Oh, that's kind of cool. They meet monthly?
rofl Rubbing elbows, generally. Networking, hopefully.

I left her another message (think she's going to be sick of me already) about whether I need to take anything. If it's "Writing for pleasure" then I can't really see a once a month meeting being just about a speaker.
Ah that's cool. Think I like the chocolate biscuit idea though. biggrin

How did your meeting go?
I didn't end up making it to mine, but I am volunteering anyway. It's exciting.

How did your meeting go?
I've managed to get my critique group more or less off the ground.

The one last week wasn't quite what I wanted though it's just once a month, so i'll probably go back next month to try again. The one last night was good. They were doing response writing to poems but normally do prose. It's spontaneous writing next week.
I also have a workshop to go to on the 18th. biggrin
Quite a few of the members are trying to get published.
Awesome! where are you doing that?
I've also found out that writer's digest has a forum that you can advertise for a writing buddy - you support each other to reach weekly word counts and critique. So I've posted an ad there, I sound very particular :S lol.

Oh, the second one sounds like a lot of fun! What's the workshop about? And it's nice that you've found people who are trying to get published. It's a different sort of community, isn't it? All local; I've found a coffee shop that does coconut mochas, and am making everyone meet there. That's great! How do you sound very particular? And I've got the CanWrite conference I'm volunteering at and attending the weekend of the 24th, which will be fun even though I will not get to sleep at all.

It is! The first one was very hobby orientated.
The one I went to last night, one of the women said many of them had given up trying to get published. Which in a way is true as some of them were in their 70s or older but they'd been around when the group was created in '86. There has since been many new members and it's a well established group. Some of the most active members hosting international contests to raise money for charity.
The workshop is a spin off from the first group but it's a 5 hour workshop (one hour break in the middle) where they work from prompts and plot as well as write whatever we feel like. We can then discuss character development, plots, read our piece, get advice etc on it. Sounds fun. biggrin
mmm coconut mochas! It sounds like a fab idea though. Hope it goes well. How many people do you think will attend?
In my ad I have put what I write but how I want someone who doesn't write the same genre but is ok with all the details I posted about my work. I also put that I'd rather someone who has made similar progress to me, or at least is ok with just getting a brief run through of where I'm up to. Amongst other details. Most ads are just "fantasy writer looking for someone to critique buddy with."
ha!
Hope you have fun at your conference even if you don't sleep. biggrin
(hey, I stalked you! :O sorry. sweatdrop )

Oh, wow, that group sounds really impressive.
And that does sound fun!
The last meeting only had one other person, but the meeting before had three. I'm expecting either two or three people at this next meeting. And it's growing, though slowly - I've had a bunch of people express interest. But spec fic authors are almost as flaky as poets, so actual attendance or answering of email is rare (I'm guilty, too).
I'd probably be more likely to answer yours than some random short one. Details are nice, especially when getting embroiled in a long-term project like working on a book.
And I like stalking! Stalking is fun. If you have a blog I can link you and ramble incoherently about the joys of networking for a while.

It is very impressive. One of the older members was quizzing me on what I like to write and what I've done before, in passing I mentioned I've only recently got back into it. She asked me how much I'd written of my current project, so I told her around 33,000. I think she almost choked.
Then she said, "well, I suppose you're quite serious then which is very good!" she decided to recount the discussion to the lady I'd been emailing before joining the group. lol.
I suppose for a critique group, it may be better to have smaller numbers - quality not quantity! biggrin Is this critiquing your current work, or something different?
Thanks for the support, I thought it would help to add as much as I could rather than having to troll through masses of messages that aren't suitable.
I haven't a blog at present, I seem to have a hard enough time keeping up with gaia and fb. Now I'm adding the Writer's Digest to the mix (account under my real name).
I'll no doubt pick up the blogging at some point though.

Haha, that's awesome that you impressed them.
It's kind of varying at the moment; I got critique of my first chapter, but sent out a short story for this cycle.
Have you had any response yet?
Blogging is a useful tool for personal branding, and a different sort of networking. But it's a changing scene; I think it was Cory Doctorow who just got a blogging award for his Twitter account.

This is what I posted: Quote: I'm currently working on a project and I'm at over 33,000 words. I feel like this has taken me quite some time as I started this back in October. I really could do with a kick up the butt. I'm preferably after a partner that has made similar progress on a piece of work and start charting progress from this point rather than the beginning, however this isn't essential as long as the person that takes this on is ok with just a brief run through of the plot. At the moment the piece is very rough, as I'm concentrating on trying to get at least the basics down before I then go through and make it much better. Although, I've always been interested in writing, it's only since October I've finally thrown myself into it. As a result though, I have a lot of improving to do. My current WIP is fantasy but based in 'the real world', it has dark elements in it so a prospective partner should be ok with dealing with subjects of a controversial nature (keep in mind I work in mental health. I'm not describing mass murders or anything like like, but sexual abuse has been touched upon in the beginning of this piece). I would prefer a buddy who is ok with the above, but is actually working on a different genre. I write with word. Word counts I'm hoping to achieve is at least 3000, if you're after more then even better! To be discussed though. I hope that I haven't scared anyone away! Hopefully there's a match. biggrin Do you think that that would scare someone off? I suppose the forums do seem quite quiet at the moment...

The most comments I've gotten on one post is two. Not much traffic, but a few writers in the community here have mentioned that they find it interesting, and I know there are at least a handful who read it. It's a start.
3000 words as a goal? Haven't you passed that? May be referring to something not immediately obvious, but that's what struck me. And I don't think it would scare people off. It's very direct, which is always good.

Sorry the point of the forum is to send each other your progress each week. The recommendation is 3000 words from sun-sat. Thank you! I'm glad you think so. biggrin
