samdragonmaster I agree, those kids are just dumb. Saying there is no risk!! There is too a risk. What if a big tuba falls on a short kid like me? What about the flag people who might accidently mess up and hit themselves? What about if you slip with an instrument in your hand? No risk my butt. I remember once I was playing trombone and brought the slide in to fast and got my finger stuck. The stupid thing bled for like, an hour and hurt like hell, even worse I had to keep playing.

Theia Renown FaTaL_KniVeZ http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10460658&page=1 Guh! I hate those kind of people. More than once I've had an argument with people at school about band. There is this one football player who is always like 'Well if it werent for the football team you wouldnt have a marching band" and I just promptly reply "If it werent for the marching band you wouldnt have a audience"....but marching band is a sport, it an effort and hardwork to multitask and perform all at once. ROTFL, that actually IS true! usually at our football games there's polite clapping for the band and they go crazy for our football team... but I think the crowd actually saved it for the band once they saw our show at the homecoming game, and that's not a lie. can we just say the *marching* band RULES xd lol

on page fifty i gave them a taste of what band actually is. The quick tempos, the perfect step. I didn't even get into turning, and proper form. I jut talked about going staright forward and striaght back. It may not meant there deffintion of spaort. thats al right but saying it is eaiser then anyother "sport", is ignorant. I know football players in my band and they say the only thing that is harder in foot ball is the two a day practices.

I hate people like that! In marching band, it can be so hot underneath those uniforms and we still have to blow our lungs out and hold up heavy instruments for the next 3 miles! It's actually been scientifically proven that one marching band performance is a bit more strenous than a football game. Then again, it could be freezing cold outside, and the band director won't let us wear gloves and our mouthpieces freeze and we have to play with freezing metal instruments! scream

I play the trombone and it does hurt like hell when your finger gets caught in the slide, I couldn't imagine doing that from 6th position (thank god for trigger trombones.) Quite frankly I think that peole who insult band members are just jealous of us.

dude this guy at my dojo was talking to me and i was being nice until he laughed at me when i said i was in marching band and he said i'd be better as a cheerleader. sure if hes only considering looks... i guess that'd be a compliment. but he couldn't believe I would be in band. i hate how once you say the words band... flute... or band camp... everyone immediately goes to american pie. i go to at least 2 camps a year, and its hardly like A.P. sure theres truth or dare... and just playing around, but its nothing like AP... agreed? our cheerleaders love the band, mostly because the head cheerleader is dating a trumpet player, but. our school usually gets really into the band, but i do hear comments, nothing too degrading though.
the sad thing is... we had a football game over thanksgiving break, and our stupid irresponsible band teacher was just like "ok, well, we can have a pep band..." and didn't even think again about it. we came back from break to the horrible news that... 1. the football team lost their first home game of the season, the 2nd to last home game anyway, and 2. the other team brought Their pep band. and out team lost horribly. just one time, but it does prove a lil bit that the pep bands do ahve an effect on the teams game... we should do a test.

If my drum major, Tommy, were to see that forum he'd probably not react too well... He takes pride in band and that is all he talks about.

I think it ought to be considered a sport. I mean, any other sport can be defined by why you actually do. In football, it's run, throw, catch, run... In cheerleading, it's jump, wave, clap, shout... But how can you define playing an instrument? Blowing air through it until it makes a sound while moving your fingers? We're the only ones who actually play.
On the other hand, we are performers. You never see football teams or cheerleaders in strict formations. They never create something that is what someone can call 'beautiful' (frankly, they don't create anything at all). We move as one, play as one. the field is our stage, the drill is the stage directions, the music is the script. We have roles and characters to portray on the field.
Also, I've noticed, that football team members and cheerleaders don't hang around each other when the season ends. With us (at least where I come from), we almost never let any band member out of our sight. The boys always escort their girlfriends to their classes, and we all sit together at lunch. When I meet someone new that I know has been in marching band, it's like I already know them. We have this bond, like a common interest...but it's more than that.
Come to think of it...band is more than a sport.

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10460658&page=51heres wat i said on the subject. i think he got the point... sweatdrop also, the trombone thing, that actually happened to me. i was standing a little to close to a trombone(my mistake, i wasnt supposed to be) and then we went strait to attention and the slide slamed my collar bone. i was sore for a few hours.

"oh, a fat girl in the band, it must be really easy" ill tell you wat, ive had at least 5 asthma attacks, and i dont have asthma!
