Lori shrugged and let her eyes slide away, pulling out a new carrot. "Family's family, pretty much always. My dad was never around and Ma didn't do much to raise me, but I went to work for 'im later and missed Ma when she died. I've seen people who even get abused by their folks, an' they lament and get homesick the same as those who's parents loved 'em a lot."

Ora nodded, "Of course they do. They would probably even be unaware that they were being abused, if it weren't for the outside parties to tell them so. We hold to that which we are raised by, and when we leave it...we seek it out, unless we take measures to prevent that. The social nature of humanity, is a fascinating topic." Ora shrugged her shoulders, the drugs making her entirely too loopy. "If I hadn't had a 'revised' childhood, I'd still be attracted to powerful, abusive megalomaniacs who are unable to connect with people on an emotional level. And I'd still probably try and kill them instead of properly expressing my feelings. But, thanks to a good home and family, instead I have a long-term loving relationship with a womanizing, sex-addicted, megalomaniac god with commitment issues." Ora paused, her drugged eyes blinking. "Dear god, that sounded a whole lot better in my head."

Lori giggled. "Sure it did. That's okay, I haven't even got someone. Only thing I learned from Ma is that men are generally worthless. Most of them I've met, anyhow."

She paused, frowning in thought. "But wait a sec. 'Cept for the sex-addicted part, that's kinda your dad anyway. Isn't it? An' I've never seen him abusive on purpose, even if he is retarded..."

((Xeen would like to inform Lori that if she keeps talking like a b***h, he's going to have to slap her like one.))

((I'm certain she wouldn't care, and at most would get irritated and bitchslap him right back. It wouldn't be the first time she's been smacked, nor the last.))

((Wouldn't be the first time Xeen's been smacked either, I'm sure. W00t slapping all around.))

Ora blinked a few more times, the drugs hard on her brain. "No, no he's not my dad. People wouldn't mistake my storm-god for a woman. But men aren't all that worthless, you can use them for lots of things. I like my kitty." Ora yawned slightly. "My father has been known to have a sharp tongue, but he's not one to beat a person...well, unless it serves a decent purpose."

((ANd Xeen only gets slapped when he asks very nicely. O.o What's with all the Xeen hate? He's saving the freaking world!))

((No Xeen hate from Ora, but she's not going to lie and say he's not a villain, I mean really.))

((Xeen comes off as a snob, Steube. If people weren't intimidated by his powers and such, he's probably get smacked a whole lot more often, and not by his favorite dom.))

Lori thought about that, then shrugged lightly. "Well, yeah. I guess I see the feminine, if you mean how he's built. I dunno. Talk to you people, and it's like all I know from 'Hold is kinda backwards from how you think it. It's like you all have such ideas... barriers. I mean, of course that's the difference, the whole point is that we ignore your barriers or hop around them, but it's weird how the ideas are just like it. I don't understand half of what you're talking about."

Ora stared at her, a blank look on her face. "I don't think I know half of what you're talking about either. You're leaving me confused. What ideas and barriers?"

Her face scrunched up. "Um... A lot of things. In order, I guess..? A lot of people say that thing about Xeen looking like a girl, even he does, but I don't really get it. People look like what they look like, and gender is either something you're born as or something you choose later. It's just a biological thing, like skin color, and it's not like there's only two options... or like you can really tell just by looking at someone, if they're not wearing a sign that says it. That's just silly. And yet, I hear people who aren't Smugglers talking like it's a normal, easy-to-see difference, or is supposed to be. You really only know if you ask, so why pretend otherwise? You guys put men and women in different clothing, and say there's no one inbetween or of a different gender--that's barriers. You see and talk about things like it's all black and white and clearly cordoned, even when it's obviously not.

"Same when you talk about men being useful or useless, or used, period, when you don't say the same about women unless you mean a particular one. I don't get that. And thinking that abuse means beating someone up or down, but doing it verbally isn't the same thing? You make it sound like one thing isn't as bad as the other or something. Almost all of you I've met put this barrier up like that... as if it's excusable that somebody talks down to you, but a big deal if they knock you down with a fist. It's not like the effect is different--you still hurt emotionally and physically afterwards and act different from how you did--so why do you separate it? All this stuff you guys do just doesn't make sense."

Ora looked at her a moment, then followed with a long sigh. " This will take a while. So you block everyone into a 'you' that holds these same idiosyncrasies, denying the fact that you do it to? Welcome to the fun discussion of social constructs, my dear. Our concept, of gender, is unfortunately limited by our language and surrounding culture. And I have to ask you, what would be this 'sign' a person would wear to show their gender? Wouldn't dressing or acting a certain way work in the same fashion? And does social presentation of one's gender not have anything at all to do with the gender as a whole, considering in order to argue that gender is something more than just physical, we would have to add into the discussion that the way a person presents their gender also applies to the definition of their gender as well? Wouldn't it? Perhaps a social gender aspect. I've heard say that gender is better described by a scale of varying degrees, and even that is limiting.

"But yes, my father has a prettiness about him which has been socially associated with the female gender, he eliminates facial hair and keeps his body rather slim and effeminate, he also wears his hair in what has been constructed as a more feminine fashion. By these signs he presents his own gender as he wishes to present it, fully knowing what aspects is associated with what gender construct. If a man were to wear a dress, I would likely assume him a woman, unless he states otherwise or gives some other sign to the contrary, because I assume that is the social gender the person has chosen. I assume it's what they would like the public to see them as. It's none of my damned business what lies behind the dress for the most part."

Ora took a moment to breath, "And to be fair, I wasn't the one who claimed men were useless. But you better damned well believe I view women just as much usable objects as men."

"I also never said my father wasn't abusive. I avoided saying that specifically. And even mentioned the sharp tongue in contradiction to your statement that he wasn't. You're the one making the assumption that abuse is purely physical, or at least assuming that I was assuming such. Which I can tell you for certain, I was not."

Lori just looks irritated and muttered something to herself, chomping on her latest carrot.

Ora shrugged, turning her attention on the Matron as she finally made her way into the tent.

"Honestly, child, you get yourself into the worst scrapes." Erica said, shaking her head as she looked over Ora. She set her book aside, and glanced at Lori, "How long has she been here?"

Lori sat up a bit straighter under the Matron's gaze. "A good forty minutes, ma'am. Don't know how she's been hurt, the one guy brought 'er in. Xeen. He went back for people."
