"Oh, I beg your pardon." He said hurridly, his cheeks reddening. That must be why she had looked sad earlier. There he went, upsetting her again. He reached out, putting a hand supportivly on her arm. Mattie could wait just another moment... Do like before, move on, don't linger on the subject. "Then, how did your grandmother react to all the males trying to court you?" He asked with an encouraging smile. Maybe, one day, they would share their pasts with each other, but not now.

Mattie leaned closer, craning her ears and neck to see what was going on. Why did she look so sad? Did Papa do something stupid? Chewing on her bottom lip, she watched intently. Well...he was blushing, so something must've embarrassed him. Or Aimee.
"Grandmother..." Aimee said quietly, "She...she kept me at home. I really didn't go out much when I was younger...until I was an adult..." she played with the strands of her hair, avoiding his gaze. "I never really met boys when I was a teenager..." she laughed weakly. She must sound like some sort of hermit or something to Aubrey.

Aubrey shook his head. "I find that hard to believe." He said lightly. "You're sounding like me, stuck at home but for different reasons." He gave her arm a final squeeze before letting it go. Move on, way from the awkward. Idiot. "Well, I suppose I should go before Mattie starts getting impatient. I'll be- I mean- We'll be back to see you- er- the desserts, too... later."

"No, no. Really." she said softly, "My grandmother always worried about me, so she always kept me home when I was young." Aimee nodded slowly, "I'll have them ready for you by the time you get back."
Hm. Was it something intimate? She supposed so because Papa's hand was on Aimee's arm. Didn't that usually mean two taurs liked each other? Twiddling her thumbs, sitting quietly, Mattie tried to pass off as nonchalant totally not trying to eavesdrop on her father's conversation.

Aubrey smiled. "Well, at least you can get out now, when you like." He glanced back at Mattie, her thumbs twiddling. She was probably bored by now. 'We better go before she tries sneaking into the kitchen to get those desserts herself.' He said to himself with a chuckle.

A small smile formed on Aimee's face, "Well...she still worries over me...maybe a little too much..." she nudged him slowly towards his daughter, "She's probably getting impatient..."
Out of the corner of her eye, she watched them, sitting primly. She was starting to feel impatient, wanting to eat those sweets Aimee had mentioned. Even though Mattie finished a big plate of lunch, she always had room in her stomach for an extra dessert or two. 'I wonder what's taking him so long...' she thought.

Smiling back, he thought of his words before speaking, not wanting to sound like a stuttering ninny again. "So, we'll be seeing you later for that dessert." Turning, he grinned broadly at Matilda and clapped his hands together, rubbing them eagerly. "Well, you ready to get on with the day?"

Aimee nodded, pushing her hair back, "I'll keep it'll be waiting for you..."
All thoughts of Aimee and Aubrey aside, Mattie's ears perked up as she jumped up, "Of course I'm ready!" she said excitedly. "Where should we go first?"

Aubrey spared one more wave and smile for Aimee before holding the door to let Mattie out. "Lets see, there are many choices. We can go through the different stalls and look to see if there're any entertainers out today. I think it's supposed to be a, what is it, doll show? No. Puppet show, whatever those are. We could walk to the market outside of town. Maybe we could even go into the bigger shops and gaze longingly at everything I can't afford." He chuckled. "Today is going to be about what you want to do. Within reason, of course."

Mattie waved at Aimee, a big smile on her face. Mattie waved her hand, "I'm too old for puppet shows Papa." she trottted out, shielding her eyes from the bright sun, "Let's just look at the desserts and fruits. Oh! Do you have anything you need to buy? Mama usually does that when she goes to town." She laughed, slapping her dad lightly on the arm, "We can do that! There were these pretty pearl earrings the other day..." she drifted off, "It would go really nicely with Aimee's pearls...." she glanced at her father, looking for his reaction. She had to get to work again.

"What do you want to look at food for? We just ate, and Aimee is saving dessert for us later. You little bottomless pit you." He spoke affectionately. Aubrey cocked his head. Too old? "Really? I've never seen a puppet show, only heard of them. I'll take your word for it though." Pearls? Aimee. He chuckled warmly. "They'd probably be nice with that pin she recently bought, too. All together, a pretty set-" Suddenly he blinked and he gave Mattie a c**k-eyed look, giving her nearer ear a playful tug. "What do you want earrings for anyway?" His voice betrayed a bit of concern. Wasn't she still young for such bangles?

"No, no!" she giggled, shaking her head, "Not me! Mama would be extremely unhappy if I pierced my ears!" Mattie continued giggle as he tugged her ear, "I was thinking," she started, "Thinking...you know...you could give Aimee a present...cause...you know..." she nudged her father with a little wink. "...You like her..." she whispered in a slightly accusatory tone.

Aubrey nearly sighed in relief, but held it in. At least Palladia was good for something. Would he have been able to say no to Mattie if she had insisted on earrings for herself? Once again, that beety blush crept up his face. He figured this happened more times today than it had the past year. "Wait a minute. I can't just go buy something for her. She's a coworker. A friend. I'd have to get something for the others working there, and it'd have to be just as special- er- nice as the earrings, otherwise the others might get jealous, and I don't have the money to buy all that, and I don't want her to feel obligated to get me anything in return and something as speci- nice as pearls might make her think that. Besides, she hasn't shown any sign of liking me bac- in that way." He rambled without realizing it. He liked Aimee, but did he really like her?

It was final. Her father did like Aimee, and she would have to do everything in her power to set them both up together. "It's not that hard you know." she said, ear flicking idly, "When its her birthday, you get her something. Or you could just be like, 'I saw this and thought of you, so I had to buy it for you.'" Mattie trotted along, "That's what Riome does for Mama."

Aubrey mentally smacked himself in the face. Way to be subtle. So, a Palladia feature was finally showing through his sweet daughter. Manipulation. Though, Matilda was just trying to help, he thought. Actually, even as he spoke, he was unconciously thinking of ways to give the wavy-haired beauty a present. Could he do it without wimping out first? "And how would you know how hard it is to go up to someone attractive and offer a gift?" He asked suspiciously. "Wait- you mother is accepting gifts from this guy?" It sounded like the poor b*****d was getting sucked into her web of evil like Aubrey himself had so long ago.
