Technically, they're Raccoon DOGS; Tanukis (they're called that in Nihon-go) are always known for their oversized testicles as they use them to bang like bongo drums and often ask for a bottle of sake. They can also shapeshift too, but not as pretty-looking as kitsune (foxes) can do.

In the Hayao Miyazaki film Pom Poko, they're actually cuddly-looking. Its the Tanuki Statues of them that's creepier... xd xd
