We're studying WW II in my American History class, and the teacher said that Hitler just saw the Swastika on a gravestone, thought it looked cool, and made it his party symbol.

because it represented something he did not beleive in. so he reversed it, and its meaning. like i previously stated

The swastika was also understood as "the symbol of the creating, acting life" (das Symbol des schaffenden, wirkenden Lebens) and as "race emblem of Germanism" (Rasseabzeichen des Germanentums).
I don't know if Germanism is even a word.
