Painted Faces
Word Count: 499

The girl stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom. Everyone in her family shared this bathroom, which at times could be trying. Even now, her mind was thinking about the fact she'd need to hurry so her Mommy or Daddy could use the bathroom next if they needed it.

And given the delicate task at hand, it was a bit nerve-wrecking to think someone could come bursting in while she was working. Her hand trembled slightly over the makeup sponge at hand. As she worked with the white paint, she couldn't help but think about the yearly issue she'd had with her Daddy for the past 6 years.

Ever since she was 12 years old, Daddy had told her she wasn't allowed to dress up for Halloween anymore. No matter how much the small girl cried, Daddy wouldn't change his mind. She was forbidden to wear any sort of costume. He kept saying she was too big a girl to do such a childish thing.

Considering how much Yvette liked to sew, it was like taking the needle away from a drug addict. Every year, October brought much sadness into the girl's life. The one time when her sewing would be the most useful and most appreciated, and she wasn't even allowed to participate in the festivities.

In front of the mirror, the girl frowned. Even if she was 18 years old and considered an adult, Daddy was still adamant that she couldn't wear a costume. Looking over her now white face, she casually set the sponge down and picked up the clean paintbrush that was laying upon the counter. With a delicate motion, she dipped the brush into some lime green paint.

Things were going to be different this year. She was still going to technically follow her Daddy's request. She'd be wearing one of her favorite dresses. He couldn't get upset at her, because she'd be wearing something she'd normally be allowed to wear out of the house.

Her wrist rolled to form a curling line.

He couldn't get angry at her for wearing really bizarre make-up. It technically wasn't a costume. Just colorful face paint.

She began to dab the paintbrush carefully around her eyes, forming black dots to delicately decorate her face.

Could he?

With a deep sigh, she began to clean up her minor mess in the bathroom, then rather quickly trotted to her bedroom to finish up with her preparations for the Halloween Festival.

She was going with Topher to the festival. She was going to have a good time. And she was going to make sure Daddy didn't see her when she left.

Her heart skipped a beat as she climbed out of her window. The red color of her cheeks were masked by colorful paint. She did everything right. She left Daddy a note and let him know she was going to the carnival with a friend.

Yet she still couldn't help but feel guilty.

Please don't be angry...

Hospital Birthdays and Snow Globes
Word Count: 792

Why did any of this have to happen? The girl didn't know what felt worse? The fact she had to be hospitalized or the fact she ruined what was supposed to be the most special moment in her life! How could she have been so stupid? Considering who she was, she actually didn't find it surprising she had managed to ruin her own special moment. The first thing she'd do was blame herself!

She had been fading in and out as she had been rolled into the hospital, but that had been simply due to the lack of oxygen. She didn't have time to think about what she had done. All she had felt was fear. What was going to happen to her? The uncertainty of her situation overwhelmed her already fragile mind. When she was able to hold her purple eyes open, they were overflowing with salty water. The girl looked like an absolute disaster. She didn't feel much better either. She was gasping so hard for air, that she didn't even notice the sudden pricks against her skin as various needles were lodged under her skin. Her eyes eventually felt pretty heavy and eventually she was able to rest.

No dreams followed. The world was dark and silent, despite all of the noise going on around her. It took her hours to wake up again. When she did, the world was all blurry. She could make out patches of color. There was a tan blotch with a small touch of brown blended towards the top. There was a slightly paler blur of color with a really dark section to it. She'd eventually figure out that those colors were her parents. She was still too groggy to really think about things.

Yet with time, as she began to recover, the girl was given plenty of time to think. In fact, she had almost a week's worth of thinking. Each day brought more questions to mind.

Some were just simple questions nearly any teenager would probably think of. How stupid did Topher think she was? Did any of her friends know what had happened? What did Mommy and Daddy think?

Yet, some were more pressing. Who would have remembered her if something had happened? If she had died? How sad would Mommy and Daddy have been if she had died? Again.

Laying in that bed just made her sadder and sadder and sadder. Each day was filled with lots of sleep, lots of thinking, and lots of worrying about things that could have been. The days felt so long, even if she slept most of the day away. She lost almost all sense of time.

Until that one day.

Her eyes managed to roll open, the focus not adjusting right away. She made out a slightly pale blue blob upon the table near her bedside and a flatter white blur. They hadn't been there the day before. With her arm that wasn't hooked up to any sort of hospital contraption, she rubbed at her eyes, rubbing away the blurs. When she pulled her hand away, she saw something she had completely forgotten about.

My... my snowglobe...

With her little fingers, she managed to reach out far enough to grab the little white card next to it. The writing was quite familiar. Her eyes almost started crying right away when she read what had been written.

Happy birthday Sweetie! Love, Mommy and Daddy

She was 19 years old, and she was stuck in the hospital because she had done something so stupid. So horridly stupid and thoughtless and inconsiderate! The girl let out a small whimper as she set her card on the desk again before slipping the snow globe in between her fingers. It was vaguely comforting to know that even with all of the commotion, her prize from the mall hadn't been smashed into pieces. Her fingers brushed over the edges and without even realizing it, found something that stuck out slightly. Her finger brushed it over and over again, before eventually pausing long enough to realize it was there.

Mmm...?

Clumsily she fumbled to turn the key. She really didn't know what to expect.

When all of a sudden, a quiet song played for her. The hospital was generally quiet at times, but even now, all other sounds, no matter how small or loud, went completely ignored as the simple melody played. Even in all of her prior sadness, with this simple song playing, it seemed as if everything wasn't nearly as bad as she had been fretting for that whole week.

...not so bad...

When the girl's parents returned to the bedroom, they'd find the girl asleep once again, fingers carefully cradling the snow globe up to her body.

Welcome to the Real World
Word Count: 843

It was time to go home!

Yvette was thrilled. Certainly, plenty of people had visited her while she was at the hospital. The girl never felt lonely. Bored, yes. Embarrassed. Definitely! Never lonely though. During her short stay at the hospital, she had managed to make a pretty decent length scarf with the power of crocheting. And now, once more, she was going home. It was almost like the previous year, when she had to go home after the organ ring incident. Daddy once more had insisted she had to be wheeled out in a wheelchair. The girl let Daddy do as he wanted with a gentle sigh and a soft smile. 19 years old, and Daddy still treated her like that child she was when she was 10 years old.

Safely, in her bag, she had wrapped up her soft yarn scarf around the memento she had from her first date. That beautiful little snow globe with the princess inside. Even if the snow globes had lost a majority of the appeal they had only weeks before, the girl still was absolutely enchanted with the treasure. Maybe it was because there were still some pleasant memories attached to it due to her winning it while with Topher? Or maybe it was just because she usually didn't get nice things for free? Either way, there was still some sort of childish delight that the young adult felt when she secretly unwrapped it and took a peek while Daddy drove them home.

"Honey, you got something in the mail that I think you will like!" The large man at the wheel turned for a moment to face his daughter with a grin. "When you get home, you'll see what I am talking about!"

Big eyes looked to her Daddy as she carefully tucked her little snow globe away again. "
Is it really something good?"

"Oh, I am certain it is the best!" he laughed out as they went around a turn. It wasn't long until the tires of the pickup truck were rolling over the gravel of their driveway. The large man rushed out of his seat and to the girl's side to try and escort her to the house.

"
Daddy, you are being silly!!!" Even with a few giggles, the girl was kind enough to allow the large man assist her into the house.

Once she was in the house, she almost seemed to squirm out of her Daddy's escorting arm, wobbling slightly to one side before scampering to her room. There, on her sewing desk, was the envelope. It wasn't a small envelope, but a larger dark yellow one usually used to ship documents. Yvette took a seat in her chair (a stiff wooden thing that was not even remotely comfortable), fingers touching the edges of the mystery envelope. She forgot to look at the return address (which would have explained a lot) and hesitantly picked up the envelope, her fingers delicately attempting to tear a straight line at one edge. Even with how slowly she had ripped along the edge, she still managed to make it a ragged opening.

Without a word, not even a breath, the girl then tugged out the contents of the envelope. Her eyes barely took a glance before she realized what she had at hand.

"
...oh my god..." She set down the stiff piece of paper, along with the cover letter. In the letter, it explained that after completing the extra semester at Meadowview, she now had earned her diploma. Her fingers crept past her tiny smile to rub away the tears at the corners of her eyes.

From the doorway, Daddy let out a loud gasp. Without any sense of tact, he came trampling in and squished the girl in a huge hug. "Oh baby, THERE IS NO NEED TO CRY! This should be a happy moment, pumpkin! THERE THERE THERE!!!"

"
i-i-it'sokayDaddy! I'mhappy,IswearI'mhappy!!!" the girl squeaked, squirming from the depths of her Daddy's strong hugging arms.

With a big smile, the man pressed his lips against the girl's cheeks, rubbing his scruffy beard against the edges of his daughter's face. "Congratulations, baby doll! Mommy will be thrilled to hear when she gets home from work!" He ran a large finger against one of the tear-trails along the girl's fair cheek before finally releasing his daughter again.

"
Th-thank you Daddy!" As her Daddy went back to his own things, the girl sat herself down on her bed and pulled her bag up onto the bed with her. She pulled out her green and white scarf and unraveled it a bit to reveal her treasure to the world once more. Crawling across her bed, she set the snow globe on the small table nearby. She paused, then a finger came in and turned it just a smidge. "There! With as big a smile as her face could allow, she scuttled back to her spot on the bed and settled back in.

Things were going right for once.

And now, Yvette could finally move on with her life.

The Real World is Mean
Word Count: 791

Yvette was not happy she was working at the mall. These days, all it was doing was reminding her of the fact she was no longer in high school. Sure, the girl had wanted to graduate on time and had been quite devastated when she in fact had to remain at the school for an extra semester. She wanted to move on with her life, and now that she was finally able to start doing it, she only got reminded of all the things she missed.

Such as Prom.

Tonight was such a lonely night while working. The teenagers who usually flooded the mall on a Friday night were all gone. They had gone to the city-wide prom. The previous year, she had been planning with Tara to go to the prom. Glumly, the quiet girl sighed while leaning over the counter.

It wasn't that Yvette had not been invited to go to the prom. No, the school district actually sent out a very formal letter explaining the situation and inviting her to come back for the prom, much like how schools invited graduates to come back for a homecoming dance the following year.

It also wasn't that Yvette didn't have a date or anybody to go with. Tara would have been more than glad to go to the prom with Yvette, since the previous year they had promised each other they'd go. And Topher had called her, bubbling with energy as usual, and asked her to go. He had mentioned something about Eva telling him he needed to experience his prom since it was a "once in a lifetime" event.

What the boy heard on the other end of the phone was probably enough to break a grown man's heart. "
I can't go... I have to work that night..." The girl sounded as if she was about to cry into the receiver.

The evening was rather dull, with perhaps a handful of customers coming into Elizabeth's Secrets. Yvette did her best to try and smile for them, but there was something off with her smile. Even with the upward curve of her lips, the girl seemed distracted and disappointed. When the dark-haired girl's shift had ended, she received a rather sympathetic hug from Mrs. Ortiga.

"Life goes on, Sweety..." she offered kindly before shooing the girl off to her bus.

The girl walked through the empty mall, making her way to the bus, but she could not help but stop in front of one of the department store displays. A bright peacock blue colored dress was upon the mannequin, obviously decked out for the prom season that had just passed. It wasn't that Yvette wanted the dress (it was a lovely color, but not the right style for her), but the girl wanted the event to wear such a dress to. Prom was once in a life time, and she missed it.

Missed it because of stupid work!

With her cheeks turning a blotchy red color, the girl abandoned the display window, as if trying to run away from the feeling of jealousy in her heart. Other girls got to dress up and have fun with their friends and loved ones. Yvette was Cinderella, but no Fairy Godmother would send her to the ball. She stumbled slightly in step, which only reminded her that her own shoes were not made of glass. No, this was the Real World, and this world was such a mean, MEAN place.

Her carriage was a bus that had a schedule to keep, and when she got onto the bus, she found herself a seat by herself and curled up so her feet were on the seat and her knees were pressed up to her face.

When the bus rode up to the stop right by the girl's house, the driver glanced back expectantly. Kindly, the man reminded the girl it was her stop with a simple "Yvette..."

Grudgingly, the girl looked up, her face still just as blotchy as before, but her eyes were a bit redder and a bit wetter than they had been before.

"Ah, looks like you've had one hell of a day. Just keep your chin up, sweety!"

Tiredly, the girl nodded her head slightly before seeming to stumble off of the bus. She somehow managed to make it into her house, and somehow made it past her mother who was crocheting in the living room. She somehow managed to make it into her bedroom and flop down against her bed. Somehow, Miss Kitty managed to find her way in her arms, and now was in the process of being squished by how hard the girl's arms squeezed her.

It was just getting so hard to keep her chin up.

Walking the Walk
Word Count: 680

It had been a while since Yvette had been to the high school in all honesty. Only half a school year, but it felt like it had been longer. Many of the faces of the students were still familiar as she scampered through the crowd of soon to be graduates in the auditorium. One thing that was a disadvantage about using public transportation was the fact she couldn't decide how quickly she got to the school. As she arrived, she was literally greeted with the sound of the Vice Principal on a bullhorn, telling everyone to get into their proper spots in the alphabet. The girl had a momentary frown, since she had wanted to see if she could find Topher amidst the crowd.

Alas, all she could do was shuffle into the line, then put on her gown over her brightly colored dress. When her head peeked out of the hole, she couldn't help but feel as if a few pairs of eyes were upon her. Her cheeks grew rosy, but she didn't say a word as she placed her cap on her head. She couldn't help but remember the fact she'd be seated nowhere near her friends or her sorta-kinda-boyfriend. The letter C was nowhere near the letter W.

It wasn't long before the giant line began to move. The short girl couldn't help but feel a giddy feeling bubbling up in her tummy. The moment they entered the stadium, her purple eyes were already to work on trying to locate her Mommy and Daddy. As she passed the lines of teachers, she kept looking to the seating, eventually managing to locate both of her parents in the middle of the crowds. Shyly, she lifted up a hand and attempted to wave to them both. Maybe they'd see her. She was towards the end of the line, so that did make it easier to see her, right?

After that, she resumed her walk, making her way to her assigned seat. She sat down, but couldn't help but turn back to the crowd again and locate her parents again. Sometimes it was convenient that Daddy was such a big man! She giggled to herself, then turned to face the stage.

Where as many of her peers seemed to find this whole ordeal pretty boring, Yvette was completely absorbed with everything that was happening. The speeches, the performances by various classmates, all of it was absolutely amazing to her. It didn't take long for the names to start getting called. Being the sort of girl she was, she couldn't help but seem to make this whole ordeal a test of her memory. Sure, she didn't exactly have armies of friends, but Yvette was good at putting names with faces. If anything, it kept her entertained during a majority of the name calling. Out of sheer politeness, she coudln't help but clap her hands lightly together for every single name as it was called. However, for familiar names, she clapped twice as hard.

Soon enough they had passed the As and Bs, the Ks and Ls, and soon enough they were approaching the end of the alphabet. When it was time for her row of seats to stand up, she couldn't help but feel as if there was a slight skip in her step. It felt as if her heart began to start beating two times as fast. It probably had something to do with the fact that everyone would be looking at her. As she walked. To the podium. By the time she got to the part where she took her picture, her face was already quite red.

By the time she recovered from her momentary embarrassment spell, she was already back in her seat with the fake diploma. Such an important moment of her life, and she had classically spent it all embarrassed.

At least nobody in the audience could tell. That would be her saving grace. Until the proof of the photo from the podium was mailed to her house. However, that was a story for another day.

Talking with Daddy and Miss Kitty
Word Count: 1,410

Yvette had never been a restless sleeper. Never ever in her entire 19 years alive. Even when she had things on her mind, she was still able to somehow shove those worries out of her head so she could sleep soundly in bed.

There was something about tonight though. No matter how much she willed away the thoughts in her head, something was irritating her. Boy troubles never made her toss in bed. Work problems had never made the girl wrap herself in her blankets like a burrito. Even petty "cat fights" had never made her smoosh her face into Miss Kitty's fluffy plush body in an effort to make sleep come easier.

The girl eventually decided that laying in bed was no helping her at all. So she sat herself upright, looking around her dark room with Miss Kitty sitting in her lap. Miss Kitty in all honesty, had seen better days. Despite all of the care that Yvette and Mommy had taken with that toy, Miss Kitty's age definitely showed. Her fur was no longer the pristine white color that most Hello Kitty toys had, her fur now a sort of dirty beige color. The fur was matted in several spots, and the edges of the kitty's dress were fraying slightly. It had been a blessing that the kitty's owner had been able to sew and mend that dress all these years, but there were only so many times one could fix an outfit before it was impossible to fix any more.

Maybe, just maybe, if Yvette stayed up for a bit, sitting like this, she'd be able to just pass out from exhaustion. It seemed like a good idea at the time, so the girl remained sitting upright, rotating her ankles a bit as if it was some sort of entertainment. She wanted to hum, but even though she was very aware of how quiet her voice was, she still didn't want to risk waking Mommy, who had to wake up for work the next morning. So instead, she just moved her feet as if they were moving to some sort of beat.

It was then that she heard something. Or, at least she thought she heard something. It was hard to tell. Maybe some sort of clicking or chittering or something. Sleepily, she rubbed her eyes and looked about her room. It didn't seem like anything was there. She definitely couldn't see everything, but her eyes had long adjusted to the darkness of her room.

"
...must have been my..."

And then she heard it again. It sounded like it was coming from her sewing desk. Letting out a slightly scared whimper, she made the classic horror movie mistake. She went to investigate. Slipping out of her bed and clutching Miss Kitty even closer to her chest, she made her way to the sewing desk. From what she could see, nothing was different on the top of the desk. It had never been much space to work with, but Yvette had somehow managed all these years to be content with such a small work space. Carefully setting Miss Kitty down in her sewing chair, the girl got on her hands and knees and began to make her way under the small desk. It was really hard to see anything, but maybe something was hiding underneath the desk? With her eyes wide, she began to look about. It was now getting harder to hear anything, with the sound of her heart beating now clouding up her hearing.

In the hallway outside of her room, the light turned on. The crack under Yvette's door easily supplied more light to her room. Such a sudden change jolted the girl into bumping her head rather suddenly on her momentary desktop-ceiling. "
Owwwww...." she whined out, cringing immediately upon the small bit of pain.

Miss Kitty sat there, staring at her with those doll-eyes of hers, saying nothing. Yet Yvette couldn't help but feel as if the toy was criticizing her, and suggesting she get out from under the desk. "
...okay... fine..." she whimpered out as she retreated to more open spaces. When the pain stopped burdening her little head, she scooped up Miss Kitty into her arms and wandered to her bedroom door.

In any other household, a light on in the middle of the night might have been seen as out of the ordinary. However, in the Weaver household, it was quite common. It just meant Daddy had just gotten home from work.

Which meant...

It's ONE AM?!!! Yvette was still tired, yes, but she hadn't imagined that she had been awake long enough for Daddy to come home. Since she was up, she figured she could at least welcome the man home. Cautiously, she opened her door a crack, peering out to see what Daddy was doing. It was hard to see, but she could make out Daddy and a newspaper. That was something she was allowed to interrupt, right?

The girl daringly pushed the door open a bit more, then eventually stepped out into the living room, which was practically right behind her bedroom door. Sometimes it was pretty convenient that their house was so small, because that meant there were fewer places for people to hide. In a quiet voice, the girl made her presence known. "
Daddy...?" She hugged onto Miss Kitty and made her way to the scratchy couch the man was sitting on.

"Oh, baby! Was I too noisy? Did I wake you?" The man kept his voice down quiet, but his genuine concern was making it difficult for him to keep his quietest.

The girl sat herself on the couch next to him and shook her head from side to side. "
No Daddy, it wasn't you. I just can't sleep very well tonight..." Her mouth formed a little tired frown.

The man set his paper down on the arm of the couch, then placed the back of his hand upon the girl's forehead. "...no temperature..." he said, glancing to the girl's face, which flushed the moment he made such an assessment. Since his first attempts at figuring the answer to the solution had failed, he asked the next most obvious thing. "Is there something on your mind, sweetie?"

The girl's head shook from side to side again. "
No, I don't think there is..." She rubbed at her eyes, but then eventually forced herself to hold out the toy she had been hugging out. "Miss Kitty wants a good night kiss!"

Oh, how that man smiled as his daughter made such a request. If there were things he appreciated, it would be things such as this. When his little girl was a much littler girl, she would ask him to give Miss Kitty a kiss every night before going to bed. Back then, he didn't have to work in the evenings like he did now. Back then, they truly had a more normal lifestyle. He could see his wife and his daughter. He could enjoy eating dinner with them. He could tuck his tiny daughter into her bed before joining his wife in bed with a good book. The things one appreciated, but took for granted at the time. "Of course, Pumpkin!" He puckered his lips and gave that toy a kiss right on the plastic-button nose.

"
She says 'thank you.'" the girl confirmed.

"I am glad to hear it." The man stood himself up so there would be more room on the couch for the girl. Picking up his newspaper, he rolled it up and tapped it lightly on his daughter's head. "Hopefully you both go to sleep soon!"

"
I'm sorry Daddy..."

The man sighed and shook his head. "No, I'm sorry." Despite the words his daughter had said, he knew he had woken her up on accident. She was always too kind. Reaching into a nearby box behind the couch, he pulled out a crocheted blanket that his wife had made. He set it upon the backing of the couch.

"I hope you sleep well you two."

"
We will, Daddy."

The man exited the living room, and the girl remained on the couch. It took less than 10 minutes for the girl to manage to fall asleep. Sure, the couch was an itchy thing that she usually didn't like sleeping on, but whatever had been keeping her up wasn't bothering her in this new spot. Maybe it was all just in her head.

Maybe.

Little Miss Sicky
Word Count: 592

Yvette was not sick. She'd tell you this herself. She had just been having problems sleeping.

Lots of problems.

For a day or two, she had been able to pull off falling asleep on the couch in the living room. Yet, even such a simple solution to her problem didn't last forever. It wasn't long before she was tossing and turning on the couch too, bundled up in that blanket her mother had crocheted. It was lucky if she managed to get 4 hours of rest, which was about half the amount of time she needed to function normally during the day.

When Mommy woke up for work, she proceeded quietly to getting ready. As she passed through the living room, she easily noticed her daughter was on the couch, slumped into an upright position. The woman approached and leaned over to see if the girl was sleeping in an awkward position or if she was awake. Unfortunately, it was the latter.

Yvette had given up on trying to sleep at 4 am and grabbed herself her drawing utensils. In the two or so hours between then and now, she had done a rather lovely still life drawing of the small, cheap television set they owned.

The woman kindly asked "You did not get to sleep again?"

"
I tried Mommy... I really tried..." It looked as if the girl was going to burst into tears with such a simple question.

The woman could easily see the signs that her daughter was indeed going through some rough times. Pushing aside the blanket she had once crocheted for the couch, she leaned in and pulled the girl in for a hug. In a calm voice, Mommy reassured "I know Yvette. You've been trying very hard." Her thin fingers found their way to the base of the child's neck and stroked gently.

As predicted, the dam seemed to burst, the daughter easily starting to sob tiredly into her mother's shoulder. Her eyes had long felt dry, so it was a bit of a comfort to feel the tears bring moisture back to what had felt like a desert.

"You've been going into work each day, despite how little rest you get. I admire you for how responsible you have been over the past few months. However, now you need to be responsible to yourself, Yvette. It is up to you, but I would honestly suggest you call out sick."

Amidst the sniffles, a few quiet words could be heard. "
...but I'm not sick..."

"Yvette, you need to look out for your health. Exhaustion isn't caused by germs, but it does make you sick if it lingers too long." Mommy planted a kiss on the girl's head before finally releasing the child from the hug. "I need to get ready for work. Please do consider what I am asking though." With that, the woman made her way to the family bathroom so that she could continue on with her morning regiment.

The young adult remained somewhat slumped up against the couch, the world passing her by for two more sleepless hours.

At approximately 8 am, the girl made the call. "
...I'm sorry Mrs. Ortiga. I can't come in to work today. I'm not feeling very well, so I can't come in..." At least she was calling before anybody got into work for the day. It meant that her boss might have enough time to call someone in to cover her shift.

Yvette was not sick. She'd tell you this herself, but today, she was staying home.
