"I'm watching the overhead, Talon. If anything shifts, I'll yell." It more or less went without saying that subsequent to the yell, it would be a good idea to move. Fast. "Shouldn't have to move too much, I doubt we'll be able to get our Zoids inside anyway." As he spoke, he touched his display panels, programming the message he had mentioned previously. "I've got the message set up, and set on a two-hour delay. After that, the message will transmit. Might want to make sure you've got some gear with you before we go in, there should be a survival kit in the leg panels of Tyrant that contains some useful stuff.

As he spoke he was slapping his own pockets, making sure that the stuff he carried was where it usually was. "Unfortunately I don't have much on me, but I've got enough basics to pull off a simple exploration mission though."

Talon was now really more half listening to Kelly. Yeah, shouting might provide some warning, but really, he was more or less screwed if that happened anyways. No use getting all scared about that. Besides... he was hoping for a quick death if that happened. Then again, knowing him, somehow he'd survive with nothing more than a headache and a foul temper. The Tyrant moved a few more larger boulders out of the way before Talon felt satisfied that the front wouldn't cave in. There was a bit of rubble still there, but it was easily negotiable. Nothing that needed major climbing anyways.

"I'm aware. Maybe next time we'll be a little more prepared for something like this. " Talon had nothing more on him than an LED light he kept around to light dark closets with, matches, and water. There was probably more in the survival kit. Rope would be nice, he mused. "We can't take too long anyways. I don't trust the structure. Probably should get a team out here to stabilize the place before the rains.....

Or at least someone to photograph the interior. " He sighed and eased the Tyrant from the wall. He went through the stand by procedure..at least he was familiar with that so it didn't take him too long. The Tyrant lowered it's head as Talon unhitched himself from the pilot seat and popped the canopy. Talon hopped out, hitting another switch to allow for the leg hatches to be opened manually on his way out.

....Blaah..and because the narrator suddenly got slammed against a huge writers block in the middle of this, Talon grabbed what was needed and waited for Kelly at the mouth of the opening.

Watching Talon shift the rocks, Kelly saw nothing that would cause him to doubt the stability of the overlying wall, a fact that made him feel a lot better about exploring inside said rock face. "Well, you know what they say about living and learning. If we find anything that we are not really set up to handle, we can always leave it and come back later with proper gear." He triggered the standby on Black Knight, cycling the canopy open. He spent a moment inside the cockpit shoving things into pockets on his flight suit, then pulled a set of web gear from behind the seat and slug it around his shoulders. From the rifle case he took his magazines and cleaning kit, sliding them into the provided pockets on the MOLLE harness, then pulled out the rifle and slid the last magzine into the empty mag well. He racked the slide with the familiar *Chick-CHACK* metallic ring of the shell being loaded into the chamber, then slung the weapon over his shoulder.

He jumped down from the cockpit to the ground, using Black Knight's forearm as a fire pole to control his descent, and walked to one of the legs. He pulled open the cargo panel there and removed a number of items, either sliding them into his pockets or clipping them to the web gear, none the least of which were several green-plastic-wrapped bricks, and a good-sized spool of thick, rubbery-looking cable. "Well, I think I've got everything I'll need for this one... as much as I can, anyway. Time to poke our heads in and see if anyone's home!" He grinned as he walked over to where Talon was, pulling a headlamp on over his helmet.

He took his time looking at the rubble as he waited. Kicking over a stone here and there just to see if anything of value was on it. Some pretty pebbles, nothing really worth picking up and packing back. Then again, moving junk out of the way could have damaged something and prevented discovery. How sad...

His mind obviously on the loss of such a possible find, Talon blinked and scowled at Kelly. " I highly doubt anyone would call this place home. It looks like no one has set foot in here in years. " The LED light wasn't as strong as the headlamp, but Talon had an odd feeling that nothing really was going to jump out and attack them. The small spot of light moved around, shining light on stone walls as Talon moved into the blackness. Nothing impressive. A few carvings here and there, mostly graffiti from folks sheltering out a storm in the typical ' I was here' sort of things with a few dates and...A game of Hangman? Huh. Must have been a really long storm.

A bit deeper into the cave, a room opened up. Small...Nothing really worth noting. Maybe a few rusted old storage boxes, but that was about it. Several passage ways lead away from the room. Two of the three, including the way back, were open, free of any rubble. The rest...Well...Umm.. Paper couldn't slip through. There were more glyphs on the walls, and Talon grinned. He chuckled softly. " Well... Nice! They totally looted the place already. Greedy morons.. "

"Hmm, looks like we were indeed beaten here, but they couldn't take those." He gestured to the relief carvings that adorned the walls. "I would wager that the historians will find them most interesting." He looked around, sweeping the head-lamp beam around the room, and mentally cursing himself for the lapse of preparedness that had left him without even a single pair of low-light goggles. A careful inspection of the ceiling revealed no obvious fissures or significant cracking, making him feel much more secure about their position.

"Honestly, I'm surprised that those carvings have held up to the repeated flooding this place has undergone so well, they don't hardly look degraded at all. This place can't have been exposed that long... I wonder if the rock slide we cleared was deliberate?" He thought out loud as he walked the perimeter of the room "In any case, it appears that the treasures in this area are the kind for archiologists. Personally, I'm more interested in ones that have more immediate value. Shall we continue?"

He gestured forward to the unblocked way ahead, turning his head lamp beam to shine down the opening.

The wall reliefs were indeed interesting to Talon. He just noticed them, having finished poking and prodding the abandoned supply crates. Nothing of any major interest. Though, the rusting along the bottom did look rather cool. " Historians would find a shard of stone interesting if you tell them it's from some tribe. Then they'll hoard it, plop a date on it, and throw it in a vault for the rest of its life. Maybe, if they feel creative, they'll throw some sort of story onto it that is so far-fetched a moron would laugh and call them liars. " A sly grin was tacked onto the end. The carvings were really interesting...

Too bad Kelly had another idea, else Talon could have spent a good while trying to memorize the carvings. He was right though. There was bound to be something of monetary worth somewhere in the carved rock. "I suppose so. Though, the water line isn't high enough to affect the carvings. It did a number on the boxes though. Stone's more resilient than steel when it comes to Nature it seems. Too bad its so heavy. "

Eyes glanced at the tunnel, trying to look at what lay beyond the illuminated stone to no avail. " If nothing else, we can always take the boxes back and scrap them and get something for our troubles. " Though it was dangerous to go ahead, Talon did move down the corridor, the little LED light moving erratically from one place to another, illuminating more carvings and a few rock crystals that decided to show themselves every now and then. But nothing really was of value, at least not in Talon's eyes. Yes, if he had a bigger light, and not with another person, he would probably spend a few hours just soaking the place in, but they were kinda on a time limit.

The tunnel continued to wind around and around...going, somewhere important. Or nowhere at all, he was beginning to think. And it was getting a bit boring, course the carving did become more intricate, more curved and less two dimensional. Heck, there were full blown carvings of what could possibly be animals and or Zoids..maybe even personifications of Zoids and animals, Talon wasn't sure, but it sure was interesting. "I really don't think there is anything of value in here... Unless you count some really, really, interesting statuary depictions of possibly ancient history. " he called back, pausing and leaning against the wall, peering into the darkness before him just because.

A chuckle was his response to Talon's commentary on historians, a somewhat ironic acknowledgment of humor-couched truth. "If you've got a camera with you, it might be a good idea to get some photos in here, if for no other reason than to draw interest from our CO. Not sure exactly how he looks on side-explorations, but this at least looks like something they'd want to detail a scientific team to."

Kelly moved carefully in the open passage, watching the ceiling frequently, and placing his feet with great caution. His low-light goggles were fairly effective in here, but as they traveled farther from the entrance, they became less so. Talon's LED light helped that quite a bit, the small amount of ambient light it threw off was enough to light the cavern like day to Kelly's amplified vision, as long as he didn't look too close to the light's spot itself and dazzle the AN/PVS-10s intensifier tube. "Let's take it another couple hundred meters, and if we don't spot anything, call it a dry hole and head back. I don't want to get too far away from our Zoids if we can help it, and we're probably out of contact this far into the ruins." His eyes scanned the floor as he spoke, searching for the telltale rise of a pressure plate or line of a tripwire. Old habits die hard. "Looks like you've more or less got it pegged, interesting for the historians, and that's about it. Oh well, can't expect to strike gold the first time out."

Talon couldn't do much more than shrug. A camera right now would be nice, but who carries around a camera in the middle of a scout mission? And with the light needed..... Yeah...uh... pointless. Unlike Kelly, Talon wasn't wearing those low light goggle thingies. He probably should, but this was a side mission and he wasn't going to jeopardize the bases equipment for this small trip. "If you say so... "

If he could, he probably could have stayed here for another couple of hours, maybe with a lantern that could light up everything to his liking, but Talon was content with patting his pockets down hoping to find something even remotely close to a camera. Too many pockets, he thought begrudgingly before letting the LED light flick off so he could make use of both his hands to find that blasted camera. It was, as karma ruled, in the first pocket he checked. " Fancy that... I should make a list of what I have in these pockets one day. Probably wouldn't help, but I should..." As he mumbled, he fumbled around trying to find the settings on the blasted thing. For a consumer fifty dollar camera, it sure had about two dozen settings too many.

Taking a few notes of where Kelly was, he figured photographing the back of the man wasn't a good idea. Getting knifed in his sleep didn't sit well. Though it would shed a few of those unwanted pounds... Wasn't worth it. "Sound's good to me. " A few photographs were taken of the odd statuary and wall carvings, just enough to tease command and that whole geeky archeology department. Not the best photos, you could only do so much with an LED light and no flash. "Nor can we expect to strike gold ever. We're not in gold country last I recall. Now, quartz crystal and limestone... yeah, not gold. "

"You'd be amazed how much crap you can shove into a good set of pockets. Heck, a set of cargo pants can carry almost a dozen frags if you're creative." He reached up and flipped the latches on his NVGs off, going pretty much instantly blind as he removed the goggles and handed them to Talon. "Don't drop 'em, but try sticking the lens up against the optic here and taking a shot. It's not going to be great quality, but should let you get at least halfway decent shots."

He blinked his eyes, trying to adjust them to the near total darkness, broken only by the light green glow shining from the inside of the goggles, and Talon's flashlight. He normally didn't like using any kind of flash light or projection device if he could avoid it, you were essentially presenting yourself as a beacon target if you did, but he briefly regretted not bringing a tactical light for his weapon. "Next time we go out exploring like this, we need to remember some decent exploration gear. We really don't have any safety stuff for this, if there was a cave-in, we'd be totally hosed."

So saying, he turned back toward the entrance, hunting for that vague glow that would indicate open sky at a distance. "Next question, do we seal this place up behind us again and wait for the historians to open it, or leave it alone?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 07, 2009 10:37 pm

Talon blinked as he caught the NVGs. "I thought you didn't have these with you." He wasn't about to question. Anything to get a better picture would be great. If it meant goggles that randomly appeard out of nowhere, then so be it.

A few more pictures were taken of the large statues and the rubble. Why? Well, it was interesting at least to Talon and sure it seemed silly, but someone would find it interesting. "Mind the large rocks by your feet by the way... But I agree with you completely. " It wasn't that dark, but then coming from something that illuminated everything to almost pitch dark, it was understandable to be a bit disoriented.

A few more pictures and well, now Talon pocketed the camera for safe keeping. "Seal it up and send a more prepared team after the rest. It's close to lunch time anyways. Can't wait to dig in... I'd kill for a shower though. " He laughed and headed towards the exit, patting Kelly on the shoulder as he moved back outside, the little LED light used to negotiate the floor.

"Huh... weird, I thought I didn't either..." Kelly rubbed his head. "Where the heck did I HAVE those things? Don't remember stowing them on my web gear. Oh well, I suppose "Don't look a gift optic in the battery case" or something like that would apply here?" He shrugged, and snagged the goggles back from Talon as he headed for the door, snapping them back over his face with a silent sigh of relief. He didn't LIKE not being able to see what was around him, even when there were no present threats.

"I hear 'ya about the shower, Talon. That's one thing that I never really did get used to. Well, I got used to it, but it was always annoying. Seems like you can never get CLEAN in the field." He followed the younger guy toward the exit, eyeballing the ceiling toward the entrance to the cave. "It looks fairly solid back ten or so feet, this should be easy enough. Trick is NOT to bring the whole ceiling down on the place."

He flipped the goggles up and turned them off as he came close to the daylight, blinking his eyes a few times to adjust them to the sudden change in illumination. "This should only take a few minutes. You ever rigged charges before, Talon?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 25, 2009 11:16 am

"Well, let's just classify these anomolies under 'plot hole' and remember to keep them wherever we had them in case we need them. " Talon snickered softly. Maybe making an emergency caving kit would be a good idea, complete with night goggles and a camera just in case this situation ever arose again. Course, blundering around in the dark was kinda fun... never could understand why people liked those goggles save for in combat situations. Just didn't sit well with the guy. Something about letting computers think for him more than necessary... That had to be it.

Clean. He hadn't felt clean since the day before he got drafted into this bloody army. Snorting back laughter, Talon sighed, "The day I'll be completely clean is the day I retire. Until then its three showers a day plus industrial strength soap. " His attention was turned from the lovely light spilling in from the opening to the ceiling. Talon really had no taste for blowing stuff up, but he did recall something from his basic about rigging charges. " I imagine that is quite a trick. Though, it would be far easier if we just, oh, pile the rocks back up in front of the opening? Saves us charges and doesn't give our position away to the enemy. Nor would it alert any working Sleepers in the area. But you are the senior of this outfit so okay... We'll blast a hole in the canyon. What's the worst that could happen! "

The daylight felt great, even if it was a bit shadowed by the canyon walls. Taking the time to turn off the LED light and stow it in one of his pockets, Talon glanced back up at the canyon's ceiling, then clamored up to the pile of rubble, eying the canyon's wall. He sighed, "I'm out of practice. But I'm sure I couldn't blunder it up that badly. Just tell me what to do. "
