The Adgengar Pandemic
  • Update:12/11/10
    Word count: 27,252

Oh goodness, I'm past the halfway point. I officially feel accomplished. Of course, I left off in a part I really don't want to write, and I can't really get around it (teenage girls have to spend some time with their friends over the summer).

Anyway, I'll look up 'Mad Love' on Youtube. And don't worry about scanning anything. Most of the interest I have in this genre is just what you write, and I have this bad habit where I never get around to things I'm not completely interested in. Except homework.
We don't have cable either, which I am so happy about. I spend enough time on the computer already, for heaven's sake. Hulu is my movie base though. Three cheers for Glee and Castle!

I always like watching the extra stuff on DVD's, like commentary, process, whatever. But I only waste my time doing that if its something I really like. A good example would be 'The Road to Eldorado' and that word, Loquacious.
"Let your sword do the talking!"
"I will, it will be loquacious to a point!"

I am going to eventually scan it anyway to have a digital copy. I partially scanned my Year One comics for that reason, because the wear and tear is really starting to get to them. [/Ireadittoomuchbutitismyfavoriteoneshutup.>>]

In any case, I love DVD commentary too. One of my favorite comments was on Nightmare Before Christmas, and Henry Selick mentioned how Tim Burton wanted everything in Halloween Town to be realistic, i.e., no magic. So Selick said he sometimes had to "trick him" to get things he wanted, like Lock, Shock, and Barrel's walking bathtub. It has a crank in the back, so it is not a "magical" bathtub, it is a "mechanical" bathtub. XD

On that "loquacious" word: if there was ever one word to sum up a majority of my posts...

Haha, Nightmare, if you ever change your username, Loquacious had better be in there somewhere.

That bit about the mechanical bathtub made me laugh. I'm going to remember that.
As far as magic goes, only Harry Potter can get away with such straight-up easy magic. In most cases, magic needs to have alot more depth, be harder to come across, etc, etc.
I don't believe in fate, but I still feel like I was born to write fantasy, yet I use the magic very sparingly. I'm all about mythical creatures though. (Three cheers for centaurs.)

My username has really grown on me (it was my first net handle >>), but if I ever make another mule just to username swipe (and since I have three mules that I made to do just that...), I will be certain to do that. <3

I actually dislike a lot of universes where magic or superpowers are the prominent focus (and my interests easily reflect this). Harry Potter kind of kept the magic in the background and used it to enhance the world. There was far more character interaction than there was magic, which is what kept me entertained.

I write modern occult fantasy. Some characters have supernatural abilities (ability to me = gift of some sort, usually creature-specific, that just effects the creature using it), but few have actual powers (which I classify as able to use warp the world and other beings around them). So wall-walking or shape-shifting count as abilities; controlling/hypnotizing someone and using magic are powers. Very few of my creatures with powers have powerful ones, mostly because I dislike writing them, but the ones that do serve as plot points, and their powers only come out when needed.

Ah, one of the things I just love about Harry Potter is all the character interaction. Its like you're reading about a real life, not just a prolonged adventure.
(I have to warn you now, I kind of idolize Harry Potter. As far as I'm concerned, J K Rowling did everything perfect)

I definitely want a whole world full of characters, with as many people as we interact with in real life.

Magic is a tricky subject for me. I don't have really strong preferences, and it kind of just depends on the writer.
For my writing, personally, magic is always used on a small scale. Almost no one has it. I never thought about classifying the difference between ability and power, but I certainly understand your explaination and I'm probably going to adopt your ideas.
I like the idea of other races have trace amounts of magic, especially elves and faries. Humans never have power.

When I think of fantasy, I always tend to focus more on the races than magic. Lord of the Rings has a great balance between magic and creatures for me- lots of creatures, and some powerful magic- but not very much. All the main characters are different races, and only one of them has any real magic.

I also like mythical items, like a shield or breastplate thats lightweight, but can never be pierced, or a weapon with a history (although I don't care for 'special swords'- thats so old. And I think the hero should be able to kick butt with any sword he picks up).

Fellow Potter geek. I can rave about that just as much as I can rave about Batman. XD (Snape is my chosen character. <3 And I agree that Rowling did most things perfect, though I disliked how Harry, Ron, and Hermione did nothing but camp for half of the last book. That is about the only thing I wish would change).

You can go ahead and adopt my magic classification system if you would like. I prefer abilities over powers. It still makes the creatures more powerful than humans, but it does not give them wicked large advantages. I guess I like it better when humans have more of a chance to fight back.

I read one book of The Lord of the Rings, and while I liked the story, I got tired trying to get through it, though I do enjoy the movies. And I agree that the balance is nice. I liked that a lot of the struggles the Fellowship has to go through.

I grew out of my "special weapons" phase when I outgrew jewel names. I agree that a real hero can use any weapon at his disposal and does not need a special one.

Oh geez, I just feel wonderful. I actually have a book on my hands. I'm 6,000 words behind schedule, but I upped my daily word count to 2.5k, so I'll catch up in 14 days. I don't actually have that much time left, but I'm feeling confident about it anyway.

I am so close to 40k! I almost want to throw in just one thousand more words to break that mark, but I'm too tired, and I'm having a bit of writer's block. I can only talk about Broadway salaries for so long.

I thought I still had 20,000 words to go. Turns out, its only 10,000. This is definitely going to work.

Only 8,000 more words to go! And I still have five days to do it- thats less than 2k words per day, which is what I've been doing.

I think when I'm done with this, I'm going to abandon this entire story because I am so displeased with it. I'm purely doing it to prove to myself that I can.
Otherwise this would have been dropped two weeks ago. Yay for self motivation!

    Yay indeed!

Do keep it when you finish, though. You never know where yo can re-use ideas, or if you ever get the desire to fix it.

Nightmare, I will always keep this story- its such a major accomplishment for me it would pain me to throw it away. Besides, it was way too much work to be tossed aside that easily. I really liked most of my characters... I want to do another, better story about them (and I'll probably make it my next project).

Less than 3k to go! I'll have reached my goal by tomorrow- I'm so excited!
My story's not finished yet, and I don't know if I actually will finish it. I'll probably throw in some quick, really pathetic ending, just to say I did.
  • PostPosted: Thu Dec 23, 2010 9:59 pm

Good. I am pleased to hear that. I take it that writing it has inspired new stories with those characters?

    Finished!

I even completed the actual story! I feel fantastically accomplished!
I did throw in a poor excuse for an ending, but it is finished, nonetheless.

Nightmare, two of my main characters I have had for a while- this story was me finally writing a piece of their lives down, but even before that, I had several stories for them. Now I have another two characters that I love and will continue writing about. I just have to think of a topic that will keep me interested long enough.
