Its a system of belief, but that doesn't necessarily make it a "religion".

Atheists don't believe there is no god. We don't believe there is a god.
There's a big difference. If you say those are the same, that's saying believing and not believeing are the same thing. Like breathing and not breathing are the same thing. It's not a belief it's a lack of belief.
If I have a religion for not believing in the christian god, then every Christian/Islamist/Jew/Hindu/Pagan/theist in general also has billions of religions. One for every god they don't believe in.
Atheism is not a religion.

But however, you have to imagine other deities as cardboard characters. That way, you can still say it without thinking it is real. XD

Oldish thread, but atheism is not a religion. If that were the case than everyone has many many religions, one for each denial of every god ever created.

WickedRentSpringAwakening Oldish thread, but atheism is not a religion. If that were the case than everyone has many many religions, one for each denial of every god ever created. Religion is considered anything that brings faith into an aspect of life, believing in a higher power (Deity/Deities), or any practice that brings meaning to someone's experience of life. Atheism, with what religion is describing, is not a religion.

Being serious, however, what makes Atheism act like a religion what-so-ever? Seems to me lots of people in this country refer to a rather constrained definition of religion. Listen to interviews of militant atheists and then tell me that they don't sound almost exactly the same as religious fundamentalists, only with a different agenda. xd I could go on, but I won't. Personally I consider atheism to in some contexts, to be a religion (particularly when the person is religiously atheistic, which frankly we see a lot more nowadays with the vocal atheist crowd), but in other contexts, not to be. It just depends. But then, I also really dislike the term atheist because it is so incredibly meaningless. xp

Atheism, with what religion is describing, is not a religion. That's pretty rough... I don't think that's exactly the way to put it. There are many things you do that bring meaning to someone's experience of life that aren't religion. Atheism =/= nihilism. Also I'm not sure if being a fundamentalist about Atheism makes it a religion... You can act this way about your opinion on politics, society and soccer. Being crazy isn't only a religious thing.

VK Fox I do not think that it is a religion, but it does behave like one. It might look that way because it kind of seems like atheists all belong to this counterculture that "worships" the HSM and makes Atheist Challenge videos, but it's just a subculture formed around atheism. The only thing all atheists have in common is a lack of belief in a god and that's it. How, why, and how they choose to express it are all up to the individual. Basically what I'm saying, there are a lot of atheists that don't belong to the atheist subculture.
