Anyone know much about MTG online software? I've been trying out the official MTG online (for free). . . getting my a** handed to me but learning.

I would like to play online as my allergies are keeping me in the house and away from a lot of activities. . . but my overall feeling is that I don't think the pricing is fair with MTG online. . . I mean you're getting no physical cards and paying the same thing. And if some A-hole comes along and says you were violating the TOS there's no reason they can't just kick you off and bbye cards and much money (whether it was true or not).

I'm using Win98 until next month. If that helps any.
Here's a very inexpensive answer.

Try out Magic Workstation.

It's an online program that doesn't cost a cent. Once you download it, you'll have every Magic card at your disposal to make decks that you can play online against other players.

How to download
1.) Click 'Magic Workstation' or go to www.magicworkstation.com to get to the homepage.
2.) Click Downloads.
3.) Download the program.
4.) Go to the MWS Game page HERE, and download the Card Database. (It says up to Future Sight, but you'll get tenth in a nother step)
5.) Install Magic Workstation to program along with the database. (In that order)
6.) Find the program file you installed it to, and click on 'Autoupdate MWS' to get 10th.

For instructions on how to use the program go HERE

Okay, thanks, I 'll check it out.

I also read in the forums for MTGO that you can get a lot of cards for about 1 cent by trading for tickets. So I'm thinking about that one still, and will look into both of them.

i started playing magic 3 years ago casually. but here is my problem list:

1. i learned from someone who seemed to have his own set of rules
2. i was so casual, i didnt buy cards, so had the same worthless deck for 6 months.
3. my decks all seem to be too big
4. when i learned to play(sorta) there didnt seem to be as many funky rules for the cards
5. i recently got about 800 cards from a guy who was quitting magic for $5, but need some deck building advice. i'm leaning towards red/black

A1. I had that problem too! If your playing in big groups like I do at college alot of groups have their own way of translating the very confusing rules of magic. There really is no way to fix this I suggest you read all the rules your self to get a better understanding of them and if something someone you play with says sounds off..call a Judge..I have one on speed dial!

A2. The only time I EVER buy cards is when I draft, everything I main deck at the moment though I haven't bought my self twas given to me as gifts. Not buying your cards saves you alot of money but that also means you have no choice on whether you get something you need or not.

A3. My decks also I am told are too large, but do not fear young one it's okay! Technically there really isn't a card limit but most players play with forty to sixty cards, the reason your probably told yours is too big is because the more cards you have the less chance you have of getting the cards you need. Decks such as drawing decks or this really evil deck based around Twilights Call are okay decks to have a large number of cards mainly because their all about drawing and discarding. In Unhinged there is a card that says if you have 200 cards in your deck you win. (Unhunged though is not legal in normal game play) So don't worry about teh size of your deck, if you seem to never be getting teh cards you need have someone experienced look through your deck and tell you what you might not need in it, that's helped me alot.

A4. Don't worry the rules may seem a little funky but once you get a genius in to translate them their not so bad, alot of places though don't use all the rules. The way my group and I play we have one set of rules we use for tournaments and one we use for just regular playing, we have specific rules we use when Two Headed Dragoning and drafting and such. Practice and more experience with magic will help you in learning the different interpretations of rules we have now and those to come.

A5. As soon as my friend joins and if someone else hasn't helped you yet I'll ask her to help you. Until recently I was only using Blue and White. She main decks Red and Black so she has more experience with building red and black decks.

i appreciate your help but i actually forgot to mention that only my sister, myself and one friend i know play magic in the area that i know of. we just moved to a new area and i cant get to the hobby store without a 45 minute drive(i'm 15 and have no car). my deck is not much bigger than sixty cards, i believe it's between 70 and 80. i'll post the deck configuration if you'd like me too. it seems my main deck problem is that they're unbalanced with mana costs that are too high for practical purposes.

ok i can help about the black/red because i too am making a black red but beforei help you i must admit...black and red aint really my deal at all and all my decks have been green and the only main reason i got a good feel for black was through the fact my first deck was based on the eventide deck named "death march" which was a green/black thatr and my most recent deck is set in the new "naya" which is red/green/white with green being the primary color.
the main thing you want to do is study red and black decks and there strenthgs...i have noticed red is a good "ping"er and by that i mean just damage through card effects and allot of things having to do with damage dealing, black is a more death and other various uses of black magic.
Red also uses alot of goblins and dragons...goblins i have noticed are almost joke creatures that can have fairly good effects when used right while dragons are the big papas of magic...
death uses alot of zombies and i advise using alot of cards with the effect of "devour" and "unearth" which basically let you eat cards and use them to power up other cards and then bring the eaten cards back which let you strengthen your reds while keeping your black always on the offense as well
