Welcome, to everyone who has arrived, to Defense Against the Dark Arts! I'm Professor HarryPotterFreako! Don't worry if you were a bit late, I understand first days can be a bit confusing.
And it's ok, don't worry Callysto I don't think elves are dark creatures. *Smiles*
So, we will end the discussion today and you will start your first lesson shortly.
So, the discussion?
Correct! Five points to Gryffindor! Dementors are indeed dark creatures, feeding off human happiness, causing a sense of despair to the people around them. They can also suck ones' soul, what people call the dementors' kiss. Leaving the victim in a vegetative state. But, hopefully, a defensive spell, tho difficult, exist for such creature. The Patronus charm; Expecto Patronum.
Excellent! Five points to Ravenclaw! A banshee is a dark creature, and as you said, has the appearance of a woman with floor length black hair, and a skeletal green tinged face. It can kill anyone by making a high-pitched supersonic scream.
Great participation! Five points to Gryffindor! Yes, boggarts are shape-shifting dark creatures that transform into the worst fear of a person near it. Since it can only transform into one persons' worst fear, it is, as you said, best to have someone else with you so you can try to confuse it, not knowing in which fear it should turn into. There is one charm that can be used against a boggart but will not kill it; Riddikulus. This charm transforms the boggart into something the caster find funny, causing laughter which is what banishes it.
Good, good! Five points to Slytherin for your contribution! Werewolves are dark creatures, but only when in their wolf form. When they are human they are not dark creatures. They transform on every full moon and, tho they can be the kindest people on Earth, they can become very bad when they transform. They don't know who their friends are, which can cause them to attack the people they love. There does not exist any cure for werewolves, but the Wolfsbane potion can help; they transform but keep their human mind.
Nice participation! Five points to Hufflepuff! Grindylows are dark creature because, tho they are not very dangerous, they do sometimes eat humans. They live in the bottom of some lakes and they have green teeth, pointy horns and long, strong fingers they use to pull their prey into the water.
Not bad at all, got a few right! 5 points to Ravenclaw!
-A basilisk, also know as the King of Serpents, is a dark creature. It is a dark green giant serpent that can grow up to 50 feet in length and has large yellow eyes. Their eyes have the power to kill anyone who look directly in them, but if they only see the reflection of the eyes, they will only be petrified.
-Acromantulas, tho dangerous, are not dark creatures. They are giant poisonous spiders that have 8 eyes, are very intelligent and are capable of human speech.
-Inferi are dead bodies of humans that are reanimated by dark wizards. This magic is from the dark magical branch of necromancy. Their purpose is to serve as puppets to that dark wizard. They are creatures of the dark and hate light and heat, which is why some of the best spells to use against them are fire-summoning spells such as Incendio or Fiendfyre.
-Pixies however, are not dark creatures. They are small, bright blue mischief-makers that can fly and love to do tricks and practical jokes. They communicates in very shrill voices and are very powerful for their size, being able to lift people while flying.
Five points to Hufflepuff for your contribution! Chimeras are rare, very dangerous vicious, bloodthirsty creatures that have a lion's head, a goat's body, and a dragon's tail. They aren't however, dark creatures.
Five points to Ravenclaw for paying attention! A manticore, a very dangerous and rare beast capable of intelligent speech, is not a dark creature. It has a human-like head, a lion's body, and a scorpion's tail with a stinger. A Manticores' skin repels all known charms, so is difficult to control it with magic. Its stinger kills instantly.
Five points to Gryffindor for great participation! A creature is deemed dark based off its intentions. A dark creature exist mainly to cause harm and damaged. It does not kill to eat or to survive, it kills for no reason at all. So, as Aludra said, a creature that isn't very dangerous can be dark or a creature that isn't dark can be very dangerous. Correct! Five points to Slytherin!
