"I am Chalthara, Matron Hun'Afin. Jys'lyl came to an unfortunate demise some time ago, and I have taken her place." Chalthara's voice was calm, despite her trepidation.

Her mind jeered at her that even her voice could give her away. She tried her hardest to make that self-criticism disappear, but to no avail. She was being laughed at ceaselessly.

Should I request that you accompany me as my advisor? she signed to Veldrin, who was luckily standing behind her. Hopefully she did not alert the driftdisk to this covert action.

An advisor might imply weakness, Veldrin signed in reply, hoping that the driftdisk would be unable to sense the silent conversation. I doubt that she would have any objection to a bodyguard accompanying you, though.

Right, Chalthara signed in return. A bodyguard would be more believeable. She almost regretted having asked -- that seemed like weakness in itself, didn't it? Her face reddened a little, though it was probably only possible to see that through infrared vision, the heat rising to her face with embarrassment.

The floating disk did not have the capability to read. The conversation between the matron and the male was not exposed.

After a few moments the driftdisk answered. "The Matron of Hun'Afin has been requested." It meant that it did not matter who was matron, as long as the matron and matron alone took her appointed seat.

"Does the Matron of Hun'Afin decline Matron Ulvira's invitation?"

"Matron Hun'Afin gladly accepts the invitation of the First House," Chalthara said. "I apologize for not having made that clear from the beginning." She wouldn't dream of declining an invitation from Matron Ulvira, no matter what kinds of things her nervousness was telling her. "Have I permission to bring a guard from my house? I do not make a point of travelling the streets of this city unattended, especially with a newly acquired status such as I have."

"Very well." The magical voice intoned. "Matron Ulvira has personally seen to your protection. A guard of your house will not be necessary."

The blue glow around the disk suddenly grew brighter, ready to take the matron to her destination.

Chalthara did not wish to go against the Matron's wishes...nor her own. Although she had agreed to Veldrin's proposition, she could not just have refused that offer. In everything except true rulership, she would be Matron, and that was what she had worked all her life to be in her own House, now fallen and forgotten.

"Very well." Chalthara looked back towards Veldrin and wondered if he would protest. Probably not, if he was just playing the bodyguard for now. "Veldrin, make sure nothing goes awry while I am gone," she snapped, a promise of punishment in her voice. Despite her recent troubles, she had grown up first daughter of a noble family.

((Hope that's cool with you, Vel.))

"Of course, Matron Chalthara," Veldrin replied as he kept up his facade of being a simple guard, while his fingers flashed out his true response, "Don't screw this up. I expect a full report when you get back."

"Use this to contact me should you require anything," he whispered softly as he subtly slipped a small flat stone into Chalthara's hand while he helped her up onto the driftdisk. "Just picture me in your mind's eye while you grip the stone, then think your message...just keep it short. Don't worry, nobody will hear my reply but you."

((No worries, it's all good...just don't get too carried away))

((Sure thing, Mr. Boss Man Godfather Person! OwO))

Chalthara nodded in response to both the signs and whisper at once. She knew better than to overstep the boundaries that Veldrin had set. If she did that, she would end up dead at Veldrin's hand with a new, more obedient figurehead in her place. She wasn't quite in the mood for dying.

Would they be able to find out what I'm saying through scrying of some sort, she wondered as she took the stone from Veldrin and tucked it into her piwafwi.
"Farewell," she managed to say, cordially enough.

The disk then departed from Qu'ellar Hun'Afin.

((Finally!))

Veldrin nodded his acknowledgment as the driftdisk departed before turning back and returning to the main compound to attend to other business.

Shririak looked up from the letter she had in her hand to the gates ahead of her. It held information from her informant containing the names of the Matron's of each house, currently political standing, and which might aid in her ambitions.
This seems to be the house. Her gaze shifting along the grand gates. Quite impressive entrance. She shift out of the shadow and approached the gates. A pleasant smile on her face.
"Hello there, I wonder if I could get a meeting with those inside this House. I pose no threat." She said holding up her hands in peace. "And my bags are filled with nothing but papers, jewels, and trinkets."

[NPC Gate Guard]The guard on duty descended from the watchtower to greet the new arrival. "Greetings. For what purpose do you request an audience with the nobles of the House?"

((We'll have to pick this up tomorrow. I need to call it a night and grab some shuteye.))

(Its cool, I have to get off soon too.)
Shririak stubbornly held the smile on her face. Darn it, they could just be foolish and allow anyone in could they, she thought. As she pushed her hair out of her face. "I'm here seeking employment. I've heard a lot of this house and hope that I can aid it with my skills."

[NPC Gate Guard]"Very well, Lord Veldrin shall be informed about your arrival immediately." A slot in the massive adamantite gate opened as the soldier continued, "I must ask you to surrender any weapons and submit to an inspection of your gear before I can allow you to enter."
