M'zaji was pleased by Seryes' reaction, however emotional it was. It was the reaction that he had hoped for. She didn't seem disturbed or upset by Kaedrelath's words, just touched and appreciative. He smiled at her reassuringly. "I'll be sure to relay that to him, and I know he'll appreciate it," the bluerider said softly in response to Seryes' thanks.

When the woman brought up her Wher, M'zaji was more than happy to accept her offer. He probably made himself look a little silly, a boyish grin spreading across his face and his eyes lighting up as though it were his nameday and he had just received a whole ton of gifts. "You'd introduce me to her? Him? Really? I'd love that!" M'zaji marveled at the prospect of meeting a Wher. "I've never seen one. A wher, I mean. I'd love to meet Sersk," M'zaji said and nodded to emphasize his point. "And I'm sure your bond with Sersk is just as rewarding and indescribable as mine with Kaedrelath. Maybe Sersk is the reason you never Impressed," M'zaji mused aloud. He knew that a person could not have a dragon and a wher, both. Each bond, alone, was far too intense. A dragon would not share its rider with anything else so alike to itself, and the same with a Wher. So, while Seryes envied him for being a dragonrider, M'zaji wanted to make her realize that her bond with Sersk was every bit as precious and intimate.

That was a point. "Well, seen as we do have the whole day off might as well stick around right until the end then," Conomor said with a grin. "Might find all sorts of nice things besides a necklace that suddenly become affordable. A new belt would be nice, maybe a rug or something too. Couldn't have it in the dormitory at the minute of course but I could have my mother look after it for me until the hatching's over, one way or another."

If he Impressed, it would be nice to have something to begin furnishing his sleeping area with; he gathered things were a bit more lax once you were a weyrling rather than a candidate. If he failed... Well if he failed, it would be nice to make himself feel better by upgrading his little alcove in his mother's quarters.

Riordan grinned and nodded. "Yeah, might find some really good deals." A new belt did sound nice, though the boy was hoping more for some cloth. Or perhaps some already made clothing. He could really use some new boots, too. Shards, why had he started on this train of thought.

First mission: Find the necklace. Then they could browse around for good deals.

Conomor looked thoughtfully up at the sky as he pondered that and nodded. "A while to go yet, but I suppose if some merchants aren't doing as well as they expected there'll be good deals already." Some of the cries reaching out to them did have a slightly desperate ring to them. A big gather like this was much better for the buyer than the seller. That in itself was a danger though of course; so many irresistible good deals... But some really were too good to pass over, he considered as he shifted the pot under his arm slightly. He'd have to put this in the hearth as soon as he got back and make sure he remembered to turn the egg every so often.

"That one there looks promising," Conomor commented, indicating a stall displaying jewelry just ahead of them. Much as he might get a good deal later on, if he could buy something at a reasonable price right now he'd prefer it; that way he could start browsing for himself again, not that he really needed to find any more wonderful deals to make this a thoroughly good day.

Riordan glanced upwards as well and nodded. If they found a necklace fairly soon, they could even take a break and get in some shade for a bit before hunting down deals. And get some more of that fruit juice.

The boy glanced towards the stall Conomor had indicated. Ah, this did seem to have the type of stuff they were looking for. Time for a closer look!

As soon as he approached, his decision was made. A fine but tough looking coppery chain with a bright blue stone of some kind set into the same metal. The workmanship was excellent, and the contrast between the ruddy metal and the blue stone was perfect. He ignored the merchant's attempts to draw his attention to the more expensive end of his range, and shot the man a glare when he waved a silver pendant under his nose. Apparently his look was fierce enough to deter further interruption, for the trader drew back a little with an embarrassed cough before returning to his patter.

The necklace was pinned down to the board it was displayed on by its chain in several places, but Conomor was able to lift the pendant up and look at the reverse side. Plain and smooth save for tiny scratched initials; good.

"This one," he said decisively, meeting the trader's eyes again, "what's your price?"

The figure was inflated, of course, and Conomor gave a ridiculous offer in the opposite direction out of hand. Then he and the trader exchanged a grin and the bartering began in earnest. In the end, they met more or less dead in between their initial demands and the merchant quickly demonstrated the catch mechanism before placing the necklace in a small cloth bag and passing it over. After handing over marks in return, Conomor turned back to Riordan and grinned.

"What can I say," he shrugged, "there was only one like it."

Riordan couldn't help but chuckle at the trader's enthusiastic manner of trying to sell the expensive items. He watched the two barter over the price of the necklace and took the opportunity while the trader was distracted to look at the other pieces without having one shoved under his own nose.

Finally, they settled and the two boys were heading off with a new necklace. "It's very pretty. I'm sure your foster mother will love it. You want to keep looking around or take a break?"

Conomor tucked the necklace safely away inside his purse and stretched. "A break," he said with a nod, "I need something to eat and drink and somewhere to sit for a while before I'm up to any more shopping. It's exhausting work." He wasn't quite sure what it was about wandering around stalls that was so draining; his daily chores tended to be centered around heavy labor thanks to his bulk but this was a lot more tiring than hefting around buckets of water or whatever else.

Riordan chuckled. "Sounds good to me. I'm starving!" Then again, he was male. He was pretty much always starving. He liked to claim it was because he was a growing boy. That's what his mother had always said before he'd left for the Weyr.

Conomor gave a lopsided grin as his stomach growled its displeasure at being neglected thus far. One small meat roll was not enough fuel to shop on, and breakfast had been a long time ago now and didn't count anymore at all. "Shall we head over and see what the main food stalls have to offer then?" he asked, simultaneously trying to work out where said stalls were. "I could go for some roasted heardbeast right now, and a cold mug of beer too, or possibly some fruit juice." Either would be good right now, but mere water wouldn't be enough to revive his parched throat.

Riordan grinned back at his friend as the other boy's stomach voiced its own opinion. "Yeah, let's!" He glanced around, then decided to follow his nose. "Something smells good over that way..." He chuckled, his own stomach growling at the smell of food and the sound of what Conomor had been listing off.

Looking to Elae, Annelie once more turned red at the whole mention of the spilling of the soup incident with Cil. Yeah... this story was going to go on for a while for sure...

"Ah.. um, I do what task is asked of me," she answered quietly, blinking at Elae. "So yes... that includes food preparation, serving, cleaning and all that." As she finished further explaining herself, she looked towards the other woman -- who's name had escaped her -- and made a quick, studious glance.

"You said you used to work in the Lower Caverns?" she asked, continuing to speak quietly. "I don't think I ever met you -- sorry."

There were not enough marks in all of Pern for her to speak of the incident that Annelie would probably have heard of. Just thinking about it, she moved her right hand to grab the top of her left arm, a move that she was not entirely aware of doing. Even Keek picked up on it and got antsy. Eye ridge scratch calmed him right down and gave her something to do with her right hand.

Smiling through it, she commented to Annelie, "I am not too surprised, I mainly worked up around dragon riders, and there are so many of us. One smiling face can easily blend into the others." She could count on one hand the grumpy servants or drudges, likewise she could count the ones that didn't last long as the same number.

That was one of the things she loved about her old work, unless they were overly busy, there was always someone laughing and joking around. Sure the work got done, but it was fun to joke around as well. No one worked all the time, which is another explanation, Annelie might have worked a different time then her or in different areas.

"I would definitely introduce you if you'd like." She was surprised at his enthusiasm, finally getting control over her surprised flood of emotion. "He's sleeping right now, lazy log. But I'm sure he'd be very flattered by your enthusiasm." His interpretation was also interesting. "I've never thought of it that way. I know that the watchwhers can go without impressing, but I wonder if that were true. If maybe some candidates were waiting for them also. That would be nice for them I think. If it were ever proved."

“You know, after living in a Weyr for so many years, I’m not sure if I’ll want to go back to my old life,” Elae said blithely, completely ignorant to the traumas her two female companions had faced in their times at the Weyr. “It’s just so exciting here! There’s always something going on and never mind the abundance of attractive men. Just don’t get that at home, you know? I might just stay here. They seem to need every bit of help they can get. Maybe I’ll go into Healing…” it was very useful and helpful, at least. “Or the Lower Caverns, perhaps. They always need more help too. How long have you two been here? I’ve been here for…” She paused for a moment, both to catch her breath and to do the calculations. “About two years. I think Cil has been here for about the same amount of time.

Meanwhile, Cil simply felt buffeted by the winds of conversation and topic changes. He just couldn’t keep up. Wisely, he decided to just keep his mouth shut and hope no one asked him a direct question. It felt horribly awkward to be the only men in the company of women. Most guys would probably kill for his position except for the fact that at least one of the women couldn’t wait to get away from him. That stung a little.

“Ah… three years, actually,” he corrected mildly, still feeling very much out of place. That wasn’t so unusual. Being raised among the Holds seemed an oddity amongst the Candidates, most of whom were Weyrbred except for the possible Queen-to-bes. Being the nephew of a Lord Holder made Cil feel even more out of place.
