I’m walking in the woods, alone. The full moon shining brilliantly above me, covered by a ceiling of leaves. A dim light shines in the distance. I followed the light, hoping to find shelter away from the cruelties of many people.
The light drew me in, flickering like a campfire would. The silhouette of a person greeted me in an aggressive pose as it blurred, becoming like a wolf, muzzle turned up in a silent howl.
I gasped, my hand covering my mouth trying to hide the sound. It was no use, the thing had heard me. I wanted to run away, my brain screamed for me to get away. But my legs just wouldn’t budge.
It walked forward slowly, teeth bared. It happened to be a large black wolf with gray eyes. Its face was twisted in a snarl, warning me to leave.
I continued back slowly; it matched my steps, moving when I did. But its steps were greater than mine and soon we were practically face to face. Thanks the moment my legs responded to my mind’s screaming and I ran away as fast as I could.
It was no longer warning me. I had invaded its territory and it was erasing the threat, me. I ran as fast as I could in the darkness, the moon above being my only light, the one from the campfire retreating into the darkness as my legs carried me away.
The wolf caught up to me quickly, jumping and grabbing my shoulder to bring me down. My face hit the dirt hard. I could feel the claws tearing at my shoulder before its teeth grabbed it and pulled its head up. I let out a shriek that I couldn’t hear anymore. The shriek seemed to anger it more. Despite the anger I knew, I could feel, it instilled, the screams kept coming, ripping from my throat like the claws ripped through my flesh.
“Rebecca, wake up already!” Nathaniel called out to her as she clawed in the dirt. “It’s only a nightmare, now wake up!” She sat up quickly, her heart racing. Her eyes were full of fear and confusion. Nathaniel jumped back, surprised. “You have a lot of issues, don’t you. First you pass out with no warning. Then you screaming in your sleep over some messed up kind of dream.”
“Well I apologize for disturbing you. I’ll make sure, in the future, that my actions don’t annoy you.” She replied sarcastically Nightmares weren’t a normal thing for her, and two nights in a row only happened after she ran away from home. No… don’t you dare think about that now. Not with easily annoyed wolf man sitting right there. Save it for later! Tears were already threatening to run down her face as she took a deep calming breath.
As always, I am your servant... I forgot that I typed this up. On pg. 66

Nathaniel grabbed something by the new fire that was sending a warming glow throughout the cave, to reveal a small, Styrofoam cup. “Figured you’d need some warming up when you woke up. Maybe you’d be a cheerier person.”
She grabbed the cup, careful not to spill it, and felt the warmth pour into her hands. With both hands around it, she put the cup to her lips and took a small, testing sip and was greeting by a hot swish of molten chocolate and cool cream. She took another sip before wiping her mouth, “Thanks.”
He nodded in response, looking over at the sleeping figure that was Seiri. She was away from the fire, near the back of the cave, with her face toward the wall. And she was shaking; Not because of the cold… Looks like I’m not the only one who’s had a nightmare, here. “Dare I ask what you dreamt about?” He asked, pulling Rebecca out of her own thoughts. “What the hell made you act like that?”
“It’s nothing, just a typical nightmare.” She replied. Yea, she wanted to tell him, someone, anyone, everything she saw in the dream. But there was no reason to. She didn’t know him, much less trust him. She wasn’t about to play the damsel in distress roll, at least not twice in one night, and spill her life to a stranger. Especially, not a dumb dream. Then again… he get wolves, understands them on some bizarre level. Maybe he’d know what it meant. She sighed, pulling her knees to her chest and resting her arms on them, the hot chocolate still warming her hands. Why can’t my brain ever make up its mind? It always gives me a headache when it doesn’t agree. Oh what the hell… “It was that wolf dream again. Except it was different this time.”
Nathaniel visibly tensed every muscle at once, before forcing himself to relax. “How was it different? Did the wolf play cards with you?” He asked, rolling his eyes.
“It was the same wolf, and he still attacked… but it wasn’t me he was going after, this time. And it wasn’t exactly a wolf, either. It was a man first, then became a wolf. Like in the movies.”
He looked at her really carefully, practically examining her, before he began laughing. “There’s no such thing as a…a… wolf man or whatever it’s called. Your dreams are absolutely ridiculous.”
Oh yea… He doesn’t know that I know…Rebecca frowned in dismay, she wasn’t sure if she should tell him or not. The final ruling was not, well, not exactly. No harm in hints. “I’m being completely serious, here. The man in my dream changed into a wolf and attacked. The exact same wolf I saw last night. How is that not a coincidence?” He didn’t respond to her, his eyes were focused outside, like his mind wandered off someplace far away. She sat, listening to all the sounds around her; the bugs, breathing patterns inside the cave and bats outside, all moving together in a nocturnal symphony.
After some time of silence, he spoke, “Did you see his face?”
She looked at him, confused before she remembered what he was talking about. “I caught a glimpse of it but it wasn’t completely human, it was already contorting into the wolf’s…. snout thing.”
“Muzzle.” He sighed
“Right… but he looked a lot like you…body structure-wise, I mean. Tall, you know? ” She said, carefully picking her words.
He nodded slightly, clearly processing every word she said on the subject. His face has no emotion on it, a skill she was sure he’d mastered on purpose, but this was one of the times she was glad she was a mind reader. s**t… She knows… well she knows something, but does she know she knows? Wait what? “Do you know how he attacked? With the mouth or claws?”
Rebecca thought back to the dream, back to that sick, dark red blood that covered her vision. It was everywhere. “Claws. He knocked me down and gripped at the shoulder with claws. He tore at my skin on my back and upper chest. It was a gory mess.”
Nathaniel grunted, “Lovely picture...” He commented sarcastically, then he shook his head. “Like your first dream, you were in his territory and it was defending itself against a possible threat. That’s how it works with wolves and, I’m assuming, were men.”
“Why do you like wolves so much? I’m just curious.” She asked, turning to him slightly. He was tense; every muscle was tight but forced to look relaxed, like this was no big deal. She knew the feeling; she got that way whenever someone started asking too many questions. All she was waiting for now was for him to snap. She sipped the now cool chocolate.
“I just do…they’re beautiful creatures. Always protecting what they feel is right, always caring for their own. They’re powerful hunters; majestic, almost.” Believe it or not, he actually smiled slightly. “The ones I was with earlier, they treat me like I’m one of them. No one else at the reservation goes near them because they’re the most hostile. They’ve attacked 4 feeders. And no one blames them… they lost their home to humans.” It was the most she’s heard him say at once all day. She was surprised, and he seemed to relax just talking about his work. Most people are the opposite…

“If they don’t like people… what makes you different to them?” She asked, slightly confused. Was the D.J. guy wrong? About them both?
Nathaniel shrugged, “Don’t know.” He’d gone back to being tense and quiet. He stood, moving near the mouth of the cave, staring into the dark forest. Stop playing games, little witch. What do you know? A different voice, darker, said from nowhere.
Well I don’t think I’m quite finished playing games just yet. One more round. “Well that was a lovely story, very heartwarming. But I know that isn’t the whole thing. You left out some pretty important parts, like how you’re tied to my dreams and why you’re really connected to hostile wolves. I like the fairy tale version of the guy finding his place among animals but I think I’d like the “Grimm” story more.” She said in a teasing tone, trying her hardest to let him know that she thinks she knows the answer to this sad little never-tell riddle without actually saying it.
He didn’t move, or breathe or look at anything. His eyes were blank as a piece of paper. But his mind… it was in chaotic disarray. How exactly could she know so much? It’s like she knows that I’m that damned black wolf. He thought, waves of guilt pouring off of him. He didn’t want to tell her, he just wanted to do things right, make amends for mistakes. That girl die a long time ago. I don’t know how she saw it but it is definitely to do with her…witchy powers. There’s no way I’m telling her anything. There’s too much on the line with the fanged cops on the lookout for us.
His mind virtually shut down, leaving them in an awkward silence that seemed to span for years. His eyes were locked on the dying fire but they weren’t seeing it. Rebecca pulled the jacket tighter around her, trying to lock out the cold. She sighed, shaking her head. “I’m not going to force you to tell me everything. I was just looking for a better idea of who I’m dealing with.” She paused, letting him take in what she said as his mind began to work again. “But I think I have a pretty good idea of who you are.” She concluded in a vague tone.
He was about to say something when D.J. appeared next to him. They nodded at each other in acknowledgement and Nathaniel left the view of the cave, moving into the trees and leaving them on their own. “Dare I ask what you said to him?” D.J. asked, adding some wood to the fire. The light made the cave a little bit brighter and the outside a little bit darker.
“I kind of, sort of, told him that I knew about him…” She shrugged, putting her cold drink on the ground beside her.
He thought about it before laughing quietly. “Yup, that explains the sour mood.” Seiri has started to wake up, her eyes opened slightly and scanned the cave before closing. Only a dream…its only a dream. Then she went back to sleep. “I heard you talking about your nightmare. Sounds pretty freaky, to have two different dreams about one dog two nights in a row.” He said quietly, as to not re-wake the girl, thought they both know she’s deaf.
Short but Two updates in a month is pretty sweet. And its two pages so no complaints here =D pg.71
