It's not a personal comment, I don't think, it's just some people have aversions for certain things (like clowns), or things that scare them to no end (like cars, or fire.) Just an association.

WickedPomegranate magikjaz Pomegranates are Ebil. Sorry Is this a joke? If so, I guess I missed something, sorry if anyone thinks I am evil, I sure do not understand that comment. I was just hoping to joke and have some fun sorry, guess I will keep my mouth shut. nothing against you personally...pomegranates scare me. Yes I know it's totally silly to be scared of a food but I've had the phobia almost my whole life. Personally i wish i had been smart enough to think of being the wicked one of them cuz nobody who knows me would have ever guessed it was me. As to why they are ebil, pomegranates are often believed to be the fruit of knowledge of which adam and eve ate and lost paradise (not the apple as commonly depicted) The biggest reason I am afraid (seriously...more afraid of them than clowns) of them is the Greek myth of Persephone. She was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld. After much pleading from Demeter, during which time she caused the earth to be barren while she searched for her daughter, Zeus finally convinced Hades to let Persephone go, but only if she hadn't eaten any food in the underworld. However, Hades tricked Persephone and she ate 6 pom seeds. Finally an agreement was made where Persephone would be allowed to leasve the underworld to rejoin her mother, but must return one month for each seed she ate, which is when we have autumn and winter, and when she is rejoined with her mom, spring and summer. I read this at a very young age. I've never eaten a pom seed or had pom juice. I made Kevin promise he would never trick me into eating them. Once we went to an xmas party with his family and they had a fruit salad with these little red things (i had never even seen them before) and Kevin's brother asked what they were....Kevin looked at me before saying "pomegranate seeds" I jumped 3 seats away like i had been shocked. I couldn't even look at the salad. I can't even smell polmegranate scented candles...i'm too afraid to even pick them up. Once time someone jokingly gave me a pom on Neo and it sat in my inventory for weeks cuz i was too afraid to "touch" it. And heaven forbid i see one at the grocery store...i walk around the other way so I'm nowhere near them. I've even had a hard time typing the word this whole time. My sister-in-law says they are wonderful and sweet and they of course are supposed to be good for you...none of this matters to me. I'm deathly afraid of them. The only thing I'm more afraid of is flying. So that, my dear purkle friends, is why pomegranates are ebil. I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt your feelings. heart heart

Jaz, maybe this will help with your fear--I practice Greek religion, and we talk about this myth a lot. The actual Greek translates into something akin to "arranged marriage"--Zeus (Persephone's father) gave her to Hades (his brother) as his wife. This is something that was done all the time back then. Demeter, being a goddess, was pissed that Zeus did this without consulting her, which is why she went on the rampage she did.
There is a lot of speculation that Persephone ate the seeds willingly because she did love Hades--he's not a bad guy, just misunderstood. Many believe that this was the revelation of the Elusinian Mysteries, one of the biggest mystery cults in all of Greece.

I can vouch for the fact that they are one of the only fruit trees who will 'volunteer' (grow from a seed/fruit dropped on the ground) and flourish here in the desert. Nice to have a splash of colour and shade in an otherwise barren landscape. When the fruits are cut the right way, their sections also reveal a lovely 5 pointed star, especially meaningful to certain religions as well, or people who just like stars rofl In WickedPomegranate's journal, I saw a story about why they are special to him, in fact I think he referred to it as 'comfort food' Guess it is just a matter of how the mind interprets stuff. Personally, I want to hurl when I see/think of fried chicken because a Colonel in a white jacket's leftovers were in the refridgerator when I was 10 and thought I had recovered from the stomach flu. That particular finger lickin' night I found out I was NOT recovered and cannot eat or even look at fried chicken and I will go out of my way to avoid it.

this is interesting! Food can have very strong assossiations with something for a person and it will effect them their whole lives! the scent or savour of a dish can bring back long forgotten memories. i went on a trip to Manchester with a friend about 17 years ago, we spent a good day roaming the city, one of the places we visited was china town. We went down into a very quaint shop where i purchased a can of coconut flavoured drink, it was delicious! later that day we visited a funfair, now against my better judgement my friend pursuaded me to go on this particular ride with him, needless to say i was sick as a dog! After that i couldn't even smell coconut for years without feeling sick, the mind is an immensely powerful thing!

I have always loved to eat them! I can remember my mother soaking me to get the red off...
But now there is one growing in our neighbors back yard. But they never pick them off the tree. So each year they fall all over our back patio. Now mind you we don't have a back yard, just the patio. When it is covered in broken open poms, I suddenly don't like them...
As for the tale, even on the show Hercules, they portrayed it that she loved Hades.
