Deacon's ears flinched at her question; that comment of his hadn't been addressed properly.
No matter, he didn't have to lie about this... Much.
"That's the funny part," he replied with a smirk. "They're half siblings... They just don't know that. Their mother never told them, those who suspected it knew better than to fill them in... And since the human ditched them when Hitsu was born; probably because he knew; they're still in the dark after all these years."
"Sad thing is, I don't think anybody knows who Hitsu's father was." Picking up a stick with his meat-free hand, Deacon prodded at the fire absently. "You probably shouldn't tell them I told you that, either. It probably wouldn't end well."

Riyo sat silent for a moment after Deacon's explanation. So... They were half-siblings. And... They didn't know about it. Her teeth bit into another piece of meat, temporarily forgetting what she was eating.
"I... Guess it really doesn't matter anyways. Since they care about each other so much." She reluctantly spoke after swallowing her food. " Which is why she couldn't understand why it was such a big deal. So they didn't have the same father. Big deal. They were still brother and sister, right? Not that she'd understand the complexity that was a family tree, she supposed...
"What they won't know won't hurt them..." It felt sort of wrong saying that, since she didn't like keeping secrets from them (especially now that it's about them), but what choice did she have?
"Did you find out from their Mother or something? Were you friends with her?" Riyo asked nonchalantly, not thinking it was a big deal that he knew. They did live in the same village after all, and no piece of information was sacred when you were that close together on a daily basis.

Deacon continued his own meal quietly as she spoke, eyes distant as he chewed, mind staying off to the events long past. He wouldn't elaborate how he knew, not even if she pressed the matter. Therefore, the only response she got was a short one.
"Something like that..."
There was a rustling of the brush nearby, Deacon's ears swiveled to the source of the sound, eyes following in suit as he whipped his head toward the vegetation.
Caleb burst out like a bat out of Hell, panicked and out of breath. He shouted in surprise, startled and relieved to finally see someone. Someone he knew... Until he realized who that someone was he'd just locked eyes with.
Deacon stretched out a leg, tripped the poor boy, and sent him tumbling to the ground to land mere inches from the fire.

Something like that?
Riyo quirked a brow at his unsatisfying answer and thought about pressing the matter further... Until the distant noise made her ears perk. What was...
Oh. Watching the poor b*****d trip over Deacon's foot, Riyo cringed as he went flying, ready to yank him out of the fire if need be. "Jeez, are you okay?" She asked, not bothering to give the tabby a glare for the way he treated Caleb. She knew he didn't care.

"He'll be fine." Deacon was quick to state, at least once he was done chortling at his prank on the smaller feline.
"Y-yes... I-I-I'm fine." Caleb said hastily, hurriedly pushing himself up off the ground and patting at bits of clothing that felt hot to him, in worry that they'd met with a stray spark.
He looked toward Deacon, ears drooped and eyes holding their typical mixture of fear and confusion. When he didn't offer any further taunt or response, Caleb scooted a little ways away from the fire, sitting and drawing his knees up close to his chest and hugging them to him. He shivered lightly, be it from the chill of the night, or something otherwise.
"I was afraid I wouldn't find anyone... I didn't want to be lost out here, all alone..."

To Riyo (and most people), Caleb always looked anything but fine. It was pathetic. Caleb could very well run away or at least stand up for himself...
Though, it was a little disturbing... The scrappy feline vaguely reminded Riyo of her younger self. Thin clothes, frightened disposition, always shaking a little...
"... Are you cold?" She finally asked after realizing she'd been staring. Though why he was afraid he'd be alone was a mystery to her. It seemed a lot better than getting beaten by Deacon..

Riyo would find the skittish boy scooting a little closer to her when she spoke, as though he wanted to be able to lower his voice so that Deacon wouldn't hear him. His eyes continued to dart up at the older male, then back to the fire, then out into the foggy darkness in a paranoid and erratic manner.
"A little cold..." He murmured, looking to her from the corner of his eye for a moment. "Thank you for your concern, Miss Riyo... I think the fire will warm me shortly."

"... Please don't call me Miss." Riyo sighed, removing her trenchcoat to drape over the feline's shoulders in a slow manner. He looked like might jump out of his skin if somebody approached too fast. "I'm already warm, so you can borrow that."
The fact that he scooted closer didn't really bother her. Caleb was obviously no threat. Even if she still had the whole 'man hating' thing going on, the poor cat was... More like a child, honestly.
