Kipcha couldn't see her surroundings because of the booths and crates, but she knew that Kona was also somewhere in this mess, and if they risked their company too long, it would prove troublesome. Listening intesely, she waited for the section to empty of people, when it did, she hurriedly whispered to Kaya, "Run across the walk area and hide under that tarp," pointing to a grey tarp used to cover the fruits from the sun, "wait until I say go to dart under it." No more than four seconds passed before Kipcha said, "Go now!"

Silver sighed and rested her head on the ground, watching several feet walk past. Suddenly someone ducked to look in her box. "Hey, we have a stray here!" the man shouted. In a panic, Silver snapped at his face and charged out of the box. She looked desperately for a place to hide as the man lumbered forward to catch her. She darted across the road again and heard a sharp squealing as the car coming at her tried to stop. She froze i npanic and then everything went black. With a thud, Silver hit the ground.

Kaya sprinted to the tarp, but changed course when another stray was hit by a car. It was her own breed, too. Kaya ran over and defensivly protected the limp body. The dog was still breathing, and she wasn't letting anyone near.

Kona had separated from Kipcha, but could still hear and smell her under another table. Kona waited until she heard a thump on the table above her, and, quick as a cobra, she twisted her head behind her and picked up what she tasted like a hunk of meat. She heard some confused human noises and smiled. She'd snagged a hunk of rump roast. She held the cool meat in her mouth, looking out from under the table's covering for Kipcha.

Suddenly, she heard the squeal of wheels and heard another thump. Her stomach dropped. She knew that sound. The meat fell from her jaws and she slipped under the next table. "Kipcha!" she said quietly, realizing she'd picked the right table. "Who got hit?" she asked.

Kipcha's heart leaped with sudden anxiety, with a burst of speed, she sprinted over to Silver, despite the angry yelling of the startled humans that gathered to search for more strays and to remove the hit dog from the road. "Kona, quickly! Return to our ally!" Kipcha shouted, straining to get Silver aboard her back so to relocate her to safety. "Kaya, follow us," Kipcha called back, and hurriedly walked into a darkened ally, this sudden act was out of pure terror of what might happen if she had simply ran away. The humans simply stood and watched his seemingly bizzare sight.

"Oh, boy! It's Christmas!" "What did Santa bring us?!" The lid to the box was suddenly opened. "Look! A puppy!" Silver opened her eyes to a little boy and a little girl looking down at her. "Mom, dad!" the girl squealed, "Santa brought us a puppy!" Silver wagged her tail and the little boy picked her up. "What are you guys going to name her?" the father asked. "Um... How about Princess?!" the little girl said. "NO! That's an icky name!" the boy shouted. "How about... Destroyer?" "That's a boy name!" "How about Silver?" the mother interrupted. "Look at her shiny silver coat." "Yeah!" the children yelled together. Silver barked in her little puppy voice. "Hey! Listen to her!" the little girl said. "She sounds cute!" The little girl and the boy played with Silver all day, and Silver was happy.

~One year later~

"We're moving on Monday."
Silver heard the two parents talking in the other room.
"What do we do about the dog? She's gotten so big." "I didn't think she'd get this big." "I don't think we can take her with us." "But the children love her so much!" "I hate to do this to them." "I guess we'll have to leave her here."
Silver didn't understand human, but it sounded like something bad.

~Monday~

"Alright kids, c'mon! Get in the car."
Silver watched the humans load into the small vehicle. She waited patiently for the humans to come unchain her so she too could climb in. The engine started up. "Wait! Where are you going?!" Silver barked jumping up. They were leaving without her. "Wait!" She pulled on the chain as the car began to back out of the driveway. "Don't leave!" The chain finally snapped as the car got to the road. She raced after them the hard road burning her paws. The car kept getting farther and farther away. "No!" A screeching noise filled the air as the car coming at Silver tried to stop. Everything went black.

The barking of many dogs brought Silver back to reality. She couldn't move or see. She whimpered feebly.

Kaya followed, gently nudging Silver up each time she fell. The humans seemed so amazed that dogs could care this much. "And they think we're the dumb ones", Kaya laughed, feeling the stares on her back as they bolted away. She felt as though she could run all day. Vaugely, she wondered if any of her siblings with owners could run like her. Kaya decided that they probably couldn't. She laughed again.

Kona was cut off as Kipcha raced out from under the table. "Kipcha! Kipcha don't!" Her paws scrabbled on the pavement as she took off behind her. There was a husky in the street, obviously stunned. Crap... Kona stopped at the side of the road. If we stay here much longer, we're all screwed People were starting to take out cell phones and dial. Her paws twitched as she debated. If I run now, I'll be safe....but... She groaned. I do owe Kipcha.

Kona steeled her nerves and ran into the street, she took a place next to Kipcha and another dog; presumably the one Kipcha had been with, and pushed her shoulder underneath. With the husky finally off the ground, she grunted, "Let's go, we gotta get out of here". She began straining forward. "We'll take her to Kipcha's!" She pulled as hard as she could, the party moving across the street toward the safety of an alley.

Silver put one paw in front of the other, fighting her way through the crowed. Her vision was ebbed in red and she felt blood pulsing through several wounds on her side. She fell once, and another dog nosed her to her feet. She stumbled a few times on the way to the alley, but didn't fall again. "Wha..." she rasped, trying to make sense of her surroundings.

The ever happy Kaya was not happy. She heard what seemed like a thousand dial tones behind her. They couldn't get caught. She heard Silver begin to speak. "No, don't." she said. "It's just gonna waste your energy." she told her.

"Both of you stop talking" Kona snapped. "We've got to get well away from here. Just past Kipcha's den is a construction site. Thanks to the rain last night, they won't be working there today. If we can get there, I can figure something out." The collie's brow was furrowed. This wasn't something she ever did. All these other dogs were were more mouths to feed and more bodies to take up room. She looked at Kipcha, struggling beside her to move the dead weight of the husky.

Her stomach twisted. I've got to get away from these dogs, and soon

Silver looked at the other dogs. She wasn't used to other strays being so compassionate. Usually they snapped at her and chased her off. She focused on getting as far from possible from the humans, but a disturbing thought went through her mind. That makes two times I've been hit by a car. And this time... this time I'm not gonna make it. I've cheated death once already, and this time he's not letting go.

Kaya obeyed the collie with a frown on her face. She didn't like being told what to do. She ran closer to Kipcha and helped to support Silver. She felt her tounge roll out of her mouth, saliva dribbling down. Hey, I know where we are. Kaya thought. There was the highway that led to her tunnel. She wouldn't have to stay here with these other dogs. "My tunnel is just down that road. I can take her," Kaya lifted her head to point to the dog on her and Kipcha's backs."...to there. It'll be harder to find us if we split up." Kaya said, hoping not to be told to be quiet again.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 17, 2010 11:38 am

Kona was losing her patience. "No. Dog-catchers check easily accessible tunnels first. We need to get into a completely enclosed area." Her eyebrow twitched. "And if we split up, you'll have to leave her alone there while you get food and water, she'll be easy prey." She turned to Kipcha, hoping to get some backup.

The collie had never had to deal with any dogs for much longer than a day, and the day was already taking a downturn. She knew that this dog to her side didn't like taking orders, but if the injured husky were to survive the night, she needed to listen.

Kaya huffed. This collie just didn't get it. It wasn't easily accessable at all. "Listen, I've been living in that tunnel for a good 4 months. That place is hard to get too. Besides, a construction area has falling nails and bricks and other stuff. I'm going to my tunnel." Kaya defieyed(sp?). She sighed, because she couldn't leave with Silver's weight on her back.
