapped, too, in the maze. Aura knew, then, who to ask. Who better than the Kimeti who taught her and loved her and who she betrayed centuries ago?
He was reluctant, at first. But, Aura pleaded, and finally, he began his tale.
Long ago, he told her. I was out studying the Motherfather’s fleas and ticks when I met the most beautiful Kimeti I’d ever seen. She was a young filly then, and I a full-grown buck, but that didn’t matter. I loved her. And for a while, she loved me, too. They say she never did, but I know. She loved me, and in the end, I suppose it was partly my fault how our love ended.
We were together always. I taught her all I knew. She was bright and curious; she thirsted for knowledge and power. Nimue was a Kimeti grounded in emotion. For her, it was all or nothing – love especially. So, when she loved me, she truly loved me, and that love I craved. Even as I realized she would be the death of me, I couldn’t leave her.
I came to crave her, and as the Festival of Abundance drew near one year, I was determined to have her. She had become a beautiful doe, and I was no longer the only one vying for her attention. She refused me, but, I too blinded by my lust insisted, and she insisted otherwise. She made me promise I would not take her by magic or force, and I accepted, if only because I had to. Her love for me had already waned months before our journey to Ghost Thistle’s mound, and I was desperate to regain it. But, my advances only made her loathe me – so much that she plotted to rid of me, though I could not have known it then.
While we were in the forest, she used my own spell against me, trapping forever in the maze. Before she left, she told me she believed it was for my good, for the clan’s good, that I was trapped. She had come to believe that I was no longer a good influence on our tribe. From her face, I knew. She truly believed it. However she made herself believe it, she did. And because of that, I forgive her. Not entirely, I must say. But, I cannot hate her as I did when she left me here that night.
I’ve had centuries to think, after all.
She returned to this maze a few centuries ago, taking refuge here in her sorrow. She cannot die nor can I. A blessing, it may appear at first, but truly a curse. Her mate, I am told, had died, as had her son, and the swamp and our world had changed. Our tribe, led by the great Arther, had thrived and grew stronger than any other Kimeti clan had. However, jealousy and greed destroyed it, and Nimue, disillusioned and tired, left her home forever.
And here she has stayed since. How she lived after I was trapped here I myself do not know. I can tell she loved her mate – just as she loved me. I remember him a shy and awkward foal in his youth who loved and was never loved in return. Perhaps, she found him refreshing, a simple buck with a big heart. Refreshing as compared to me. In any case, she was happy. She took over my role as Arther’s advisor, a worthy substitute, I must say despite myself.
She is vengeful, that is true. But, she was kind, and she was honest. She loved and lived with sincerity. She was not the heartless seducer the stories reduced her to. Even as I live by her curse, I cannot stand by and let say so.
So, here it is. The true story of our love and of the Lady of the Lake.
After she thanked the Kimeti, Aura hurried along her way. She had her story – and a glimpse into the heart of the sorceress.
She returned just in time to hear the other Kimeti’s story. Aura waited patiently for her turn; then, she told hers – nervously at first, but quickly gaining her confidence. Regardless what happened next, she had discovered something magical and met Nimue herself.
When she finshed, she stepped back and waited for Nimue’s choice.
