(I'm not a big fan, but I hold no grudges or burning hatred toward it) Rap is by defintion a form of music. I once had a student teacher band director who believed everything was music, the awkward silence of a conversation, the sounds of everyday life, etc. People constantly label rap and say it can't be music because it has no instruments in it, but then, what is sound itself? What is techno? What are synthesizers? I have heard some rap that has instruments in the background with the sounds, and every rap song has some form of percussion to keep a beat, whether it be electronic or real. As far as lyrical content, that's based on the tastes of the artists and listeners, and shouldn't really be the main focus of the whole argument about rap, because lyrics are only a healthy half of what makes a song. And if this is truly a guild for music artists, then there should be no problem in allowing rappers to join. Music is a form of freedom, of escape, of expression. Whomever forgot that and had to actually create a thread that questions and judges a musical genre based on a taste bias, needs to take a long hard day to sit down or boogie, crank up the headphones, and get lost in their music until there is nothing but life and sound flowing as one through their minds.
~Peace!

personally i dont really care for rap. i only like 3 rap songs and thats because they used more than eltronical beats and talking. they actually sing and have other instruments. I think everyone is entitled to like whatever music they want like generally people who like rap think that rock,metal,alt.,etc.... is just screaming and banging on a guitar.....but you know the characteristics that define the genre of rap should not be considered music but you have to give some of them credit for the good lyrics but as i stated above everyone is entitled to their oppinion.

when rock started off everybody said that it was "nothing but noise", people couldn't stand the sound of distorted guitars and loud/energetic vocals. the rebellious youth of sex, drugs and rock&roll was replaced by hip hop almost 30 years ago. the rock scene has evolved and been accepted by much of society. most people here can look into their parents old CD's and find some old 70's bands. that first rock generation grew up and had kids and now those kids are (unfortunately) brainwashed into thinking they have to choose to listen to eithre rock or rap.

Rap is a kind of music, and there are a few rappers that I love there songs.
But, most other rap is wrong, insuting, and brings shame. I am an outcast of my school, because I refuse to like demeaning rap music, I like rap with positive messages, and good lyrics.
Today, too much rappers spend time trying to be as 'gheto' as possible. While I respect some rappers for there messages, other I abhor because of there messages. B/c of rap, and the videos that accopany them, women are brainwashed into acting/dressing/being as harlots, men desire look like drug dealers and thugs, and rap encourages horrible grammer.
Thus, I think that rap has two sides, a musical side, and a demonic side. If only there were more ppl to oppose the demonic, gang-idoliser side then most rap would be okay. Just my opinion though whee

i highly doubt that you are an "outcast" but i'm not gonna argue about your personal life, lets stay on subject..
you're steriotyping rap just as much as everyone else here. you say you only like a few rappers but thats because you only bothered to look up a few good ones. am i wrong? you cant judge a book by its cover and you can't say that a certain style of MUSIC is wrong. most of the girls in the videos dont dress like sluts, they are sluts. or should i say groupies? even though that steriotypical music video you describe is overused... rock does the same thing with in many ways.. i've explained that i tihnk so go research if you're gonna argue with that statement.
steriotypes, all steriotypes... it's pathetic that this is one of the biggest threads of the guild. it says alot about the overwhelming demographics.
"rappers not welcome"
who's the outcast there?

Almost everyone that know of music hates rap and that kind of music, like reggaeton (I sooo hate it!), but at the end of the day, it is music and should be respected, just like rockers (some) respect pop as well.

Well, I like a couple of rap tracks (nothing new). But is it music? By all means, no. Should we allow people to join because they Rap? No.
Rap...is, well, Rap. It's not anything else. It's not musical, it's not great...it's just Rap.

Out of all due respect. im a rapper. but people say "they just talk about cars and money" and all this bullshit. but thats because there the only rappers u heard off. like 50 cent. thats not rap. thats talking with music playing. I only like rappers with "MEANING". that talk about stuff that people care about.
BUT!
if u ask me. thats no way to judge rappers as music writers. if guns and money isnt summit to write a song about... then why is cutting ure wrists and commiting suicide something to write about?
its not the type of music that show ure skill as a song writer. its the meaning of the lyrics and how deep they go. thats the essence of a true song writer.
so imo. i think ANYONE who writes music shud beable to join here.

P.S! RAP IS NOT AN EASY TASK TO ACOMPLISH!
if any of you people who dont like rap can do any of these.
1.ADAPT TO ANY BEAT 2.USE A DECENT FLOW 3.RAP WITHOUT WRITTEN LYRICS 4.AND GET YOUR POINT ACROSS!
this is just the beginning of being a "GOOD" rapper.
the main skills in a rapper consist of PUNCHLINES, MULTIES and METAPHORES! but theres alot more.
Big L line from "Put It On"
And it's a fact I keep a gat in my "arm reach" I "charm freaks" and "bomb geeks" from here to "Palm Beach"
--> "MULTIE". when any non rapper have got this amount of skill. ill let them judge if rap requires talent.
