Because what if you don't wake up, that's what he wanted to say. But he was too scare to say even that. "Please, just stay awake. I'm scared."

She struggled her closing eyes open again. "Scared?" she mumbled. "Why?"

"I don't want to lose you," Eoin whispered.
***
It'd been years since they met. It seemed strange now to think of it like that. He thought back on the time, and the words he said. If only, he had the courage to say them now. Those words would mean so much more than they did then but now the words failed him.
What if she said nothing or she laughed? Things would change. Perhaps for the better, but possibly...possibly for the worst. Then what would happen? Their friendship might be over. It was better to be her friend than nothing. He didn't want to lose her even if it meant never saying what he felt.
And yet...and yet, the idea was appealing if she said yes. She could care for him, it was possible. Maybe she would. But every time he looked at her he thought of all the adventures they'd shared, and the risk was just too great to tell her.

Oddly her mind had drifted back to that same day, not knowing the direction of his thoughts. The day he learned she could breathe underwater and often slept in deep sea caves. Well, she had as a child. Now... not nearly as much. After all, where was the fun in deep sea diving if her best friend couldn't dive with her?
They'd been together so long now that it felt like it had been forever. He had helped her when she had been stuck, and then trapped in a flood caused by her over active magic... She was still trying to control that... it.... was not going well....
Of course, that wasn't the only thing that could be going better. She sank down further in the oasis she had been resting in, watching him on the sand. Oh, their friendship was stronger than ever... but... But there were days when she wanted... Oh she didn't even know. But there was something she wanted. Something that made it feel weird sometimes when they spoke, or when she looked at him. Something that was pain and... not. She didn't understand. She wanted to tell him but... some fear held her back. What if he only heard the pain part and tried to leave for her own good? Thinking of him leaving was the thing that hurt worst of all. She sunk down further, until only her eyes and the top of her head was visible above the water. She hated hiding things from him, but how in the world could she tell him? How could she explain something she didn't understand? How could she risk his leaving?

Eoin picked up a coconut off the ground, he'd spent several minutes trying to knock it down from the top of the tree. He loved to have coconut on blisteringly hot days like this, it made him think of when Tanaris had taught him how to swim. She'd taught him so that he could go with her into the deep waters, swim with her for hours.
He still tired of swimming though, he wasn't meant to stay afloat all his life. He couldn't sleep in the caves she'd love to frequent when she was younger--he could sometimes travel with her to them if there was some shelf for him to lie on above the water but he'd still not mastered holding his breath for that long.
Stepping out into the water, he called out to her, "Tanaris?" He looked around for her, and when he caught sight of the top of her head and eyes peeking above the water, his heart gave a jolt in his chest.

Her ears perked forward slightly when he called her name. She pushed up with her tail letting her head and neck fully surface. Water rolled off of her as she lightly shook her mane to get it out of her eyes. Her heart thumped oddly at the sound of him calling her name, but she pushed it aside. She would not scare off her best friend. not for anything. "Yes?" she asked, flicking her wings lightly to help her stay afloat.

His eyes met hers, and he found himself wading out to her without so much as a thought. He couldn't turn away. When he reached her, he blushed handing her the coconut. "Here, I--" He hesitated for a long moment, fumbling with words.

She blinked tilting her head. Why was he acting so oddly? And since when did faces change color like that? Had she seen him do that before? She wasn't certain, but it was a fascinating trick. Could she get him to do it again? Her eyes drifted to the coconut in his outstretched hoof. "Need me to open it up for you?" she asked, confused as she guessed the end of his sentence. He was acting most peculiar, she wondered why she felt good about that.
