For a second, everything went quiet, Brandon could hear that high pitched signal sound that you sometimes heard when everything was so quiet, that it was loud.

Jason was on the floor, and Lindsay, reluctantly beside him. He hadn't noticed Annah's presence until a small gush off wind came from the direction of the bathroom.

What had he just done?

Punched the guy who was sleeping with the girl, who happened to be Annah's former best friend, who was letting him- a stranger- and Annah stay for the night.

Good move, loser.

And as quickly as everything had just happened, noise came rushing back into the room from Lindsay, shouting at him, though it was mostly inaudible. He stepped back out of the room and past Annah, only catching a glimpse of the fear in her eyes before deciding he had done enough. "..I'm sorry." he muttered to her in a whisper, as he turned on his heel and made his way out to the door.

He pushed the door open and started down the creaky porch steps before feeling a heavy weight rugby tackle him down the rest of them, sending them both landing harshly on the concrete city street. "Oof!" Brandon felt the wind get pushed out of him and struggled breathing for a second as he held his arms out in an attempt to stop Jason from mauling him to death with his pretty boy fists.

"Mother ********!" Jason was yelling at him, throwing punch after punch. Brandon pushed him back, managing to get one hit back at the guy. "Don't move an inch, douchebag." Jason's pained face was replaced with one full of smug pride as pulled a rusty looking blade from his pocket and held it down against his neck. Brandon pressed himself back against the ground and stared up at Jason. Greaaat.

As Brandon passed her, Annah stood still. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to do. Did she owe it to Lindsay to stay with her? Comfort her?

She had offered her and Brandon a bed for the night. But the backstabbing b***h was ******** her ex!

Her mind was made up when she watched Jason stumble to his feet and run after Brandon.
Her heart stopped as she shoved Lindsay back, who was trying to get passd her. Annah was hauling a** towards the front door and out of it. She got there, just as the knife came out.

"You get the ******** off him Jason!" She was coming down the stairs and over to them. "You deserve what you got, hell you deserve worse."

Lindsay was coming out, crying her eyes out. But she had a lamp in her hand. Old, lamp shade ripped and tattered. Her shaking hand was offering the object to Annah. She took it, smashing it against Jasons head.

He barely cut Brandons skin as he fell over. Annah grabbed Brandons hand, silently thanking Lindsay. She wasn't sure if Jason knew that Lindsay had actually helped or not.

All she knew was that her and Brandon needed to get the hell out of there.

Now.

Brandon shut his eyes as he saw a lamp come crashing down behind Jason's head.

He felt a slight sting from the knife as Jason's body fell limp, rolling off his body and onto the ground.

He looked up at the dim light of the streetlamp above was suddenly blocked by Annah's face as she grabbed his hand and helped him up. Before he could looked round to see Lindsays face, she was already walking them back to his car. He managed to catch a glimpse of Lindsay looking down at Jason before shaking her head and walking back into her house. Brandon looked back at Annah in front of him and noticed the setting, he didn't know what time it was, but it was night- he knew that much. Their stuff was still in the car, so that was alright, they didn't have to go back, but where were they going to go now?

He stopped walking and kept hold of Annah's hand so she stopped to, and when she did, he pulled her towards him and looked at her bloodshot eyes."I'm sorry." he said quietly, fighting back the urge to hug her in case she was really just walking him to his car, only to leave him and go back to Jason.

Annah was fuming pissed. She could turn around, go back to Jason and strangle the guy if she really wanted to risk that.

Her legs were moving fast, she didn't even stop to think about the 'what if' Brandon was stabbed. No, she was just thinking about getting out of here before more trouble started.

But she was pulled to a stop and turned around to see Brandon stopping... and apologizing. "Don't be sorry. Its not your fault. Jason's a d**k, lets just keep moving."

Annah turned back around and pulled him along, not bothering to look back at Jason or Lindsay... or her house for that matter.

Brandon sighed quietly to himself as she carried on speeding ahead.

As they approached the car, he pulled out the car keys from his pocket and unlocked the doors, before sliding into the front seat. Brandon started the car as soon as she got in and started driving out of the street and followed the route they took to get into this shithole. He had no idea where they were going, or what was going to happen with the two of them now, but he guessed anything was better than staying within a mile radius of Jason.

Brandon glanced at Annah for a second before looking back to the dark streets ahead of him. "What now?" he asked. It was still pitch black out, but he was pretty sure the sun would begin rising within the next hour- at least it'd be a good view to drive to.

Annah sighed heavily as she got into the car and folded her legs indian style in the seat.
She looked over at Brandon when he questioned her.

Really, what was there to say? She could make up some grand plan. Get great jobs, make s**t tons of money, and buy a place. A world of rainbows and sunshine. But, she wasn't one for silver linings.

Instead, she remained quiet for around ten minutes, just complete silence clung to them as Brandon drove along out of town.

"Are you sleepy?" She finally asked, her voice cracking slightly.
Now, she was wide awake and deep in thought. "I could always drive." Granted, she didn't know where they were going now. Or where they could go even.

What the hell were they going to do? Gah! This was such a mess.

Brandon thought about what she said. Hm. Was he tired? Not really. Did he feel like shutting his eyes and taking a break from the world?

"Yeah." he replied, looking ahead at somewhere to pull in. "Okay."

No cars about, he pulled up at the side of the road and put the brakes on, before getting out of the car. He walked over to the front of the car and leant on the hood for a bit, taken aback but the sudden sunrise that seemed to appear up ahead.

[[timskip in the next few posts? could timeskip just a few weeks or something. Was thinking. We could have it like, theyve drifted slightly, now that theyve found a place and the two of them jobs, Annahs more outgoing in a way, so she wouldve made friends at work and stuff, Brandon, still not so much. Annnd. What dyou think og the idea of Annah get all preggerzs nd stuff from like the first time they in the crappy motel. that could be interesting turn.]]

Annah nodded. Once they pulled over she didn't bother getting out like Brandon did. She just slid across the center and into the drivers side. Once Brandon was in the car, she drove off into the sunrise.
She wasn't really tired. More drained than anything.

Brandon had long since passed out by the time she had driven into the next town.
Days passed before they decided to stop in city. Apparently they had been heading towards California. Now, Annah had never saw herself ending up there of all places. But it made sense, they weren't ever that far from it.

San Diego, California.
After a few weeks of sleeping in the car and living on little to no food Annah had found a job. And days later Brandon did too.
It didn't take her long to fit right in at her waitressing job. She worked in a local bar and they had found a small apartment. Shabby, run down, and not in the best neighboorhood, but it was better than a car.

Annah had made a few girlfriends and had got back into the swing of being social. Everything was... at least alright.

And after a long night at work and dealing with hungover losers over the age of forty that had lost everything Annah was walking home. Her small black heels clicked up the stairs of the apartment complex to room 204. She slid the key in and stepped inside, relishing in the feeling of being at a place she could call hers, and call home.

"Babe?" She whispered, not sure if Brandon would be asleep at ten on Saturday.

[ooh girl! i like the way you think! all sounds well. and i just picked California cause.. yeah. it was easiest(: hope its chill<3]

Brandon had surprised himself. He had fallen asleep as soon as his he closed his eyes. And the rest became a blur.

Next thing he knew it was 5 weeks, two days and 7 hours later.

He and Annah had ended up in San Diego, California. Of all places. At least it wasn't L.A. But, funnily enough, people here were still getting rich, or dying trying. They were still beautiful, they were still brutal, and it had taken Brandon a long while to stop feeling like an outsider. Now he was familiar with it all, he had managed to become part of the background.

He and Annah had found themselves a small apartment, and only when they signed the papers for the place did he realize that they were an actual, proper couple. An official, dysfunctional, connected, involved, couple. He had a paranoid ******** at first, hoping he wasn't doing anything, wrong or right, but now, being with her just came naturally. Kind of like how he felt when he first saw her. Or even, first got close to her in that damned counseling room.

Annah was quick to get herself a steady waitressing job and he managed to get work at a garage. It was the people he met there that actually 'sorted' the whole issue about their car not being his. No questions ask, no answers given. It was just sorted. Gotta love California.

Brandon heard Annah leave for her shift the evening before, and he had heard every sound in their apartment, and the click of her heels as the morning came.

Brandon was stood out on the fire escape by the kitchen in his grease stained jeans and white shirt with seams ripped and all, and the smell of coffee radiating from the coffee pot and his mug. He turned his head at the sound of her voice and took another sip.

"Out here An." he replied, before looking back out at the soon-to-be busy streets.

Annah heard his voice and her face lit up with life once again. She slid out of her heels, shut the door, and made her way towards the fire escape where she found her dirty looking guy drinking coffee.

She was exhausted and smelt like a bar. He was just getting up to go to work. This was how it always went. Everyday, with the exception of the occasional Wednsday. But even that wasn't an everyday thing.

She'd come home and hope to God she'd have at least a few minutes with Brandon before he walked out the door and she crashed in their bed. Then he'd come home around eight some nights just in time to see her as she left. And sometimes not even.

It all depended. They had almost zero alone time because they both worked different shifts. But nobody was around the bars, usually, during the day. And no one wanted their car fixed in the middle of the night. Their lives just weren't in sync.

"I'm glad I made it home in time to see you." She pecked him on the cheek before taking a drink out of his mug. She made a face at it. Black. "Ick," She had grown a thing for sugar and sweets again.
"When was the last time I saw you?" It was Sunday last night, so Monday morning. "Like Thursday?" She pouted.

Brandon smirked a little when she walked over and gave him a peck on the cheek. How did she manage a night shift in a diner and still look as gorgeous as she did when she left?

Brandon tried not to think about her work really. Being a waitress. And not to mention how she looked, and working nights.. no doubt she attracted enough attention to get the occasional drunkard profess their love or other 'longings' to her. He knew she wouldn't bat an eyelid, and loved her for it, but the idea would still grated at him if he thought about it for too long. Which he didn't, or rather, made sure he didn't.

He watched as she made a face at his coffee, his coffee skills must be getting worse. He smiled and finished off the rest of the drink and slide the mug back on the kitchen counter.

Brandon thought back to when he last saw her. It was most likely the last time they had sex. So.. yeah, thursday. Their timetables kind of sucked. What with him working all day, and her all night and sleeping during their time off, if they saw each other it was by chance and they typically made the most of any time that they did get together, which resulting in them doing it on almost every surface in the apartment.

"Yeah. I think so." he replied, stepping back out out onto the fire escape.

He wrapped his arms around her from behind and gave her a small kiss on the ear. She smelt of the diner, a mixture of cooked food and drink, and he smelt of fresh soap and whatever the heck shampoo she always got him.

"How was work?" he asked, his fingers interlocked around her waist and over her stomach, placing another kiss on her shoulder.

Annah laughed lightly as he finished off the coffee. If you could even call it that. "I really don't understand how you drink it like that." She smacked her lips a few times, trying to rid her mouth of the taste.

She couldn't help but watch him, his every move and motion. They didn't see each other for days at a time and whenever they had a few moments to themselves they were mindlessly screwing all over the place.

Bathroom. Kitchen. Living room. Uhm, if you could call an old sofa and a black and white T.V. a living room..
The fire escape was the only place they seemed to have not had sex on yet.

Hm.
Annah jumped slightly when he slid his arms around her. "Yeah, either way. Too long." She leaned back, resting her head on his chest. This was the happiest she had ever been. Not many people would say that while living on minimum wage in a rundown apartment. But Annah could honestly say there was little wrong with this life.

She had friends. Her own place. Her job. And most importantly, Her man. Her hands covered over his, which were wrapped around her stomach. Which had been getting noticibly larger. But she dismissed it because of the foods she'd been eating. And not taking her medication like she had for years now. That stuff made her drop pounds. It would only make sense that taking herself off of it would result in weight gain.

"Work was... work. Nasty old drunk guys and greasy food with five pitchers of beer every hour or so." She shrugged a bit. "When does your shift start today?" She closed her eyes, breathing in the city air.

Brandon smiled and kissed the side of her head as she leant back against him. "Sounds like fun." he commented sarcastically.

Then again. She worked with friends, he'd never met them, but she spoke about them sometimes, and they sounded nice, so it couldn't be all bad.

Unlike his leading lady, he wasn't as socially apt as she, so making 'friends' wasn't coming easy. Especially working with a bunch of crude grease monkeys too.

All day long it was tedious conversations about football games, blonde pin-up babes, and their latest one night bang on the weekend. He had just gotten used to going in, and getting down to work, avoiding any real involvement in any conversation and just focusing on getting through the day. And getting home to Annah. Or at least trying to get home to see her before she left.

He really loved her y'know.

If seeing each other every so often was all they could have at the moment, he'd take it. It was good to see her happier than that dark shadow of a person he'd met back at Aspens. Heck she was even putting on a little weight, not in a bad weigh, but healthily so. In fact, she seemed to be in glowing health recently.

"Mm. I miss you." he said, his smile fading a little as the realization of his words hit. And not to mention, being reminded of work. He had to go. He gave her another kiss on the shoulder. "I miss the way you smell." he added quietly. Her pillow always smelt of her, but he missed lying next to her.

He sighed quietly and loosened his hold on her slightly.

"Now." he said defeated. Brandon unwillingly let go of her and walked back into the kitchen, picking up his keys, phone and wallet, putting them into his pockets.
"I'll see you later babe." he said, quickly feeling their routine going back into order and walking back towards the fire escape to plant a quick kiss.

Annah nodded. "Ooooh yeah. Sooo much fun." Actually, the night before hadn't been too bad. She had gotten a lot of good tips and they wouldn't be late on any of their payments this month.

She sighed softly at his kisses and the way he held her. It was so nice to finally have him. Like really have him. They were alone, at least for the timebeing. There were no cameras, no escape routes, no ugly nurses with medicine, no evil wicked witch (or whatever her name was), and most of all no restrictions.

Freedom.
Thats what they had achieved.

"I'm right here," Annah whispered back. "You don't have to miss me yet." She reached her arms back, stretching, and cupping the sides of his face.
The way she smelt? "You mean of grease and beer?" She giggled softly.

But when Brandon's arms loosened her face fell. "Oh," She released his face and turned around as he walked away from her. Her arms folded across her stomach, a small pout formed on her lips. "Yeah, later." She kissed him back, but it was short-lived.

As always.

Brandon nodded and gave her a small smile, and with that, unwillingly left her, again.

Walking down the steps from their apartment and out the main doors, the cold chills of the morning hit him hard. As he crossed the street he turned and looked back up at the apartment for a second, but then carried on down his way to the motor garage.

Suppose it was lucky everything they needed was pretty much walking distance in this town. It was big enough to get lost in, but small enough to be comfortable. So why wasn't he yet?

Whatever, he'd have to leave those thoughts for another time as he just arrived at the garage. Not a minute late.

"Sup Lane." came a low greeting from behind the hood of a car.

"Hey Bobby." Brandon replied with a thumbs up before going over to his workstation for another looong day.

"Hot damn check out those fine pieces of a**.." Came another gruff voice from underneath a car. The other guys joined in with the whistling and hooting, and as usual Brandon kept quiet and began working on the busted engine of the s**t piece automobile from '98.

"Hey... Brandon, you gay?" One guy, Len, asked. Receiving an unimpressed slap to the arm from Bobby. "What??"

Brandon looked up from the engine and smirked. "No I'm not."

"See, told you." Bobby said to Len. Len didn't seem too phased. "What? No harm in asking." Bobby shook his head and walked back to his station.

"So," Brandon's tanned balding co-worker started, leaning on the side of his car. "You got a girl then?"

Brandon didn't look up. "Yep."

His reply received a firm slap on the back. "Good fella! Where you been hiding her bud!? I see more of my wife walk past here than I do at home!"

Brandon shrugged a little and replaced a cap on the engine as Len walked back to his station chuckling a little. He didn't doubt what he said. Len and Bobby's wives were always dropping by. Joining in with banter about their manly men and whispering subtly about who the 'quiet' guy is.

How'd they manage to get it so easy? Didn't seem fair.
