((don't have to PM me, I had technical difficulties. And I won't be able to post again 'til sunday night at the earliest.))
Pyro cursed profusely as she lead her horse back into town. "Stupid lump. You run perfectly fine away from battle but when I need you to run you couldn't race a dead slug." Bale just snorted at her. "I missed that entire thing because of you!" Pyro vented. "An entire night wasted following your blundering! You're lucky I need a horse! I woulda left you out there for the wolves and wargs!" Pyro continued in this fashion down the street until she came to the front of a cathedral. Her stomach growled. The food from the previous night had worn off and she was hungry again. "Beg for some charity and eat... or keep my dignity and starve." Pyro stood there and stared at the building for a moment. "Starve." She decided out loud and went to continue walking.

Rayel started, wondering if the bard could read her mind. She began to regret not paying more attention about defense against mind readers. Mentally she returned to the chapel with the old priest with jowls so large it was a wonder he didn't trip over them.
"Concentrate on something mundane," the man drolled in her memory, "and devote your entire mind on it. Something like washing windows or cleaning floors."
Obediently Rayel tried to concentrate on the man's lecture, knowing of nothing more boring. But like she had before, the knight couldn't pay attention. Realizing she had been silent too long, the woman said the first question that popped into her head, "You got to choose your body?"

((heh. I get the net occasionally, but I can't garuntee that I'll be back before the 11/12th))
Meri laughed and dropped the piece of meat from his fork. "Yes, I got to choose my body. I can alter my form at will, but I must spend some time in my own form once a week. This weakens my resolve because of the rage that eats at my mind."
He stuffed the piece of meat into his mouth and chewed. "Anything else you wish to know knight? Would you like me to heal your dragon burns in return for your kindness?"

Rayel's eyes widened impossibly, her knuckes growing white as she gripped the edge of the pew tightly. "You can do that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible even in the dead silence of the church.

((I understand. Maybe I'll hold out till near the end of the RP in granting that, giving the following reason.
Rhina, please join us. The RP is kinda dead and in need of regular RPers.))
Meri nodded, a slight smile on his face. "I can, but it would take my entire concentration and I would probably slip into the frenzy that is already gripping my heart. Then, healing your burns would be pointless if I was to give them back a minute later." He shook hie head and swallowed the piece of meat. He sat for a moment, eating quietly. After his seond moutful, he looked back at the paladin.
"Since you didn't ask, I'll tell you about Kranthas anyway. He is a lich, and undead creature, of some power, even over dragonkind and the elven high mages. He is about 700 years old and his power has only grown." He shifted to a more comfortable position.
"Kranthas offered me Lichdom, which would give me a few things. It would change my magical energies to that of unlife, give me undeath and eternal freedom from the frenzy."
((Will finish later, is 2am.))

<*sighs with relief*>
Rayel closed her gaping mouth, fighting back the bile rising in her throat. Quietly, doing her best to hide her disappointment, she asked, "Why would he do that? I was under the impression that liches had a tendency to kill each other off. Why would he bring another into the ranks?"
Her knuckles remained dead white.

Meri growled lightly. "Because Kranthas is extremly powerful and makes each dracolich a slave to his powers. He plans to rule the world with the dracolich's as his underlings." He shrugged. "Kranthas seems to enjoy spreading death and unlife through the world. Each converted dragon helps him, for his rewards are all the treasure in their domains that he gives them."
He sighed. "As each dragon becomes a lich, the magical energies tied into it's very existance change. For instance, a red dragon is tied into the destructive fire element. When a red dragon dies, this element is diminished, but not usually by very much. When a red dragon becomes a lich, not only does the element become diminished, the element of death and unlife becomes stronger, increasing Kranthas' powers."
Meri shook his head. "Kranthas has enough power to alow control over many undead creatures without draining him. When he gets a dragon to become a lich, he dumps some of that burden on them to take the strain of controlling the lich. The bolstering of the death element also helps him and strengthens his control."

"Right," Rayel said, her voice still dead and even, "So what do we do about this?" She smiled grimly as Meri gave her one of his unreadable looks, "Yes, I'm coming. You know very well I was listening to your conversation with the wizards, and I can't think of anything better to do this week. Month. How ever long this takes."
"Besides," she said, her smile growing more relaxed and genuine, "I'm holding you to your promise. You're not getting rid of me now."
"So," Rayel's brow furrowed beneath her helmet, "could Kranthas be behind this frenzy to drive dragons into his army? I know the wizards said it was elven magic, and I must confess not to know anything about the arcane arts, but I can't help but think this works to the advantage of the lich."

Meri actually smiled and a little of his accent creeped back into his words.
"The frenzy is the byproduct of the first time dragons went into their beserker fury. That one went on fer many years before the elven mages found a way to stop it. Unfortuantly, they couldn't get rid of it entirely. The way I see it, Kranthas has found out when this one was to happen and planned to alter the magic used in it, so he could gt dragons to join him." He shook his head. "Anyway, that is no' our concern at the moment. What is, however, is my rampaging cousins."
He finished what was left in his bowl in one bite and slowly stood, leaning against the back of a pew. He scooped up his sword belt and wrapped it around his waist.
"I will meet up with a couple of friends who will be able to help us when we go to certain places. People that are outcasts or don't actually like me." He smiled at the paladin. "It shall make fer an interestin' ride indeed."

"Right," Rayel drawled, standing up herself, groaning mentally. Part of her considered returning to wearing splint mail.
"Do you have a ride?" she asked, her mind leaving her sore legs and going to her steed, still in the inn's stables. She hoped she had left him enough water; the night was surprisingly warm.

Meri laughed. "I not be needin' one, but it would be wise to get me a horse, fer I am less resistant to te frenzy in me natural form." He smiled and pulled out a small bag of gold coins from a small pocket. "N' I can be buyin' me own horsy too."

She nodded, a light smile playing at her lips beneath her helmet. "Father," she cried, "Can we purchase one of your horses? I know you have them for knight training."
The priest entered the room shaking his head. "Shush," he scolded, his grin betraying his stern manner, "this is a house of God."
"Sorry Father," Rayel apologized unconvincingly, "May we buy a horse?"
"Certainly my child," he said, abandoning all pretense of scolding her, "the stables are right outside."
"There are no better horses than those trained for knighthood," Rayel explained to Meri. Seeing his attempt to pay the priest she shook her head, pointing to the donation box. "He won't accept it," she whispered. 'So," she said loudly, "where are these friends of yours? Anymore dragons?"

Meri shook his head as he placed a couple of coins in the donation box. The church was always a mystery to him.
"As soon as I get outside I'll be able to contact them, although som might not be able to respond. And yes, there will most likely be a dragon amoung my companions."
He followed the knight out through a side door and into the stables, where a few large, impressive horses were. The closest, the smallest of the lot, shied away from Meri. He frowned, but realised that the horses were the best creatures for discerning what a creature actually was. Pity that they weren't more intelegent.

Rayel was glad of her helmet; she doubted Meri would appreciate her amusment. Still she turned away, afraid of her eyes giving her away. The paladin busied herself with her own horse rubbing his muscles gently.
Perhaps it hasn't been a wise idea to recommend knight trained horses. They had been trained to recognize "evil" races, usually a very useful trait.
"Here," she said, offering Meri Cheroin's reins. "The brute will carry anything for a carrot. I can manage on another horse."
