Ariaen was late. She knew she was late, and this added to her annoyance that she had gone to the Touching in the first place, and had to wake up early for a chance she might not even have. She dashed towards the sands, barely having time to put on her sandals. She gavea hasty bow to the queen, noticing a bronze and blue had already hatched, and that the blue had impressed.

She stood a ways away from the group of girls, nearer to the queen than the others. It would have been that, or try to put up with the other girls. She'd take standing closer to the queen dragon any day.

Notos had been awoken in a flurry, hearing the word hatching break into his dream. He no sooner had woken up, with little warning than that, murmuring. "Hatching..?" when the white robe had been tossed into his face in the black of night. He didn't know who tossed it, and that fact wasn't important right now. In fact, it wasn't important at all, since it was helping. His eyes strayed to the window, dark, displaying that it as a night hour. And such a late hour... but he didn't suppose that a hatching paid any consideration to time.

The promise to each other had Notos flinging on the robes, and racing outside of the doors. By the time he had gotten to the hatching ground, he was out of breath. He executed a quick bow to the queen, before proceeding to see the eggs. Over the heads of various people, he could determine a little of the current events. He could see now, that two eggs had hatched. One bronze, and one blue. They had already impressed by the looks of it, the corners of his mouth curving into a faint smile. Good for them.

"What of the other eggs..?" he questioned, asking no one in particular. His gaze strayed to the eggs remaining, seeing that he hadn't missed much. The eggs still remained unhatched, Notos seeing that he wouldn't miss out on the action after all.

With the sheer number of Candidates, it was unsurprising that a few people had been jostled around. Mal just happened to be one of them. He shrugged at Kas and gave a little grin to show that no harm was done. It was only an accident. Besides, getting into a fight here on the Sands wouldn’t do any good. Especially now that the Hatching was happening.

Ah, a Bronze! That was a good omen, or so people said. Mal wasn’t so certain about that, but everyone else seemed awful happy about the big fella. If Bronzes were all like Aeron, though, he wouldn’t exactly call it a ‘good’ omen. It was an omen of something certainly, but only ‘good’ if you… you… hey. Was that Marko over there? Mal blinked a few times and squinted in the direction of the familiar Harpers and half-heartedly waved over at them. Hadn’t counted on seeing them again. It even took him a while to recognize Xeran, although he was rather recognizable. Well, it looked like Marko had finally won Xeran over. Took him long enough. Although, Marko seemed to be flailing a lot for a guy who was finally in Xeran’s arms. And shouting a lot too.

Mal managed to catch a few words, most of them being the word ‘fardles’, ‘going to get yourself killed’, and, possibly, ‘Let go’. The Candidate scratched his head for a moment before deciding it wasn’t important. Marko being weird wasn’t news. It was Marko being Marko.

Besides, there was a little Blue hatching now! Cue awws from the audience as it stumbled about. Awwwwwwr… some lucky boy that Mal didn’t know Impressed the lovely little Blue and Mal went back to watching the eggs, trying not to think too much about the Harpers. It had been a while, after all. Maybe he ought to just… uhh… avoid them.

Right. Good idea.

Westren was excited to see that the first Hatchling was a Bronze. From what he heard, having a Bronze hatch first indicated a good clutch; a myth, probably, but still nice to believe. However, it was the hatching of the Coral egg that really drew his eye. Holding his breath, he grinned when the little Blue came out.

‘ Pretty little Blue.’

He then winced as the dragonet proceeded to trip over his own tail. The dragonet’s Impression was bittersweet, because although he was glad that the Blue had not gone between, he had hoped to be chosen by it.

‘ And that’s why you don’t get your hopes up.’

It was not the little blue's Impression that finally jolted Merya into something resembling wakefulness, but little green Beru rousing from her spot on the pillow back in the barracks and giving a questioning little thought - a "where are you?" that had no words. A brief moment of panic - no, Beru, stay! - was the little Holder's first conscious thought of the evening, and she followed it up by sending some images of angry S'kagi to back up her command. She could almost hear Beru's little "squeeeee..." of disappointment as the flit sank back on to the pillow. Slowly she began to register the hot sand under her bare feet, the irritatingly well-fitting robes that had last been owned by a fourteen-year-old girl, the shouts of the spectators and the soft hisses of the new hatchlings. Only then did she blink a few times, open her eyes again and take in the sight of the Hatching grounds come alive.

So much for an early sharding night.

Still half-dazed with the remains of an hour or so's fitful sleep, Merya steadied herself inwardly and cast her mind back over the past twenty minutes. She couldn't remember who'd woken her. Had it been one of the other Candidates? Had she simply been roused by all their fuss to get ready and automatically followed suit? Her conscious mind hadn't been involved in the process of dressing, tying back her hair, making sure Beru was sound asleep, dragging herself down here - had someone given her a lift? Had it been L'thor? Raith? That part was hazy; perhaps she'd dreamed it. Her dreams, of late, had been nothing but fire and dragons.

She was really starting to dislike mornings, or whatever passed for them. Given she'd once been one of those insufferable morning people who wakes up as fresh as a daisy no matter how little sleep they've had, this was testament to Candidacy taking its toll on her. She'd never worked so hard in her life. Latrine duty, which she'd spent the first sevenday doing thanks to that irritating little misunderstanding at the last Hatching, seemed like easy street now: unpleasant, but hardly backbreaking. Not like pulling up weeds for hours in the blistering heat. She'd burned. She'd burned so many times that her previously pale skin had taken on a sort of awkward tan, giving the impression that it had never tanned before and wasn't sure how a tan was supposed to look. She'd freckled, too. Shards, she probably looked even younger than usual. She felt about fifty Turns older.

To these young dragons, she might as well be.

Watching the two stumbling dragonets - one not meant for her, the other already choosing someone else - Merya smiled a little. Nothing in the Weyr, perhaps in the whole world, was younger than these new lives. They were taking their first steps into an existence that would be fraught with danger and burdened with hard work. Were they ready for that? Would they ever be?

Perhaps that was what riders were for.

Her smile vanishing in a split second, Merya turned her attention to the unhatched eggs. There was no good in watching two dragonets she couldn't have. Besides, she wanted to see what would emerge from the eggs she'd seen at the Touching - the precarious one, the twin of that little blue, the joker, the loner, and the Queen. If one of them was hers, and she its (his, hers, but all dragons seemed alike to her now), she wanted to be ready for it.

Silently, paying no attention to the Candidates milling around her, Merya watched the eggs and waited - not knowing, not truly expecting, but nevertheless hoping - to be chosen.

Weiwin smiled while a detached mien showed in her eyes as the glow-lit sands came into sight. The time had come, and she was comfortably numb – it was not as if she had waited for this moment all of her life. About the only feeling she could pick out of her swirling thoughts was curiosity, a sharp curiosity. Stories of Hatchings had filtered down to her -- her father had bragged on his experience in the stands for one, but, over the past several sevendays she could not conjure up what to expect. The Touching had brought her into contact with eggs and within striking distance of a mother dragon, yet that did not quite prepare her for this…

Sand cushioned each movement of her thick soled sandals and her white robe swished at her ankles. She looked all around her, not limiting her eyes to the eggs or any particular Candidate for that matter. Last time she was here she left in something of a stupor now; on the other hand, she was all eyes. Somehow she had managed to walk her way toward the front of the group of girls, though that didn’t really matter to her – especially not after the first egg cracked and produced a Bronze Hatchling.

The Blue one caught her attention from the corner of her vision, and she watched the impression with a crooked little smile. She might as well have been up in the stands instead of on the sands

She'd be delighted to see Elae, smiling brightly back at her. The wan smile had her concerned, the knit in her brow speaking of her concern while her mouth could not. Trying a temperature here would be pointless, everyone and everything was hot.

Before much more, Elae left her to go and hang out with Nan. She didn't follow her friend, per se, but she did move over a bit so she was closer. Eyes glued on the eggs, her ears strained to catch the sounds around her while her eyes never moved.

Only the hatching bronze brought her eyes from the golden egg. A great sign, though she had to wonder if it was negated because the blue impressed first. Faranth only knew, but she was happy for the pair, a candidate she had never seen was a lucky one to Impress such a handsome blue.

Zhaylan had gathered his thoughts enough to see the bronze and the blue hatch. The bronze came out in a splendid display while the blue seemed to shy away. Amber eyes stared intently, watching. Focus. Keep mind open. When Ururo gave him a nod, he nodded back. Speaking was not a good idea.

The bronze almost seemed to saunter around, not ready to pick from the boys, but not interested in anyone from the stands either. Zhaylan's eyes drifted back to the blue just as it moved up to his room mate. There. It was obvious on both their faces. Impression. Guess that meant no more room mate. He would have do honor the two and give them a picture later. Mentally, Zhaylan stored the picture in his mind for later.

At last, Jessan spotted Notos and Jiriar. Moving slowly and carefully, he went to stand near his friends for support. When the bronze and then the blue came out, he tried to meet their eyes and smile encouragement. He was pretty sure that due to his...nature...that he would not be able to Impress a bronze. But the blue!

The creature seemed so shy. Almost like the green from the last hatching but maybe not as timid. He wanted to hold out his hands and let the blue know that he was watching and waiting. And, apparently, so was another boy. Someone Jessan was not familiar with-not surprising considering how many candidates there were-looked on as the blue moved forward.

There!

Impression.

Sighing, Jessan turned his eyes back to his friends and the bronze. It was an emotional time for everyone. Especially so late into the night. Perhaps one day, Ista would have a Hatching at a decent time. In the meanwhile, he wondered who the bronze would go towards. Don't give up hope, he told himself mentally.

Kallista followed in T'ka's wake. Ducking and weaving, she was glad her larger friend was leading. With both of their dragons somewhere with the others, Kallista cursed as she sat down next to the other green rider. A bronze had already hatched. A good sign for sure but she had wanted to see it.

"I see your cousin, T'ka! I am with you, I don't really know anyone else around the Weyr. Astar demands all my attention. But just think, we might be flying with someone from this clutch someday." Kallista whispered excitedly. Suddenly, a blue. The creature weebled and fell over.

Awwww. Was I ever that small, Kallista? Astarteth asked. She was seeing the events the best she could through her rider's mind's eye. He seems so lost.

Not you love. You were as confident as you are now. I was so nervous I barely remember standing and suddenly, there you were. Kallista smiled to herself as she relived their Impression in her mind. Trying not to get emotional, she turned to T'ka. "Is Haanyath asking about the hatching?"

Pendra was relaxing, her tired feet soaking in the relatively cool waters of the Weyr lake, when the humming began. Alert to the sound as any Candidate she scrambled to her feet and promptly slipped to the ground hard. "Ouch..." She paused for a breath and then stood more carefully this time. The pain in her tailbone from the fall made her move far slower than she wanted as she watched other candidates in the limited light run into and out of the barracks. "I'm going to be late," Pendra whimpered fighting back tears.
She argued with herself as she pulled on her Candidate's garb. "Pull yourself together. You're worthy to stand for a dragon and its time to present yourself to this clutch." A emphatic nod and a quick adjustment to her robe to make sure it was on properly and she raced from the barracks to the Hatching Grounds putting the pain out of her mind.

----

Pendra was not surprised to see dragons on the sands already. She made her bow to the Queen. As she made her way to join the cluster of girls the dark blue impressed. She sent thoughts of happy congratulations to the new pair and smiled at the girls near her as she stood with them. Two hatched one impressed... "I wonder if mine is here this time..." she whispered to herself...

He had already been awake when the call came, curled up on his bunk stroking Gilden's soft hide. Barely a moment before the deep hum started, the golden flitt raised her head. At the Weyr began to shake, she took up the call. After a moment of staring at his flitt, Conomor leapt out of bed and pulled on his white candidate's robe. He met his father outside, and shared a grin with the man as he clambered up onto his sleek green. Moments later they were in the hatching grounds, and Conomor joined the scores of candidates jumping down onto the scorching sands.

The eggs entranced him already, and it seemed only a moment after his arrival that the first one cracked. A bronze! A good omen there. He watched the hatchling as it watched them, heart pounding as he waited for it to make its choice. Before the large hatching found its lifemate however, a blue hatched out and quickly located the one it would spend its life with. The first Impression was made, and Conomor found himself grinning. There was nothing like watching dragon and rider unite, especially close to. Would it be him today? Would he be one of those who found the other part of himself? He hoped so, hoped so desperately. It was wonderful to watch, but a touch of longing came along with seeing a bond formed too.

Kastina woke up, her eyes widening.
"Shells! Hatching! Argh!" she murmured under her breath. Fumbling with the rough material of the plain white robe, she pulled it on in a rush - rushing was never good for Kastina and she grimaced as she heard the ripping sound just as she got it on right.

Looking down she moaned; half the hem of the skirt had ripped exposing her leg to just above the knee on one side. The candidate-master wouldn't be happy. Or maybe she'd have to answer to the Weyrling master after today.. she was thinking 'Let me impress, let me impress..' over and over in her head as she ran out to the Weyrbowl in her flimsy sandals, until by the time she had reached the sands the words had lost all meaning. Kastina's hopes dashed and rose repeatedly as she looked around the other candidates on the scorching sands.

"Fardles, look at how many there are! But then again, not one is the same as me.. dragonets may like authenticity.. but who would pick me in all these candidates?" her mind argued with itself as she took her place. There were two spaces, the closer, the one she made for, was by the Boa Constrictor Egg, big compared to some of the smaller eggs. But and ache seemed to pull her to an egg over by the Coral - or was it the Milk Snake?- a small, bright yellow egg that tilted dramatically.

The Carpet Python Egg. It was small, slightly insignificant, but stood out, one of a kind almost.. Like me! she thought, standing back two meters, slightly behind the other candidates, but still close to the lovely mottled yellow egg. Like me??

Behind the young bronze, near the shards of its egg, he saw another small egg quiver and crack as the striped blue emerged. And just as quickly, he saw another boy hurry to the blue's side as Impression was made. A quick skim of the eggs, and his focus returned to the bronze. Had it Impressed yet? He had seen the dragonet settle on one Candidate briefly--a boy who, he noticed, had stepped a bit closer, but that seemed more of want than Impression.

Ceanandin moved forward a few steps himself, to stand on par with the boy ahead of him rather than behind. Maybe...this bronze was looking for him? Maybe it just hadn't seen him? He hadn't dared to hope for a bronze, but he had as much of a chance as any of them now, right? He didn't dare look away, but instead desperately attempted to drown his nerves in thoughts of happiness and warmth and welcoming. Let the dragonet notice him... Let just one of them notice him!

Sonya had been so caught up in the activies of day to day life at the hold, she almost missed the hatching, luckily though, not too much of it. She had gotten ready when everyone else did, but this time around, instead of running off with the main crowd, she had stayed to help a few of the late comers, and ended up being one herself. It hurt a little to know that she had already missed some of the hatching, especially when she hadn't attending the touching this time. There was no part of her that expected to impress this time around either, she just didn't see herself ready - not unless some dragonet took pity on her.

The young candidate make her way through the crowd, muttering every now and then 'excuse me', or 'sorry' as seemed approiate. Eventually Sonya could make out the unhatched eggs on the sands, and was that a dragon yet to impress? She smiled, glad she hadn't missed too much of the event.

<>

T'ka chuckled. That was Haanyath. <>

<> Haanyath replied haughtily, brimming with pride. T'ka couldn't help but admire Haanyath a bit. It was true. Haanyath was always on her A game, never asking for help. And while this made their bond trying sometimes, it only brought them closer in the end.

She chuckled and leaned over to talk to Naree without having to speak too loudly. She didn't want to offend the queen. There were some people a little ways away, a couple of men and a girl, yelling and putting up a fuss. Flailing and yelling. The ingrates, the nerve of some people. Favranth forbid the upset the queen. "Haanyath says that these hatchlings embarass themselves. That she was never so awkward," T'ka chuckled. "But I think deep down, she wishes them well...very deep down." T'ka leaned back, relaxing as she awaited for more of the eggs to hatch. She wasn't expecting, however, what came next.

<> Haanyath asked, sounding just a little concerned. Which was odd, because Haanyath concerned herself with little.

<> T'ka prodded, on edge. Something must be up.

<> T'ka looked over at Kyllae, examinging her as closely as she could from this distance. Her cousin looked fine. Whatever was Haanyath talking about. She just looked a little hot was all. The heat of the hatching sands would do that to you.

<>

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kyllae watched as the little blue was led off by his bonded. Such a cute pair, such an amazingly gorgeous blue. She loved the darkness of his hide. Funny that he had impressed before the bronze, who had hatched long before he did. Oh well, there was no telling with dragons. Maybe the little bronze was picky, or just had no reason to hurry. Who knew.
She wiped her forehead with her sleeve. It was warmer in here than she thought, she didn't like sweating this much. She coughed another time into her sleeve. She happened to catch a glance of her cousin in the stands, and smiled wider, though she didn't want to wave, that would make her look quite silly. She also saw Haanyath perched next to a couple of other greens, looking peeved that she had to sit next to them, but also interested in the hatching. What she wouldn't give to hear Haanyath's thoughts...it couldn't be anything less than hilarious, for sure. She thought that she saw Haanyath watching her a little as well, which was kind of odd. Why would Haanyath be taking that much interest in her, when there were hatchlings to watch. Whatever.
Kyllae turned her attention back to the eggs, while still keeping an eye on the little bronze.
