The thing about fruititarianism is that mostly people think that just mean apples and oranges. But they generaly eat anything that is a techniqual fruit. Many thing we think of as vegetables are actualy fruits. Plus most fruititarians that Ive meet do eat vegetables that be cropped back without killing that plant. I cant speak for Jains on this matter but they wont mind having lettuce just so long as the plant was left alive. (you can cut some leaves off but leave the plant and it will grow back for another day.) Thus nothing dies. Plus many grains can be gatherd without killing the plant. In the end they can have a pretty wide range of things to eat. But this all requires you pretty much grow the food yourself, which is what makes it hard. Not everyone wants to be a farmer.
Oh, I know. I think the Jain ruling on it though, at least in its most strict sense, says you can't eat anything unless it naturally falls off the tree/bush by itself - you can't pick it, it has to have, by work of time and gravity, have left the place it grew by its own accord.

This, of course, means you can't harvest anything - no picking a few lettuce leaves, no taking any grain from the sheaf. You just have to wait food out. It's really, really hard. 3nodding

Ok I was just reading and it said that when it comes to Jains, other then strict vegan, they basicaly just dont eat root plants. ie carrots. Cuase you have to up root them to eat them. Now im conffuzeled

I do not eat meat because I do not have to eat meat. I understand that plants are alive as well, but I cannot live without plants. I eat what I need and no more.

Eating meat is fine in Buddhism. biggrin

Therevada monks will do it, if it's what is given to them in their morning alms rounds. His Holiness the Dalai Lama eats meat under doctor's orders. And many lay Buddhists continue to eat meat, and they still have a very strong practice. 3nodding

>.> i dont remember if i have posted in this thread yet....

im probably going to become a vegetarian soon, i never really thought it was a good idea to be vegetarian, what with lack of certain protiens, certain calcium thingys, and fibers oh gosh the fibers. also my dad told me even if the animals arent going to be eaten, they truely couldnt survive in the wild at all, they are all far too domestocated now adays and if any one let say a pig free they would be indirectly killing it, a pig would starve in the wild not to mention it could easily be caught by a preditor without any defence.

But im looseing faith in that defence, im sure an animal can re-addapt its the nature of being an animal. not only that its not about setting it free its just about not eating it.

my girlfriend is basicly a vegetarian and i have been living with her for the past five months almost so that makes me a vegetarian. with the exception of pepperoni on pizza and the occasional taco bell steak/beef. other than that its all about the rice bean surprise, and im not sure if i am any healthier without all that red meat cholesterol, in fact i think im missing alot of nutrition.... but that comes with being too poor to buy a full pyramid of nutrients -.- college.

yeah... that was long.

I have been a vegetarian for more than a dozen years. I will never eat meat again.

I've only been a vegetarian for a few years - basically since I left home and came to college. While I had always wanted to be a vegetarian at home, considering my small household size and the dietary concerns of the others living there, it would not only have been difficult to be vegetarian, but unfair to the others in the house. Perhaps that's a rationalization of sorts...and I will admit, I wasn't as strict about the faith then.

Buddhism is actually only a very small part of why vegetarianism is appealing to me, but it's a factor nonetheless. I encourage those who aren't vegetarian to try it, and at the very least understand the pros and cons (religious and secular).

I'm not a vegetarian, but I have nothing against them. I generally just eat what is given to me(most of the time I ask for it to be honest). That's really it for me....

I'm not a vegaterian. I tried to stop eating meat for a while but i couldn't handle, i was raised eating meat and i can't stop just like that. If i don't eat meat i start to feel really ill and tired because i'm not getting the nutrients my body has become used to.

I try and avoid meat both because of my dental work but also because just thinking about the animals we eat seems rather menacing and evil... sometimes I have a slice of bacon here and there though because you still need the basic foods right?

You'll lack none of the proteins, relax. =D Plants, being living beings just like us (thought without nervous-system to feel pain with), have been made with the same 20 protein unist as us. Eating legumens and grain in your diet frequently will keep your balanced.

Calcium is obtained from certain legumens, green, leafy plants, seeds and cabbage, to name a few. You'll get more from what you eat not only by eating less protein, caffeine and salt (which make calcium exit your body), but by consuming vitamin D (sunlight, if you life south unlike me!), being physically active and nto smoking.

Fibers? Full grain bread.

This is one of the things I consider wrong in modern meat industry; the animals have been purposefully made so that they depend on us humans and some breeds even suffer because of their increased production capacity.

Also, animals won't be released to roam the countryside because one or two people become vegetarian. It just means that ten or dozen less animals will be born to live in these inhuman conditions that meat producers nowadays offer. These things will happen slowly, and by time, when meat consumation drops at large, there might be less animals that hopefully live in good conditions.

I'm at the same financial situation, but actually living cheaper now without meat. This might be different locally, though I would seek information - eating healthy as a vegetarian requires knowledge of your body's needs, and above all, variety. The only thing that you ultimately cannot find in plants is vitamin B12, which can be found in nutrilets, soya milk (not all of it - read labels), or where I get it from, unfertilized eggs.

For your search, search "vegetarian" in gaia guilds and read their link lists - or for a purely buddhist source, go to http://www.shabkar.org/ .

Also, to cook more than rice and beans, check out this site: http://www.all-creatures.org/recipes.html

I hope you find something good around vegetarism, I certainly have.

I am a lacto-ovo-vegetarian mainly for ethical reasons, and I've chosen to adapt my lifestyle to the principle Buddha gave to his monks. I do not buy meat, I do not order meat, but if I am given or offered it, I will not refuse it. I do though appreciate it that some of my relatives are mindful enough to not give me sizzling red steaks, but rather foods that don't remind me of meat so much. lol

My reason to not eat meat is mainly based on avoiding to support the suffering caused by the practices of modern meat industry. I do try to buy free range chicken eggs when I do, and use only little cow milk products because I know (and have seen) these animals being treated.

As for the nutrition that many people in this thread have been concerned about, I'm sure I'm getting enough, especially thanks to my egg habit. It's not difficult to get enough of everything 'cept B12 in veggie-only diet, but it does require some knowledge from many different sources. Knowledge is your friend - or the so called "chicken periods", unfertilized eggs, who are my best friends. lol
